A Bayesian model for visual space perception

A model for visual space perception is proposed that contains desirable features in the theories of Gibson and Brunswik. This model is a Bayesian processor of proximal stimuli which contains three important elements: an internal model of the Markov process describing the knowledge of the distal world, the a priori distribution of the state of the Markov process, and an internal model relating state to proximal stimuli. The universality of the model is discussed and it is compared with signal detection theory models. Experimental results of Kinchla are used as a special case.

Vectorcardiograph

A system for quantitating the cardiac electrical activity of Skylab crewmen was required for three medical experiments (M092, Lower Body Negative Pressure; M171, Metabolic Activity; and M093, In-flight Vectorcardiogram) designed to evaluate the effects of space flight on the human cardiovascular system. A Frank lead vectorcardiograph system was chosen for this task because of its general acceptability in the scientific community and its data quantification capabilities. To be used effectively in space flight, however, the system had to meet certain other requirements. The system was required to meet the specifications recommended by the American Heart Association. The vectorcardiograph had to withstand the extreme conditions of the space environment. The system had to provide features that permitted ease of use in the orbital environment. The vectorcardiograph system performed its intended function throughout all the Skylab missions without a failure. A description of this system follows.

Development of a ground signal processor for digital synthetic array radar data

A modified APQ-102 sidelooking array radar (SLAR) in a B-57 aircraft test bed is used, with other optical and infrared sensors, in remote sensing of Earth surface features for various users at NASA Johnson Space Center. The video from the radar is normally recorded on photographic film and subsequently processed photographically into high resolution radar images. Using a high speed sampling (digitizing) system, the two receiver channels of cross-and co-polarized video are recorded on wideband magnetic tape along with radar and platform parameters. These data are subsequently reformatted and processed into digital synthetic aperture radar images with the image data available on magnetic tape for subsequent analysis by investigators. The system design and results obtained are described.

Double layers and electrostatic shocks

It is shown that it is useful to define double layers and shocks so that the ion phase spaces of double layers are the mirror image (about zero ion velocity) of the ion phase spaces for laminar electrostatic shocks. The distinguishing feature is the direction of the free ion velocity. It is also shown that double layers can exist without the presence of trapped ions. The Bohm condition for double layers, that the ion drift velocity on the high potential side must be greater than the ion sound velocity, is shown to be related to a requirement of a lower limit on the Mach number of laminar electrostatic shocks

An unsupervised classification approach for analysis of Landsat data to monitor land reclamation in Belmont county, Ohio

Two unsupervised classification procedures for analyzing Landsat data used to monitor land reclamation in a surface mining area in east central Ohio are compared for agreement with data collected from the corresponding locations on the ground. One procedure is based on a traditional unsupervised-clustering/maximum-likelihood algorithm sequence that assumes spectral groupings in the Landsat data in n-dimensional space; the other is based on a nontraditional unsupervised-clustering/canonical-transformation/clustering algorithm sequence that not only assumes spectral groupings in n-dimensional space but also includes an additional feature-extraction technique. It is found that the nontraditional procedure provides an appreciable improvement in spectral groupings and apparently increases the level of accuracy in the classification of land cover categories.

Shuttle/payload contamination evaluation /SPACE/ program improvements

Performance features, analytic details, and applications of the SPACE computer code for simulating the contaminant environment experienced by Shuttle payloads on-orbit are outlined. A summary is presented of the model preset, input, and output parameters, capabilities, and analytical options. The program was designed to identify the molecular column density, molecular deposition in various scenarios, and the background brightness produced by the contaminant clouds. SPACE covers payload geometries such as the Orbiter and four Spacelab modules, configurations tracing and summing the production of contamination from distributed leakage sources or concentrated sources. A total of ten chemical species can be analyzed, with consideration given to line-of-sight mass transport or scattered molecule transport. Deposition levels can be computed, as can reflection evaluation. Trial results for the analyses of three different payloads are presented. Additionally, the Mini-SPACE code, for quick-look analyses during the payload planning analyses, is outlined.

Three dimensional CSCM method for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations with application to a multi-nozzle exhaust flowfield

The effective design of three-dimensional flow systems such as a clustered multinozzle shrouded exhaust system requires detailed analysis of the internal flowfield. It is pointed out that new numerical techniques on the most modern vector computers are making these analyses practicable. In this paper, the upwind differenced implicit conservative supracharacteristics method (CSCM) for three-dimensional viscous flow is presented. The new method is an implicit 'method of planes' symmetric Gauss-Seidel relaxation scheme. The data is conveniently stored on successive planes along the streamwise coordinate, and the system of equations is solved twice in each successive plane of the streamwise coordinate. The developed new three-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes algorithm combines the best features of the storage and computationally efficient space marching procedures with the generality of time dependent techniques to solve flows with elliptic and streamwise separated flows.

A tandem mirror plasma source for a hybrid plume plasma propulsion concept

This paper describes a tandem mirror magnetic plasma confinement device to be considered as a hot plasma source for the hybrid plume rocket concept. The hot plasma from this device is injected into an exhaust duct, which will interact with an annular layer of hypersonic neutral gas. Such a device can be used to study the dynamics of the hybrid plume and to experimentally verify the numerical predictions obtained with computer codes. The basic system design is also geared toward being lightweight and compact, as well as having high power density (i.e., several kW/sq cm) at the exhaust. This feature is aimed toward the feasibility of 'space testing'. The plasma is heated by microwaves. A 50 percent heating efficiency can be obtained by using two half-circle antennas. The preliminary Monte Carlo modeling of test particles result reported here indicates that interaction does take place in the exhaust duct. Neutrals gain energy from the ion, which confirms the hybrid plume concept.

SOT: A rapid prototype using TAE windows

The development of the window interface extension feature of the Transportable Applications Executive (TAE) is discussed. This feature is being used to prototype a space station payload interface in order to demonstrate and assess the benefits of using windows on a bit mapped display and also to convey the concept of telescience, the control and operation of space station payloads from remote sites. The prototype version of the TAE with windows operates on a DEC VAXstation 100. This workstation has a high resolution 19 inch bit mapped display, a keyboard and a three-button mouse. The VAXstation 100 is not a stand-alone workstation, but is controlled by software executing on a VAX/8600. A short scenario was developed utilizing the Solar Optical Telescope (SOT) as an example payload. In the scenario the end-user station includes the VAXstation 100 plus an image analysis terminal used to display the CCD images. The layout and use of the prototype elements, i.e., the root menu, payload status window, and target acquisition menu is described.

Turbulent relaxation processes in magnetohydrodynamics

Competing processes previously called 'selective decay' and 'dynamic alignment' are studied numerically for two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic turbulence. In selective decay, the energy decays relatively to mean-square vector potential, and in dynamic alignment, the energy decays relatively to cross helicity. In the former case, the kinetic (fluid) energy decays to zero and the magnetic energy occupies the largest scales allowed by the boundary conditions. In the latter case, the velocity field and magnetic field become aligned and energetically equipartitioned. An extensive study of the initial value problem, with viscous and resistive dissipation, indicates that four distinct regimes of behavior are possible: a magnetically dominated regime, a velocity dominated regime, a dynamic alignment dominated regime, and a transition regime separating the others in parameter space. An analytical variational problem predicts several features seen in the computations, including geometrical alignment of velocity and magnetic fields, constraints on global quantities in the long-time limit, and in some cases, condensation to long wavelength modes.

Post-Challenger evaluation of space shuttle risk assessment and management

As the shock of the Space Shuttle Challenger accident began to subside, NASA initiated a wide range of actions designed to ensure greater safety in various aspects of the Shuttle system and an improved focus on safety throughout the National Space Transportation System (NSTS) Program. Certain specific features of the NASA safety process are examined: the Critical Items List (CIL) and the NASA review of the Shuttle primary and backup units whose failure might result in the loss of life, the Shuttle vehicle, or the mission; the failure modes and effects analyses (FMEA); and the hazard analysis and their review. The conception of modern risk management, including the essential element of objective risk assessment is described and it is contrasted with NASA's safety process in general terms. The discussion, findings, and recommendations regarding particular aspects of the NASA STS safety assurance process are reported. The 11 subsections each deal with a different aspect of the process. The main lessons learned by SCRHAAC in the course of the audit are summarized.

Two Axis Pointing System (TAPS) attitude acquisition, determination, and control

The Two Axis Pointing System (TAPS) is a 2 axis gimbal system designed to provide fine pointing of Space Transportation System (STS) borne instruments. It features center-of-mass instrument mounting and will accommodate instruments of up to 1134 kg (2500 pounds) which fit within a 1.0 by 1.0 by 4.2 meter (40 by 40 by 166 inch) envelope. The TAPS system is controlled by a microcomputer based Control Electronics Assembly (CEA), a Power Distribution Unit (PDU), and a Servo Control Unit (SCU). A DRIRU-II inertial reference unit is used to provide incremental angles for attitude propagation. A Ball Brothers STRAP star tracker is used for attitude acquisition and update. The theory of the TAPS attitude determination and error computation for the Broad Band X-ray Telescope (BBXRT) are described. The attitude acquisition is based upon a 2 star geometric solution. The acquisition theory and quaternion algebra are presented. The attitude control combines classical position, integral and derivative (PID) control with techniques to compensate for coulomb friction (bias torque) and the cable harness crossing the gimbals (spring torque). Also presented is a technique for an adaptive bias torque compensation which adjusts to an ever changing frictional torque environment. The control stability margins are detailed, with the predicted pointing performance, based upon simulation studies. The TAPS user interface, which provides high level operations commands to facilitate science observations, is outlined.
