Postbiotic Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid and Camel Milk Intervention as Innovative Trends Against Hyperglycemia and Hyperlipidemia in Streptozotocin-Induced C57BL/6J Diabetic Mice

Diabetes is a serious disease that threatens human health worldwide. The study hypothesis is to investigate the novel trends that may aid in the prevention of diabetic complications. Camel milk was presented as traditional functional food, and Lactobacillus brevis KLDS 1.0727 and KLDS 1.0373 strains were shown to synthesize postbiotic Gamma-aminobutyric acid as a potential food additive, which can therapeutically intervene against hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia in streptozotocin-induced C 57 BL/6J mice. During a four-week timeframe, body weight and postprandial blood glucose levels were monitored. Post-euthanasia, blood plasma was obtained to investigate hyperlipidemia, insulin concentrations, liver, and renal functions. The liver, pancreas, kidney, and spleen underwent histopathological examinations. The results demonstrated that KLDS 1.0727 and KLDS 1.0373 ( LAC S1 , LAC S2 ) and camel milk treatments all had a significant influence on hypoglycemic activity, as evidenced by reduced postprandial blood glucose levels. LAC S1 , LAC S2 , and camel milk therapy significantly reduced blood hypolipidemic, and some liver enzymes such as (alanine aminotransferase and aspartate transaminase) levels. Therefore, we recommend consuming camel milk regularly and expanding its use with fermented foods containing L. brevis , one of the probiotics capable of producing gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) as future food additives that can improve human health and reduce the prevalence of several diseases disorders.

Seasonal variations in fire conditions are important drivers in the trend of aerosol optical properties over the south-eastern Atlantic

Abstract. From June to October, southern Africa produces one-third of the global biomass burning (BB) emissions by widespread fires. BB aerosols are transported westward over the south-eastern Atlantic with the mid-tropospheric winds, resulting in significant radiative effects. Ascension Island (ASI) is located midway between Africa and South America. From June 2016 to October 2017, a 17-month in situ observation campaign on ASI found a low single-scattering albedo (SSA) as well as a high mass absorption cross-section of black carbon (MACBC), demonstrating the strong absorbing marine boundary layer in the south-eastern Atlantic. Here we investigate the monthly variations of critical optical properties of BB aerosols, i.e. SSA and MACBC, during the BB seasons and the driving factors behind these variations. Both SSA and MACBC increase from June to August and decrease in September and October. The average SSA during the BB seasons is 0.81 at 529 nm wavelength, with the highest mean ∼ 0.85 in October and the lowest ∼ 0.78 in August. The absorption enhancement (Eabs) derived from the MACBC shows similar trends with SSA, with the average during the whole of the BB seasons at ∼ 1.96 and ∼ 2.07 in 2016 and 2017, respectively. As the Eabs is higher than the ∼ 1.5 commonly adopted value by climate models, this result suggests the marine boundary layer in the south-eastern Atlantic is more absorbing than model simulations. We find the enhanced ratio of BC to CO (ΔBC/ΔCO, equal to BC/ΔCO as the BC background concentration is considered to be 0) is well correlated with SSA and MACBC, providing a simple way to estimate the aerosol optical characteristics in the south-eastern Atlantic. The exponential function we proposed can approximate SSA and MACBC with BC/ΔCO, and when BC/ΔCO is small it can capture the rapid growth of SSA as BC/ΔCO decreases. BC/ΔCO is influenced by combustion conditions and aerosol scavenging. From the analysis of the location of BB, the primary source fuel, the water content in the fuel, combined with the mean cloud cover and precipitation in the transport areas of the BB plume, we conclude that the increase in BC/ΔCO from June to August is likely to be caused by burning becoming more flaming. The reduction in the water content of fuels may be responsible for the change in the burning conditions from June to August. The decrease in BC/ΔCO in September and October may be caused by two factors, one being a lower proportion of flaming conditions, possibly associated with a decrease in mean surface wind speed in the burning area, and the other being an increase in precipitation in the BB transport pathway, leading to enhanced aerosol scavenging, which ultimately results in an increase in SSA and MACBC.

Trends in high-speed atmospheric flight

Some of the current problems and future trends for three types of flight within the Earth's atmosphere are considered. The three areas examined are atmosphere entry at very high speeds, atmosphere exit of launch vehicles, and sustained cruise within the atmosphere. The high-speed entry problems described are those encountered by vehicles returning to Earth after a manned mission to Mars. Such vehicles will experience atmosphere entry speeds up to 50,000 and perhaps as high as 70,000 feet per second. For these vehicles to execute a successful entry, accurate guidance at Earth approach must be provided and very precise control during the flight within the atmosphere will be a necessity. At the high entry speeds radiative heating-is greater than convective and thus it tends to exert a dominant influence on entry-vehicle configuration. The study and development of relatively slender vehicles is indicated in order to minimize the large radiative heating loads and associated heat-shield weights. Manned interplanetary missions in the future may also involve a need for very large launch vehicles. These large vehicles will have aerodynamic problems which differ somewhat from current problems. For example, drag losses decrease with increasing size and large vehicles may thus be of lower fineness ratio than present-day vehicles. With lower fineness ratio some of the difficult current problems produced by ground-wind loads and by buffet of hammerhead payload mountings will be avoided. In the case of high-speed cruise within the Earth's atmosphere, the use of hydrogen-fueled, airbreathing engines may permit attractive payload capabilities for long-range high-speed transports. For such vehicles aerodynamic problems arise because of the numerous constraints placed upon their flight paths as well as from the large volumes required for the hydrogen fuel. From payload considerations alone, attractive cruise speeds for such vehicles currently appear to be about twice that of the conventionally fueled supersonic transports now being intensively studied.
