Choosing Your Poison: Optimizing Simulator Visual System Selection as a Function of Operational Tasks

Although current technology simulator visual systems can achieve extremely realistic levels they do not completely replicate the experience of a pilot sitting in the cockpit, looking at the outside world. Some differences in experience are due to visual artifacts, or perceptual features that would not be present in a naturally viewed scene. Others are due to features that are missing from the simulated scene. In this paper, these differences will be defined and discussed. The significance of these differences will be examined as a function of several particular operational tasks. A framework to facilitate the choice of visual system characteristics based on operational task requirements will be proposed.

Optimizing Thermal Management Systems in Electric Aircraft

The development of electric aircraft poses significant gains for the environment; however, the integration of high-power systems increases the number of heat sources that need to be managed in-flight. This 30-minute session discusses the importance of robust thermal management systems and reviews new design concepts to improve overall aircraft efficiency.

Design of aircraft wings subjected to gust loads - A system reliability approach

A method for system reliability-based design of aircraft wing structures is presented. A wing of a light commuter aircraft designed for gust loads according to the FAA regulations is compared with one designed by system reliability optimization. It is shown that system reliability optimization has the potential of improving dramatically the safety and efficiency of new designs. The reasons for the differences between the deterministic and reliability-based designs are explained.

Cooling Panel Optimization for the Active Cooling System of a Hypersonic Aircraft

Optimization of cooling panels for an active cooling system of a hypersonic aircraft is explored. The flow passages are of rectangular cross section with one wall heated. An analytical fin-type model for incompressible flow in smooth-wall rectangular ducts with coupled wall conduction is proposed. Based on this model, the a flow rate of coolant to each design minimum mass flow rate or coolant for a single cooling panel is obtained by satisfying hydrodynamic, thermal, and Mach number constraints. Also, the sensitivity of the optimal mass flow rate of coolant to each design variable is investigated. In addition, numerical solutions for constant property flow in rectangular ducts, with one side rib-roughened and coupled wall conduction, are obtained using a k-epsilon and wall function turbulence model, these results are compared with predictions of the analytical model.

Optimization of active control systems to suppress flutter and minimize turbulence response

A method for optimizing an active control system which will suppress flutter and minimize the response of a lifting surface to atmospheric turbulence is presented. A mathematical search method is developed which will find a control law which will cause an active control system to flutter at a specified freestream velocity, air density, and Mach number. With the flutter velocity of the system held constant, the control law is then modified in such a way that the peak output power spectral density function of the angular response of a lifting surface (as a result of atmospheric turbulence) is minimized for a specified flight velocity which is less than the flutter velocity. The von Karman generalized power spectrum for the transverse components of turbulence is used in an example problem to increase the flutter velocity and minimize the turbulence response of a simplified delta-wing model which has leading and trailing edge control surfaces.

Unified Optimization Of A Structure And Its Control System

Method for unified optimization of structure and its vibration-suppressing control system involves extension of established techniques of optimization via approach based on homotopy, in which cost function used as criterion for optimization of control system coupled to corresponding cost function of structure via new parameter. Applicable to such terrestrial problems as designing buildings with control actuators to prevent damage by earthquakes.

An approximate method for the synthesis of optimal control of distributed systems.

An approximate method is presented for the synthesis of an optimal control of distributed parameter systems, based on a combination of the ideas of Lyapunov's direct method and those of Bellman's successive approximation in policy space. The method is such that the approximate equation is improved after each iteration in the sense of the performance index being used.

Energy management analysis of lunar oxygen production

Energy load models in the process of hydrogen reduction of ilmenite for lunar oxygen production are being developed. The load models will be used as a first step to ultimately determine the optimal energy system needed to supply the power requirements for the process. The goal is to determine the energy requirements in the process of hydrogen reduction of ilmenite to produce oxygen. The general approach is shown, and the objectives are to determine the energy loads of the processes in the system. Subsequent energy management studies will be made to minimize the system losses (irreversibilities) and to design optimal energy system power requirements. A number of processes are being proposed as possible candidates for lunar application and some detailed experimental efforts are being conducted within this project at the University of Arizona. Priorities are directed toward developing the energy models for each of the proposed processes being considered. The immediate goals are to identify the variables that would impact energy requirements and energy sources of supply.

Analytical and Computational Aspects of Collaborative Optimization

Bilevel problem formulations have received considerable attention as an approach to multidisciplinary optimization in engineering. We examine the analytical and computational properties of one such approach, collaborative optimization. The resulting system-level optimization problems suffer from inherent computational difficulties due to the bilevel nature of the method. Most notably, it is impossible to characterize and hence identify solutions of the system-level problems because the standard first-order conditions for solutions of constrained optimization problems do not hold. The analytical features of the system-level problem make it difficult to apply conventional nonlinear programming algorithms. Simple examples illustrate the analysis and the algorithmic consequences for optimization methods. We conclude with additional observations on the practical implications of the analytical and computational properties of collaborative optimization.
