LaMer's 1950 model of particle formation: a review and critical analysis of its classical nucleation and fluctuation theory basis, of competing models and mechanisms for phase-changes and particle formation, and then of its application to silver halide, semiconductor, metal, and metal-oxide nanoparticles

Are classical nucleation theory and the 1950 LaMer model of particle formation supported for a wide range of particle formations, or do competing models in the form of chemical reaction mechanisms have better experimental support? Read on to find out.

Revisiting two thiophosphate compounds constituting d 0 transition metal HfP 2 S 6 and d 10 transition metal α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 as multifunctional materials for combining second harmonic generation response and photocurrent response

Two acentric thiophosphate compounds, HfP 2 S 6 and α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 , are revisited and studied as infrared nonlinear optical materials. HfP 2 S 6 and α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 were structurally characterized without any property measurements. Here, in this work, HfP 2 S 6 and α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 were synthesized via high temperature salt flux reactions. Low-temperature polymorph acentric α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 was purified and grown as mm-sized crystals with the aid of AgBr flux. The AgBr flux was revealed to play an important role in stabilizing the acentric α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 . The acentric α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 transforms to centrosymmetric β-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 at 850(5) K, which is revealed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis and powder X-ray diffraction experiments. HfP 2 S 6 and α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 are discovered by UV-vis spectrum measurements as indirect bandgap semiconductors with bandgaps of 2.2(1) eV and 2.5(1) eV, respectively, which is supported by DFT calculations and TB-LMTO-ASA calculations. The bonding pictures of α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 were studied by crystal orbital Hamilton population calculations (COHP) coupled with electron localization function (ELF) analysis. DFT calculations predict that HfP 2 S 6 and α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 would exhibit different optical performances regardless of being constructed from identical [P 2 S 6 ] motifs. HfP 2 S 6 exhibits a low second harmonic generation (SHG) response, ~0.21 × AGS (for the sample of particle size of 25 μm). α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 possesses moderate SHG response, ~0.61 × AGS (for the sample of particle size of 225 μm) coupled with a high laser damage threshold (LDT) of ~3.2 × AGS. Characteristics of high ambient stability, moderate bandgap and SHG response, type-I phase-matching capability, and high LDT together with the easy growth of large crystals make α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 attractive for future infrared nonlinear optical applications. Photocurrent measurements found that α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 and β-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 have high photocurrent response, 165 nA cm -2 and 135 nA cm -2 , respectively. α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 is a new multifunctional material of the ternary Ag–P–S system, which combines nonlinear optical (NLO) properties and photocurrent response.

Dynamics of inverse metal oxides on metal catalysts using spectro-kinetics: reversible Brønsted acid site formation and irreversible reduction

Brønsted acid sites (BASs) in inverse catalysts are vital for the selective hydrogenolysis of polyols, specifically cleaving secondary C–O bonds. These BASs form dynamically in situ in an H 2 environment. While H 2 enables rapid BAS generation on short timescales, it reduces the catalyst at prolonged exposures. The active center for BAS generation, the kinetics of BAS formation, its reverse decomposition, and the irreversible oxide reduction have lacked direct experimental evidence. Here, aided by advanced spectro-kinetic studies, we identify trimeric W 3 O x sites on Pt as the active centers for BAS generation, whereas isolated WO x species on SiO 2 act merely as spectator species, demonstrated using an inverse WO x /Pt catalyst as a representative system. A detailed kinetic profile capturing the dynamics of W 3 O x sites on Pt is also established. The rate constant for BAS formation is two orders of magnitude higher than for its decomposition, which is one order of magnitude faster than the irreversible site reduction. Co-fed H 2 O suppresses the site reduction by ∼50%. Furthermore, the H 2 partial pressure plays an important role. While lower gas-phase H 2 partial pressure does not influence the reversible BAS formation, it can significantly (∼3×) suppress catalyst reduction. Finally, these findings offer critical insights into optimizing reaction conditions through periodic H 2 pulsing, enhancing catalyst stability and performance in hydrogenolysis reactions.

Novel synthesis approach for “stubborn” metals and metal oxides

Significance Atomically precise complex oxides containing “stubborn” elements, such as ruthenium, iridium, and platinum, hold tremendous promise as designer quantum materials for exploring novel electronic, magnetic, superconducting, and topological phases owing to their strong spin–orbit interaction. This study shows a method to synthesize such materials by eliminating the major synthesis bottleneck of low vapor pressure and difficulty in oxidation. This study serves as a “proof-of-concept” allowing us to 1) grow Pt, RuO 2 , and SrRuO 3 thin films by supplying Pt and Ru precursors at 65 to 100 °C in a low-temperature effusion cell, as opposed to the several thousand degrees Celsius needed using electron beam evaporators; 2) reveal bulk-like room-temperature resistivity; and 3) ultimately provide pathways to creating atomically precise quantum structures.
