Gate protective device for SOS array

Protective gate device consisting of alternating heavily doped n(+) and p(+) diffusions eliminates breakdown voltages in silicon oxide on sapphire arrays caused by electrostatic discharge from person or equipment. Diffusions are easily produced during normal double epitaxial processing. Devices with nine layers had 27-volt breakdown.

Spread spectrum communication link using surface wave devices

A fast lock-up, 8-MHz bandwidth 8,000 bit per second data rate spread spectrum communication link breadboard is described that is implemented using surface wave devices as the primary signal generators and signal processing elements. It uses surface wave tapped delay lines in the transmitter to generate the signals and in the receiver to detect them. The breadboard provides a measured processing gain for Gaussian noise of 31.5 dB which is within one dB of the theoretical optimum. This development demonstrates that spread spectrum receivers implemented with surface wave devices have sensitivities and complexities comparable to those of serial correlation receivers, but synchronization search times which are two to three orders of magnitude smaller.

Testing methods and techniques: Testing electrical and electronic devices: A compilation

The methods, techniques, and devices used in testing various electrical and electronic apparatus are presented. The items described range from semiconductor package leak detectors to automatic circuit analyzer and antenna simulators for system checkout. In many cases the approaches can result in considerable cost savings and improved quality control. The testing of various electronic components, assemblies, and systems; the testing of various electrical devices; and the testing of cables and connectors are explained.

Noncontacting device to indicate deflection of turbopump internal rotating parts

Phase 2 (development) which was concluded for the ultrasonic Doppler device and the light-pipe-reflectance device is reported. An ultrasonic Doppler breadboard system was assembled which accurately measured runout in the J-2 LOX pump impeller during operation. The transducer was mounted on the outside of the pump volute using a C-clamp. Vibration was measured by conducting the ultrasonic wave through the volute housing and through the fluid in the volute to the impeller surface. The impeller vibration was also measured accurately using the light-pipe probe mounted in an elastomeric-gland fitting in the pump case. A special epoxy resin developed for cryogenic applications was forced into the end of the fiber-optic probe to retain the fibers. Subsequently, the probe suffered no damage after simultaneous exposure to 2150 psi and 77 F. Preliminary flash X-radiographs were taken of the turbine wheel and the shaft-bearing-seal assembly, using a 2-megavolt X-ray unit. Reasonable resolution and contrast was obtained. A fast-neutron detector was fabricated and sensitivity was measured. The results demonstrated that the technique is feasible for integrated-time measurements requiring, perhaps, 240 revolutions to obtain sufficient exposure at 35,000 rpm. The experimental verification plans are included.

Electrothermal follow display apparatus for electroexplosive device testing

A self-balancing bridge for ascertaining the electrothermal and nonlinear behavior of an electroexplosive device is described. A sinusiodal current is passed through the device which provides a signal in the form of a unique Lissajous display. The display can be qualitatively evaluated and abnormal units can be readily detected.

Docking devices for Soyuz-type spacecraft

Two docking device designs for Soyuz-type spacecraft are compared. The first was flight tested successfully; the second achieves rigid and exact joining of two spacecraft, while incorporating changes to allow for the intravehicular transfer of crew members. The main functions of the docking device are considered, with the means by which they are accomplished, and measures for increasing its reliability and flexibility in service are noted.

Methods of measurement for semiconductor materials, process control, and devices

Significant accomplishments include development of a procedure to correct for the substantial differences of transistor delay time as measured with different instruments or with the same instrument at different frequencies; association of infrared response spectra of poor quality germanium gamma ray detectors with spectra of detectors fabricated from portions of a good crystal that had been degraded in known ways; and confirmation of the excellent quality and cosmetic appearance of ultrasonic bonds made with aluminum ribbon wire. Work is continuing on measurement of resistivity of semiconductor crystals; study of gold-doped silicon, development of the infrared response technique; evaluation of wire bonds and die attachment; and measurement of thermal properties of semiconductor devices, delay time and related carrier transport properties in junction devices, and noise properties of microwave diodes.

Noise in avalanche transit-time devices.

A survey of work performed on noise in avalanche transit-time devices is presented. Both theoretical and experimental results on noise mechanisms and performance of these devices, when they are employed as oscillators, amplifiers, and self-oscillating mixers, are reviewed. Several unexplained experimental results and points of disagreement between the experimental work results of various workers are identified. Suggestions for further studies are offered.

Fast-interface-state losses in charge-coupled devices.

A simple model is presented that makes it possible to predict signal losses in charge-coupled devices due to fast-interface-state trapping. Presented experimental losses in a twelve-bit two-phase charge-coupled device with overlapping Si and Al gates are shown to agree well with the prediction of the model.

The variable magnetic baffle as a control device for Kaufman thrusters.

The variable magnetic baffle described in this paper aids in control of electron flow from the hollow cathode plasma into the main discharge region by augmenting the fringe magnetic field which impedes this electron flow in conventionally baffled Kaufman thrusters. A passive, low loss, and automatic control device is obtained by using the discharge current to excite the control winding. Used in conjunction with typical thruster control loops, stable operation has been obtained over a 10:1 throttling range with a 30 cm thruster. Discharge ignition and overcurrent recycling is also facilitated through use of this device in a permanent magnet thruster.

Landmark navigation rule, a new navigation device.

Two new methods of landmark navigation were recently presented. The landmarks are assumed to be within sight of the navigator but with unknown positions. Both methods require computations which are time consuming when a computer is not available. This correspondence presents the concept of a new navigation device called 'landmark navigation rule' which eliminates all the computation effort required in both new methods. The device is simple in construction, lightweight, and consumes no power.
