An interactive graphics program to retrieve, display, compare, manipulate, curve fit, difference and cross plot wind tunnel data

The Aerodynamic Data Analysis and Integration System (ADAIS), developed as a highly interactive computer graphics program capable of manipulating large quantities of data such that addressable elements of a data base can be called up for graphic display, compared, curve fit, stored, retrieved, differenced, etc., was described. The general nature of the system is evidenced by the fact that limited usage has already occurred with data bases consisting of thermodynamic, basic loads, and flight dynamics data. Productivity using ADAIS of five times that for conventional manual methods of wind tunnel data analysis is routinely achieved. In wind tunnel data analysis, data from one or more runs of a particular test may be called up and displayed along with data from one or more runs of a different test. Curves may be faired through the data points by any of four methods, including cubic spline and least squares polynomial fit up to seventh order.

Displays

An experimental investigation made to determine the depth cue of a head movement perspective and image intensity as a function of depth is summarized. The experiment was based on the use of a hybrid computer generated contact analog visual display in which various perceptual depth cues are included on a two dimensional CRT screen. The system's purpose was to impart information, in an integrated and visually compelling fashion, about the vehicle's position and orientation in space. Results show head movement gives a 40% improvement in depth discrimination when the display is between 40 and 100 cm from the subject; intensity variation resulted in as much improvement as head movement.

Visual/motion simulation of CTOL flare and touchdown comparing data obtained from two model board display systems

Acquisition of a modern terrain model board display system for 'out-the-window' scene presentation has allowed for the repetition of an evaluation study of combined visual/motion cues for CTOL flare and touchdown control that was originally carried out on a 1965 vintage landing display system. The motion drive system used in both studies was a nonlinear coordinated adaptive washout based on the method of continuous steepest descent optimization. Comparisons of the results of the studies present flare and touchdown data, as well as dynamic response data, from the two visual landing systems. The new visual system also allowed for the repetition, under visual conditions, of a subjective comparison of a linear and a nonlinear motion washout method done previously under instrument conditions.

The effect of variations in controls and displays on helicopter instrument approach capability

A flight investigation was conducted with a variable stability helicopter to determine the effects of variations in controls and displays on helicopter instrument approach capabilities. The baseline instrument approach task was a decelerating approach to a hover along a 6 deg glide slope. Pilot evaluations were obtained for both the constant speed part of the task and the deceleration and hover part of the task. The attitude stability augmentation system (SAS) was strongly preferred over the rate SAS because the aircraft had a divergent pitch response. From a display variation standpoint, it was not possible to decelerate to a hover in a consistent manner, regardless of the control system employed, with situation information only. In particular, the deceleration and hover part of the task was unacceptable without flight director command information.

Wind information display system user's manual

The Wind Information Display System (WINDS) provides flexible control through system-user interaction for collecting wind shear data, processing this data in real time, displaying the processed data, storing raw data on magnetic tapes, and post-processing raw data. The data are received from two asynchronous laser Doppler velocimeters (LDV's) and include position, velocity and intensity information. The raw data is written onto magnetic tape for permanent storage and is also processed in real time to depict wind velocities in a given spacial region.

Numerical image manipulation and display in solar astronomy

The paper describes the system configuration and data manipulation capabilities of a solar image display system which allows interactive analysis of visual images and on-line manipulation of digital data. Image processing features include smoothing or filtering of images stored in the display, contrast enhancement, and blinking or flickering images. A computer with a core memory of 28,672 words provides the capacity to perform complex calculations based on stored images, including computing histograms, selecting subsets of images for further analysis, combining portions of images to produce images with physical meaning, and constructing mathematical models of features in an image. Some of the processing modes are illustrated by some image sequences from solar observations.

The effect of a visual/motion display mismatch in a single axis compensatory tracking task

An experiment was performed to determine the effect of a performance mismatch between the visual and motion display systems on a real time piloted aircraft simulation. Pilots performed a compensatory roll tracking task with dynamics typical of medium jet transports. Between 0 and 10 rad/sec, visual and motion system responses were equivalent to either unity or a first order lag at 4.8 rad/sec. Pilot describing functions and error scores were calculated. Results show that the mismatch between visual and motion display systems has no significant effect. It is the absence of high frequency visual and/or motion cues which significantly affects pilot performance.

Experimental testing of flight control head up displays

Experiments and tests with 4 generations of head up displays was reported. The CV 191, based on fighter aircraft gunsights was replaced by the CV 193, with several improvements. The CV 193 V incorporates the velocity vector reference mark, eliminates much other data, clusters the rest in a small area of the visual field and is seen together with the outside landscape. The CV 91 presents only velocity vector and total angle of descent data, used when runway and horizon are visible; TC 121 displays an outline of the runway and can be used in visual and instrument approaches.

Full color hybrid display for aircraft simulators

A full spectrum color monitor, connected to the camera and lens system of a television camera supported by a gantry frame over a terrain model simulating an aircraft landing zone, projects the monitor image onto a lens or screen visually accessible to a trainee in the simulator. A digital computer produces a pattern corresponding to the lights associated with the landing strip onto a monochromatic display, and an optical system projects the calligraphic image onto the same lens so that it is superposed on the video representation of the landing field. The optical system includes a four-color wheel which is rotated between the calligraphic display and the lens, and an apparatus for synchronizing the generation of a calligraphic pattern with the color segments on the color wheel. A servo feedback system responsive to the servo motors on the gantry frame produces an input to the computer so that the calligraphically generated signal corresponds in shape, size and location to the video signal.

Display analysis with the optimal control model of the human operator

Application of the optimal control model of the human operator to problems in display analysis is discussed. Those aspects of the model pertaining to the operator-display interface and to operator information processing are reviewed and discussed. The techniques are then applied to the analysis of advanced display/control systems for a Terminal Configured Vehicle. Model results are compared with those obtained in a large, fixed-base simulation.

Simulation and display of macromolecular complexes

In association with an investigation of the interaction of proteins with DNA and RNA, an interactive computer program for building, manipulating, and displaying macromolecular complexes has been designed. The system provides perspective, planar, and stereoscopic views on the computer terminal display, as well as views for standard and nonstandard observer locations. The molecule or its parts may be rotated and/or translated in any direction; bond connections may be added or removed by the viewer. Molecular fragments may be juxtaposed in such a way that given bonds are aligned, and given planes and points coincide. Another subroutine provides for the duplication of a given unit such as a DNA or amino-acid base.

Escort - A data acquisition and display system to support research testing

A combination of a central minicomputer and test-site microcomputers has been adopted to provide on-line data acquisition and display service for a large number of different research programs. By integrating the data acquisition and recording functions in the minicomputer/microcomputer system, rapidly updated displays of selected data in terms of engineering units may be obtained. The system described here is primarily designed for steady-state test conditions, but may also provide data on slow transients associated with changing experimental conditions. Application of the system to full-scale jet engine tests, ion thruster assessments and anechoic chamber analyses are mentioned.
