Raman scattering from one and two magnons in magnetoelectric LiNiPO 4

Polarized Raman scattering in magnetoelectric LiNiPO 4 shows a sharp resonant peak at 37 cm -1 in the magnetically ordered phase, originating from a one-magnon excitation of Ni 2+ S = 1 localized moments at the zone center. Also, a broad component with maximum intensity at ~ 65 cm -1 is observed and successfully modeled in terms of light scattering from two-magnon excitations within the framework of the Fleury-Loudon theory using five relevant exchange parameters, providing an independent experimental confirmation of their values previously obtained with inelastic neutron scattering data in this material. An additional peak at 58 cm -1 , already reported in previous works, shows no detectable Zeeman splitting for magnetic fields up to 6 T along the crystallographic a and c directions, excluding one-magnon scattering as a possible assignment for this peak. The possible nature of this excitation is discussed.

Topological order in matrix Ising models

We study a family of models for an N_1 \times N_2 N 1 × N 2 matrix worth of Ising spins S_{aB} S a B . In the large N_i N i limit we show that the spins soften, so that the partition function is described by a bosonic matrix integral with a single ‘spherical’ constraint. In this way we generalize the results of to a wide class of Ising Hamiltonians with O(N_1,\mathbb{Z})\times O(N_2,\mathbb{Z}) O ( N 1 , ℤ ) × O ( N 2 , ℤ ) symmetry. The models can undergo topological large N N phase transitions in which the thermal expectation value of the distribution of singular values of the matrix S_{aB} S a B becomes disconnected. This topological transition competes with low temperature glassy and magnetically ordered phases.

Nature of Magnetic Excitations in the High-Field Phase of α–RuCl 3

We present comprehensive electron spin resonance (ESR) studies of in-plane oriented single crystals of α–RuCl 3 , a quasi-two-dimensional material with honeycomb structure, focusing on its high-field spin dynamics. The measurements were performed in magnetic fields up to 16 T, applied along the [110] and [100] directions. Several ESR modes were detected. Combining our findings with recent inelastic neutron- and Raman-scattering data, we identified most of the observed excitations. Most importantly, we show that the low-temperature ESR response beyond the boundary of the magnetically ordered region is dominated by single- and two-particle processes with magnons as elementary excitations. In conclusion, the peculiarities of the excitation spectrum in the vicinity of the critical field are discussed.

Absence of moment fragmentation in the mixed B -site pyrochlore Nd 2 GaSbO 7

Nd-based pyrochlore oxides of the form Nd 2 GaSbO 7 have garnered a significant amount of interest owing to the moment fragmentation physics observed in Nd 2 GaSbO 7 and speculated in Nd 2 GaSbO 7 . Notably this phenomenon is not ubiquitous in this family, as it is absent in Nd 2 GaSbO 7 , which features a smaller ionic radius on the B site. Here, we explore the necessary conditions for moment fragmentation in the Nd pyrochlore family through a detailed study of the mixed B-site pyrochlore Nd 2 GaSbO 7 . Furthermore, the B site of this system is characterized by significant disorder and an extremely small average ionic radius. Similarly to Nd 2 GaSbO 7 , we find no evidence for moment fragmentation through our bulk characterization and neutron scattering experiments, indicating that chemical pressure (and not necessarily the B-site disorder) plays a key role in the presence or absence of this phenomenon in this material family. Surprisingly, the presence of significant B-site disorder in Nd 2 GaSbO 7 does not generate a spin-glass ground state and instead the same all-in-all-out magnetic order identified in other Nd pyrochlores is found here.

Spin dynamics of the spin-chain antiferromagnet RbFeS 2

In this work, we report transport and inelastic neutron scattering studies on electronic properties and spin dynamics of the quasi-one-dimensional spin-chain antiferromagnet RbFeS 2 . An antiferromagnetic phase transition at TN≈195 K and dispersive spin waves with a spin gap of 5 meV are observed. By modeling the spin excitation spectra using linear spin wave theory, intra and interchain exchange interactions are found to be SJ 1 =100(5) meV and SJ 3 =0.9(3) meV, respectively, together with a small single-ion anisotropy of SD zz =0.04(1) meV. Comparison with previous results for other materials in the same class of Fe 3+ spin-chain systems reveals that although the magnetic order sizes show significant variation from 1.8 to 3.0μ B within the family of materials, the exchange interactions SJ are nevertheless quite similar, analogous to the iron pnictide superconductors where both localized and delocalized electrons contribute to the spin dynamics.

Spin-selective evolution of the Zhang-Rice state in binary transition metal oxide MnO(001) film

Here, the Zhang-Rice (ZR) state is a strongly hybridized bound state formed by transition-metal and oxygen atoms. The spin fluctuations within the ZR state are known to play an important role in high-T c superconductivity in cuprates. Here, we employ a combination of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), and ab initio embedded dynamical mean-field theory (eDMFT) to investigate the influence of magnetic ordering on the spectral characteristics of the valence band and Mn 2⁢p core-level in MnO (001) ultrathin films. Our results demonstrate that a complex spin-selective evolution of Mn 3⁢d-O2⁢p hybridization develops due to the long-range antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering. This hybridization significantly alters the spectral shape and weight of the ZR state. Specifically, in the AFM phase, we observed the sharpening of the ZR state and band folding with the periodicity of the AFM unit cell of MnO(001). We also demonstrated a strong connection between the spectral evolution of the ZR state and the non-local screening channels of the photoexcited core holes. Further, our detailed temperature-dependent study reveals the presence of short-range antiferromagnetic correlations that exist at much higher temperatures than Neel temperature (T N ) and shows the evolution of the ZR state across the magnetic transitions and its implication to the core-hole screening in 3⁢d binary transition metal oxides.

Quantum Engineering With Hybrid Magnonic Systems and Materials (Invited Paper)

Quantum technology has made tremendous strides over the past two decades with remarkable advances in materials engineering, circuit design and dynamic operation. In particular, the integration of different quantum modules has benefited from hybrid quantum systems, which provide an important pathway for harnessing the different natural advantages of complementary quantum systems and for engineering new functionalities. This review focuses on the current frontiers with respect to utilizing magnetic excitations or magnons for novel quantum functionality. Magnons are the fundamental excitations of magnetically ordered solid-state materials and provide great tunability and exibility for interacting with various quantum modules for integration in diverse quantum systems. The concomitant rich variety of physics and material selections enable exploration of novel quantum phenomena in materials science and engineering. In addition, the relative ease of generating strong coupling and forming hybrid dynamic systems with other excitations makes hybrid magnonics a unique platform for quantum engineering. We start our discussion with circuit-based hybrid magnonic systems, which are coupled with microwave photons and acoustic phonons. Subsequently, we are focusing on the recent progress of magnon-magnon coupling within confined magnetic systems. Next we highlight new opportunities for understanding the interactions between magnons and nitrogen-vacancy centers for quantum sensing and implementing quantum interconnects. Lastly, we focus on the spin excitations and magnon spectra of novel quantum materials investigated with advanced optical characterization.

Nonlinear soliton confinement in weakly coupled antiferromagnetic spin chains

In this work, we analyze the low-energy dynamics of quasi-one-dimensional, large-$\textit{S}$ quantum antiferromagnets with easy-axis anisotropy, using a semiclassical nonlinear sigma model. The saddle point approximation leads to a sine-Gordon equation which supports soliton solutions. These correspond to the movement of spatially extended domain walls. Long-range magnetic order is a consequence of a weak interchain coupling. Below the ordering temperature, the coupling to nearby chains leads to an energy cost associated with the separation of two domain walls. From the kink-antikink two-soliton solution, we compute the effective confinement potential. At distances large compared to the size of the solitons the potential is linear, as expected for pointlike domain walls. At small distances the gradual annihilation of the solitons weakens the effective attraction and renders the potential quadratic. From numerically solving the effective one-dimensional Schrödinger equation with this nonlinear confinement potential we compute the soliton bound state spectrum. We apply the theory to CaFe 2 O 4 , an anisotropic $\textit{S}$ = 5/2 magnet based upon antiferromagnetic zigzag chains. Using inelastic neutron scattering, we are able to resolve seven discrete energy levels for spectra recorded slightly below the Néel temperature $T_N$ ≈ 200 K. These modes are well described by our nonlinear confinement model in the regime of large spatially extended solitons.

Large Exchange Coupling Between Localized Spins and Topological Bands in MnBi 2 Te 4

Magnetism in topological materials creates phases exhibiting quantized transport phenomena with potential technological applications. The emergence of such phases relies on strong interaction between localized spins and the topological bands, and the consequent formation of an exchange gap. However, this remains experimentally unquantified in intrinsic magnetic topological materials. Here, this interaction is quantified in MnBi 2 Te 4 , a topological insulator with intrinsic antiferromagnetism. This is achieved by optically exciting Bi-Te p states comprising the bulk topological bands and interrogating the consequent Mn 3d spin dynamics, using a multimodal ultrafast approach. Ultrafast electron scattering and magneto-optic measurements show that the p states demagnetize via electron-phonon scattering at picosecond timescales. Despite being energetically decoupled from the optical excitation, the Mn 3d spins, probed by resonant X-ray scattering, are observed to disorder concurrently with the p spins. Together with atomistic simulations, this reveals that the exchange coupling between localized spins and the topological bands is at least 100 times larger than the superexchange interaction, implying an optimal exchange gap of at least 25 meV in the surface states. Here, by quantifying this exchange coupling, this study validates the materials-by-design strategy of utilizing localized magnetic order to manipulate topological phases, spanning static to ultrafast timescales.

Magnetic Properties of Tetravalent Pu in the Perovskites BaPuO 3 and SrPuO 3

BaPuO 3 and SrPuO 3 were synthesized, and their structures were refined in the orthorhombic space group Pbnm , a common distortion from the classic $Pm\bar{3}$m over barm cubic perovskite. Magnetic-susceptibility measurements, obtained as a function of temperature over the range of 1.8-320 K, exhibit temperature-dependent behavior, with evidence of long-range magnetic order at temperatures higher than their lanthanide and actinide analogues: BaPuO 3 below 164(1) K and SrPuO 3 below 76(1) K. Effective moments of 1.66(10)μ B for BaPuO 3 and 1.84(8)μ B for SrPuO 3 were obtained by fitting their paramagnetic susceptibilities using the Curie-Weiss law. Further, both are below the free-ion value of 2.68 μ B expected for a Pu 4+ 5 $\mid$ 4 ground level. Ab initio wave function calculations, performed at the relativistic complete active space level including spin-orbit coupling and with an embedded cluster approach that neglects interactions between Pu centers, were used to generate embedded-cluster Pu 4+ magnetic susceptibilities. The calculations agree well with experimental data at higher temperatures, providing evidence that a single-ion representation is sufficient to account for the observed paramagnetic behavior without the need to invoke charge transfer, disproportionation, strong covalent bonding, or other more complex electronic behavior.

Conduction via surface states in antiferromagnetic Mott-insulating Ni S 2 single crystals

Pyrite structure transition-metal disulfides exhibit diverse ground states vs d-band filling, spanning diamagnetic semiconducting, ferromagnetic metallic, antiferromagnetic Mott insulating, and superconducting in FeS 2 , CoS 2 , NiS 2 , and CuS 2 . NiS is particularly interesting and poorly understood as its Mott insulating behavior is accompanied by complex antiferromagnetic ordering below ~38 K and perplexing weak ferromagnetism below ~30 K. Temperature-, pressure-, and composition-dependent insulator-metal transitions also occur, particularly in bandwidth-controlled NiS 2–x Se x , hole-doped Ni 1–x Co x S 2 , etc. Here, we use high-quality chemical-vapor-transport-grown NiS 2 single crystals characterized by x-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, magnetometry, and extensive transport and magnetotransport measurements, to generate new insight into this system. In particular, resistivity, magnetoresistance, and Hall effect analyses vs temperature, thickness, and surface preparation, provide unequivocal evidence of surface conduction, where the more conductive surface shunts essentially all current at low temperatures. The surface transport changes from two dimensional and insulating to three dimensional and metallic as the surface preparation is varied (also displaying intriguing sensitivity to magnetic ordering), significantly clarifying literature ambiguities with respect to the electronic ground state. These results have immediate implications. First, the temperature-, pressure-, and composition-dependent insulator-metal transitions deduced in the extensive prior work on NiS 2-x Se x , Ni 1–x Co x S 2 , etc., must clearly be reexamined in light of rife metallic surface conduction, not previously taken into account. Second, NiS 2 now joins FeS 2 and CoS 2 as systems in which bulk and surface electronic behaviors are strikingly different, suggesting that metallic surface states could be a universal feature of pyrite structure transition-metal disulfides.

Magnetocaloric response with significant mechanical efficiency in frustrated intermetallic compound $\mathrm{Pr_{2}Co_{0.86}Si_{2.88}}$

We report magnetically frustrated materials are considered as a promising unconventional members of caloric materials. Here, the magnetocaloric properties of the frustrated Pr 2 Co 0.86 Si 2.88 have been investigated and discussed with the aid of density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The material exhibits a magnetic entropy change (-ΔS M ) of 13.1 J/kg-K for ΔH = 70 kOe around low-temperature transition T L ~ 4 K associated with the antiferromagnetic coupling between localized Pr-4f and itinerant Co-3d moments. Despite the absence of any long-range magnetic order, the obtained - ΔS M is one of the highest among the known Pr-based good magnetocaloric materials at cryogenic temperature range. It also exhibits a relative cooling power (RCP) of ~ 201 J/kg and an adiabatic temperature change of 6.3 K around T L at 70 kOe. Moreover, the compound also exhibits a high mechanical efficiency and moderate electrical efficiency, being beneficial for possible technological applications.

Magnetic behavior of manganese chloride on Kagome and honeycomb lattices

The magnetic properties of transparent pink Na 2 Mn 3 Cl 8 and NaMnCl3 are presented. For both phases, the effective magnetic moments are large, while the Curie-Weiss thetas are below 10 K. The compounds crystallize in the trigonal R-3m and R-3 space groups, respectively. A Kagome plane of Mn 2+ octahedrally coordinated to Cl- is found in Na 2 Mn 3 Cl 8 and the material has no apparent magnetic ordering above 1.8 K, while the octahedrally coordinated, honeycomb network of Mn 2+ in NaMnCl 3 orders antiferromagnetically at 6.3 ± 0.2 K. The heat capacity of NaMnCl3 has one transition, consistent with the susceptibility, while Na 2 Mn 3 Cl 8 exhibits a more complex heat capacity with two peaks, at 0.6 K and 1.4 K. A third, broad peak near 6.2 K in the heat capacity of Na 2 Mn 3 Cl 8 is problematic but may be due to the intergrowth of NaMnCl 3 domains.

Synthesis and magnetic properties of LaFe 13- x - y M x Si y N 3 nitrides

Here, single-phase LaFe 13-x-y M x Si y N 3 compounds (M = Mn) were synthesized by subjecting intermetallic precursors to the ammonia flow at 623 K for 4 h. The nitrides derived from Si-poor (y ≤ 3) cubic intermetallics retain the NaZn 13 -type crystal structure and show considerable (~3 %) lattice expansion compared to the nitrogen-free materials. The temperatures of the magnetic ordering transitions, all of which are second order, increase by ~ 200 K as a result of nitrogenation, and all nitrides exhibit rather weak and broad magnetocaloric effects. The nitrides are stable below 750 K, but they begin to lose nitrogen above this temperature, fully decomposing above 1050 K. The nitrogenation of the tetragonal LaFe 9 Si 4 results in the decomposition of the intermetallic phase and formation of the Fe 3 N compound together with unidentified amorphous phase(s).

Cleavable magnetic materials from van der Waals layered transition metal halides and chalcogenides

The study of exfoliated 2D magnetic materials is a vibrant and rapidly progressing field and is impacting many areas of condensed matter research including fundamental magnetism, spintronics and optoelectronics, and topological spin and electronic systems. The availability of promising candidate materials has enabled much of the progress in this field. Here, I present my perspective on the development of cleavable magnetic materials with a focus on transition metal halides and chalcogenides and an emphasis on crystal structure and magnetic order. To give proper context for these discussions, brief and incomplete surveys of recent work are included, focusing on specific aspects that I find most useful for guiding work on emerging materials and motivating expansion into other compounds and material families. Several instances of structural changes that can differentiate behaviors of bulk and ultrathin specimens are noted. Probing and understanding potential structural differences present a challenge but also an opportunity for material and device development, if they can be predicted and controlled. It is clear that careful investigations of structure, layer stacking, and defects in materials, how they may relate to the crystal chemistry, and how they may be different in crystals and mono- or few-layer specimens provide invaluable context for understanding the behavior of van der Waals layered magnetic materials.

Electron–Phonon and Spin–Lattice Coupling in Atomically Thin Layers of MnBi 2 Te 4

MnBi 2 Te 4 represents a new class of magnetic topological insulators in which novel quantum phases emerge at temperatures higher than those found in magnetically doped thin films. Here in this paper, we investigate how couplings between electron, spin, and lattice are manifested in the phonon spectra of few-septuple-layer thick MnBi 2 Te 4 . After categorizing phonon modes by their symmetries, we study the systematic changes in frequency, line width, and line shape of a spectrally isolated A1g mode. The electron–phonon coupling increases in thinner flakes as manifested in a broader phonon line width, which is likely due to changes of the electron density of states. In 4- and 5-septuple thick samples, the onset of magnetic order below the Néel temperature is concurrent with a transition to an insulating state. We observe signatures of a reduced electron–phonon scattering across this transition as reflected in the reduced Fano parameter. Finally, spin–lattice coupling is measured and modeled from temperature-dependent phonon frequency.

First-principles study of magnetic states and the anomalous Hall conductivity of M Nb 3 S 6 ( M = Co, Fe, Mn, and Ni)

Here, inspired by the observation of the extremely large anomalous Hall effect in the absence of applied magnetic fields or uniform magnetization in CoNb 3 S 6 [Nat. Commun. 9, 3280 (2018); Phys. Rev. Research 2, 023051 (2020)], we perform a first-principles study of this and related compounds of the MNb 3 S 6 type with different transition metal M ions to determine their magnetic orders and the anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC). We find that noncoplanar antiferromagnetic ordering is favored relative to collinear or coplanar order in the case of M = Co, Fe, and Ni, while ferromagnetic ordering is favored in MnNb 3 S 6 at low temperatures. The AHC in these materials with noncoplanar spin ordering can reach about e 2 /h per crystalline layer, while being negligible for coplanar and collinear cases. We also find that the AHC depends sensitively on doping and reaches a maximum for intermediate values of the local spin exchange potential between 0.3 and 0.8 eV. Our AHC results are consistent with the reported Hall measurements in CoNb 3 S 6 and suggest a possibility of similarly large anomalous Hall effects in related compounds.

Quenched disorder in the triangular lattice antiferromagnet YbZn 2⁢ GaO 5

We investigate the crystal electric field (CEF) excitations of Yb 3+ ions in powder samples of the triangular-lattice rare-earth-based antiferromagnet YbZn 2⁢ GaO 5 using inelastic neutron scattering (INS). Three CEF excitations from the ground-state Kramers doublet were observed, each exhibiting significant broadening beyond instrumental resolution. Combining temperature-dependent INS and neutron powder diffraction, we identify a significant static contribution to this broadening and attribute it to heterogeneous coordination of Yb 3+ ions due to Ga 3+ /Zn 2+ site mixing. Rietveld refinement of neutron powder diffraction indicates that 35% of Ga occupies the Zn site and 60% of Zn occupies the Ga site. We show with a point charge model for the CEF Hamiltonian that heterogeneous coordination of Yb3+ ions leads to broadened CEF peaks. First-principles calculations demonstrate that the random Ga 3+ /Zn 2+ distribution can produce the distortions of the YbO 6 octahedra observed from neutron diffraction. Because the documented heterogeneity will extend to exchange interactions, our results suggest that disorder is a significant factor in the unusual magnetism previously reported in YbZn 2 ⁢GaO 5 , including broad low-energy magnetic excitations and the absence of magnetic ordering down to 0.3 K.
