Utah FORGE: Fiber Optic Cumulative Strain Change and Strain Change Rate Data From Well 16A Stimulation at Well 16B

This dataset includes Rayleigh Frequency Shift (RFS) Distributed Strain Sensing (DSS) cumulative strain change and change rate data. The data was acquired during the stimulation of Utah FORGE Well 16A(78)-32 in April 2024 via fiber installed in Well 16B(78)-32. The fiber optic data was acquired using Neubrex SR7000 RFS DSS Distributed Strain sensing instruments and is saved here in the format of HDF5 files (.h5 extension). The spatial sampling on the full wellbore profiles is 0.20 centimeters. The data is the far field strain change response from a baseline profile made down the 16B well on April 3, 2024, so each strain value represents the strain change or strain change rate at each depth relative to the baseline reference profile. The data arrays for each type share the same dimensions (number of channels and time stamps).

Utah FORGE: Temperature-Dependent Fracture Seismicity from Fluid Injection Experiments

This dataset contains experimental data from fluid injection experiments conducted to investigate the influence of temperature on fracture seismicity. The experiments were performed on granite samples from Utah FORGE. The samples were prepared with a 30-degree inclined fracture and subjected to controlled stress and temperature conditions. Data were collected under three distinct temperature settings: 24 C, 78 C, and 137 C. During the experiments, a constant confining pressure of 10 MPa and a constant shear stress at 80% of the shear strength of the sample were maintained. Pore pressure was incrementally increased at a rate of 300 kPa every three minutes to simulate fluid injection. Temperature was raised rapidly and then stabilized for the duration of each test. The dataset includes shear stress and displacement measurements under each temperature condition, along with supplementary figures illustrating the experimental setup and time-series plots of pressures and temperature.

Physics-preserving enriched Galerkin method for a fully-coupled thermo-poroelasticity model

This paper proposes a new numerical method for a fully-coupled, quasi-static thermo-poroelasticity model in a unified enriched Galerkin (EG) method framework. In our method, the mechanics sub-problem is solved using a locking-free EG method, and the flow and heat sub-problems are solved using a locally-conservative EG method. The proposed method offers mass and energy conservation properties with much lower costs than other methods with the same properties, including discontinuous Galerkin methods and mixed finite element methods. The well-posedness and optimal a priori error estimates are carefully derived. Here, several numerical tests confirm the theoretical optimal convergence rates and the mass and energy conservation properties of the new method.

Utah FORGE: GES Well 16A(78)-32 and Well 16B(78)-32 Stimulation Seismic Event Catalogs

This dataset contains seismic event catalogs from the hydraulic stimulation of wells 16A(78)-32 and 16B(78)-32 at the Utah FORGE site in April 2024. The data was collected by Geo Energy Suisse (GES) using a variety of seismic monitoring technologies, including 3-component (3C) geophones and distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) systems. These technologies were deployed across several locations, including wells 16A, 16B, and Delano-1, with sensor arrays at multiple depths to capture microseismic activity during the stimulations. The catalogs provide both real-time and manually checked seismic event locations, with detailed parameters such as trigger conditions, velocity models, and data acquisition settings. The dataset includes information on the stimulation stages, event rates, and hydraulic injection conditions for each well, with a report detailing the data acquisition configuration and seismic event location methodologies. Users will need to reference the included report for a complete understanding of the sensor network, data processing techniques, and accuracy considerations.

Monitoring spatiotemporal evolution of fractures during hydraulic stimulations at the first EGS collab testbed using anisotropic elastic-waveform inversion

The EGS Collab project acquired continuous active-source seismic monitoring (CASSM) data before, during, and after hydraulic stimulations at the first testbed at the depth of 4850 ft (1478 m) at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota, for monitoring fracture creation and evolution. CASSM acquisition was conducted using 24 hydrophones, 18 accelerometers, and 17 piezoelectric sources within four fracture-parallel wells and two orthogonal wells. 3D anisotropic traveltime tomography and anisotropic elastic-waveform inversion of the campaign cross-borehole seismic data show that the rock within the stimulation region is a heterogeneous horizontal transverse isotropic medium. Here we use these inversion results as the initial models and apply 3D anisotropic first-arrival traveltime tomography and 3D anisotropic elastic-waveform inversion to the CASSM data acquired after each stimulation in May, 2018 and December, 2018. We observe the spatiotemporal evolution of seismic velocities and anisotropic parameters caused by hydraulic fracture stimulations, showing the regions of rock alternation caused by hydraulic fracture stimulation.

Low-Temperature Geothermal Play Fairway Analysis for the Denver Basin

This project is part of a national initiative to showcase the benefits of incorporating low-temperature geothermal resource assessment into the deployment of geothermal heating, combined heat and power (CHP), and geothermal direct-use (GDU) technologies. The initiative was established to accelerate the country's decarbonization efforts by identifying potential for low-temperature geothermal resource utilization (<150 degrees C, e.g., CHP and GDU) in selected sedimentary basins with numerous population centers. The play fairway analysis (PFA) methodologies in this study were adapted from previous PFA investigations of sedimentary basin geothermal play types (SBGPTs) that evaluated the potential for low-temperature resources (<150 degrees C). Workflows, relevant datasets, a new Python library, and common and composite geological criteria maps are utilized to develop low-temperature geothermal resource favorability maps for the Denver Basin, a sedimentary basin spanning Colorado, Nebraska, and Wyoming. The replication of these methodologies in other SBGPTs can evaluate potential for low-temperature resources. To facilitate future assessment of low-temperature geothermal resources in SBGPTs, this project provides PFA workflows, data, tools, and favorability maps that will ultimately support the utilization of low-temperature geothermal resources in sedimentary basins.

Deep Direct-Use Feasibility Study Temperature-Depth Estimates for West Virginia University, Morgantown, WV

This dataset contains data spreadsheets and figures that summarize the results of a stochastic analysis of temperatures at depth below the West Virginia University campus in Morgantown, WV. These results are extracted from a study by Smith (2019), whose results are included in a GDR submission that provides rasters and shapefiles for the Appalachian Basin states of New York, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia (GDR submission #1182). Uncertainties considered included geologic properties, thermal properties, and uncertainty from geostatistical interpolation of the surface heat flow. A Monte Carlo analysis of these uncertain properties was used to predict temperatures at depth using a 1-D heat conduction model. For the pixel corresponding to West Virginia University, a .csv file containing the 10,000 temperature-depth profiles estimated from a Monte Carlo analysis is provided. Temperatures are provided for depths from 1-5 km in 0.5 km increments. These data are summarized in a figure containing violin plots that illustrates the probability of obtaining certain temperatures at depth for Morgantown.
