High energy neutrino absorption and its effects on stars in close X-ray binaries

The physics and astrophysics of high energy neutrino production and interactions in close X-ray binary systems are studied. These studies were stimulated by recent observations of ultrahigh energy gamma-rays and possibly other ultrahigh energy particles coming from the directions of Cygnus X-3 and other binary systems and possessing the periodicity characteristics of these systems. Systems in which a compact object, such as a neutron star, is a strong source of high energy particles which, in turn, produce photons, neutronos and other secondary particles by interactions in the atmosphere of the companion star were considered. The highest energy neutrinos are absorbed deep in the companion and the associated energy deposition may be large enough to effect its structure or lead to its ultimate disruption. This neutrino heating was evaluated, starting with a detailed numerical calculation of the hadronic cascade induced in the atmosphere of the companion star. For some theoretical models, the resulting energy deposition from neutrino absorption may be so great as to disrupt the companion star over an astronomically small timescale of the order of 10,000 years. Even if the energy deposition is smaller, it may still be high enough to alter the system substantially, perhaps leading to quenching of high energy signals from the source. Given the cosmic ray luminosities required to produce the observed gamma rays from cygnus X-3 and LMX X-4, such a situation may occur in these sources.

A VLSI architecture of a binary updown counter

A pipeline binary updown counter with many bits is developed which can be used in a variety of applications. One such application includes the design of a digital correlator for very long baseline interferometry (VLBI). The advantage of the presently conceived approach over the previous techniques is that the number of logic operations involved in the design of the binary updown counter can be reduced substantially. The architecture design using these methods is regular, simple, expandable and, therefore, naturally suitable for VLSI implementation.

Can binary stars test solar models?

The position in the H-R diagram of the approximately solar-mass component of the Hyades eclipsing binary, HD 27130, is compared with the predictions of stellar structure theory. The stellar models are calibrated by matching a model with the solar heavy element composition and age to the solar radius and luminosity. The comparison to the Hyades binary then is a test of the prediction that the initial solar luminosity was only about 0.7 times the present solar luminosity. The agreement is satisfactory, lending a measure of confidence to the solar model employed, provided that the initial helium abundance of the Hyades stars is not greater than that of the sun and is not less by more than about 0.03 in Y. Unless the model is grossly incorrect, the inference of Stromgren, Olsen, and Gustafsson (1982) from the 'Hyades anomaly' in intermediate-band photometry that Y(Hyades) is less than Y(solar) by 0.1 or 0.15 is rejected by the observed properties of HD 27130.

The binary fission origin of the moon

The major arguments for and against the binary fission model of lunar origin are reviewed. Unresolved problems include: (1) how the protoearth acquired sufficient angular velocity to fission, and (2) how the earth-moon system lost its excess angular momentum after fission. Despite these uncertainties, the compositional similarities between the earth's mantle and the bulk moon suggest that the fission model is worth considering. The proposed sequence of events in the formation of the moon by binary fission is given.

Cellular-dendritic transition in directionally solidified binary alloys

The microstructural development of binary alloys during directional solidification is studied. Cellular growth data for the Al-Cu and Pb-Sn binary alloy systems are analyzed in order evaluate the criteria of Kurz and Fisher (1981) and Trivedi (1984) for cellular-dendritic transition. It is observed that the experimental growth values do not correlate with the Kurz and Fisher or Trivedi data.

Spectroscopic observations of the symbiotic binary RW Hydrae

Ultraviolet/optical spectrophotometry and infrared photometry show that the symbiotic binary RW Hya is comprised of an M giant (with L of about 1000 solar luminosities) and a compact object (with L of about 200 solar luminosities) which resembles the central star of a planetary nebula. The luminosity of the hot component is produced by a nuclear shell source which is replenished by the wind of the red giant at a rate of about 10 to the -8th solar mass/yr. Results indicate that the binary is surrounded by an H II region (of radius of about 10 AU) which gives rise to the observed emission lines and radio emission. The He(2+) and O(2+) regions are found to be confined to the immediate vicinity of the hot component.

Radio emission from RS CVn binaries. II - Polarization and spectral properties

Multiepoch radio observations of circular polarization and spectral characteristics of several close, late-type stellar binaries are reported. The median luminosity of four well-studied systems ranged from 16.2 to 17.1 ergs/s/Hz. For individual systems, the fractional circular polarization decreases with increasing luminosity, particularly at frequencies above 5 GHz. Eclipsing binaries have significantly lower average circular polarization compared with noneclipsing systems. Helicity reversal is almost always observed between 1.4 and 4.9 GHz for systems with high orbital inclination. Comparison with ten years of previously published polarization observations for two RS CVn stellar systems show that the same helicity occurs at a given frequency for a given source, indicating a very stable, large-scale magnetic field geometry. These spectral and polarization characteristics strongly support a model of inhomogeneous gyrosynchrotron emission arising from electrons with power law energy spectra interacting with inhomogeneous magnetic fields.

Rapid variability of P Cygni lines in massive X-ray binaries

In early-type X-ray binaries, the recombination time scales for ions such as C IV, Si IV, and N V in the stellar winds of their massive OB companion stars can be very short compared to typical X-ray pulsation or fluctuation time scales. Thus, the authors predict that the 'bleached zones', in which these ions are removed from the stellar wind by X-ray photoionization, will track the X-ray beam as it rotates and that the P Cygni line profiles due to these ions will pulsate. With the IUE satellite the authors obtained low-resolution UV spectra of the binary X-ray system HD 77581/4U 0900-40 resolved into six phase bins of the 283 s pulse period; the observed upper limit to the pulse amplitude of the equivalent width of C IV 1550 A was less than the predicted value. However, the pulsations should be easy to observe with the Hubble Space Telescope.

Dendritic solidification in a binary alloy melt - Comparison of theory and experiment

A simple model for 'constrained' growth of an 'array' of cells or dendrites in a binary alloy melt, in the presence of a positive temperature gradient in the liquid ahead of the tips, is presented. The cell or dendrite tip radius is calculated by adopting both the 'ad hoc' assumption of minimum undercooling at the tips as well as the more recently proposed hypothesis of dendritic growth under conditions of 'marginal stability'. Theoretical predictions of the model have been compared with experimental data in binary succinonitrile-acetone alloys. It has been shown that, according to the present model, the 'marginally stable' state may be virtually indistinguishable from the 'minimum undercooled' state, under the usual conditions of dendritic growth.

Numerical calculations of mass transfer flow in semi-detached binary systems

The details of the mass transfer flow near the inner Lagrangian point in a semidetached binary system are numerically calculated. A polytropic equation of state with n = 3/2 is used. The dependence of the mass transfer rate on the degree to which the star overfills its Roche lobe is calculated, and good agreement with previous analytic estimates is found. The variation of mass transfer rate which occurs if the binary system has a small eccentricity is calculated and is used to cast doubt on the model for superhumps in dwarf novae proposed by Papaloizou and Pringle (1979).

A test of the massive binary black hole hypothesis - Arp 102B

The emission-line spectra of several AGN have broad peaks which are significantly displaced in velocity with respect to the host galaxy. An interpretation of this effect in terms of orbital motion of a binary black hole predicts periods of a few centuries. It is pointed out here that recent measurements of the masses and sizes of many low-luminosity AGN imply orbital periods much shorter than this. In particular, it is found that the elliptical galaxy Arp 102B is the most likely candidate for observation of radial velocity variations; its period is expected to be about 3 yr. The H-alpha line profile of Arp 102B has been measured for 5 yr without detecting any change in velocity, and it is thus found that a rather restrictive observational test of the massive binary black hole hypothesis already exists, albeit for this one object.

Far-infrared emission in single and binary galaxies

The properties of the far-IR emission from a sample of optically selected isolated galaxies is studied using data obtained by the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS). This set of galaxies is used as a standard of comparison representing galaxies whose far-IR properties have been little influenced by interaction with their surroundings. An optically selected sample of isolated binary galaxies is then considered. For the binary galaxies, no extreme highly luminous IR emitters are found, reaffirming the rarity of these objects. However, the occurrence of some low-level enhancement of infrared activity is substantiated by the comparison of far-IR emission in single galaxies and those found to have nearby companions. This effect may be influenced by the occurrence of a few instances of more luminous galaxies. Indeed, many galaxies that show evidence for interaction, i.e., distortion, tails, etc., do not show enhanced IR emission.

The Algol-like binary TT Hydrae - The stars, circumstellar matter, and superionized plasma

This paper reports on superionized UV emission lines discovered in TT Hydrae (HD 97528), a semidetached eclipsing binary system in the Southern-Hemisphere sky. The list of emission lines observed is typical for interacting nondegenerate binaries of the Algol type, but with system-specific relative-intensity characteristics. The primary component of the system is a B9.5 V main-sequence star with effective temperature of 9800 K. Its mass equals 2.25 solar masses; the radius is 1.9 solar radii; and surface gravity log g equals 4.23. The secondary star has a mass of 0.41 solar mass and fills its critical Roche lobe. Evidence obtained on mass interaction supports the conclusion that HD 97528 is a normal semidetached system.

L151-81A/B - A unique white dwarf binary with DB and DA components

Spectroscopic observations of the wide binary L151-81A/B reveal that both components are white dwarfs with spectral types DB3 and DA4, the first such binary identified in a comprehensive survey of Luyten and Giclas common proper motion pairs. Assuming log g = 8, measurements of the helium line profiles in the DB primary yield Teff = 16,000 + or - 2,000, while the hydrogen profiles for the DA companion yield Teff =12,000 + or - 2,000. The existence of a helium-rich/hydrogen-rich degenerate pair offers several interesting tests of theoretical white dwarf formation channels and surface abundance evolution.

The long-period semi-detached giant binary system 5 Ceti

The binary system 5 Ceti consists of a K3 III star at or near its Roche lobe and a small hot companion best studied in the satellite ultraviolet. The hot radiation source at the secondary star is immersed in the chromosphere of the K giant, and the slight enhancements of a few UV absorption lines at secondary minimum are used to estimate chromospheric column densities. The variability and flatness of the spectrum is evidence for considering the object a main-sequence star accreting mass by way of Roche-lobe overflow at the rate of 5 X 10 to the minus 7 solar masses/yr. Thus 5 Ceti may represent the elusive rapid stage of mass transfer in which matter is lost from the shrinking Roche lobe of the more massive star. The Fe II UV spectrum in interacting binaries is also discussed.

Iron K lines from low-mass X-ray binaries

Models are presented for the 6-7 keV iron line emission from low-mass X-ray binaries. A simplified model for an accretion disk corona is used to examine the dependence of the observable line properties, line width and mean energy, on the radial distance of the emission region from the X-ray source, and on the fraction of the X-rays from the source which reach the disk surface. The effects of blending of multiple line components and of Comptonization of the line profile are included in numerical calculations of the emitted profile shape. The results of these calculations, when compared with the line properties observed from several low-mass X-ray binaries, suggest that the broadening is dominated either by rotation or by Compton scattering through a greater optical depth than is expected from an accretion disk corona.
