First-Principles Insights into the Thermodynamics of Variable-Temperature Ammonia Synthesis on Transition-Metal-Doped Cu (100) and (111)

Ammonia (NH 3 ) is one of the most produced chemicals worldwide. NH 3 synthesis predominantly utilizes the Haber–Bosch (HB) process, requiring high temperatures and pressures. Despite significant process advances, ample opportunity remains for improving the rate, selectivity, catalyst stability, and energy efficiency. Inspired by a recently developed programmable heating and quenching (PHQ) technique, we present in this paper a first-principles screening of candidate single-atom alloy catalysts generated from doping (111) and (100) surfaces of copper (Cu), an ineffective HB catalyst in its pure form. We predict the thermodynamics of two rate-limiting reactions, N 2 dissociative adsorption and the final hydrogenation step leading up to NH 3 release, at 400 and 900 K. Thermodynamically, the former reaction is favored at low temperatures, while the latter is favored at high temperatures. Vanadium-, chromium-, and molybdenum-doped Cu surfaces, due to intermediate M–N covalent bonding character, emerge as appealing candidate catalysts for PHQ NH 3 synthesis, as they balance the thermodynamics of the above-mentioned reaction steps at their respective optimal temperatures.

Low-Temperature Activation and Coupling of Methane on MgO Nanostructures Embedded in Cu 2 O/Cu(111)

Here, the efficient conversion of methane into valuable hydrocarbons such as ethane and ethylene at relatively low temperatures without deactivation issues is crucial for advancing sustainable energy solutions. Herein, AP-XPS and STM studies show that MgO nanostructures (0.2-0.5 nm wide, 0.4-0.6 Å high) embedded in a Cu 2 O/Cu(111) substrate activate methane at room temperature, mainly dissociating it into CH x (x = 2 or 3) and H adatoms, with minimal conversion to C adatoms. These MgO nanostructures in contact with Cu 2 O/Cu(111) exhibit unique reactivity, enabling C-C coupling into ethane and ethylene at 500 K, a significantly lower temperature than that required for bulk MgO catalysts (>700 K), with negligible carbon deposition and no deactivation. DFT calculations corroborate these experimental findings. The CH 4,gas → *CH 3 +*H reaction is a downhill process on MgO/Cu 2 O/Cu(111) surfaces. The activation of methane is facilitated by an electron transfer from copper to MgO and the existence of Mg and O atoms with a low coordination number in the oxide nanostructures. The formation of O-CH 3 and O-H bonds overcomes the energy necessary for the cleavage of a C-H bond in methane. DFT studies reveal that smaller Mg 2 O 2 model clusters provide stronger binding and lower activation barriers for C-H dissociation in CH 4 , while larger Mg 3 O 3 clusters promote C-C coupling due to weaker *CH 3 binding. All these results emphasize the importance of size when optimizing the catalytic performance of MgO nanostructures in the selective conversion of methane.

Direct and Indirect Interfacial Electron Transfer at a Plasmonic p-Cu 7 S 4 /CdS Heterojunction

Plasmonic semiconductors exhibit significant potential for harvesting near-IR solar energy, although their mechanisms of plasmon-induced hot electron transfer (HET) are poorly understood. We report a transient absorption study of plasmon-induced HET in p-Cu 7 S 4 /CdS type II heterojunctions. Near-IR excitation of the p-Cu 7 S 4 plasmon band at ~1400 nm leads to ultrafast HET into the CdS conduction band with a time constant of <150 fs and a quantum efficiency of ~0.054%. The injected hot electrons remain in CdS with an amplitude-weighted average lifetime of 1.9 ± 0.5 ns, significantly longer than that in Au/CdS heterostructures, suggesting that plasmonic semiconductors can slow down charge recombination due to the presence of a bandgap. The excited near-IR plasmon does not decay by coupling to the interfacial charge transfer transition, likely due to its energy mismatch. This study provides a detailed mechanistic understanding and possible directions for improving plasmonic HET in plasmonic semiconductor heterojunctions.

Strong Electronic and Magnetic Coupling in M 4 (M = Ni, Cu) Clusters via Direct Orbital Interactions between Low-Coordinate Metal Centers

In this report we present an extensive study of tetranuclear transition-metal cluster compounds M 4 (NP t Bu 3 ) 4 and [M 4 (NP t Bu 3 ) 4 ][B(C 6 F 5 ) 4 ] (M = Ni, Cu; t Bu = tert -butyl), which feature low-coordinate metal centers and direct metal-metal orbital overlap. X-ray diffraction, electrochemical, magnetic, spectroscopic, and computational analysis elucidate the nature of the bonding interactions in these clusters and the impact of these interactions on the electronic and magnetic properties. Direct orbital overlap results in strongly coupled, large-spin ground states in the [Ni 4 (NP t Bu 3 ) 4 ] +/0 clusters and fully delocalized, spin-correlated electrons. Correlated electronic structure calculations confirm the presence of ferromagnetic ground states that arise from direct exchange between magnetic orbitals, and, in the case of the neutral cluster, itinerant electron magnetism similar to that in metallic ferromagnets. The cationic nickel cluster also possesses large magnetic anisotropy exemplified by a large, positive axial zero-field splitting parameter of D = +7.95 or +9.2 cm -1 , as determined by magnetometry or electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, respectively. The [Ni 4 (NP t Bu 3 ) 4 ] + cluster is also the first molecule with easy-plane magnetic anisotropy to exhibit zero-field slow magnetic relaxation, and under a small applied field, it exhibits relaxation exclusively through an Orbach mechanism with a spin relaxation barrier of 16 cm -1 . The S = 1 / 2 complex [Cu 4 (NP t Bu 3 ) 4 ] + exhibits slow magnetic relaxation via a Raman process on the millisecond time scale, supporting the presence of slow relaxation via an Orbach process in the nickel analogue. Overall, this work highlights the unique electronic and magnetic properties that can be realized in metal clusters featuring direct metal-metal orbital interactions between low-coordinate metal centers.

Experimental Evidence and Mechanistic Description of the Phenolic H-Transfer to the Cu 2 O 2 Active Site of oxy-Tyrosinase

Tyrosinase is a ubiquitous coupled binuclear copper enzyme that activates O 2 towards the regioselective monooxygenation of monophenols to catechols via a mechanism that remains only partially defined. Here, we present new mechanistic insights into the initial steps of this monooxygenation reaction by employing a pre-steady state stopped-flow kinetics approach that allows direct measurement of the monooxygenation rates for a series of para-substituted monophenols by oxy-tyrosinase. The biphasic Hammett plot and the associated solvent kinetic isotope effect values provide direct evidence for an initial H-transfer from the protonated phenolic substrate to the Cu 2 O 2 core of oxy-tyrosinase. The correlation of these experimental results to quantum-mechanics/ molecular-mechanics calculations provides a detailed mechanistic description of this H-transfer step. Furthermore, these new mechanistic insights revise and expand our fundamental understanding Cu 2 O 2 active sites in biology.

Structural Transformation and Degradation of Cu Oxide Nanocatalysts during Electrochemical CO 2 Reduction

The electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) holds enormous potential as a carbon-neutral route to the sustainable production of fuels and platform chemicals. The durability for long-term operation is currently inadequate for commercialization, however, and the underlying deactivation process remains elusive. A fundamental understanding of the degradation mechanism of electrocatalysts, which can dictate the overall device performance, is needed. In this work, we report the structural dynamics and degradation pathway of Cu oxide nanoparticles (CuO x NPs) during the CO 2 RR by using in situ small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The in situ SAXS reveals a reduction in the size of NPs when subjected to a potential at which no reaction products are detected. At potentials where the CO 2 RR starts to occur, CuO x NPs are agglomerated through a particle migration and coalescence process in the early stage of the reaction, followed by Ostwald ripening (OR) as the dominant degradation mechanism for the remainder of the reaction. As the applied potential becomes more negative, the OR process becomes more dominant, and for the most negative applied potential, OR dominates for the entire reaction time. The morphological changes are linked to a gradual decrease in the formation rate for multicarbon products (C 2 H 4 and ethanol). Other reaction parameters, including reaction intermediates and local high pH, induce changes in the agglomeration process and final morphology of the CuO x NPs electrode, supported by post-mortem ex situ microscopic analysis. The in situ XAS analysis suggests that the CuO x NPs reduced into the metallic state before the structural transformation was observed. The introduction of high surface area carbon supports with ionomer coating mitigates the degree of structural transformation and detachment of the CuO x NPs electrode. These findings show the dynamic nature of Cu nanocatalysts during the CO 2 RR and can serve as a rational guideline toward a stable catalyst system under electrochemical conditions.

Catalytic Activity of an Ensemble of Sites for CO 2 Hydrogenation to Methanol on a ZrO 2 -on-Cu Inverse Catalyst

The significant increase in CO 2 emissions from heavy fossil fuel utilization has raised serious concerns, highlighting the need for effective methods to convert CO 2 into value-added chemicals. Here, in this work, we report a computational investigation on the catalytic activity of ZrO 2 -on-Cu inverse catalysts for CO 2 hydrogenation to methanol, considering highly dispersed ZrO 2 trimers on Cu (111). Such clusters present a large ensemble of formate-containing configurations, Zr 3 O n (OH) m (OCHO) l , making the evaluation of the catalytic activity very challenging. We found that the sites on the various catalyst configurations exhibit markedly different activities for formate hydrogenation, despite their similar free energy and composition. To understand these differences in reactivity, we examined the structural and electronic nature of the low free-energy catalyst configurations and identified that the energy of the lowest unoccupied orbital of the reacting formate, modified by its binding with the catalytic site, is a descriptor for the reaction energy of the formate hydrogenation step. From there, we screened an ensemble of catalyst structures using this descriptor to predict highly active metastable catalyst configurations and computed the reaction pathways and transition states for formate hydrogenation. From this investigation, we distinguished reactive from nonreactive sites and formate species on the ZrO 2 /Cu inverse catalyst based on structural and electronic features. We showed that rare metastable configurations control the activity. Additionally, an efficient method for examining the reactivity of a large number of coexisting catalyst structures was developed.

Spatially inhomogeneous competition between superconductivity and the charge density wave in YBa 2 Cu 3 O 6.67

The charge density wave in the high-temperature superconductor YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7-x (YBCO) has two different ordering tendencies differentiated by their c-axis correlations. These correspond to ferro- (F-CDW) and antiferro- (AF-CDW) couplings between CDWs in neighbouring CuO 2 bilayers. This discovery has prompted several fundamental questions: how does superconductivity adjust to two competing orders and are either of these orders responsible for the electronic reconstruction? Here we use x-ray diffraction to study YBa 2 Cu 3 O 6.67 as a function of magnetic field and temperature. We show that regions with F-CDW correlations suppress superconductivity more strongly than those with AF-CDW correlations. This implies that an inhomogeneous superconducting state exists, in which some regions show a fragile form of superconductivity. By comparison of F-CDW and AF-CDW correlation lengths, it is concluded that F-CDW ordering is sufficiently long-range to modify the electronic structure. Our study thus suggests that F-CDW correlations impact both the superconducting and normal state properties of YBCO.

Stabilization of three-dimensional charge order through interplanar orbital hybridization in Pr x Y 1–x Ba 2 Cu 3 O 6+δ

The shape of 3d-orbitals often governs the electronic and magnetic properties of correlated transition metal oxides. In the superconducting cuprates, the planar confinement of the d x 2 –y 2 orbital dictates the two-dimensional nature of the unconventional superconductivity and a competing charge order. Achieving orbital-specific control of the electronic structure to allow coupling pathways across adjacent planes would enable direct assessment of the role of dimensionality in the intertwined orders. Using Cu L 3 and Pr M 5 resonant x-ray scattering and first-principles calculations, we report a highly correlated three-dimensional charge order in Pr-substituted YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7 , where the Pr f-electrons create a direct orbital bridge between CuO 2 planes. With this we demonstrate that interplanar orbital engineering can be used to surgically control electronic phases in correlated oxides and other layered materials.

Corrosion evaluation of Al-Cu-Mn-Zr cast alloys in 3.5% NaCl solution

Corrosion behavior of cast Al-Cu-Mn-Zr (ACMZ) and RR350 alloys was compared to a cast 319 alloy in 3.5 wt.% NaCl. After 168 h immersion, ACMZ and RR350 alloys suffered from preferential attack adjacent to intermetallic particles decorated at grain boundaries while the attack in 319 occurred in eutectic Al-Si dendritic boundaries. Electrochemical data allowed semiquantitative comparison of alloy resistance to corrosion initiation, and ACMZ type alloys, including RR350 and three alloys with higher Cu, were considered more resistant than 319 due to the absence of deleterious Si particles. In case of 319, such Si particles presumably drove higher micro-galvanic influence to initiate and sustain Al corrosion. With lower susceptibility to corrosion initiation, ACMZ alloys should exhibit higher or at minimum similar resistance compared to cast 319.

Efficient conversion of low-concentration nitrate sources into ammonia on a Ru-dispersed Cu nanowire electrocatalyst

We report electrochemically converting nitrate ions, a widely distributed nitrogen source in industrial wastewater and polluted groundwater, into ammonia represents a sustainable route for both wastewater treatment and ammonia generation. However, it is currently hindered by low catalytic activities, especially under low nitrate concentrations. Here we report a high-performance Ru-dispersed Cu nanowire catalyst that delivers an industrial-relevant nitrate reduction current of 1 A cm –2 while maintaining a high NH 3 Faradaic efficiency of 93%. More importantly, this high nitrate-reduction catalytic activity enables over a 99% nitrate conversion into ammonia, from an industrial wastewater level of 2,000 ppm to a drinkable water level <50 ppm, while still maintaining an over 90% Faradaic efficiency. Coupling the nitrate reduction effluent stream with an air stripping process, we successfully obtained high purity solid NH 4 Cl and liquid NH 3 solution products, which suggests a practical approach to convert wastewater nitrate into valuable ammonia products. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the highly dispersed Ru atoms provide active nitrate reduction sites and the surrounding Cu sites can suppress the main side reaction, the hydrogen evolution reaction.

High-pressure annealing driven nanocrystal formation in Zr 50 Cu 40 Al 10 metallic glass and strength increase

Pressure-induced structural changes in metallic glasses have been of great interest as they are expected to open new ways to synthesize novel materials with unexpected properties. Here, we investigated the effect of simultaneous high-pressure and high-temperature treatment on the structure and properties of a Zr 50 Cu 40 Al 10 metallic glass by in situ X-ray structure measurement and property analysis of the final material. We found the unusual formation of Cu-rich nanocrystals at high pressure and temperature, accompanied by significant strength and hardness enhancement. Based on reverse Monte Carlo modeling and molecular dynamics simulations, the structure of the metallic glass changed to a densely packed, chemically uniform configuration with high short-range and medium-range ordering at high pressure and temperature. These results show that high-pressure annealing processes provide a new way to improve and control properties without changing their composition.

Synthesis, transport properties and electronic structure of p-type Cu 1+x Mn 2–x InTe 4 ( x = 0, 0.2, 0.3)

The synthesis, electronic structure and temperature dependent transport properties of polycrystalline Cu 1+x Mn 2–x InTe 4 (x = 0, 0.2, 0.3) are reported for the first time. These quaternary chalcogenides were synthesized by direct reaction of the elements, followed by solid state annealing and hot press densification. The thermal conductivity is low for all specimens and intrinsic to the material system. Furthermore, the off-stoichiometry specimens illustrate the sensitivity of the transport properties to stoichiometry, with a greater than two-orders-of magnitude increase in carrier concentration with increased Cu content. First principles calculations of the electronic structure are also reported, and are in agreement with the experimental data. Here, this fundamental investigation shows the potential towards further optimization of the electrical properties that, in addition to the intrinsically low thermal conductivity, provides a basis for further research into the viability of this material system for potential energy-related applications.

Negative thermal expansion and the role of hybridization in perovskite-type PbTiO 3 -Bi(Cu 0.5 Ti 0.5) O 3

PbTiO 3 -BiMeO 3 ferroelectrics have attracted much attention due to not only their extremely large polarization and piezoelectricity but also their controllable thermal expansion. In this study, we present a new binary system of (1 - x)PbTiO 3 -xBi(Cu 0.5 Ti 0.5 )O 3 possessing large tetragonality and enhanced spontaneous polarization. Interestingly, a combination of near zero thermal expansion and negative thermal expansion over a temperature range of RT to T C (~550 °C) has been observed in tetragonal 0.85PbTiO 3 -0.15Bi(Cu 0.5 Ti 0.5 )O 3 . The comprehensive structure analysis addressed that the abnormal thermal expansion is coupled to the spontaneous volume ferroelectrostriction. Moreover, the chemical bonding investigation by a maximum entropy method further attests that the covalent hybridization of Pb/Bi–O bonds plays a vital role in the improved ferroelectricity and interacts with thermal vibration to dominate the crossover from positive to negative thermal expansion. fINALLY, The present studies would give direct evidence to verify the theoretical calculations and could be extended to reveal the nature of thermal expansion in ferroelectrics.

Robust fluorescent calcium coordination polymers as Cu 2+ sensors with high sensitivity and fast response

A three-dimensional (3D) and highly fluorescent calcium-based coordination polymer (Ca-CP) has been synthesized and structurally characterized. Furthermore, built on a strongly fluorescent (FL) chromophore ligand, [Ca(H 2 tcbpe)(H 2 O) 2 ] (1) (H 4 tcbpe = 4',4''',4''''',4'''''''-(ethene-1,1,2,2-tetrayl)tetrakis(([1,1'-biphenyl]-4-carboxylic acid))) is highly luminescent. Photoluminescence (PL) studies indicate that 1 undergoes a bathochromic shift in emission energy from blue to green color upon outgassing or under mechanic force. Notably, 1 exhibits selective FL sensing for Cu 2+ ions with a detection limit (LOD) of 0.064 ppm, far below the U.S. WHO and EPA standard for drinking water. Detailed investigation of the sensing mechanism reveals that uncoordinated COO– groups in 1 play a major role in recognizing Cu 2+ ions.

Eco-friendly, solution-processable and efficient low-energy lighting phosphors: copper halide based hybrid semiconductors Cu 4 X 6 (L) 2 (X = Br, I) composed of covalent, ionic and coordinate bonds

A series of copper halide based inorganic–organic hybrid semiconductors have been synthesized. Structural analysis confirms that all compounds are composed of one-dimensional Cu 4 X 6 2- anionic chains that coordinate to cationic ligands via Cu–N dative bonds. Different coordination affinities of the ligands lead to two types of ligand arrangements with various structural distortions. All compounds are highly resistant to heat and moisture as a result of the combination of coordinate and ionic bonds. Low energy emission with high efficiency is achieved for these compounds and the emission energy (~552–615 nm) and color (yellow-orange) can be tuned by varying the ligand and halogen element. The electronic structure and luminescence mechanism are examined by both experimental and theoretical methods. More importantly, all compounds demonstrate good solubility in polar aprotic solvents, a desired property that is absent in all other CuX hybrid families of extended structures, which is attributed primarily to the ionic nature of this material class. Furthermore, the good solution-processability, and cost effective and easily scalable synthesis coupled with high quantum efficiencies and framework stability make these hybrid materials promising phosphors for general lighting applications.

Trends and descriptors of heterogeneous hydroformylation activity and selectivity of RhM 3 (M = Fe, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn) catalysts

Here monometallic Rh/MCM-41 and bimetallic RhM 3 /MCM-41 (M = Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, or Zn) catalysts are synthesized and tested for vapor-phase ethylene hydroformylation reaction. Co is found to exhibit a significant promotion effect on the selectivity of hydroformylation to C 3 oxygenates, followed by Fe and Cu, with Ni and Zn showing a negative effect. DFT calculations reveal that the addition of a secondary metal can provide a new type of site, being able to selectively tune the binding energies of reaction intermediates, and thus lead to different catalytic performances.
