Pricing Strategy of Electric Vehicle Aggregators Based on Locational Marginal Price to Minimize Photovoltaic (PV) Curtailment

The global climate crisis demands urgent action to mitigate global warming. Using renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power, for electricity generation is crucial. This shift from centralized to distributed power systems, however, brings challenges, including voltage fluctuations and renewable energy curtailment. The rapid growth of the electric vehicle (EV) industry adds complexity, increasing overall electricity demand and straining the power supply during peak charging times. This paper proposes a scheduling strategy for EV aggregators to reduce renewable energy curtailment and stabilize grid operation by strategically scheduling EV charging. Using Multi -Agent Transport Simulation (MATSim), a traffic simulation tool, EV driving data in Denver, Colorado, USA, were modeled. The EV aggregator adjusts charging fees based on locational marginal prices, encouraging EVs to charge at different stations according to pricing. Simulations on an IEEE 33-bus system with distributed energy resources and EV charging stations validate the proposed algorithm, demonstrating its effectiveness in reducing curtailment by 12.55% and stabilizing grid operation.

Flexible PCB Windings Size Optimization for Winding AC Resistance Minimization Under the Sinusoidal Voltage Regime

In this paper, optimization of the winding AC resistance of the flexible printed circuit board (FPCB) wire windings is performed. A one-dimensional model of the FPCB winding is introduced and an equation for the FPCB winding AC resistance and its low and medium frequency approximation are derived. The approximate FPCB winding AC resistance equation is used to derive optimum thickness of the FPCB winding conductor thickness at which minimum of winding AC resistance (global optimum) is achieved. The Finite Element Method analysis and experimental verification of derived equations (winding resistance, impedance, power loss, and temperature measurements) is performed in order validate derived model and winding resistance equation.

Submicron Thickness Characterization of Poly-Si Thin Films on Textured Surfaces by X-Ray Diffraction for Minimizing Parasitic Absorption in Poly-Si/SiO2 Passivating Contact Cells

Poly-Si/SiO2 passivating contacts have shown great potential for industry-relevant next-generation solar cells. Previous work has demonstrated an improved Jsc from dry reactive ion etching in an SF6 environment, using front metal grids as a self-aligned mask. Here, we show an effective method to measure the front poly-Si thickness on an alkaline textured surface using X-ray diffraction. The calculated thicknesses are compared with cross-section SEM analysis and Quokka simulation. We show that by thinning the front poly-Si from 200 nm to 60 nm, Jsc increases by 2.4 mA/cm2, leading to an absolute efficiency gain of 1.73%. Finally, we discuss possible reasons for the premature loss of passivation before the removal of all poly-Si.

Extremum Seeking-Based Control System for Particle Accelerator Beam Loss Minimization

Particle accelerators throughout the world vary widely in terms of age and availability of advanced noninvasive diagnostics that provide varying levels of detail about the accelerated beams. Additionally, beam loss measurements and current monitors are ubiquitous in the accelerator community, they are noninvasive, and they are some of the most important metrics in terms of preventing damage or irradiation of beam pipes and equipment for high-energy machines. However, beam loss and current measurements are difficult to use for feedback tuning because of a lack of a known analytic relationship between scalar loss measurements throughout an accelerator and the hundreds of thousands of parameters that influence the beam and time variation of the beam source itself. In this work, we present a model-independent extremum seeking (ES) controller, which has been implemented for automated tuning and optimization of the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) linear ion accelerator based only on scalar quantities, such as beam loss or flux measurements. We demonstrate the approach on various accelerator subsystems, including groups of radio frequency (RF) accelerating cavities, quadrupole magnets, bending magnets, and steering magnets. This tool is now available as a use graphical user interface (GUI) in the LANSCE control room, allowing beam physicists to choose arbitrary groups of parameters and beam loss or current monitors for adaptive tuning.

Minimizing Timing Jitter’s Impact on Ground-Penetrating Radar Array Coupling Signals

This article presents a novel investigation into the effect of receiver timing jitter on the quality of imaging of ground-penetrating radar systems. We explicitly show the impact of timing jitter throughout an entire example processing pipeline. The process of coupling removal in systems whose receivers have a random Gaussian-distributed jitter with a high standard deviation leaves randomly distributed residue in the radar image. This residue, called jitter-induced coupling noise, extends even into the expected target domain which may cause false alarms. This residue approximately follows a sum of Gaussian and Gamma distributions based on the higher order derivatives of the coupling signal. Once migrated to create an image, the coupling residue is best described by a Weibull distribution. We show that simple filtering does not remove enough residue and propose two preventative design specifications called the linear slope and migrated probability specifications. Antenna and system designers should use these specifications to assess the true severity of coupling signals in a given jitter environment.

Peak Power Minimization for Commercial Thermostatically Controlled Loads in Multi-Unit Grid-Interactive Efficient Buildings

The load profiles of most commercial and industrial consumers are characterized by brief periods of very high power consumption followed by intervals of lower demand. To encourage such consumers to flatten their load profiles, power utilities in and around the world often levy a monthly demand charge (DC) on the peak demand measured over brief intervals. In this work, we consider the joint optimization of energy costs (EC) and the instantaneous peak power of a multi-unit building which uses a hydronic heating, ventilation and cooling (HVAC) system and responds to a demand response (DR) program. Despite the non-linear structure of the problem, we show how optimal solutions can be obtained efficiently using linear programming. Next, we study the power demand patterns resulting from our proposed strategy for thermostatically controlled loads (TCLs), and evaluate the strategy’s performance for various climate zones in the US, under both typical and atypical weather conditions. Finally, the results show that depending on the ambient conditions and the tariff structure, our strategy can result in utility bill savings of up to nearly 19% compared to the baseline. The results also indicate that our power control strategy can significantly reduce the instantaneous peak power consumption in commercial TCLs.

PWM for Simultaneous Minimization of Switching Losses and CM Voltage in Current Source Inverters

This article proposes a new pulsewidth modulation (PWM) scheme that reduces common-mode (CM) voltage and switching losses simultaneously in CSI. The proposed PWM [i.e., reduced voltages PWM (RVM)] reduces CM voltages and switching losses by selecting the optimal zero current vector and PWM sequence based on the CSI output voltage conditions. This article also proves the proposed RVM achieves both objectives (i.e., reduced CM voltage and switching losses) simultaneously for all CSI operating conditions without compromising the other objective. The proposed RVM inherently achieves zero-voltage switching (ZVS) conditions during the zero current vector transitions, further reducing the switching losses. Experimental results demonstrate significant reductions in CM voltage, reaching up to approximately 95%, accompanied by an increase of up to about 5.5% in CSI efficiency across a wide operating range compared to alternative PWM methods, confirming the predicted advantages of the proposed RVM.
