Extensional Flow of Bulk Polymers

A study was made of the behavior of polyisobutylene under motion at a constant stretch history for both strip biaxial extensional flow and simple extensional flow. Steady-state non-Newtonian viscosities were observed at various constant stretch histories. Newtonian viscosities for both strip biaxial and simple extensional flow were found to be in agreement with the classical theory. The results of the study provide an essential part of the experimental background necessary for the development of a new general stress-strain-time relation for uncrosslinked and lightly crosslinked polymers.

Development of thermally stable phosphonitrile elastomers for advanced aerospace structures

Attempts to prepare low molecular weight, curable poly-(fluoroalkoxyphosphazenes) have been successful. Derivatization of /Cl2PN/n polymer with alkoxides gave functionally reactive terpolymers. These terpolymers could be crosslinked with polyisocyanates at room temperature. Attempts to control molecular weight have not been as successful. The effects of (Cl2PN)3 monomer purity, use of (Cl2PN)3,4 mixture, and early termination of the bulk polymerization of (Cl2PN)3 were studied briefly. Both low and high molecular weight polymers were obtained. Reaction of NH4Cl with PCl5 with subsequent heating to give chain extension gave either gels of oils with molecular weights of several thousand. The stabilization of poly-(fluoroalkoxyphosphazene) was investigated. The results generally were inconclusive, but acids were found to be deleterious while bases had little discernible effect. Improvements in stability by modification of end groups was inconclusive.

Development of modified poly(perfluoropropyleneoxide) urethane systems for use in liquid oxygen and in enriched 100 percent oxygen atmosphere

This program consisted of two separate though related phases. The initial phase was directed toward improving the mechanical and adhesive properties of the very highly fluorinated-polyurethane resin system derived from the hydroxyl-terminated polyperfluoropropylene oxide and 6-chloro-2,4,5-trifluoro-m-phenylene diisocyanate. Various new curing agents for this system were investigated, with the goal of providing a more thermally stable crosslink (cure) mechanism to provide wider applicability and fuller utilization of the outstanding oxygen resistance of the PFPO system. Complete resistance to liquid- and gaseous-oxygen impact at presures as high as 1035 N/sq cm were attained with the use of the PFPO resin castings. The second corollary phase was directed toward investigating the feasibility and optimization of the allophanate cured, urethane extended polymer derived from hydroxyl-terminated polyperfluoropropyleneoxide and 6-chloro-2,4,5-trifluoro-m-phenylene diisocyanate, as the adhesive system for use in a weld-bond configuration for liquid oxygen tankage. The synthesis and application procedures of the adhesive system to insure liquid oxygen compatibility (under 10 kg-m loading), and the development of procedures and techniques to provide high quality weld-bonded joint configurations were studied.

Development of thermally stable phosphonitrile elastomers for advanced aerospace structures

Both high and low molecular weight, curable poly(fluoroalkoxy phosphazene) terpolymers were prepared. These terpolymers resulted from reaction of (Cl2PNn) polymer with alkoxides derived from CF3CH2OH and C3F7CH2OH, and an alkoxide derived from CH3CH(OH)C2H4OH. The terpolymers were crosslinked with polyisocyanates at room temperature. High molecular weight materials were converted into isocyanate prepolymers which as films underwent moisture cures at room temperature. Prepolymer solutions were stable for several days, and showed good adhesion. Also the effects of polymerization of (Cl2PN)3 were studied. Purified octachlorophosphazene, thiocyanate salts, or hydrogen chloride were employed in attempts to decrease molecular weight. Hydrogen chloride was found to be a good agent for preparation of low molecular weight poly(dichloro phosphazene).

Manufacture and static firing of X259-E6 rocket motor serial number XJ04/0001

A single motor was cast and static fired to demonstrate the performance of high energy crosslinked double base (XLDB) propellant in standard X259 rocket motor hardware. Prior to motor fabrication, the motor was analyzed to predict the results of static firing the X259 motor loaded with XLDB propellant. As a result of the analyses, a forward dome shrinkage liner was added to the design. With this design change it was determined that adequate margins of safety existed. The motor, designated the X259-E6 model with serial number XJ04/0001, was fabricated using a slurry-casting technique and was assembled with a standard X259-B4 nozzle which had the nozzle throat machined to a smaller inside diameter than the B4 model and the exit cone cut short for Bacchus Works altitude expansion. The motor was static fired on 20 February 1974 with the nozzle failing during motor operation. Nozzle failure was attributed to spalling of the throat material leading to complete nozzle break-up. However, the propellant functioned as predicted in the motor chamber, ignition was normal, and char and erosion of the internal insulator were as expected.

Potential seal candidates for high-energy propellants

Five potential seal candidates (linear Tefzel, linear Halar, crosslinked Halar, Viton ECD-006, and phosphazine fluoroelastomer) were evaluated for the orbital maneuvering system of the space shuttle. Since this system employs nitrogen tetroxide (N2O4) and monomethyl hydrazine (MMH) as hypergolic propellants, the seal candidates were selected on the basis of projected chemical resistance as well as rheological behavior. Chemical resistance to these high-energy fuels was determined via conventional isothermal and thermal cycling immersion tests. Rheological measurements, however, were performed on O-rings molded from the subject seal candidates. Properties determined, such as cyclic work and hysteresis, stress relaxation, and indicated modulus, therefore, relate to the O-ring seals themselves.

Isomer effects on polyimide properties

Polyimide polymers which are thermally stable and processable are developed. The addition of alkyl substituents to an aromatic ring in the polymer backbone is examined along with polyimide precursor amines containing functional groups that allow for post-cure crosslinking. The synthesis of key monomers is reported, including 2,4,6-tris (m-aminobenzyl) 1,3,5-trimethyl benzene and 2,4,6-tris (p-aminobenzyl) 1,3,5-trimethyl benzene. The preparation of a key monomer, 2,5,3-triamino benzophenone, is reported.

Development of anion-selective membranes

Methods were studied of preparing anion-exchange membranes that would have low resistance, high selectivity, and physical and chemical stability when used in acidic media in a redox energy storage system. Of the twelve systems selected for study, only the system that was based on crosslinked poly-4-vinylpyridinium chloride produced physically strong membranes when equilibrated in l M HCl. The resistivity of the best membrane was 12 ohm-cm, and the transference number for chloride ions was 0.81.

Development of polyphenylquinoxaline graphite composites

Six polyphenylquinoxalines (PPQ) containing pendant cyano (CN) groups were synthesized. The polymers were characterized in terms of inherent viscosity, glass transition temperature, softening temperature and weight loss due to aging in air at 316 C (600 F). The potential for crosslinking PPQs by trimerization of pendant CN groups was investigated. A polymer derived from 1 mole 3,3,4,4 -tetraaminobenzophenone, .2 mole p-bis(p -cyanophenoxyphenylglyoxalyl)benzene and .8 mole p-bis(phenylglyoxalyl)benzene was selected for more extensive characterization in HM-S graphite fiber-reinforced composites. Mechanical properties were determined using composites made from HM-S fiber and polymer and composites made from HM-S fiber, polymer and a potential CN group trimerization catalyst. Composite mechanical properties, inter-laminar shear strength and flexure properties, were determined over the temperature range of +21 C to 316 C.

Thermal analysis of PMR-polyimides by dielectrometry

A preliminary study was conducted to determine the dielectric properties of glass fabric reinforced composites as influenced by the reactions occurring during the preparation of crosslinked polyimides by the PMR process. The variables studied included: formulated molecular weight, staging temperature and time; rate of temperature increase to cure temperature; and cure temperature and time. The changes of capacitance and, particularly, of dissipation factor were found to be strongly dependent on each of the variables studied.

A description of the mechanical behavior of composite solid propellants based on molecular theory

Both the investigation and the representation of the stress-strain response (including rupture) of gum and filled elastomers can be based on a simple functional statement. Internally consistent experiments are used to sort out the effects of time, temperature, strain and crosslink density on gum rubbers. All effects are readily correlated and shown to be essentially independent of the elastomer when considered in terms of non-dimensionalized stress, strain and time. A semiquantitative molecular theory is developed to explain this result. The introduction of fillers modifies the response, but, guided by the framework thus provided, their effects can be readily accounted for.

Syntheses and degradations of fluorinated heterocyclics

The relative stability of two ring systems, the triazine rings and 1,2,4-oxadiazoles, which offer potential crosslinks useful for curing perfluoroalkyl ether elastomers, has been investigated. Tris (perfluoro-n-heptyl)-s-triazine, the perfluoroether substituted-s-triazine, 1,4-bis/(5-perfluoro-n-heptyl)-1,2,4-oxadiazolyl/benzene, its perfluoroalkyl ether substituted analog, and 3,5-bis-(perfluoro-n-heptyl)-1,2,4-oxadiazole were synthesized and subjected to thermal and oxidative degradation at 235 and 325 C and to hydrolytic degradation at 235 C. The perfluoroalkyl ether substituted triazine and 3,5-bis(perfluoro-n-heptyl)-1,2,4-oxadiazole were found to be stable under all conditions investigated.

Variability of ultimate properties of elastomers

The measurement of the ultimate properties of elastomers is characterized by variability in the data. For example, when a sufficient number of specimens is tested, distributions in the values of the stress-at-break, strain-at-break, and time-to-break are commonly obtained. It is pointed out that such variability can be rationalized on the basis of variations in both the degree of crosslinking and in the size of naturally occurring flows present in the elastomer.

Study of improved resins for advanced supersonic technology composites. Part 1: Heteroaromatic polymers containing ether groups. Part 2: Curing chemistry of aromatic polymers and composite studies

Fourteen ether-containing, aromatic dianhydrides have been synthesized from N-phenyl-3 or 4-nitrophthalimide and various bisphenols. The process involves nucleophilic displacement of activated nitro groups with bisphenolate ions. Ether-containing dianhydrides were indefinitely stable in the presence of atmospheric moisture. One-step, high temperature solution polymerization of the ether-containing dianhydrides with m-phenylene diamine, 4,4'-oxydianiline and 1, 3-bis(4-aminophenoxy)benzene afforded 42 polyetherimides. The polyetherimides were all soluble in m-cresol except two which were found to be crystalline. The glass transition temperatures of the polyetherimides ranged from 178 to 277 C. Soluble polybenzimidazopyrrolones containing ether groups were also prepared from the same ether-containing dianhydrides and aromatic tetraamines by one-step solution polymerization. Using low molecular weight polyetherimides, various thermoset resin systems were developed and tested as matrices for fiber-reinforced composites. The curing chemistry involving reaction of the phthalonitrile group and the o-diaminophenyl group was found to be generally applicable to crosslinking various aromatic polymers other than polyimides.

Cross Linking and Degradation Mechanisms in Model Sealant Candidates

Model compounds were investigated as to which type of heterocyclic ring is the most advantageous for curing sealants based on perfluoroalkylether chains. The relative thermal, thermal oxidative, hydrolytic, and fuel stability of potential crosslinks were determined. Specifically substituted materials were synthesized and evaluation of their stabilities in air, inert atmosphere, water, and Jet-A fuel at 235 and 325 C was made. Three heterocyclic ring systems were considered, namely, triazine, 1,2,4- and 1,3,4-oxadiazoles.
