Recent MOOSE Update Slides for a DOE CI visit

This is an updated slide deck for which much of the content has been previously cleared. This slide deck incorporates recent NRIC Virtual Test Bed work with several updates on modeling and simulation of benchmark advanced reactor problems. Note that none of the models or results contained within these slides is proprietary. Many of these have been openly published on the Virtual Test Bed.

Initial Progress on Tank Bottom Repair for the DOE EM Tank Waste R&D Program - 25089

Several years prior to the Lab23-EM001 Call Announcement, Washington River Protection Solutions (WRPS) had done a review in identifying tank repair feasibility. [1, 2] The most viable methods of repair identified for the Floor of a Primary Tank identified were Grout Stabilization and Polymer Grout. Grout Stabilization was described as a self-leveling grout which fills the entire bottom of the tank and creates a new or false bottom. These types of materials have been used at the Savannah River Site (SRS) to fill and close waste tanks as well as contaminated spaces within decommissioned reactors. No mention was made as to the chemical composition of these Stabilizing Grouts in the review, however, grouts used at SRS for the mentioned applications have always been a cementitious grout material. A thickness of approximately 12 inches was suggested in the review. It was also suggested that an additional polymeric coating could be applied to this fresh and clean grout surface.

DOE Final Report Machine Learning for Real-time Fusion Plasma Behavior Prediction and Manipulation

This project set out with an ambitious goal: to develop and apply machine learning-based methods of discovering new controllers and operating regimes for achieving better performing plasmas in tokamaks. As summarized in the dozens of papers below, the project was a huge success. It developed several machine learning components and integrated them into a single ML system that was added to the DIII-D PCS. That functionality was demonstrated over a series of experiments on DIII-D. A brief summary of these results is given here with the details in the published papers below.

Investigating Net-Zero Carbon Microgrids for DOE’s National Laboratory Facilities: A Case Study for Idaho National Laboratory

The concept of net-zero carbon microgrids (NZMs) has received significant interest in recent years considering its promises to provide both energy resilience and carbon reduction. This paper investigates the practical constraints of NZM deployment in a government facility, exploring various cases revolving around the objectives of cost, emission, and energy resilience. The technoeconomic results for one of the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) facilities are discussed to identify a practical and economic approach to achieve the net-zero target considering both present and future scenarios. The study shows the carbon reduction, resilience, and economic success of net-zero initiatives are tied directly to the energy portfolio of its electricity provider. The NZMs typically required a hybrid mix of renewable generation and storage assets to maximize onsite clean generation and to provide reliable power during grid outages. Besides supporting the ongoing net-zero effort at INL, this work also provides a framework that can be directly used in other facilities aspiring to become a net zero in the future.
