Self-interacting neutrinos, the Hubble parameter tension, and the cosmic microwave background

Here, we perform a comprehensive study of cosmological constraints on nonstandard neutrino self-interactions using cosmic microwave background and baryon acoustic oscillation data. We consider different scenarios for neutrino self-interactions distinguished by the fraction of neutrino states allowed to participate in self-interactions and how the relativistic energy density, N eff , is allowed to vary. Specifically, we study cases in which all neutrino states self-interact and N eff varies; two species free-stream, which we show alleviates tension with laboratory constraints, while the energy in the additional interacting states varies; and a variable fraction of neutrinos self-interact with either the total N eff fixed to the Standard Model value or allowed to vary. In no case do we find compelling evidence for new neutrino interactions or nonstandard values of N eff . In several cases, we find additional modes with neutrino decoupling occurring at lower redshifts z dec ~ 10 3–4 . We do a careful analysis to examine whether new neutrino self-interactions solve or alleviate the so-called H 0 tension and find that, when all Planck 2018 CMB temperature and polarization data are included, none of these examples eases the tension more than allowing a variable N eff comprised of free-streaming particles. Although we focus on neutrino interactions, these constraints are applicable to any light relic particle.

Metropolis-style random sampling of quantum gates for the estimation of low-energy observables

In this work, we propose a quantum algorithm to compute low-energy expectation values of a quantum Hamiltonian by sampling a partition function associated with the average energy of that Hamiltonian. For any given quantum circuit-Hamiltonian pair, there is an associated average energy. The sampling is done through an accept/reject Metropolis-style algorithm on the quantum gates of the circuit itself. Observables calculated under the canonical ensemble from these samples of circuits are extrapolated from higher energies to the ground state.

Neural conditional reweighting

There is a growing use of neural network classifiers as unbinned, high-dimensional (and variable-dimensional) reweighting functions. To date, the focus has been on marginal reweighting, where a subset of features are used for reweighting while all other features are integrated over. There are some situations, though, where it is preferable to condition on auxiliary features instead of marginalizing over them. Here, we introduce neural conditional reweighting, which extends neural marginal reweighting to the conditional case. This approach is particularly relevant in high-energy physics experiments for reweighting detector effects conditioned on particle-level truth information. Furthermore we leverage a custom loss function that not only allows us to achieve neural conditional reweighting through a single training procedure, but also yields sensible interpolation even in the presence of phase space holes. As a specific example, we apply neural conditional reweighting to the energy response of high-energy jets, which could be used to improve the modeling of physics objects in parametrized fast simulation packages.
