Moisture effects on the high-temperature strength of fiber-reinforced resin composites.

Under NAS 8-27435, the Convair Aerospace Division of General Dynamics and their subcontractor, Hercules Incorporated, have conducted studies on the effects of moisture on the properties of fiber-reinforced resin composites and on the epoxy resins presently used in advanced composites. Data are presented on the resins and composites subjected to varying time/temperature/humidity or time/temperature/water-boil exposures. The effects of moisture on matrix, reinforcement, and fiber/resin interface are discussed and supported by experimental test data.

On the use of first order rotor dynamics in multiblade coordinates

This paper is directed to the question of how to represent most efficiently rotor/body coupling in a linear flight dynamics analysis. Rigid body pitch, roll and vertical motions are considered for the rotor/body coupling studies. Flapping stability limits, eigenvalues, transient responses to control step inputs, to step gusts and to random gusts are determined for a hypothetical hingeless compound helicopter operating up to .8 advance ratio. Data are obtained for the basic helicopter and for the craft with two simple control feedback systems. While complete periodic system modeling is necessary for determining flapping stability limits and vibrations, constant system modeling using first order dynamics in each of the multiblade rotor coordinates was found to be adequate for rotor-craft stability and response computations.

Hingeless rotor theory and experiment on vibration reduction by periodic variation of conventional controls

A preliminary evaluation is made of the concept of vibration reduction by properly selected oscillatory collective and cyclic control applications. The investigations are based on experimental frequency response data covering advance ratios from approximately 0.2 to 0.85. Because there was no instrumentation for the measurement of the pitch and roll vibrations, these values were obtained by properly adding up the flap-bending moments at 3.3 in. Any other quantity representing pitch/roll vibrations can be compensated for in the same fashion. The calculated control inputs required for vibration reduction stay within acceptable limits. For four of the five conditions tested they are smaller than the values used for the frequency response tests. As to be expected, the compensating controls greatly affect the blade loads, i.e., torsion, flap- and chordwise bending.

An evaluation of the sandwich beam in four-point bending as a compressive test method for composites

The experimental phase of the study included compressive tests on HTS/PMR-15 graphite/polyimide, 2024-T3 aluminum alloy, and 5052 aluminum honeycomb at room temperature, and tensile tests on graphite/polyimide at room temperature, -157 C, and 316 C. Elastic properties and strength data are presented for three laminates. The room temperature elastic properties were generally found to differ in tension and compression with Young's modulus values differing by as much as twenty-six percent. The effect of temperature on modulus and strength was shown to be laminate dependent. A three-dimensional finite element analysis predicted an essentially uniform, uniaxial compressive stress state in the top flange test section of the sandwich beam. In conclusion, the sandwich beam can be used to obtain accurate, reliable Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio data for advanced composites; however, the ultimate compressive stress for some laminates may be influenced by the specimen geometry.

Stimulated plasma instability and nonlinear phenomena in the ionosphere

Several hundred topside ionograms were used to study simulated wave-particle interactions in the ionosphere. The study combined the benefits of high-frequency-resolution Alouette 2 analog sounder data with advanced digital graphics techniques. The study shows that the sounder phase can cause significant plasma heating when the plasma parameter is confined to specific ranges. The observations support the Harris instability generation process and the nonlinear Landau damping maintaining process for long-duration diffuse resonances. The observations also suggest that the so-called Q resonances have characteristics which imply that generation processes in a sounder-stimulated plasma turbulence may be involved.

Laser velocimeter measurements of the flow fields around single- and counter-rotation propeller models

A two-component LV system was used to make detailed measurements of the flow field around both a single-rotation and a counter-rotation propeller/nacelle. The conditions measured for the single-rotation tractor configuration include two different blade angles and two propeller advance ratios, and for the counter-rotation propeller configuration include both pusher and tractor mounts. The measurements show the increasing slipstream velocities and contraction with increasing blade angle and with decreasing advance ratios. Data for the counter-rotation system show that the aft propeller turns the flow in the opposite direction from the front propeller. Additionally, the LV system was used as a diagnostic tool to provide data to explain the large side force measured on the propeller/nacelle at angle-of-attack.

Rotorcraft flight research with emphasis on rotor systems

Over fifty years of contributions by NASA and the Army through rotor systems flight research were examined with an emphasis on the last 25 years. During this time, the helicopter has gone from an abnormality that did a few useful things to a vehicle that is a necessity to life in this country and a major part of all military forces in the world. Major data acquisition programs like the H-34 and White Cobra have been undertaken that have increased the understanding of the aerodynamic behavior of the rotor system. Specialized programs like the Ogee tip on the UH-1 and the flight tests of the hingeless rotor helicopters, the XH-13 and XH-51N, contributed greatly to the understanding of these technologies. The extensive airfoil test program also undertaken on the White Cobra provided valuable data on advanced airfoil configurations.

Estimating satellite pose and motion parameters using a novelty filter and neural net tracker

A system for determining the position, orientation and motion of a satellite with respect to a robotic spacecraft using video data is advanced. This system utilizes two levels of pose and motion estimation: an initial system which provides coarse estimates of pose and motion, and a second system which uses the coarse estimates and further processing to provide finer pose and motion estimates. The present paper emphasizes the initial coarse pose and motion estimation sybsystem. This subsystem utilizes novelty detection and filtering for locating novel parts and a neural net tracker to track these parts over time. Results of using this system on a sequence of images of a spin stabilized satellite are presented.

Cloud cover analysis with Arctic Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer data. II - Classification with spectral and textural measures

The spectral and textural characteristics of polar clouds and surfaces for a 7-day summer series of AVHRR data in two Arctic locations are examined, and the results used in the development of a cloud classification procedure for polar satellite data. Since spatial coherence and texture sensitivity tests indicate that a joint spectral-textural analysis based on the same cell size is inappropriate, cloud detection with AVHRR data and surface identification with passive microwave data are first done on the pixel level as described by Key and Barry (1989). Next, cloud patterns within 250-sq-km regions are described, then the spectral and local textural characteristics of cloud patterns in the image are determined and each cloud pixel is classified by statistical methods. Results indicate that both spectral and textural features can be utilized in the classification of cloudy pixels, although spectral features are most useful for the discrimination between cloud classes.

A new generation of high performance engines for spacecraft propulsion

Experimental data validating advanced engine designs at three thrust levels (5, 15, and 100 lbF) is presented. All of the three engine designs considered employ a Moog bipropellant torque motor valve, platelet injector design, and iridium-lined rhenium combustion chamber. Attention is focused on the performance, robustness, duration, and flexibility characteristics of the engines. It is noted that the 5- and 15-lbF thrust engines can deliver a steady state specific impulse in excess of 310 lbF-sec/lbm at an area ratio of 150:1, while the 150-lbF thrust engines deliver a steady state specific impulse of 320 lbF-sec/lbm at an area ratio of 250:1. The hot-fire test results reveal specific impulse improvements of 15 to 25 sec over conventional fuel film cooled columbium chamber designs while operating at maximum chamber temperatures.
