Performance Improvements for the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Gyroless Extended Kalman Filter

In late 2017, the laser intensity monitor (LIM) current began to decline on the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) miniature inertial measurement unit (MIMU). The MIMU was powered off in March 2018 and has only been used during extended eclipses, a pre-eclipse orbit phasing maneuver, and critical momentum unloads. Science slews were suspended, and the onboard extended Kalman filter (EKF) was disabled. A coarse rate was estimated through star tracker quaternion differentiation, and attitude was provided directly from a single star tracker. A complementary filter, combining the differentiated quaternions with the integrated acceleration derived from the attitude control torque, was developed, tested, and uploaded to the spacecraft in December 2018. The EKF has been enabled, using the complementary filter rate in place of the MIMU and science slews are now being performed. This paper presents an overview of the complementary filter rate estimation and EKF changes, fault detection updates without the MIMU, and inflight performance improvements.

Statistical Error Analysis on White-Light Filter Ratio Experiments to Measure Electron Parameters

The Filter ratio technique to remotely measure electron temperature and speed using four color filters in visible light and a polarization camera was described in detail in four articles by Reginald et al., Solar physics, (2018, 2019a, 2019b, 2020). In these four articles we quantified the systematic error associated with using models of symmetric corona to interpret results from asymmetric corona. We also showed the criteria applied to select the bandwidths of filters, and the pros and cons of replacing the traditional linear polarizer with a polarization camera to measure pB. What started in 1990s as ground experiments conducted during total solar eclipses that lasted for a few minutes lead to a balloon borne experiment lasting eight hours in 2019 and will blossom into a space experiment on the International Space Station in 2023. Due to constraints on the bandwidths of the four filters, a successful mission requires quantification of the statistical error using Monte Carlo simulation to generate two feasibility profiles, which are unique to the design parameters of the coronagraph, to comprehend the feasibility to measure temperature and speed within the desired temporal and spatial resolutions. For the statistical error analysis, we use modeled K and F corona profiles, representative theoretical diffraction, scattering, and vignetting profiles, assumed efficiencies for lenses, mirrors, and polarizers, assumed detector properties on quantum efficiency, full well depth, dark noise, and read noise, and assumed instrument properties on aperture diameter, solid angle, and pixel resolution. We hope future white-light coronagraphs will exhibit capabilities to measure electron density, temperature, and speed.

Novel Infrared-blocking Aerogel Scattering Filters and Their Applications in Astrophysical and Planetary Science Observations

Infrared-blocking scattering aerogel filters have a broad range of potential applications in astrophysics and planetary science observations in the far-infrared, sub-millimeter, and microwave regimes. Successful dielectric modeling of aerogel filters allowed the fabrication of samples to meet the mechanical and science instrument requirements for several experiments, including the Sub-millimeter Solar Observation Lunar Volatiles Experiment (SSOLVE), the Cosmology Large Angular Scale Surveyor (CLASS), and the Experiment for Cryogenic Large-Aperture Intensity Mapping (EXCLAIM). Thermal multi-physics simulations of the filters predict their performance when integrated into a cryogenic receiver. Prototype filters have survived cryogenic cycling to 4 K with no degradation in mechanical properties.

Derivation of Effective Properties Based on Porous Scale Simulations Using Filtering Techniques

This study presents a method for derivation of effective properties at the interface and in-depth of porous materials. The method defines a Representative Elementary Volume (REV) and applies filtering techniques to computer effective properties such as porosity and flow quantities, such as velocity and pressure. The script, developed to process the data was tested on the VTK type files that contain the mesh information and the flow solution. The method allows to choose between two types of filters, such as cellular and top-hat and define the size of the REV and number of samples along the domain. Extraction of the REV from the domain is performed to exact boundaries requested for the user. This is done using a triangulation technique and cutting through the cells to comply to the requested boundaries of the volume. The method can be applied to both structured and unstructured meshes. Filtering the material porosity and flow quantities involves integration of the numerical data. The algorithm provides three integration methods, such as Riemann sum, Monte Carlo and Quadrature rule to perform the integration. The Monte-Carlo technique permits the use of either uniform or linearly spaced distribution of points. The Quadrature rule is currently applicable to tetrahedral element types. The Monte Carlo and Quadrature rule methods require interpolation of the flow quantities at the sample points. For interpolation, two methods were tested and are readily available, Gaussian interpolation and re-sampling. It has been shown that re-sampling method has better consistency and acceptable accuracy in interpolation of the data. The algorithm was written in Python language and uses a number of modules. The major module besides numpy is PyVista. It is used to process the computational domain, clip the REV and interpolate the data. Quadrature rule integration was performed using a quadpy module. ParaView software was used externally to convert the flow solution to the VTK (or more specifically VTU) format. Integration of ParaView in the same environment with PyVista encountered problems and could not be implemented in this work. The developed algorithm is expected to be applicable to unstructured meshes and more complex porous structures as soon as the data can be passed in VTK type format. With the report is provided Python script for filtering the solution and a Matlab script for simple generation and processing of 2-D and 3-D porous channel geometries. The two scripts don't communicate.

Lunar Dust Capture Using a Novel, Multiplexed Inertial Filter

Multiplexed inertial filtration is new. It holds promise to capture and contain lunar dust with less pressure drop. Even when the filter contains significant amounts of captured lunar dust, the pressure drop remains relatively low. State of the art vacuum cleaners use a system with 4 different filter: they can contain large amounts of lunar dust and maintain low pressure drop, but because they require 4 filters, the system size is relatively large. State of the are miniature vacuum cleaners are small, but the single in-line depth filter clogs easily. The goal of this CIF project is to develop a lunar dust vacuum cleaner <1000 cc in size, with high capacity and low dP.

Design of a Thrust Vector Servoelastic Filter for SLS Block 2 Booster Thrust Vector Control System

This paper presents a method to improve the thrust vector servoelastic (TVSE) response of a launch vehicle. TVSE is the coupling between the Thrust Vector Control (TVC) system nozzle dynamics and the vehicle flexible modes. A poorly phased TVC response, i.e. in phase with the structural velocity, can lead to instability of the flexible modes due to the energy injection from the thrust. For large boosters with heavy nozzles, TVSE is more likely to cause instability. This instability is part of the plant dynamics and may not be readily detected by the flight control system. In this paper, TVSE is treated as a disturbance rejection problem with the inertial force of the flexible motion viewed as an external disturbance to the TVC actuator control system. By effectively rejecting this disturbance, the engine can be decoupled from the flexible dynamics thus improving TVSE stability. The actuator disturbance transfer function is modified by inserting a filter into the servo-loop control system. The filter aims to reduce the magnitude and introduce phase lead of the disturbance transfer function over the TVSE sensitive frequency range while maintaining adequate stability margins of the actuator control system. A prefilter is also designed to improve command tracking performance. The filter and prefilter resulting from this method are usually of low order and can be included to an existing actuator controller if the controller is programmable. This method was demonstrated for a hydraulic Simplex actuator model. Its applications to the Space Launch System (SLS) Block 1 and Block 2 TVC actuator are also described. The Block 2 actuator controller was modified based on the results of this method. The tradeoff between TVSE stability and the servo-loop stability can be balanced by adjusting the amount of phase lead introduced by the TVSE filter. This method provides a useful way to solve the TVSE instability issue without costly and time-consuming hardware solutions. This method is based on the basic control principles of loop shaping and disturbance rejection and has been proven to be effective under proper circumstances.

Design of a Thruster Vector Servo-Elastic Filter

This presents a method to improve the thruster vector servo elasticity (TVSE) stability. TVSE is the coupling between the TVC system engine dynamics and the vehicle flexible modes. This instability is part of the plant dynamics and is not detected by the flight control. In this paper, the TVSE is treated as a disturbance rejection problem with the inertial force of the flexible motion viewed as an external disturbance to the TVC actuator control system. By effectively rejecting this disturbance, the engine can be decoupled from the flexible dynamics thus improving TVSE stability. The actuator disturbance transfer function is modified by inserting a TVSE filter into the control system. The filter aims to reduce the magnitude and introduce phase lead of the disturbance transfer function over the TVSE sensitive frequency range while maintaining adequate stability margins of the actuator control system. A prefilter is also designed for good command tracking. The filter and prefilter resulting from this method are usually of low order and can be included to the existing actuator controller if the controller is programmable. This method was demonstrated for a hydraulic Simplex actuator model. Its applications to SLS B1 and B2 TVC actuator are also described. B2 actuator controller is modified based on this method. The tradeoff between TVSE stability and the control system stability can be balanced by adjusting the amount of phase lead introduced by the TVSE filter. This method provides a useful way to solve the TVSE instability issue without costly and time-consuming a TVC system redesign. This method is based on the basic control principles of loop shaping and disturbance rejection and has been proven to be effective under proper circum-stances.

Filter replacement lifetime prediction

A system for increasing filter economy includes a memory configured to receive measurements of contaminants in an internal and an external environment. A cost effectiveness module is configured to determine a cost of a corrosion rate increase if unfiltered external air intake is increased for cooling, to determine a cost of increased air pressure to filter external air, and to determine if the cost of filtering external air exceeds the cost of the corrosion rate increase. An air intake module is configured to increase an intake of unfiltered external air if it is determined that the cost of filtering external air exceeds the cost of the corrosion rate increase.

Address-based filtering for load/store speculation

Address-based filtering for load/store speculation includes maintaining a filtering table including table entries associated with ranges of addresses; in response to receiving an ordering check triggering transaction, querying the filtering table using a target address of the ordering check triggering transaction to determine if an instruction dependent upon the ordering check triggering transaction has previously been generated a physical address; and in response to determining that the filtering table lacks an indication that the instruction dependent upon the ordering check triggering transaction has previously been generated a physical address, bypassing a lookup operation in an ordering violation memory structure to determine whether the instruction dependent upon the ordering check triggering transaction is currently in-flight.

Nonlinear Ensemble Filtering with Diffusion Models: Application to the Surface Quasigeostrophic Dynamics

The intersection between classical data assimilation methods and novel machine learning techniques has attracted significant interest in recent years. Here, we explore another promising solution in which diffusion models are used to formulate a robust nonlinear ensemble filter for sequential data assimilation. Unlike standard machine learning methods, the proposed ensemble score filter (EnSF) is completely training free and can efficiently generate a set of analysis ensemble members. Here, in this study, we apply the EnSF to a surface quasigeostrophic model and compare its performance against the popular local ensemble transform Kalman filter (LETKF), which makes Gaussian assumptions in the analysis step. Numerical tests demonstrate that EnSF maintains stable performance in the absence of localization and for a variety of experimental settings. We find that while LETKF maintains optimal performance in the case of linear observations of the entire state and a perfect model, EnSF shows improvements over LETKF when nonlinear observations are assimilated and the system is subject to unexpected model errors. A spectral decomposition of the analysis results in this nonlinear observation regime shows that the largest improvements over LETKF occur at large scales (small wavenumbers), where LETKF lacks sufficient ensemble spread. Overall, this initial application of EnSF to a geophysical model of intermediate complexity motivates further development of the algorithm for more realistic problems.

The Dynamic Tunability of Memristor-Based Active Filters

When the memristor was fabricated for the first time, it launched an entirely new field of research. Many of the published papers regarding memristors are primarily theoretical and are based on computer simulations. Some recent papers analyze the memristor’s programming circuits, but to the best of the authors’ knowledge, no memristor has been embedded into a commercial analog circuit. This paper is practically oriented and it is based on the experimental results obtained by measurements on the circuit prototype. We present a solution for automated programming of a commercially available memristor and its implementation in tunable active bandpass filter design. The novelty of this paper is that the active bandpass filter’s central frequency could be programmed during the filter operation, so a pause for memristor state-switching is not required. The experimental results are promising, and open up possibilities for the memristor’s application in analog systems.

Filtering adaptive output feedback control for multivariable nonlinear systems with mismatched uncertainties and unmodeled dynamics

This article synthesizes a filtering adaptive output feedback controller for multivariable nonlinear systems with mismatched uncertainties and unmodeled dynamics. The multivariable nonlinear systems under consideration have both matched and mismatched uncertainties, which satisfy the semiglobal Lipschitz condition. The unmodeled dynamics are bounded-input bounded-output stable. By adopting an estimation/cancellation strategy, a piecewise constant adaptive law drives the estimation error to zero at every time instant, which yields the adaptive parameters; a disturbance rejection control law is designed to compensate the nonlinear uncertainties within the bandwidth of low-pass filters. The matched uncertainties are cancelled directly by adopting their opposite in the control signal, while a dynamic inversion of the system is required to eliminate the effect of the mismatched uncertainties on the output. A feedforward control law is designed to track a given command. Since the virtual reference system defines the best performance that can be achieved by the closed-loop system, the uniform performance bounds are derived for the states and control signals via comparison. Both numerical and practical examples are provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed filtering adaptive output feedback control architecture, comparisons with the model reference adaptive control demonstrates the superiority of the proposed control method.

Uptake behavior of 73 As, 75 Se, 197m Hg, 212 Pb and 210 Po on Eichrom pre-filter resin from HCl and HNO 3

We report the extraction of 73 As, 75 Se, 197 mHg, 212 Pb and 210 Po on Eichrom pre-filter resin was studied in HCl and HNO 3 with batch uptake, kinetic and column experiments. There was significant extraction of mercury in HNO 3 and HCl, and polonium and selenium in HCl. The kinetics are sufficient to allow for retention on pre-filter columns, and separations of 73 As from 75 Se and 197 mHg, and 212 Pb from 210 Po are demonstrated. This retention is important for the development of chemical separations as pre-filter resin is commonly used alongside extraction chromatography resins but its potential for uptake of metal ions is not well characterized.

Gapped-filtering for efficient Chebyshev expansion of the density projection operator

In this paper, we develop the gapped-filtering method, whereby a short Chebyshev expansion accurately represents the density-matrix operator. The method optimizes the Chebyshev coefficients to give the correct density matrix at all energies except within the gapped region where there are no eigenstates. Gapped filtering reduces the number of required terms in the Chebyshev expansion compared to traditional expansion methods, as long as one knows or can determine efficiently the HOMO and LUMO positions. The reduction is especially noticeable (factors of 2-3) when high accuracy is sought. To exemplify the method, we use gapped-filtering to increase the efficiency of stochastic-GW calculations.

Analytical closure to the spatially-filtered Euler equations for shock-dominated flows

To ensure numerical stability in the vicinity of shocks, a variety of methods have been used, including shock-capturing schemes such as weighted essentially non-oscillatory schemes, as well as the addition of artificial diffusivities to the governing equations. Centered finite difference schemes are often avoided near discontinuities due to the tendency for significant oscillations. However, such schemes have desirable conservation properties compared to many shock-capturing schemes. The objective of this work is to derive all necessary viscous/diffusion terms from first principles and then demonstrate the performance of these analytical terms within a centered differencing framework. The physical Euler equations are spatially-filtered with a Gaussian-like filter. Sub-filter scale (SFS) terms arise in the momentum and energy equations. Analytical closure is provided for each of them by leveraging the jump conditions for a shock. No SFS terms are present in the continuity or species equations. Here, this approach is tested for several problems involving shocks in one and two dimensions. Implemented within a centered difference code, the SFS terms perform well for a range of flow conditions without introducing excessive diffusion.

A new efficient grain growth model using a random Gaussian-sampled mode filter

This paper presents the use of a Gaussian neighborhood mode filter for predicting grain growth in a manner similar to the solutions obtained by a Monte Carlo Potts model. This flexible grain growth model can quickly utilize modern, computationally optimized data science strategies on graphics processing units to simulate grain growth up to 100 times faster than the state-of-the-art, publicly available Monte Carlo Potts model. We show that, given the correct neighborhood, the mode filter can replicate normal grain growth in two or three dimensions. In addition, the paper briefly demonstrates the ability to model limited anisotropic in grain boundary energy and mobility. Anisotropic grain boundary energy is modeled by defining a weighted mode filter operation. Anisotropic grain boundary mobility is modeled by scaling and orienting the Gaussian neighborhood in a particular direction.

Development of a Filtered CFD-DEM Drag Model with Multiscale Markers Using an Artificial Neural Network and Nonlinear Regression

Here, the accuracy of coarse-grained Euler-Lagrangian simulations of fluidized beds heavily depends on the mesoscale drag models to account for the influences of the unresolved sub-grid structures. Traditional filtered drag models are regressed with mesoscale markers such as voidage and slip velocities. In this research, a filtered drag was regressed with both mesoscale and macro-scale markers using fine grid Computational Fluid Dynamics - Discrete Element Method (CFD-DEM) simulations. The traditional non-linear regression method was compared with machine learning regression using an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) implemented in PyTorch and coupled with MFiX. The new drag showed higher accuracy than the Wen-Yu drag and another filtered drag derived from the two-fluid model. The nonlinear regression shows slightly better results than ANN regression in cases with similar R 2 values. The utilization of the gas inlet velocity as an additional macro-scale marker reduced the errors by up to 55.3% in the tested cases.
