Radioactive decay energy conversion of beta particle emitting cerium 144 into high voltage electricity in coaxial cylinder cell
Seebeck effect solid state switch was developed eliminating thermoelectric generator switch voltage drops. Semiconductor switches were fabricated from materials with large Seebeck coefficients, arranged such that Seebeck potential is generated with such polarity that current flow is aided.
Formula and process have been developed for coating refractory metal surfaces with high voltage electrical insulation for use at temperatures to 600 C. Coatings were specifically developed as an insulation for the surface of a perforated, molybdenum, ion-accelerator grid, but are not limited to this application.
Newly developed Gunn oscillator is three-terminal device which consists of piece of gallium arsenide with source, drain, and gate contacts. Voltage tunable three-terminal device does not require bulky resonant cavity and allows oscillation frequency to be rapidly tuned with simple circuitry.
Circuit which integrates spacecraft gyro output voltages to provide analog position signals has been developed. Accurate integration is provided by all solid state system which uses no choppers and takes advantage of commercially available flight qualified components.
The internal structure of painted and unpainted aluminum alloy sheet samples from the TV camera shrouds were examined by high-voltage transmission electron microscopy. No clear-cut evidence of radiation damage effects was observed. Noticeable differences in microstructures between the upper visor and the sides and bottom of the lower shroud suggest different thermal histories, and the maximum temperatures due to solar heating are estimated to be between 164 and 319 C. Some correlation between microstructures and maximum estimated temperature is noted. It is felt that the apparent temperature rise due to solar heating will not affect the structural integrity of spacecraft components except possibly for very long periods of exposure. However, substantial thermal diffusion could affect interpretation of solar wind rare gas studies.
Lunar pyroxene 10044 specimens cleaved and sectioned by diamond knife ultramicrotomy were examined by standard (75 to 100 kV) and high voltage (200 kV) electron microscopy and diffraction. Salient findings based on evaluation of 2000 plates show uniform 300 to 600 A-wide bands, probably corresponding to single crystal domains, with lattice spacings of 2. A High resolution bright and dark field images of iron-rich and magnesium-rich crystals were compared with corresponding electron diffraction patterns. Possible relations of observed structures to magnetic domains were considered.
The current drainage from a plasma through approximately 0.05 cm diameter holes in Kapton H polymide film, FEP type C, and quartz (7940 Corning glass) placed on a probe at voltages up to 2000 volts dc have been determined both analytically and experimentally. A Laplace field was used to numerically predict an upper limit for the drainage current. The measured current was less than the calculated current for the FEP and quartz, and the two were approximately in agreement for Kapton H. The measured currents were on the order of 5 microamperes with the calculated currents on the order of 10 microamperes.
Experimental observations of the production of dc and harmonic voltages are described in superconductors subjected to superimposed dc and oscillatory magnetic fields. The attempt is made to account for these observations in a qualitative manner by relating them to the asymmetric flux flow induced by the magnetic fields in the superconductor samples. The observed effects are quite complex and depend on the values of the many parameters in the experiment. Regarding some of the observed phenomena, for which no satisfactory explanation is as yet available, further understanding is expected to come from detailed work on samples with asymmetric surfaces produced in a controlled fashion.
Silicon controlled rectifier opens circuit with currents flowing up to values of 30 amperes. Switching concept halves both current and voltage in middle of commutating cycle thereby lowering size and weight requirements. Commutating circuit can be turned on or off by command and will remain on in absence of load due to continuous gate.
Information in nomograph is derived from data obtained from RF-breakdown tests on components of uniform and nonuniform geometry. Nomograph also can be used in design work to predict breakdown margins; if operational minimum pressure is established giving minimum value on nomograph, minimum breakdown voltage consistent with allowed value can be predicted.
A thin pressure-sensitive FCC for low voltage usage is described. It is recommended for installing in speakers, intercoms, doorbells, burglar alarms, and clocks, without running wires between walls. The specifications are given.
The purpose of the short-circuit voltage transducer is to provide engineering data to aid the evaluation of array performance during flight. The design, fabrication, calibration, and in-flight performance of the transducers onboard the Mariner 6, 7 and 9 spacecrafts are described. No significant differences were observed in the in-flight electrical performance of the three transducers. The transducers did experience significant losses due to coverslides or adhesive darkening, increased surface reflection, or spectral shifts within coverslide assembly. Mariner 6, 7 and 9 transducers showed non-cell current degradations of 3-1/2%, 3%, and 4%, respectively at Mars encounter and 6%, 3%, and 4-12%, respectively at end of mission. Mariner 9 solar Array Test 2 showed 3-12% current degradation while the transducer showed 4-12% degradation.
The high voltage solar array offers improvements in efficiency, weight, and reliability for the electric propulsion power system. Conventional power processes and problems associated with ion thruster operation using SERT 2 experience are discussed and the advantages of the HVSA concept for electric propulsion are presented. Tests conducted operating the SERT 2 thruster system in conjunction with HVSA are reported. Thruster operation was observed to be normal and in some respects improved.
Photovoltaic characteristics have been measured on a large number of crucible-grown lithium-containing solar cells irradiated by 1-MeV electrons to fluences ranging from 3 x 10 to the 13th power to 3 x 10 to the 15th power electrons per sq cm. These measurements have established empirical relationships between cell photovoltaic parameters and lithium donor density gradient. Short-circuit current and maximum power measured immediately after irradiation decrease logarithmically with lithium gradient. Open-circuit voltage increases logarithmically with lithium gradient both immediately after irradiation and after recovery, the degree of recovery being strongly gradient-dependent at high fluence. As a result, the maximum power and the power at 0.43 V after recovery from 3 x 10 to the 15th power electrons per sq cm increase with increasing lithium gradient.
A linear voltage-tunable null device was predicted, fabricated, and tested. This filter is conceptually a distributed parameter RC representation of the channel of a MOSFET in a network configuration with a second MOSFET that is treated as a variable resistor. Classical transmission-line theory is used to predict a linear tuning curve with applied bias for the device. This concept was used to design a null device having a null that is linearly tunable in the range of 100 kHz. Such devices were fabricated and tested. Typical MOS processing steps were used and the resulting structures are compatible with the planar technology. The compatibility leads towards extension of this work to different frequency ranges for other specific applications.
