(abstract) PV Technology for Low Intensity, Low Temperature (LILT) Applications

As a result of the recent NASA emphasis on smaller, lower cost space missions, PV is now being considered for a number of missions operating at solar distances of 3 AU or greater. In the past, many of these missions would utilize an RTG (radioisotope thermoelectric generator). Historically, silicon solar cell behavior at these distances has been compromised by a number of mechanisms including shunting, nonohmic back contacts, and the 'broken knee' curve shape. The former two can usually be neglected for modern silicon cells, but the latter has not been eliminated. This problem has been identified with localized diffusion at the top contact/silicon interface which leads to structural changes at the local junction. This is believed to create a resistive metal-semiconductor-like (MSL) interface in parallel with the junction which results in the characteristic forms of the LILT (low intensity, low temperature) 'broken knee'. This paper discusses a TaSiN contact barrier that will prevent the MSL structure in the junction.

(abstract) An Assessment of Electric Propulsion Research, Development, and Application in the United States

This paper will discuss the development of Electric Propulsion technology in the U.S. from the 1960's to the present. It will summarize the various activities related to arcjets, resistojets, pulsed plasma thrustors, magneto-plasma-dynamic thrustors, ion engines, and more recently the evaluation of Hall effect thrustors of the SPT or Anode Layer type developed in Russia. Also, demonstration test flight and actual mission applications will be summarized. Finally, the future application of electric propulsion to near-term commercial communications satellites and planetary missions will be projected. This history is rich in diversity, and has involved a succession of types of thrustors, propellants, and electric power sources. With the recent use of arcjets on commercial communication satellites and the flight tests of ion engines for this application, it appears that electric propulsion is finally on the verge of wide spread application.

Rapid particle generation from an STL file and related issues in the application of material point methods to complex objects

Abstract In this paper, we focus on three issues related to applications of material point methods (MPMs) to objects with complex geometries. They are material point generation, compatibility of material points with a mesh, and sensitivity to mesh orientation. An efficient method of generating material points from a stereolithography (STL) file is introduced. This material point generation method is independent of the mesh used in MPM calculations. The compatibility between the material points and the mesh is then studied. We also show that the original MPM and the dual domain material point (DDMP) method are sensitive to mesh orientation. These issues are related to the calculation of the internal force and are concerns of the MPMs. They become more prominent when MPMs are applied to complex geometries. Our numerical results show that the recently developed local stress difference (LSD) algorithm (Perez et al. in J Comp Phys 498:112681, 2024) can be used to effectively address them.

Quantum thermodynamic devices: From theoretical proposals to experimental reality

Thermodynamics originated in the need to understand novel technologies developed by the Industrial Revolution. However, over the centuries, the description of engines, refrigerators, thermal accelerators, and heaters has become so abstract that a direct application of the universal statements to real-life devices is everything but straight forward. Furthermore, the recent, rapid development of quantum thermodynamics has taken a similar trajectory, and, e.g., “quantum engines” have become a widely studied concept in theoretical research. However, if the newly unveiled laws of nature are to be useful, we need to write the dictionary that allows us to translate abstract statements of theoretical quantum thermodynamics to physical platforms and working mediums of experimentally realistic scenarios. To assist in this endeavor, this review is dedicated to provide an overview over the proposed and realized quantum thermodynamic devices and to highlight the commonalities and differences of the various physical situations.
