Thermal radiative properties: Nonmetallic solids.

The volume consists of a text on theory, estimation, and measurement, together with its bibliography, the main body of numerical data and its references, and the material index. The text material assumes a role complementary to the main body of numerical data. The physics and basic concepts of thermal radiation are discussed in detail, focusing attention on treatment of nonmetallic materials: theory, estimation, and methods of measurement. Numerical data is presented in a comprehensive manner. The scope of coverage includes the nonmetallic elements and their compounds, intermetallics, polymers, glasses, and minerals. Analyzed data graphs provide an evaluative review of the data. All data have been obtained from their original sources, and each data set is so referenced.

Observations of the binary X-ray source SMC X-1 from OSO-7.

The X-ray source was observed with an X-ray telescope during the time from April 15, 1972 to May 25, 1972. These observations complement the Uhuru results reported by Schreier et al. (1972) and permit an extension of the spectrum to at least 35 keV. Combined with other observations, the data could help determine long term periodic variations, if any exist. The relative exposure and the corrected counting rate of the X-ray telescope during the precession of the satellite axis are shown in a graph.

Optical study of charge exchange collisions between He+ and CO2.

Helium ions were produced in an electron bombardment ion source and directed into a gas cell containing carbon dioxide. A Wien filter placed between the ion source and the gas cell insured that only singly charged helium ions reached the cell. The spectrum obtained for the bombardment of carbon dioxide with the helium ions at 1200 eV is shown in a graph. Prominent features of the lower spectrum are two atomic lines at 3889 and 4471 A.

New thermodynamic functions for the C3 molecule.

When graphite is used as ablation material in heat shields, very often a prominent carbon species vaporized into the stream is C3. The thermodynamic properties of the C3 molecule are, therefore, important in calculating transport phenomena in the ablation flow field. The nature of the C3 thermodynamic functions has been in doubt because of the uncertain contribution of the bending mode vibrations to the total internal energy of the molecule. An approach for overcoming these difficulties is considered. The results of the computations are presented in the form of graphs and approximating functions.

Stimulated emission in multiple-photon-pumped xenon and argon excimers.

A pumping process involving the multiphoton absorption of laser radiation at 3547 and 2660 A is employed in the investigation. Typically, about 25% of the incident pumping radiation is absorbed and effective in producing excimer fluorescence. The four cases studied include 2660-A-pumped argon, 2660-A-pumped xenon, 3547-A-pumped xenon, and 3547-A-pumped argon. Results concerning the on-axis and off-axis fluorescence obtained from the excimers are presented in a graph.

Muon capture rates on O-16 leading to bound states of N-16.

A low-energy spectrum of gamma-rays following muon capture in O-16 was obtained with a high-resolution 1 cu cm Ge(Li) detector. The graph of the spectrum shows the separation of contaminant peaks from the 120 keV N-16 line. It is pointed out that there is a large discrepancy between the capture rate obtained in the investigation and results reported by Deutsch et al. (1969).

Diffuse X and gamma radiation.

The most reliable measurements in the energy range from 0.1 MeV to 100 MeV are presented in graphs. Studies in the region from 1 keV to 100 keV are discussed, giving attention to nonthermal mechanisms, thermal emission from a uniform intergalactic medium, the contribution of discrete extragalactic sources to the isotropic X-ray background, discrete diffuse X-ray sources in galaxy clusters, the contribution of galaxy clusters to the isotropic X-ray background, and fluctuations in the X-ray background. Diffuse X rays below 1 keV are also considered together with diffuse galactic X and gamma rays above 1 keV and the significance of diffuse X and gamma radiation for astronomy.

Study of magnetic perturbations on SEC vidicon tubes

A laboratory measurements program was conducted to determine the tolerances that must be imposed to achieve optimum performance from SEC-vidicon data sensors in the LST mission. These measurements along with other data were used to formulate recommendations regarding the necessary telemetry and remote control for the television data sensors when in orbit. The study encompassed the following tasks: (1) Conducted laboratory measurements of the perturbations which an external magnetic field produces on a magnetically focused, SEC-vidicon. Evaluated shielding approaches. (2) Experimentally evaluated the effects produced on overall performance by variations of the tube electrode potentials, and the focus, deflection and alignment fields. (3) Recommended the extent of ground control of camera parameters and camera parameter telemetry required for optimizing the performance of the television system in orbit. The experimental data are summarized in a set of graphs.

Rheology in lubrication

The rheological effects on lubrication are discussed. The types of lubrication considered are thick film hydrodynamic lubrication and thin film elastohydrodynamic lubrication. The temperature-viscosity, viscoelastic, shear-thinning, and normal stess effects on the lubrication of journal bearings are analyzed. A graph of the pressure distribution of viscoelastic liquids in journal bearings is provided. Mathematical models are developed to define the effects of various properties of the lubricants on friction reduction.

Energy and resource consumption

The present and projected energy requirements for the United States are discussed. The energy consumption and demand sectors are divided into the categories: residential and commercial, transportation, and industrial and electrical generation (utilities). All sectors except electrical generation use varying amounts of fossile fuel resources for non-energy purposes. The highest percentage of non-energy use by sector is industrial with 71.3 percent. The household and commercial sector uses 28.4 percent, and transportation about 0.3 percent. Graphs are developed to project fossil fuel demands for non-energy purposes and the perdentage of the total fossil fuel used for non-energy needs.

Frequency modulation television analysis: Distortion analysis

Computer simulation is used to calculate the time-domain waveform of standard T-pulse-and-bar test signal distorted in passing through an FM television system. The simulator includes flat or preemphasized systems and requires specification of the RF predetection filter characteristics. The predetection filters are modeled with frequency-symmetric Chebyshev (0.1-db ripple) and Butterworth filters. The computer was used to calculate distorted output signals for sixty-four different specified systems, and the output waveforms are plotted for all sixty-four. Comparison of the plotted graphs indicates that a Chebyshev predetection filter of four poles causes slightly more signal distortion than a corresponding Butterworth filter and the signal distortion increases as the number of poles increases. An increase in the peak deviation also increases signal distortion. Distortion also increases with the addition of preemphasis.

Gas flow analysis during thermal vacuum test of a spacecraft

The self-contamination of the IMP-H spacecraft, while it was undergoing thermal and solar vacuum tests, has been investigated in conjunction with the outgassing evaluation and detection of molecular flow anomalies occurring in the test chamber. The pressures indicated by two tubulated ionization gauges were used to calculate flow kinetics in the vacuum chamber. The fluxes of emitted molecules and chamber wall reflected molecules were monitored during the entire test. Representative equations and graphs are presented. Test results indicate that from 3 to 9 of every 100 emitted molecules returned to the spacecraft surface; that self-contamination by noncondensable gases was more severe than that by condensable gases; and that outgassing of the spacecraft was approximately 1.18 x 0.01 g/s after 10 hours and 1.18 x 0.001 after 90 hours of vacuum exposure. Testing deficiencies have been identified, and the type and location of instruments required to measure the outgassing, the degree of contamination, and return flow are discussed.

Attitude dynamic of spin-stabilized satellites with flexible appendages

Equations of motion and computer programs have been developed for analyzing the motion of a spin-stabilized spacecraft having long, flexible appendages. Stability charts were derived, or can be redrawn with the desired accuracy for any particular set of design parameters. Simulation graphs of variables of interest are readily obtainable on line using program FLEXAT. Finally, applications to actual satellites, such as UK-4 and IMP-1 have been considered.
