The Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), located in the state of New Mexico (United States), is one of the most iconic research centers in the world. Founded in 1943 as part of the Manhattan Project, it emerged from a global conflict and an unprecedented scientific emergency. At that time, the United States feared that Nazi Germany might develop an atomic weapon first. Under the direction of physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, the U.S. government established a secret laboratory in an isolated region of the Los Alamos plateau, bringing together some of the greatest scientific minds of the era. This site, then known as Project Y, became the birthplace of the first atomic bomb.

Niobium-based tungsten alloys are desirable for high-temperature structural applications yet are restricted in practice by limited room-temperature ductility and fabricability. Powder bed fusion additive manufacturing is one technology that could be leveraged to process alloys with limited ductility, without the need for pre-alloying. A custom electron beam powder bed fusion machine was used to demonstrate the processability of blended Nb-1Zr, Nb-10W-1Zr-0.1C, and Nb-20W-1Zr-0.1C powders, with resulting solid optical densities of 99+%. Ultimately, post-processing heat treatments were required to increase tungsten diffusion in niobium, as well as to attain satisfactory mechanical properties.

The speciation of iodine in basalts has been investigated by combining in situ X-ray diffraction at high pressures and temperatures up to 4.9 GPa and 1600 °C, and Raman spectroscopy on recovered high pressure glasses at ambient conditions. Both methods point to iodine being oxidized in basalts, whether molten or quenched as glasses. Observed interatomic distances and Raman vibrational modes are consistent with iodine being dissolved as complex iodate groups alike polyiodates or periodates, not as IO$^-_3$ groups. Iodine speciation in basalts therefore seems to reflect a trend amongst halogens, with lighter chlorine bonding to network modifying cations, and bromine changing affinity from network modifying cations to oxygen anions under pressure. In the absence of a fluid aqueous phase, iodine could thus reach the Earth’s surface in basaltic magmas as an oxide, not as a reduced species.

We present results from the SPring-8 Angstrom Compact free electron LAser (SACLA) XFEL facility, using a high intensity ($\sim\!10^{20}\,$W/cm$^2$) X-ray pump X-ray probe scheme to observe changes in the ionic structure of silicon induced by X-ray heating of the electrons. By avoiding Laue spots in the scattering signal from a single crystalline sample, we observe a rapid rise in diffuse scattering, which we attribute to a loss of lattice order and a transition to a liquid state within 100 fs of irradiation, a timescale which agrees well with first principles simulations, but is faster than that predicted by purely inertial behavior. This method is capable of observing liquid scattering without masking or filtering of signal from the ambient solid, allowing the liquid structure to be measured throughout and beyond the phase change.
