Rhenium-osmium-isotope constraints on the age of iron meteorites

Rhenium and osmium concentrations and the osmium isotopic compositions of iron meteorites were determined by negative thermal ionization mass spectrometry. Data for the IIA iron meteorites define an isochron with an uncertainty of approximately +/-31 million years for meteorites about 4500 million years old. Although an absolute rhenium-osmium closure age for this iron group cannot be as precisely constrained because of uncertainty in the decay constant of Re-187, an age of 4460 million years ago is the minimum permitted by combined uncertainties. These age constraints imply that the parent body of the IIAB magmatic irons melted and subsequently cooled within 100 million years after the formation of the oldest portions of chondrites. Other iron meteorites plot above the IIA isochron, indicating that the planetary bodies represented by these iron groups may have cooled significantly later than the parent body of the IIA irons.

The semicircular shell of CTB 109

The radio and X-ray images of the supernova remnant CTB 109 have the morphology of a semicircular shell. It is shown that such a structure is a natural result of a supernova explosion that occurred 3,000 yr ago near an interface between the diffuse interstellar medium and a dense molecular cloud. The calculated X-ray, infrared, and radio fluxes agree fairly well with the observed values.

The Manson impact structure - Its contribution to impact materials observed at the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary

The Manson impact structure (MIS) in Iowa is an excellently preserved complex crater that formed 65.7 Ma ago at the K/T boundary. Drill and seismic data have been used to identify three primary terranes within the 35-km diameter crater: (1) an outermost ring graben composed of listric normal fault blocks that structurally preserve Paleozoic and Cretaceous strata, impact ejecta, and possibly earliest Tertiary lake sediments; (2) a crater moat region of slumped and fallback materials overlain by Tertiary lake sediments in most areas; and (3) a central peak of uplifted basement rock capped in many areas by impact breccia. It is argued that concentrations of Ir at a K/T boundary exposure near Gubbio, Italy and clasts of glass reported from the K/T boundary in Haiti are consistent with possible production in the MIS.

A comparison of solar wind and estimated solar system xenon abundances - A test for solid/gas fractionation in the solar nebula

The solar Xe elemental abundance is determined here using solar wind measurements from lunar ilmenites which are normalized to Si by spacecraft data. The results are compared with estimated abundances assuming no fractionation. When corrected for solar wind/photospheric fractionation, the Xe-130 abundance given by surface layer oxidation of ilmenite from solid 71501 exposed within the last 200 m.y. is 0.24 +/- 0.09 normalized to Si = 10 exp 6. This is indistinguishable from estimates made assuming no solid/gas fractionation. Results from breccia 79035 ilmenite exposed at least 1 Gyr ago indicate that the solar wind Xe flux may have been significantly higher relative to other noble gases, perhaps due to more efficient Xe ionization. If this is true, fluxes of C and S, which have first ionization potentials similar to Xe, should also be higher in the ancient solar wind from the same time period.

Rb-Sr and Sm-Nd chronology of an Apollo 17 KREEP basalt

The paper determines Sm-Nd and Rb-Sr mineral isochrons for an Apollo 17 KREEP (pigeonite) basalt clast from breccia 72275 collected from Boulder 1, Station 2 in the Valley of Taurus-Littrow. Sm-Nd analyses of the basalt yield a precise mineral isochron age of 4.08 +/-0.07 Ga for lambda(Sm-147) = 0.00654/Ga. The concordancy of Sm-Nd and Rb-Sr ages for the basalt suggests that it crystallized about 4.08 Ga ago. Distinct ages and initial Sr isotopic ratios for Apollo 17 KREEP basalts and Apollo 14 and 15 KREEP suggest that these two types of KREEP basalts were not derived from the same source. Apollo 17 KREEP basalts are contemporaneous with some Apollo 14 aluminous mare basalts. The ages and Sr and Nd isotopic data suggest that these two different types of basalts were produced from sources having similar Rb/Sr ratios but different Sm/Nd ratios.

The breakup of a meteorite parent body and the delivery of meteorites to earth

Whether many of the 10,000 meteorites collected in the Antarctic are unlike those falling elsewhere is contentious. The Antarctic H chondrites, one of the major classes of stony meteorites, include a number of individuals with higher induced thermoluminescence peak temperatures than observed among non-Antarctic H chondrites. The proportion of such individuals decreases with the mean terrestrial age of the meteorites at the various ice fields. These H chondrites have cosmic-ray exposure ages of about 8 million years, experienced little cosmic-ray shielding, and suffered rapid postmetamorphic cooling. Breakup of the H chondrite parent body, 8 million years ago, may have produced two types of material with different size distributions and thermal histories. The smaller objects reached earth more rapidly through more rapid orbital evolution.

The star formation history of the Large Magellanic Cloud

Deep photometric observations of stars in three fields of the LMC are presented, and these data are interpreted using synthetic CMDs and LFs generated from overshoot models. The field CMDs and LFs with a star formation rate that experienced a large increase (4 +/- 0.5) x 10 exp 9 yr ago is successfully modeled. The precise age of this 'burst' depends sensitively on the characteristics of the models. Classical (i.e., nonovershoot) models yield a burst age about 2 x 10 exp 9 yr younger than the value obtained. An initial mass function with slope of 2.35 (the Salpeter value) and a mean field star metallicity of Fe/H of about -0.7 are consistent with the photometric data and LFs. It is suggested that the star formation rate in the LMC was globally quite low during at least the first half of its lifetime, and that a major event triggered a substantial and relatively sudden increase in the star formation rate throughout the entire LMC which persisted for several 10 exp 9 yr and even up to the present epoch in some parts of that galaxy.

Chemistry in circumstellar disks - CS toward HL Tauri

High spatial and spectral resolution dust continuum and CS line-emission maps of the material immediately surrounding HL Tauri are presented. The 3.06-thermal dust map gives an upper limit to the source size of roughly 200 AU. When combined with previous millimeter continuum measurements, a beta value of 1.2 +/-0.3 is derived along with a disk mass of 0.1 solar mass, in agreement with previous disk radiative transfer models of the IR and submillimeter flux from HL Tau. The low dust emissivity index as compared to particles in the diffuse ISM is best explained by grain growth or composition evolution. The present observations of the CS and CO emission lines forming the molecular cloud surrounding HL Tauri are consistent with the 'canonical' temperatures, densities, and abundances derived in other Taurus cloud cores. In contrast, the CS emission in aperture synthesis maps at 650-AU spatial resolution is most consistent with CS/CO ratios at least 25-50 times lower in the gas immediately surrounding HL Tauri if the CS emission is optically thin. The continuum and spectral line results obtained are strong indicators of conditions thought to be similar to those in the presolar nebula some 4.5 AE ago.

The evolutionary history of the interacting Galaxy system NGC 7714/7715 (Arp 284)

The distribution and kinematics of atomic hydrogen in an interacting galaxy pair are studied to develop a model of its formation and assess its implications. H I gas peaks, bridges, and tails for NGC 7714/7715 (Arp 284) are identified with the VLA observations, and the velocity field appears to indicate that of an inclined rotating disk. A parabolic off-center collision is modeled for two disk galaxies with different masses, and formation scenario leads to results consistent with the observations. The point of closest approach occurred 1.1 x 10 exp 8 years ago, and the inclination angle for NGC 7714 is given at around 30 deg. This ring galaxy's lack of star formation is attributed to the large impact parameter associated with the parabolic off-center collision considered for Arp 284. Star formation and the initial mass function of the interacting galaxy pair are studied to assess the age and composition of the objects.

Origins of the rings of Uranus and Neptune. I - Statistics of satellite disruptions

The origin of the rings of Uranus and Neptune is considered by performing two types of stochastic simulations of the collisional history of small moons: Monte Carlo simulations in which only the largest surviving fragments from each disruption is followed, and a Markov chain approach which makes it possible to follow the size distribution from each disruption to arbitrarily small sizes. Results indicate that the population of small satellites around Uranus and Neptune have evolved through catastrophic fragmentation since the end of planet and satellite formation 3 to 4 billion years ago.

Improved ablative materials for the ASRM nozzle

Rayon precursor carbon-cloth phenolic was developed more than 30 years ago and is used in most nozzles today including the Poseidon, Trident, Peacekeeper, Small ICBM, Space Shuttle, and numerous tactical and space systems. Specifications and manufacturing controls were placed on these materials and, once qualified, a no-change policy was instituted. The current material is acceptable; however, prepreg variability does not always accommodate the requirements of automation. The advanced solid rocket motor requires material with less variability for automated manufacturing. An advanced solid rocket motor materials team, composed of NASA, Thiokol, Aerojet, SRI, and Lockheed specialists, along with materials suppliers ICI Fiberite/Polycarbon, BP Chemicals/Hitco, and Amoco, embarked on a program to improve the current materials. The program consisted of heat treatment studies and standard and low-density material improvements evaluation. Improvements evaluated included fiber/fabric heat treatments, weave variations, resin application methods, process controls, and monitors.

Recent advances in chemical evolution and the origins of life

Consideration is given to the ideas of Oparin and Haldane who independently suggested more than 60 years ago that the first forms of life were anaerobic, heterotrophic bacteria that emerged as the result of a long period of chemical abiotic synthesis of organic compounds. It is suggested that at least some requirements for life are met in the Galaxy due to the cosmic abundance of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and other biogenic elements; the existence of extraterrestrial organic compounds; and the processes of stellar and interstellar planetary formation.

The enigmatic jets of NGC 1097

We use deep optical images, spectroscopy, and radio observations of the optical jets in NGC 1097 to constrain models for their origin. Our detection limit on 20-cm radio emission from the region of the optical jets is ten times fainter than previous results. We detect no steep-spectrum emission at 90-cm associated with fossil radio lobes. If star formation in the optical jets was triggered by ejection of relativistic matter from an active nucleus, the time of activity was at least 10 million years ago.

Ulysses radio and plasma wave observations in the Jupiter environment

The Unified Radio and Plasma Wave (URAP) experiment has produced new observations of the Jupiter environment, owing to the unique capabilities of the instrument and the traversal of high Jovian latitudes. Broad-band continuum radio emission from Jupiter and in situ plasma waves have proved valuable in delineating the magnetospheric boundaries. Simultaneous measurements of electric and magnetic wave fields have yielded new evidence of whistler-mode radiation within the magnetosphere. Observations of auroral-like hiss provided evidence of a Jovian cusp. The source direction and polarization capabilities of URAP have demonstrated that the outer region of the Io plasma torus supported at least five separate radio sources that reoccurred during successive rotations with a measurable corotation lag. Thermal noise measurements of the Io torus densities yielded values in the densest portion that are similar to models suggested on the basis of Voyager observations of 13 years ago. The URAP measurements also suggest complex beaming and polarization characteristics of Jovian radio components. In addition, a new class of kilometer-wavelength striated Jovian bursts has been observed.

Sudbury project (University of Muenster-Ontario Geological Survey): Sr-Nd in heterolithic breccias and gabbroic dikes

One major objective of our Sudbury project was to define origin and age of the huge breccia units below and above the Sudbury Igneous Complex (SIC). The heterolithic Footwall Breccia (FB) represents a part of the uplifted crater floor. It contains subrounded fragments up to several meters in size and lithic fragments with shock features (greater than 10 GPa) embedded into a fine- to medium-grained matrix. Epsilon(sub Nd)-epsilon(sub Sr) relationships point to almost exclusively parautochthonous precursor lithologies. The different textures of the matrix reflect the metamorphic history of the breccia layer; thermal annealing by the overlying hot impact melt sheet (SIC) at temperatures greater than 1000 C resulted in melting of the fine crushed material, followed by an episode of metasomatic K-feldspar growth and, finally, formation of low-grade minerals such as actinolite and chlorite. Isotope relationships in the Onaping breccias (Gray and Green Member) are much more complex. All attempts to date the breccia formation failed: Zircons are entirely derived from country rocks and lack the pronounced Pb loss caused by the heat of the slowly cooling impact melt sheet (SIC). Rb-Sr techniques using either lithic fragments of different shock stages or the thin slab method, set time limits for the apparently pervasive alkali mobility in these suevitic breccias. The data array and the intercept in the plots point to a major Rb-Sr fractionation around 1.54 Ga ago. This model age is in the same range as the age obtained for the metasomatic matrix of the FB. Rb-Sr dating of a shock event in impact-related breccias seems to be possible only if their matrix had suffered total melting by the hot melt sheet (FB) or if they contain a high fraction of impact melt (suevitic Onaping breccias), whereas the degree of shock metamorphism in rock or lithic fragments plays a minor role. In the Sudbury case, however, the impact melt in the seuvitic breccias is devitrified and recrystallized, which changed Rb/Sr ratios quite drastically. Therefore, the Onaping breccias give only age limits for alteration and low-grade metamorphism. The Sm-Nd system was not reset during the Sudbury event; clasts as well as the matrix in the FB and in the Onaping breccias show preimpact 'Archean' Nd isotope signatures.

The Cretaceous-Tertiary (K/T) impact: One or more source craters?

The Cretaceous-Tertiary (K/T) boundary is marked by signs of a worldwide catastrophe, marking the demise of more than 50 percent of all living species. Ever since Alvarez et al. found an enrichment of IR and other siderophile elements in rocks marking the K/T boundary and interpreted it as the mark of a giant asteroid (or comet) impact, scientists have tried to understand the complexities of the K/T boundary event. The impact theory received a critical boost by the discovery of shocked minerals that have so far been found only in association with impact craters. One of the problems of the K/T impact theory was, and still is, the lack of an adequate large crater that is close to the maximum abundance of shocked grains in K/T boundary sections, which was found to occur in sections in Northern America. The recent discovery of impact glasses from a K/T section in Haiti has been crucial in establishing a connection with documented impact processes. The location of the impact-glass findings and the continental nature of detritus found in all K/T sections supports at least one impact site near the North American continent. The Manson Impact Structure is the largest recognized in the United States, 35 km in diameter, and has a radiometric age indistinguishable from that of the Cretaceous-Tertiary (K/T) boundary. Although the Manson structure may be too small, it may be considered at least one element of the events that led to the catastrophic loss of life and extinction of many species at that time. A second candidate for the K/T boundary crater is the Chicxulub structure, which was first suggested to be an impact crater more than a decade ago. Only recently, geophysical studies and petrological (as well as limited chemical) analyses have indicated that this buried structure may in fact be of impact origin. At present we can conclude that the Manson crater is the only confirmed crater of K/T age, but Chicxulub is becoming a strong contender; however, detailed geochemical, geochronological, and isotopic data are necessary to provide definitive evidence.

Coincidences in time of the Imbrium Basin impact and Apollo 15 KREEP volcanic series: Impact-induced melting?

On the Earth there may be no firm evidence that impacts can induce volcanic activity. However, the Moon does provide a very likely example of volcanism induced by an immense impact: the Imbrium Basin-forming event was immediately succeeded by a crustal partial melting event that released KREEP lava flows over a wide area. These two events are presently indistinguishable in radiometric age. The sample record indicates that such KREEP volcanism had not occurred in the region prior to that time, and never occurred again. Such coincidence in time implies a genetic relationship between the two events, and impact-induced partial melting appears to be the only candidate process. This conclusion rests essentially on the arguments that: (1) the Imbrium Basin event took place 3.86 +/- 0.02 Ga ago; (2) the Apennine Bench Formation postdates Imbrium; (3) the Apollo 15 KREEP basalts are 3.85 +/- 0.03 Ga old; (4) the Apollo 15 KREEP basalts are derived from the Apennine Bench Formation; and (5) the Apollo 15 KREEP basalts are volcanic. Thus, the Apollo 15 KREEP basalts represent a unique volcanic unit that immediately postdates the Imbrium event (within 20 Ma, possibly much less). The evidence for the links in the argument are sketched, and some implications for initial conditions are described. Ramifications of the process for the early history of the Earth are briefly explored.

Unified Viscoplastic Behavior of Metal Matrix Composites

The need for unified constitutive models was recognized more than a decade ago in the results of phenomenological tests on monolithic metals that exhibited strong creep-plasticity interaction. Recently, metallic alloys have been combined to form high-temperature ductile/ductile composite materials, raising the natural question of whether these metallic composites exhibit the same phenomenological features as their monolithic constituents. This question is addressed in the context of a limited, yet definite (to illustrate creep/plasticity interaction) set of experimental data on the model metal matrix composite (MMC) system W/Kanthal. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that a unified viscoplastic representation, extended for unidirectional composites and correlated to W/Kanthal, can accurately predict the observed longitudinal composite creep/plasticity interaction response and strain rate dependency. Finally, the predicted influence of fiber orientation on the creep response of W/Kanthal is illustrated.
