Excitonic Interactions and Mechanism for Ultrafast Interlayer Photoexcited Response in van der Waals Heterostructures

Optical dynamics in van der Waals heterobilayers is of fundamental scientific and practical interest. Based on a time-dependent adiabatic GW approach, we discover a new many-electron (excitonic) channel for converting photoexcited intralayer to interlayer excitations and the associated ultrafast optical responses in heterobilayers, which is conceptually different from the conventional single-particle picture. We find strong electron-hole interactions drive the dynamics and enhance the pump-probe optical responses by an order of magnitude with a rise time of ~3⁢0⁢0 fs in MoSe 2 /WSe 2 heterobilayers, in agreement with experiment.

Microwave-Based Quantum Control and Coherence Protection of Tin-Vacancy Spin Qubits in a Strain-Tuned Diamond-Membrane Heterostructure

Robust spin-photon interfaces in solids are essential components in quantum networking and sensing technologies. Ideally, these interfaces combine a long-lived spin memory, coherent optical transitions, fast and high-fidelity spin manipulation, and straightforward device integration and scaling. The tin- vacancy center (SnV) in diamond is a promising spin-photon interface with desirable optical and spin properties at 1.7 K. However, the SnV spin lacks efficient microwave control, and its spin coherence degrades with higher temperature. In this work, we introduce a new platform that overcomes these challenges—SnV centers in uniformly strained thin diamond membranes. The controlled generation of crystal strain introduces orbital mixing that allows microwave control of the spin state with 99.36(9)% gate fidelity and spin coherence protection beyond a millisecond. Moreover, the presence of crystal strain suppresses temperature-dependent dephasing processes, leading to a considerable improvement of the coherence time up to 223(10) μs at 4 K, a widely accessible temperature in common cryogenic systems. Critically, the coherence of optical transitions is unaffected by the elevated temperature, exhibiting nearly lifetime-limited optical linewidths. Combined with the compatibility of diamond membranes with device integration, the demonstrated platform is an ideal spin-photon interface for future quantum technologies.

Generalized analytical and numerical modeling of optical second harmonic generation in anisotropic crystals and complex heterostructures using #SHAARP package

Optical second harmonic generation (SHG) is a nonlinear optical effect widely used for nonlinear optical microscopy and laser frequency conversion. The closed-form analytical solution of the nonlinear optical responses is essential for evaluating the optical responses of new materials whose optical properties are unknown a priori. Many approximations have therefore been employed in the existing analytical approaches, such as slowly varying approximation, weak reflection of the nonlinear polarization, transparent medium, high crystallographic symmetry, Kleinman symmetry, easy crystal orientation along a high-symmetry direction, phase matching conditions and negligible interference among nonlinear waves, which may lead to large errors in the reported material properties. To avoid these approximations, here we have developed an open-source package named Second Harmonic Analysis of Anisotropic Rotational Polarimetry (#SHAARP) for single interface (si) and in multilayers (ml) for homogeneous crystals. The reliability and accuracy are established by experimentally benchmarking with both the SHG polarimetry and Maker fringes predicted from the package using standard materials. SHAARP.si and SHAARP.ml are available through GitHub https://github.com/Rui-Zu/SHAARP and https://github.com/bzw133/SHAARP.ml, respectively.

Interfacial tuning of chiral magnetic interactions for large topological Hall effects in LaMnO 3 /SrIrO 3 heterostructures

Chiral interactions in magnetic systems can give rise to rich physics manifested, for example, as nontrivial spin textures. The foremost interaction responsible for chiral magnetism is the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), resulting from inversion symmetry breaking in the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling. However, the atomistic origin of DMIs and their relationship to emergent electrodynamic phenomena, such as topological Hall effect (THE), remain unclear. Here, we investigate the role of interfacial DMIs in 3 d –5 d transition metal-oxide-based LaMnO 3 /SrIrO 3 superlattices on THE from a chiral spin texture. By additively engineering the interfacial inversion symmetry with atomic-scale precision, we directly link the competition between interfacial collinear ferromagnetic interactions and DMIs to an enhanced THE. The ability to control the DMI and resulting THE points to a pathway for harnessing interfacial structures to maximize the density of chiral spin textures useful for developing high-density information storage and quantum magnets for quantum information science.

Remote heteroepitaxy of GaN microrod heterostructures for deformable light-emitting diodes and wafer recycle

There have been rapidly increasing demands for flexible lighting apparatus, and micrometer-scale light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are regarded as one of the promising lighting sources for deformable device applications. Herein, we demonstrate a method of creating a deformable LED, based on remote heteroepitaxy of GaN microrod (MR) p - n junction arrays on c -Al 2 O 3 wafer across graphene. The use of graphene allows the transfer of MR LED arrays onto a copper plate, and spatially separate MR arrays offer ideal device geometry suitable for deformable LED in various shapes without serious device performance degradation. Moreover, remote heteroepitaxy also allows the wafer to be reused, allowing reproducible production of MR LEDs using a single substrate without noticeable device degradation. The remote heteroepitaxial relation is determined by high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy, and the density functional theory simulations clarify how the remote heteroepitaxy is made possible through graphene.

Quantum metric nonlinear Hall effect in a topological antiferromagnetic heterostructure

Quantum geometry in condensed matter physics has two components: the real part quantum metric and the imaginary part Berry curvature. Whereas the effects of Berry curvature have been observed through phenomena such as the quantum Hall effect in 2D electron gases and the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in ferromagnets, quantum metric has rarely been explored. Here, in this paper, we report a nonlinear Hall effect induced by quantum metric dipole by interfacing even-layered MnBi 2 Te 4 with black phosphorus. The quantum metric nonlinear Hall effect switches direction upon reversing the AFM spins and exhibits distinct scaling that is independent of the scattering time. Our results open the door to discovering quantum metric responses predicted theoretically and pave the way for applications that bridge nonlinear electronics with AFM spintronics.
