Joule-Thomson valves for long term service in space cryocoolers

Joule-Thomson valves for small cryocoolers have throttling passages on the order of 0.1 millimeter in diameter. Consequently, they can become plugged easily and stop the operation of the cooler. Plugging can be caused by solid particles, liquids or gases. Plugging is usually caused by the freezing of contaminant gases from the process stream. In small open loop coolers and in closed loop coolers where periodic maintenance is allowed, the problem is overcome by using careful assembly techniques, pure process gases, warm filters and cold adsorbers. A more thorough approach is required for closed loop cryocoolers which must operate unattended for long periods. This paper presents the results of an effort to solve this problem. The causes of plugging are examined, and various ways to eliminate plugging are discussed. Finally, the development of a J-T defroster is explained. It is concluded that a combination of preventive measures and a defroster will reduce the chance of cooler failure by plugging to such a degree that J-T coolers can be used for long term space missions.

Microprocessor-Based Valved Controller

New controller simpler, more precise, and lighter than predecessors. Mass-flow controller compensates for changing supply pressure and temperature such as occurs when gas-supply tank becomes depleted. By periodically updating calculation of mass-flow rate, controller determines correct new position for valve and keeps mass-flow rate nearly constant.

Flow Analysis of Space Shuttle Feed Line 17-inch Disconnect Valve

A steady incompressible three-dimensional viscous flow analysis has been conducted for the Space Shuttle External Tank/Orbiter propellant feed line disconnect flapper valves with upstream elbows. The full Navier-Stokes code, INS3D, is modified to handle interior obstacles. Grids are generated by SVTGD3D code. Two dimensional initial grids in the flow cross section with and without the flappers are improved by elliptic smoothing to provide better orthogonality, clustering and smoothness to the three dimensional grid. The flow solver is tested for stability and convergence in the presence of interior flappers. An under-relaxation scheme has been incorporated to improve the solution stability. Important flow characteristics such as secondary flows, recirculation, vortex and wake regions, and separated flows are observed. Computed values for forces, moments, and pressure drop are in satisfactory agreement with water flow test data covering a maximum tube Reynolds number of 3.5 x 10(exp 6). The results will serve as a guide to improved design and enhanced testing of the disconnect.

Pressure drop and temperature rise in He II flow in round tubes, Venturi flowmeters and valves

Pressure drops in highly turbulent He II flow were measured in round tubes, valves, and Venturi flowmeters. Results are in good agreement with single-phase flow correlations for classical fluids. The temperature rise in flow in a round tube was measured, and found to agree well with predictions for isenthalpic expansion. Cavitation was observed in the venturis under conditions of low back pressure and high flow rate. Metastable superheating of the helium at the venturi throat was observed before the helium made a transition to saturation pressure.

Real time optical edge enhancement using a Hughes liquid crystal light valve

The discovery of an edge enhancement effect in using a Hughes CdS liquid crystal light valve (LCLV) is reported. An edge-enhanced version of the input writing image can be directly obtained by operating the LCLV at a lower bias frequency and bias voltage. Experimental conditions in which this edge enhancement effect can be optimized are described. Experimental results show that the SNR of the readout image using this technique is superior to that obtained using high-pass filtering. The repeatability of this effect is confirmed by obtaining an edge enhancement result using two different Hughes LCLVs. The applicability of this effect to improve discrimination capability in optical pattern recognition is addressed. The results show that the Hughes LCLV can be used in both continuous tone and edge-enhancing modes by simply adjusting its bias conditions.

Liquid-Crystal Light Valve Enhances Edges In Images

Experiments show liquid-crystal light valve (LCLV) exhibits operating mode in which it enhances edges in images projected on it. Operates in edge-enhancing mode (or in combination of edge-enhancing and normal modes) by suitably adjusting bias voltage and frequency. Enhancement of edges one of most important preprocessing steps in optical pattern-recognition systems. Incorporated into image-processing system to enhance edges without introducing excessive optical noise.

Reed Valve Regulates Welding Back-Purge Pressure

Simple modification yields welds of better quality. Reed valve halves fluctuations in pressure in back-purge chamber attached to workpiece undergoing keyhole plasma arc welding. Identical to one used in fuel system of two-cycle gasoline engine. Backbead smoother, and weld penetrates more uniformly.

Computational fluid dynamics analysis of space shuttle main propulsion feed line 17-inch disconnect valves

A steady incompressible three-dimensional (3-D) viscous flow analysis was conducted for the Space Shuttle Main Propulsion External Tank (ET)/Orbiter (ORB) propellant feed line quick separable 17-inch disconnect flapper valves for liquid oxygen (LO2) and liquid hydrogen (LH2). The main objectives of the analysis were to predict and correlate the hydrodynamic stability of the flappers and pressure drop with available water test data. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) computer codes were procured at no cost from the public domain, and were modified and extended to carry out the disconnect flow analysis. The grid generator codes SVTGD3D and INGRID were obtained. NASA Ames Research Center supplied the flow solution code INS3D, and the color graphics code PLOT3D. A driver routine was developed to automate the grid generation process. Components such as pipes, elbows, and flappers can be generated with simple commands, and flapper angles can be varied easily. The flow solver INS3D code was modified to treat interior flappers, and other interfacing routines were developed, which include a turbulence model, a force/moment routine, a time-step routine, and initial and boundary conditions. In particular, an under-relaxation scheme was implemented to enhance the solution stability. Major physical assumptions and simplifications made in the analysis include the neglect of linkages, slightly reduced flapper diameter, and smooth solid surfaces. A grid size of 54 x 21 x 25 was employed for both the LO2 and LH2 units. Mixing length theory applied to turbulent shear flow in pipes formed the basis for the simple turbulence model. Results of the analysis are presented for LO2 and LH2 disconnects.

Design of an ignition-resistant, high-pressure, high-temperature oxygen valve

A novel valve for high-pressure/high-temperature flowing oxygen, whose materials can be susceptible to ignition and combustion when particles traveling in the gas stream impact their surfaces, has been designed at NASA-White Sands with a view to ensuring ignition resistance and economy of fabrication, as well as adequate performance. The design, which is predicated on a variable segmented orifice, and follows such general design criteria as careful configuration of the gas flow path and suitable selection of ignition-resistant materials, met all design requirements under both normal and worst-case conditions.

Tangential-Entry Injector With Internal Reed Valve

Liquid-spray-injecting device provides designed pressure drop versus rate of flow to help meter flow. Includes cylinder with tangential entry slots and internal reed valve. Tangential entry imparts swirling motion to liquid, resulting in finely atomized liquid spray. Reeds vary flow areas of entry slots by deflecting in response to pressure of liquid. Variation alters pressure-versus-flow characteristic. Device used to provide wide range of throttleability for liquid fuel injected into combustion chamber or engine.

Real-time optical correlator using computer-generated holographic filter on a liquid crystal light valve

Limitations associated with the binary phase-only filter often used in optical correlators are presently circumvented in the writing of complex-valued data on a gray-scale spatial light modulator through the use of a computer-generated hologram (CGH) algorithm. The CGH encodes complex-valued data into nonnegative real CGH data in such a way that it may be encoded in any of the available gray-scale spatial light modulators. A CdS liquid-crystal light valve is used for the complex-valued CGH encoding; computer simulations and experimental results are compared, and the use of such a CGH filter as the synapse hologram in a holographic optical neural net is discussed.
