Enhanced Magnetization in CoFe 2 O 4 Through Hydrogen Doping

Magnetic spinel oxides have attracted extensive research interest due to their rich physics and wide range of applications. However, these materials invariably suffer suppressed magnetization, due to structural imperfections (e.g., disorder, anti-site defects, etc.). Herein, a dramatic enhanced magnetization is obtained with an increasement of 5 µ B /u.c in CoFe 2 O 4 (CFO) through ionic liquid gating induced hydrogen doping. Further, the intercalated hydrogen ions lead to both distinct lattice expansion of ≈0.7% and notable Fe valence state reduction through electron doping, in which ≈17% Fe 3+ is reduced into Fe 2+ . These facts collectively trigger a site-specific spin-flip on tetrahedrally coordinated Co 2+ sites that enhances the net ferrimagnetic moment nearly to its theoretical maximum for perfect CFO.

Mild Acetylation and Solubilization of Ground Whole Plant Cell Walls in EmimAc: A Method for Solution-State NMR in DMSO-d6

Lignocellulosic biomass is mainly composed of polysaccharides and lignin. The complexity and diversity of the plant cell wall polymers makes it difficult to isolate the components in pure form for characterization. Many current approaches to analyzing lignocellulose structure, which involve sequential extraction and characterization of the resulting fractions, are time-consuming and labor-intensive. The present study describes a new and facile system for rationally derivatizing and dissolving coarsely ground plant cell wall materials. Using ionic liquids (EmimAc) and dichloroacetyl chloride as a solvent/reagent produced mildly acetylated whole cell walls without significant degradation. The acetylated products were soluble in DMSO-d6 from which they can be characterized by solution-state two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (2D NMR) spectrometry. A distinct advantage of the procedure is that it realizes the dissolution of whole lignocellulosic materials without requiring harsh ball-milling, thereby allowing the acquisition of high-resolution 2D NMR spectra to revealing structural details of the main components (lignin and polysaccharides). The method is therefore beneficial to understanding the composition and structure of biomass aimed at its improved utilization.

From Structured Solvents to Hybrid Materials (SS2HM) for Chemically Selective Capture and Electromagnetic Release of CO 2 : Mechanisms, Stability and Interfaces (Final Report)

The goal of this research program was to develop high capacity sorbents amenable for alternative regeneration approaches for direct air capture (DAC) of CO 2 . In particular, the research aimed to develop an understanding of CO 2 binding mechanism, thermal and oxidative stability, and regeneration energetics of functionalized ionic liquids (ILs), deep eutectic solvents (DESs), and porous materials. ILs and DESs are high-dielectric solvents with structural tunability that permits the rational-design for energy-efficient regeneration approaches based on electromagnetic (EM) field and moisture-swing. By further incorporating these solvents into polymeric capsules and other structural supports, multi-scale interfaces for targeted CO 2 and energy transfers were achieved. Aspects related to CO 2 capacity, selectivity, stability, dielectric properties, and binding energies were examined through experimental and computational design to identify molecular descriptors to inform future design of structured solvents and hybrid materials for DAC. Enclosed final report details the key findings, science advancements, and workforce development efforts from this project.

Synthesis and Performance of Aromatic Polyamide Ionenes as Gas Separation Membranes

Here, we report the synthesis and thermophysical properties of seven primarily aromatic, imidazolium-based polyamide ionenes. The effects of varied para-, meta-, and ortho-connectivity, and spacing of ionic and amide functional groups, on structural and thermophysical properties were analyzed. Suitable, robust derivatives were cast into thin films, neat, or with stoichiometric equivalents of the ionic liquid (IL) 1-benzy-3-methylimidazolium bistriflimide ([Bnmim][Tf 2 N]), and the gas transport properties of these membranes were measured. Pure gas permeabilities and permselectivities for N 2 , CH 4 , and CO 2 are reported. Consistent para-connectivity in the backbone was shown to yield the highest CO 2 permeability and suitability for casting as a very thin, flexible film. Derivatives containing terephthalamide segments exhibited the highest CO 2 /CH 4 and CO 2 /N 2 selectivities, yet CO 2 permeability decreased with further deviation from consistent para-linkages.

A hybrid chemical-biological approach can upcycle mixed plastic waste with reduced cost and carbon footprint

Derived from renewable feedstocks, such as biomass, polylactic acid (PLA) is considered a more environmentally friendly plastic than conventional petroleum-based polyethylene terephthalate (PET). However, PLA must still be recycled, and its growing popularity and mixture with PET plastics at the disposal stage poses a cross-contamination threat in existing recycling facilities and results in low-value and low-quality recycled products. Hybrid upcycling has been proposed as a promising sustainable solution for mixed plastic waste, but its techno-economic and life cycle environmental performance remain understudied. We propose a hybrid upcycling approach using a biocompatible ionic liquid (IL) to first chemically depolymerize plastics and then convert the depolymerized stream via biological upgrading with no extra separation. Here we show that over 95% of mixed PET/PLA was depolymerized into the respective monomers, which then served as the sole carbon source for the growth of Pseudomonas putida, enabling the conversion of the depolymerized plastics into biodegradable polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs). In comparison to conventional commercial PHAs, the estimated optimal production cost and carbon footprint are reduced by 62% and 29%, respectively.

Exploring the Role of Organic Functional Groups in the Ionothermal Synthesis of Uranyl Phosphate Materials

Four new hybrid organic-inorganic uranyl phosphate compounds were structurally characterized after single crystals were grown via ionothermal synthesis using the ionic liquids 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium dimethyl phosphate and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium dibutyl phosphate. Three of the new crystal structures presented here incorporate dimethyl or monomethyl phosphate ligands into the structural unit to form one chain-based compound and two sheet-based compounds. One of the structures utilizes dibutyl phosphate to form a previously reported uranyl compound, a structural polymorph that crystallized in space group P2 1 /c in contrast to the previously reported P-1 structure. The structural and topological relationships are compared to those of uranyl phosphate minerals as well as previously reported organophosphate compounds. Finally, the roles of the organics on the phosphate anions in impacting uranyl coordination and stabilizing the crystal structures are discussed.

Ion-gated carbon molecular sieve gas separation membranes

Membrane technology lies at the heart of many industrial gas separation processes and applications. Molecular sieving membranes that break the Robeson limit are desirable for energy-efficient gas separation. In this paper, we report a facile strategy of directly integrating ionic liquids (ILs) into porous membranes. Particularly, the ILs form an ultra-thin layer on the carbon molecular sieve (CMS) membranes rather than penetrating into the pores, acting as a smart gate for gas entry to boost the selectivity. The hybrid membrane exhibits CO 2 permeability >600 barrer and enhanced CO 2 /N 2 selectivity >50, which surpasses the Robeson limit and shows potential in CO 2 /N 2 separation process. Molecular dynamics simulations confirm the gating effect of the IL layer of molecular thickness. In conclusion, this work demonstrates a universal strategy to improve CMS membrane performance by creating an IL-membrane interface and tuning the ion-pore interaction.

Evaluation of engineered low-lignin poplar for conversion into advanced bioproducts

Lignocellulosic resources are promising feedstocks for the manufacture of bio-based products and bioenergy. However, the inherent recalcitrance of biomass to conversion into simple sugars currently hinders the deployment of advanced bioproducts at large scale. Lignin is a primary contributor to biomass recalcitrance as it protects cell wall polysaccharides from degradation and can inhibit hydrolytic enzymes via non-productive adsorption. Several engineering strategies have been designed to reduce lignin or modify its monomeric composition. For example, expression of bacterial 3-dehydroshikimate dehydratase (QsuB) in poplar trees resulted in a reduction in lignin due to redirection of metabolic flux toward 3,4-dihydroxybenzoate at the expense of lignin. This reduction was accompanied with remarkable changes in the pools of aromatic compounds that accumulate in the biomass. The impact of these modifications on downstream biomass deconstruction and conversion into advanced bioproducts was evaluated in the current study. Using ionic liquid pretreatment followed by enzymatic saccharification, biomass from engineered trees released more glucose and xylose compared to wild-type control trees under optimum conditions. Fermentation of the resulting hydrolysates using Rhodosporidium toruloides strains engineered to produce α-bisabolene, epi-isozizaene, and fatty alcohols showed no negative impact on cell growth and yielded higher titers of bioproducts (as much as + 58%) in the case of QsuB transgenics trees. Our data show that low-recalcitrant poplar biomass obtained with the QsuB technology has the potential to improve the production of advanced bioproducts.

Understanding and Harnessing the Robustness of Undomesticated Yarrowia lipolytica Strains for Biosynthesis of Designer Bioesters (Final Report)

This project seeks to elucidate and harness the exceptional robustness of novel and undomesticated Y. lipolytica isolates, which were identified from a genetic diversity screening for compatibility with bioenergy development. Bioenergy-relevant isolates were further developed as microbial platforms for efficient conversion of undetoxified biomass hydrolysates into designer bio-esters continuously recovered by solvent extraction. The project has three major goals. Goal 1. Elucidate and enhance the endogenous metabolism of Y. lipolytica for superior growth, sugar utilization, and lipid accumulation in undetoxified biomass hydrolysates under hypoxic conditions. Goal 2. Understand and enhance the underlying mechanism of exceptional tolerance of Y. lipolytica to organic solvents. Goal 3. Elucidate and rewire endogenous metabolism of the most robust Y. lipolytica strains for effective conversion of accumulating lipids to designer bio-esters. Significant progress has been made toward completing all research goals. We elucidated and optimized the robustness of Y. lipolytica by utilizing mixed C5 and C6 sugars in switchgrass hydrolysates (SGH) for lipid production (Aim 1). We conducted extensive omics analysis to investigate how genetic diversity among Yarrowia strains, derived from natural isolates or developed through adaptive laboratory evolution, influences lipid production when utilizing SGH. In Aim 2, novel mechanisms and underlying genetics were discovered that enabled Yarrowia strains to thrive in cultures containing high ionic liquid (IL) concentrations. Amongst other novel findings, it was found that sterols strengthened cell membranes to confer IL toxicity resistance, specifically via increased ergosterol content upon exposure to IL. In Aim 3, mechanistic studies elucidated how Y. lipolytica utilized intracellular lipids and alkanes/alkenes, leading to our discovery of novel enzymes and pathways for making short-chain esters. Most notably, thermostable chloramphenicol transferases were repurposed to function as alcohol acetyltransferases in Y. lipolytica, as well as the Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria Escherichia coli and thermophile Clostridium thermocellum, respectively.

Processing iridium foil targets for the production of radioplatinum isotopes

Dissolving noble metals remains challenging because of their high reduction potentials and tendency to passivate as oxides. This barrier is acute for iridium metal targets used to produce platinum radioisotopes, where post-irradiation processing is costly and hazardous with conventional routes. Here, we report a rapid alkali-fusion method that converts Ir metal directly into chloride media compatible with downstream separations. In the process, an Ir foil is fused with Na 2 O 2 and KCl at temperatures above the KCl melting point; the molten salt enhances heat transfer and facilitates O 2− /Na + transport to the Ir surface, overcoming Ir's oxidation resistance. The fused cake is then cooled and leached in 10 M HCl, yielding Ir in solution without specialized microwave digestion or HF. Pt separation from bulk Ir was evaluated using extraction-chromatography resins. A newly formulated ionic-liquid resin containing Cyphos IL 104 (E104) was compared with two commercial resins (TrisKem TK200 and TK201). All resins achieved >90 % Ir recovery. Pt co-recovery depended on resin chemistry: TK200 recovered 85.9 % Pt, TK201 recovered 54.1 % Pt, and E104 recovered 72.9 % Pt. This study introduces a fast, scalable dissolution route for solid Ir targets and demonstrates resin choices that tune Ir/Pt separation, lowering the barrier to routine production and purification of Pt radioisotopes.

Evidence for Enhanced Tracer Diffusion in Densely Packed Interfacial Assemblies of Hairy Nanoparticles

Nearly monodisperse nanoparticle (NP) spheres attached to a nonvolatile ionic liquid surface were tracked by in situ scanning electron microscopy to obtain the tracer diffusion coefficient D tr as a function of the areal fraction Φ. The in situ technique resolved both tracer (gold) and background (silica) particles for ~1–2 min, highlighting their mechanisms of diffusion, which were strongly dependent on Φ. Structure and dynamics at low and moderate Φ paralleled those reported for larger colloidal spheres, showing an increase in order and a decrease in D tr by over 4 orders of magnitude. However, ligand interactions were more important near jamming, leading to different caging and jamming dynamics for smaller NPs. Finally, the normalized D tr at ultrahigh Φ depended on particle diameter and ligand molecular weight. Increasing the PEG molecular weight by a factor of 4 increased D tr by 2 orders of magnitude at ultrahigh Φ, indicating stronger ligand lubrication for smaller particles.

Thermodynamic description of molten salt systems: KCl-LiCl-NaCl and KCl-LiCl-NdCl 3

The mixture of KCl and LiCl has been used as electrolyte in the electrorefining process to recover uranium from used nuclear fuels due to the low melting point. However, lanthanides and sodium in the reactor waste continuously dissolve into it and thus alter its thermodynamic properties. To understand the thermodynamic behavior evolution of the electrolyte with the accumulation of impurities, thermodynamic modeling for KCl-LiCl-NaCl and KCl-LiCl-NdCl 3 and four constituent binary systems in the entire composition space was performed using the CALPHAD (CALculation of PHAse Diagrams) approach. The ionic liquid was described by the two-sublattice model, where neutral species were introduced to consider short-range ordering (SRO) within the melt, whereas the solid solution was modeled based on the Compound Energy Formalism. Literature data on phase equilibria and thermochemical properties were critically evaluated and used during the optimization of thermodynamic parameters for KCl-LiCl-NaCl and KCl-LiCl-NdCl 3 and their subsystems. The calculated phase diagrams and mixing enthalpies are in good agreement with the experimental data. The thermodynamic modeling for the KCl-LiCl-NdCl 3 system was carried out for the first time. To fill the gap in experimental measurement, enthalpy of mixing for the KCl-LiCl-NdCl 3 melt was estimated using the surrounded-ion model. These data then served as critical inputs for thermodynamic optimization. Furthermore, the present study can provide insights into thermodynamic property evolution of the electrolyte and solubility limit of various impurities during the electrorefining process.

Oxygen vacancy-rich amorphous FeNi hydroxide nanoclusters as an efficient electrocatalyst for water oxidation

Here, a one-pot strategy is presented to directly synthesize amorphous Fe x Ni y hydroxide nanoclusters (denoted as ANC-Fe x Ni y , <2 nm) with oxygen vacancies induced by ionic liquids. The ANC-Fe x Ni y catalyst presents abundant catalytic sites and high intrinsic conductivity. As such, the optimized ANC-Fe 1 Ni 2 exhibits high activity in oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with a Tafel slope of 39 mV dec –1 and an overpotential of 266 mV at 10 mA cm –2 . Notably, the optimized ANC-Fe 1 Ni 2 shows an extraordinarily large mass activity of 3028 A g FeNi –1 at the overpotential of 300 mV, which is ~24-fold of commercial RuO 2 catalyst. The superior activity of these Fe x Ni y hydroxide nanoclusters is ascribed to (i) the amorphous and distorted structure with abundant oxygen vacancies, and (ii) enhanced active site density by downsizing the ANC-Fe x Ni y clusters. This strategy provides a novel route for enhancing OER electrocatalytic performance and highly encouraging for the future application of amorphous metal hydroxides in catalysis.

Double Doping of Semiconducting Polymers Using Ion-Exchange with a Dianion

The interactions between counterions and electronic carriers in electrically doped semiconducting polymers are important for delocalization of charge carriers, electronic conductivity, and thermal stability. The introduction of a dianions in semiconducting polymers leads to double doping where there is one counterion for two charge carriers. Double doping minimizes structural distortions, but changes the electrostatic interactions between the carriers and counterions. Polymeric ionic liquids (PIL) with croconate dianions are helpful to investigate the role of the counterion in p-type semiconducting polymers. PILs prevent diffusion of the cation into the semiconducting polymers during ion exchange. The redox-active croconate dianions undergo ion exchange with doped semiconducting polymers depending on their ionization energy. Croconate dianions are found to reduce doped films of poly(3-hexyl thiophene), but undergo ion exchange with a polythiophene with tetraethylene glycol side chains, P(g 4 2T-T), that has a lower ionization energy. The croconate dianion maintains crystalline order in P(g 4 2T-T) and leads to a lower activation energy for the electrical conductivity than PF 6 – counterions. The control of the doping level with croconate allows optimization of the thermoelectric performance of the semiconducting polymer. Finally, the thermal stability of the doped films of P(g 4 2T-T) is found to depend strongly on the nature of the counterion.

The power of lanthanides: same composition, but different lanthanides leading to different interesting materials properties, from magnetocalorics to molecular magnets and phosphors

Commonly accepted design concepts for ionic liquids (ILs) state that the constituting ions must be large and carry low, well-dispersed charges. A series of ILs based of pentadeca charged ILs with pentanuclear linear {Ln 5 } units ([Ln 5 (C 2 H 5 -C 3 H 3 N 2 -CH 2 COO) 16 (H 2 O) 8 ](Tf 2 N) 15 (C 3 H 3 N 2 = imidazolium moiety, Tf 2 N = bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide) with Ln = Er, Ho, Tm) demonstrates that these criteria are not absolute. Highly charged ions can also support IL formation, provided they are sufficiently large. Expanding the series of these unconventional, record pentadeca charged with new lanthanide representatives, led to the discovery of additional unprecedented properties for ILs: The Gd compound exhibits a strong magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in the liquid state with a maximum magnetic entropy change of −ΔS M = −11 J⋅kg −1 ⋅K −1 at 2 K for Δμ 0 H = 7 T. Albeit the Dy representative shows slow magnetic relaxation, the relaxation times are not favorable for practical application as a molecular magnet. Lastly, for both the Gd and the Y compound, phosphorescence in the seconds time scale is observed, which is, to the best of our knowledge, the longest ever reported for an IL.

Linker-Free Magnetite-Decorated Gold Nanoparticles (Fe3O4-Au): Synthesis, Characterization, and Application for Electrochemical Detection of Arsenic (III)

Linker-free magnetite nanoparticles (Fe3O4NPs)-decorated gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were grown using a new protocol that can be used as a new platform for synthesis of other intact metal–metal oxide nanocomposites without the need for linkers. This minimizes the distance between the metal and metal oxide nanoparticles and ensures the optimum combined effects between the two material interfaces. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy confirmed the successful synthesis of the Fe3O4-Au nanocomposite, without any change in the magnetite phase. Characterization, using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, revealed the composite to consist of AuNPs of 70 ± 10 nm diameter decorated with tiny 10 ± 3 nm diameter Fe3O4NPs in Au:Fe mass ratio of 5:1. The prepared Fe3O4-Au nanocomposite was embedded in ionic liquid (IL) and applied for the modification of glassy carbon electrode (GCE) for the electrochemical detection of As(III) in water. By combining the excellent catalytic properties of the AuNPs with the high adsorption capacity of the tiny Fe3O4NPs towards As(III), as well as the good conductivity of IL, the Fe3O4-Au-IL nanocomposite showed excellent performance in the square wave anodic stripping voltammetry detection of As(III). Under the optimized conditions, a linear range of 1 to 100 μg/L was achieved with a detection limit of 0.22 μg/L (S/N = 3), and no interference from 100-fold higher concentrations of a wide variety of cations and anions found in water. A very low residual standard deviation of 1.16% confirmed the high precision/reproducibility of As(III) analysis and the reliability of the Fe3O4-Au-IL sensing interface. Finally, this proposed sensing interface was successfully applied to analyzing synthetic river and wastewater samples with a 95–101% recovery, demonstrating excellent accuracy, even in complex synthetic river and wastewater samples containing high concentrations of humic acid without any sample pretreatments.
