Development of welded metal bellows having minimum effective diameter change

A program of analysis, design, and fabrication was conducted to develop welded metal bellows having a minimum change in effective diameter for cryogenic turbomachinery face seal applications. Linear analysis of the principle types of bellows provided identification of concepts capable of meeting basic operation requirements. For the 6-inch (.152 m) mean diameter, 1.5-inch free length bellows studied, nonlinear analysis showed that opposed and nested toroidal bellows plates stiffened by means of alternating stiffener rings were capable of maintaining constant effective diameter within 0.3% and 0.1% respectively under the operating conditions of interest. Changes in effective diameter were due principally to bellows axial deflection with pressure differential having a lesser influence. Fabrication problems associated with joining the thin bellows plates to the relatively heavy stiffener rings were encountered and precluded assembly and testing of a bellows core. Fabrication problems are summarized and recommended fabrication methods for future effort are presented.

Atmospheric constituent measurements using commercial 747 airliners

NASA is implementing a Global Atmospheric Monitoring Program to measure the temporal and spatial distribution of particulate and gaseous constituents related to aircraft engine emissions in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (6 to 12 Km). Several 747 aircraft operated by different airlines flying routes selected for maximum world coverage will be instrumented. An instrumentation system is being assembled and tested and is scheduled for operation in airline service in late 1974. Specialized instrumentation and an electronic control unit are required for automatic unattended operation on commercial airliners. An ambient air sampling system was developed to provide undisturbed outside air to the instruments in the pressurized aircraft cabin.

The initial design of the system (location of equipment, aircraft interfaces, etc.) was conceptually defined in feasibility studies conducted by several airlines and an airframe company. An instrumentation system is now being assembled and tested and is scheduled for operation in airline service in late 1974. An ambient air sampling system was developed to provide undisturbed outside air to the instruments in the pressurized aircraft cabin.

Modular liquid-cooled helmet liner for thermal comfort

A modular liquid-cooled helmet liner made of eight form-fitting neoprene patches was constructed. The liner was integrated into the sweatband of an Army SPH-4 helicopter aircrew helmet. This assembly was tested on four subjects seated in a hot (47 C), humid (40%) environment. Results indicate a marked reduction in the rate of increase of physiological body functions. Rectal temperature, weight loss, heart rate, and strain indices are all reduced to approximately 50% of uncooled levels. The cooling liner removed from 10% to 30% of total metabolic heat produced. This study also demonstrated the technical feasilibity of using a cooling liner in conjunction with a standard hard helmet. Potential applications of the cooling liner in thermally stressful environments are numerous, notably for helicopter and other aircrews.

SEASAT study documentation

The proposed spacecraft consists of a bus module, containing all subsystems required for support of the sensors, and a payload module containing all of the sensor equipment. The two modules are bolted together to form the spacecraft, and electrical interfaces are accomplished via mated connectors at the interface plane. This approach permits independent parallel assembly and test operations on each module up until mating for final spacecraft integration and test operations. Proposed program schedules recognize the need to refine sensor/spacecraft interfaces prior to proceeding with procurement, reflect the lead times estimated by suppliers for delivery of equipment, reflect a comprehensive test program, and provide flexibility for unanticipated problems. The spacecraft systems are described in detail along with aerospace ground equipment, ground handling equipment, the launch vehicle, imaging radar incorporation, and systems tests.

Carbon dioxide sensor

Analytical techniques for measuring CO2 were evaluated and rated for use with the advanced extravehicular mobility unit. An infrared absorption concept using a dual-wavelength monochromator was selected for investigation. A breadboard carbon dioxide sensor (CDS) was assembled and tested. The CDS performance showed the capability of measuring CO2 over the range of 0 to 4.0 kPa (0 to 30 mmHg) P sub (CO2). The volume and weight of a flight configured CDS should be acceptable. It is recommended that development continue to complete the design of a flight prototype.
