Probing jet base emission of M87* with the 2021 Event Horizon Telescope observations

We investigate the presence and spatial characteristics of the jet base emission in M87* at 230 GHz, enabled by the significantly enhanced (u,v) coverage in the 2021 Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) observations. The integration of the 12−m Kitt Peak Telescope (USA) and NOEMA (France) stations into the array introduces two critical intermediate-length baselines to SMT (USA) and IRAM 30−m (Spain), providing sensitivity to emission structures at spatial scales of ∼250 μas and ∼2500 μas (∼ 0.02 pc and ∼ 0.02 pc). Without these new baselines, previous EHT observations of the source in 2017 and 2018 lacked the capability to constrain emission on large scales, where a “missing flux” of order ∼1 Jy is expected to reside. To probe these scales, we analyzed closure phases–robust against station-based gain calibration errors–and model the jet base emission using a simple Gaussian component offset from the compact ring emission at spatial separations > 100 μas. Our analysis revealed a Gaussian feature centered at (ΔRA ≈ 320 μ as, ΔDec. ≈ 60 μ as), projected separation of ≈ 5500 AU, with an estimated flux density of only ∼60 mJy, implying that most of the missing flux identified in previous EHT studies had to originate from different, larger scales. Brighter emission at the relevant spatial scales is firmly ruled out, and the data do not favor more complex models. This component aligns with the inferred position of the large-scale jet and is therefore physically consistent with the emission of the jet base. While our findings point to detectable jet base emission at 230 GHz, the limited coverage provided by only two intermediate baselines limits our ability to robustly reconstruct its morphology. Consequently, we treated the recovered Gaussian as an upper limit on the jet base flux density. Future EHT observations with expanded intermediate baseline coverage will be essential to constrain the structure and nature of this component with higher precision.

Machine learning prediction of glass transition temperature of conjugated polymers from chemical structure

Predicting the glass transition temperature (T g ) is of critical importance as it governs the thermomechanical performance of conjugated polymers (CPs). Here, we report a predictive modeling framework to predict T g of CPs through the integration of machine learning (ML), molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, and experiments. With 154 T g data collected, an ML model is developed by taking simplified “geometry” of six chemical building blocks as molecular features, where side-chain fraction, isolated rings, fused rings, and bridged rings features are identified as the dominant ones for T g . MD simulations further unravel the fundamental roles of those chemical building blocks in dynamical heterogeneity and local mobility of CPs at a molecular level. The developed ML model is demonstrated for its capability of predicting T g of several new high-performance solar cell materials to a good approximation. The established predictive framework facilitates the design and prediction of T g of complex CPs, paving the way for addressing device stability issues that have hampered the field from developing stable organic electronics.

Carbon fiber synthesis from pitch: Insights from ReaxFF based molecular dynamics simulations

Despite the potential to lowering fabrication costs of pitch-based carbon fiber (CF) compared to polyacrylonitrile-based CF, large scale utilization is currently limited by the complexity in manufacturing. This is mainly due to the lack of consistency between the pitch structure/chemistry and CF properties under different processing conditions. Here, we employed full atomistic simulations based on reactive force fields to investigate the conversion of pitch precursors to CFs. Additionally, it was found that at the carbonization stage, the consumption rates of precursors, gas formations, and solid yields (carbonized CFs) are all dependent on the composition and arrangement of molecular moieties in the precursor. Specifically, precursors with sp 3 carbons in the cata-condensed core area have limited decomposition pathways (i.e., limited reaction sites), which leads to the formation of carbonized CFs with similar compositions. Furthermore, carbonized CFs possess distinct structural characteristics, and finally lead to the formation of CFs with different moduli. By analyzing CF crystallinity and elemental composition, general rationales are proposed for the selection of optimal precursors and processing conditions, and thus shed lights on parameter screening during industrial CF synthesis. For instance, inclusion of sp 3 carbons in cata- condensed rings can be preferred over the presence of sp 3 carbons on side chains.

Stabilization of N6 and N8 anionic units and 2D polynitrogen layers in high-pressure scandium polynitrides

Abstract Nitrogen catenation under high pressure leads to the formation of polynitrogen compounds with potentially unique properties. The exploration of the entire spectrum of poly- and oligo-nitrogen moieties is still in its earliest stages. Here, we report on four novel scandium nitrides, Sc 2 N 6 , Sc 2 N 8 , ScN 5, and Sc 4 N 3 , synthesized by direct reaction between yttrium and nitrogen at 78-125 GPa and 2500 K in laser-heated diamond anvil cells. High-pressure synchrotron single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that in the crystal structures of the nitrogen-rich Sc 2 N 6 , Sc 2 N 8, and ScN 5 phases nitrogen is catenated forming previously unknown N 6 6 − and N 8 6 − units and$${\!\,}_{\infty }{\!\,}^{2}({{{{{\rm{N}}}}}}_{5}^{3-})$$ ∞ 2 ( N 5 3 − ) anionic corrugated 2D-polynitrogen layers consisting of fused N 12 rings. Density functional theory calculations, confirming the dynamical stability of the synthesized compounds, show that Sc 2 N 6 and Sc 2 N 8 possess an anion-driven metallicity, while ScN 5 is an indirect semiconductor. Sc 2 N 6 , Sc 2 N 8 , and ScN 5 solids are promising high-energy-density materials with calculated volumetric energy density, detonation velocity, and detonation pressure higher than those of TNT.

Anti-fungal bioactive terpenoids in the bioenergy crop switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) may contribute to ecotype-specific microbiome composition

Abstract Plant derived bioactive small molecules have attracted attention of scientists across fundamental and applied scientific disciplines. We seek to understand the influence of these phytochemicals on rhizosphere and root-associated fungi. We hypothesize that – consistent with accumulating evidence that switchgrass genotype impacts microbiome assembly – differential terpenoid accumulation contributes to switchgrass ecotype-specific microbiome composition. An initial in vitro Petri plate-based disc diffusion screen of 18 switchgrass root derived fungal isolates revealed differential responses to upland- and lowland-isolated metabolites. To identify specific fungal growth-modulating metabolites, we tested fractions from root extracts on three ecologically important fungal isolates – Linnemania elongata, Trichoderma sp. and Fusarium sp. Saponins and diterpenoids were identified as the most prominent antifungal metabolites. Finally, analysis of liquid chromatography-purified terpenoids revealed fungal inhibition structure – activity relationships (SAR). Saponin antifungal activity was primarily determined by the number of sugar moieties – saponins glycosylated at a single core position were inhibitory whereas saponins glycosylated at two core positions were inactive. Saponin core hydroxylation and acetylation were also associated with reduced activity. Diterpenoid activity required the presence of an intact furan ring for strong fungal growth inhibition. These results inform future breeding and biotechnology strategies for crop protection with reduced pesticide application.

Catalytic Dynamic Kinetic Resolutions in Tandem to Construct Two-Axis Terphenyl Atropisomers

The defined structure of molecules bearing multiple stereogenic axes is of increasing relevance to materials science, pharmaceuticals, and catalysis. However, catalytic enantioselective approaches to control multiple stereogenic axes remain synthetically challenging. Here, we report the catalytic synthesis of two-axis terphenyl atropisomers, with complementary strategies to both chlorinated and brominated variants, formed with high diastereo- and enantioselectivity. The chemistry proceeds through a sequence of two distinct dynamic kinetic resolutions: first, an atroposelective ring opening of Bringmann-type lactones produces a product with one established axis of chirality, and second, a stereoselective arene halogenation delivers the product with the second axis of chirality established. In order to achieve these results, a class of Brønsted basic guanidinylated peptides, which catalyze an efficient atroposelective chlorination, is reported for the first time. In addition, a complementary bromination is reported, which also establishes the second stereogenic axis. These bromo-terphenyls are accessible following the discovery that chiral anion phase transfer catalysis by C 2 -symmetric phosphoric acids allows catalyst control in the second stereochemistry-determining event. Accordingly, we established the fully catalyst-controlled stereodivergent synthesis of all possible chlorinated stereoisomers while also demonstrating diastereodivergence in the brominated variants, with significant levels of enantioselectivity in all cases.

Photophysical properties of three-coordinate heteroleptic Cu( I ) β-diketiminate triarylphosphine complexes

A series of heteroleptic copper(I) β-diketiminate triarylphosphine complexes is reported, having the general formula Cu(R 1 NacNac R2 )(PPh X 3 ), where R 1 NacNac R2 is a substituted β-diketiminate and PPh X 3 is a triphenylphosphine derivative. A total of five different R 1 NacNac R2 ligands and three different triarylphosphines are used to assemble the nine complexes. Here, the syntheses, X-ray crystal structures, cyclic voltammograms, and UV–vis absorption spectra of all compounds are described. Whereas most of the compounds are weakly luminescent or only luminesce at 77 K, the four complexes with the more sterically encumbered β-diketiminate ligands, with methyl or isopropyl substituents at the 2- and 6-positions of the N-phenyl rings, exhibit weak room-temperature photoluminescence with peaks between 519 and 566 nm and long excited-state lifetimes in the range of 15–70 μs. The sterically encumbering substituents in this subset have subtle effects on the UV–vis absorption maximum, which red shifts slightly as the steric bulk increases, as well as significant effects on the photoluminescence lifetime, which is observed to increase as the steric bulk is augmented. Substituents on the triarylphosphine also influence the excited-state dynamics in the bulky complexes, with the more electron-rich tris(4-methoxyphenyl)phosphine (PPh OMe 3 ) giving longer-excited-state lifetimes compared to triphenylphosphine (PPh 3 ) when the same R 1 NacNac R2 ligand is used.

Three-dimensional checkerboard spin structure on a breathing pyrochlore lattice

The standard approach to realize a spin-liquid state is through magnetically frustrated states, relying on ingredients such as the lattice geometry, dimensionality, and magnetic interaction type of the spins. While Heisenberg spins on a pyrochlore lattice with only antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor interactions are theoretically proven disordered, spins in real systems generally include longer-range interactions. The spatial correlations at longer distances typically stabilize a long-range order rather than enhancing a spin-liquid state. Both states can, however, be destroyed by short-range static correlations introduced by chemical disorder. Here, using disorder-free specimens with a clear long-range antiferromagnetic order, we refine the spin structure of the Heisenberg spinel ZnFe 2 O 4 through neutron magnetic diffraction. The unique wave vector (1, 0, $\frac{1}{2}$) leads to a spin structure that can be viewed as alternatively stacked ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic tetrahedra in a three-dimensional checkerboard form. Stable coexistence of these opposing types of clusters is enabled by the bipartite breathing pyrochlore crystal structure, leading to a second-order phase transition at 10 K. The diffraction intensity of ZnFe 2 O 4 is an exact complement to the inelastic scattering intensity of several chromate spinel systems which are regarded as model classical spin liquids. Our results challenge this attribution, and suggest instead of the six-spin ring mode, spin excitations in chromate spinels are closely related to the (1, 0, $\frac{1}{2}$) type of spin order and the four-spin ferromagnetic cluster locally at one tetrahedron.

Simulating Isotropic Rayleigh Wave Horizontal to Vertical Ratios at Rock Valley

Elastic anisotropy in the subsurface can manifest from pre-existing structure or stress-induced cracking – both phenomena are of interest at the Rock Valley site in Nevada. The azimuthal dependence of Rayleigh wave ellipticity, also known as H/V, can reveal elastic anisotropy, but the effect of isotropic variability in H/V must first be accounted for. To that end, we simulate synthetic seismograms from a ring of sources in a fully 3-D isotropic velocity model that captures the geology at Rock Valley. We measure H/V from these waveforms and compare them with H/V predictions obtained using 1D models extracted at specific locations from the 3D model. We find that an average of the azimuthal H/V measurements from the 3-D simulations and 1-D predictions agree, but that the azimuthal variability of H/V is a large fraction of the mean value. These results estimate the noise character in azimuthal H/V so it can be factored out of future anisotropic simulations.

H 2 BZmacropa-NCS: A Bifunctional Chelator for Actinium-225 Targeted Alpha Therapy

Actinium-225 ( 225 Ac) is one of the most promising radionuclides for targeted alpha therapy (TAT). With a half-life of 9.92 days and a decay chain that emits four high-energy α particles, 225 Ac is well-suited for TAT when conjugated to macromolecular targeting vectors that exhibit extended in vivo circulation times. The implementation of 225 Ac in these targeted constructs, however, requires a suitable chelator that can bind and retain this radionuclide in vivo. Previous work has demonstrated the suitability of a diaza-18-crown-6 macrocyclic chelator H 2 macropa for this application. Building upon these prior efforts, in this study, two rigid variants of H 2 macropa, which contain either one (H 2 BZmacropa) or two (H 2 BZ 2 macropa) benzene rings within the macrocyclic core, were synthesized and investigated for their potential use for 225 Ac TAT. The coordination chemistry of these ligands with La 3+ , used as a nonradioactive model for Ac 3+ , was carried out. Both NMR spectroscopic and X-ray crystallographic studies of the La 3+ complexes of these ligands revealed similar structural features to those found for the related complex of H 2 macropa. Thermodynamic stability constants of the La 3+ complexes, however, were found to be 1 and 2 orders of magnitude lower than those of H 2 macropa for H 2 BZmacropa and H 2 BZ 2 macropa, respectively. The decrease in thermodynamic stability was rationalized via the use of density functional theory calculations. 225 Ac radiolabeling and serum stability studies with H 2 BZmacropa showed that this chelator compares favorably with H 2 macropa. Based on these promising results, a bifunctional version of this chelator, H 2 BZmacropa-NCS, was synthesized and conjugated to the antibody codrituzumab (GC33), which targets the liver cancer biomarker glypican-3 (GPC3). The resulting GC33-BZmacropa conjugate and an analogous GC33-macropa conjugate were evaluated for their 225 Ac radiolabeling efficiencies, antigen-binding affinities, and in vivo biodistribution in HepG2 liver cancer tumor-bearing mice. Although both conjugates were comparably effective in their radiolabeling efficiencies, [ 225 Ac]Ac-GC33-BZmacropa showed slightly poorer serum stability and biodistribution than [ 225 Ac]Ac-GC33-macropa. Altogether, these results establish H2BZmacropa-NCS as a new bifunctional chelator for the preparation of 225 Ac radiopharmaceuticals.

Investigating the ultraviolet photodissociation of bromocyclopropane with ultrafast electron diffraction

We have studied the photodissociation of gas-phase bromocyclopropane by 200 nm wavelength ultraviolet radiation using ultrafast electron diffraction. Bromocyclopropane is a prototypical molecule in the study of organobromides, a class of molecules that have a significant impact on atmospheric ozone depletion through their photochemistry. Here, previous studies have revealed two possible reaction pathways for the photodissociation of bromine from bromocyclopropane; either the C–Br bond dissociates, leaving behind a cyclopropyl ring, or there is a concerted opening of the cyclopropyl ring along with the C–Br bond dissociation. In this work, both our experimental and simulation results indicate that the majority of the UV-photoexcited BCP molecules (88% ± 11% in the experiment) follow the first reaction pathway, in which the cyclopropyl ring remains closed after homolytic C–Br bond cleavage. This direct bond dissociation occurs within the experimental time resolution of 270 fs. In order to differentiate between the possible reaction end-products, both of which have diffraction signals dominated by the bromine atom, a new analysis method has been employed, which is more sensitive to the structure of the end-products.

Transverse Single Spin Asymmetries of Heavy Flavor Electrons and Charged Pions in 200 GeV $p+p^{\uparrow}$ Collisions at Midrapidity

Transverse single spin asymmetries of particles produced in p+p^{\uparrow} p + p ↑ collisions provide insight on the partonic spin and momentum structure of hadrons; heavy flavor electrons provide access to initial state spin-momentum correlations of gluons in the proton, while charged pions provide access to initial and final state transverse spin effects. Charged particles are measured at midrapidity at PHENIX using the silicon vertex detector and central arm spectrometer, made of an electromagnetic calorimeter, a ring-imaging Cherenkov detector, and drift and pad chambers. Recent results for both electron and charged pion measurements from the 2015 running period will be presented.

Evidence of the Involvement of a Cyclase Gene in the Biosynthesis of Ochratoxin A in Aspergillus carbonarius

Ochratoxin A (OTA) is a well-known mycotoxin with wide distribution in food and feed. Fungal genome sequencing has great utility for identifying secondary metabolites gene clusters for known and novel compounds. A comparative analysis of the OTA-biosynthetic cluster in A. steynii, A. westerdijkiae, A. niger, A. carbonarius, and P. nordicum has revealed a high synteny in OTA cluster organization in five structural genes (otaA, otaB, ota, otaR1, and otaD). Moreover, a recent detailed comparative genome analysis of Aspergilli OTA producers led to the identification of a cyclase gene, otaY, located in the OTA cluster between the otaA and otaB genes, encoding for a predicted protein with high similarity to SnoaLs domain. These proteins have been shown to catalyze ring closure steps in the biosynthesis of polyketide antibiotics produced in Streptomyces. In the present study, we demonstrated an upregulation of the cyclase gene in A. carbonarius under OTA permissive conditions, consistent with the expression trends of the other OTA cluster genes and their role in OTA biosynthesis by complete gene deletion. Our results pointed out the involvement of a cyclase gene in OTA biosynthetic pathway for the first time. They represent a step forward in the understanding of the molecular basis of OTA biosynthesis in A. carbonarius.

Chain-End Controlled Depolymerization Selectivity in α,α-Disubstituted Propionate PHAs with Dual Closed-Loop Recycling and Record-High Melting Temperature

In this article, within the large poly(3-hydroxyalkanoate) (PHA) family, C3 propionates are much less studied than C4 butyrates, with the exception of α,α-disubstituted propionate PHAs, particularly poly(3-hydroxy-2,2-dimethylpropionate), P3H(Me) 2 P, due to its high melting temperature (T m ~ 230 °C) and crystallinity (~76%). However, inefficient synthetic routes to its monomer 2,2-dimethylpropiolactone [(Me) 2 PL] and extreme brittleness of P3H(Me) 2 P largely hinder its broad applications. Here, we introduce simple, efficient step-growth polycondensation (SGP) of a hydroxyacid or methyl ester to afford P3H(Me) 2 P with low to medium molar mass, which is then utilized to produce lactones through base-catalyzed depolymerization. The ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of the 4-membered lactone leads to high-molar-mass P3H(Me) 2 P, which can be depolymerized by hydrolysis to the hydroxyacid in 99% yield or methanolysis to the hydroxyester in 91% yield, achieving closed-loop recycling via both SGP and ROP routes. Intriguingly, the chain end of the SGP-P3H(Me) 2 P determines the depolymerization selectivity toward 4- or 12-membered lactone formation, while both can be repolymerized back to P3H(Me) 2 P. Through the formation of copolymers P3H(Me/R) 2 P (R = Et, n Pr), PHAs with high tensile strength and ductility, coupled with high barriers to water vapor and oxygen, have been created. Notably, the PHA structure–property study led to P3H( n Pr) 2 P with a record-high T m of 266 °C within the PHA family.

Novel Hydrogen Clathrate Hydrate

We report a new hydrogen clathrate hydrate synthesized at 1.2 GPa and 298 K documented by single-crystal x-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and first-principles calculations. The oxygen sublattice of the new clathrate hydrate matches that of ice II, while hydrogen molecules are in the ring cavities, which results in the trigonal R3c or R¯3c space group (proton ordered or disordered, respectively) and the composition of ( H 2 O) 6 H 2 . Raman spectroscopy and theoretical calculations reveal a hydrogen disordered nature of the new phase $C$$^{'}_{1}$, distinct from the well-known ordered C 1 clathrate, to which this new structure transforms upon compression and/or cooling. Furthermore, this new clathrate phase can be viewed as a realization of a disordered ice II, unobserved before, in contrast to all other ordered ice structures.

Supplemental Structural Analyses Used in Support of Certification of the Defense Programs Package 3

The Defense Programs Package (DPP)-3 is to be certified by the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Packaging and Transportation Division (PTD). Certification is based on successful physical testing of the package, and six certification test units (CTUs) have been subjected to the normal conditions of transport (NCT) and hypothetical accident conditions (HAC) outlined in Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations Part 71 (10 CFR 71). During regulatory testing of one of the CTUs, the drum lid closure bolt closest to the impact surface failed during the HAC 30-ft side drop. One of the testing goals for this CTU was to minimize the thermal pathway from the drum exterior shell to the containment vessel (CV) flange and O-rings, leading to the maximum damage scenario in preparation for thermal testing at 1475 °F. Therefore, the puncture bar impact proceeded as originally planned by striking the side wall of the package exterior closest to the location of the CV flange. This puncture bar impact did not attempt to exploit the region of the failed drum lid closure bolt to potentially cause more damage to the package. After the conclusion of regulatory testing, the DPP-3 package finite element model was used to numerically evaluate the effects of puncture bar impacts to the drum exterior in the vicinity of the failed drum lid closure bolt to further demonstrate the robustness of the DPP-3 design. Three alternate puncture bar impact locations and orientations were evaluated to demonstrate that these puncture bar impacts would not substantially reduce the effectiveness of the DPP-3 packaging. This paper describes the supplemental finite element models performed and structural analysis results that demonstrate the alternate HAC 40-in. puncture bar impact tests would have no deleterious effect on the performance of the DPP-3.

Predicting the structural basis of targeted protein degradation by integrating molecular dynamics simulations with structural mass spectrometry

Targeted protein degradation (TPD) is a promising approach in drug discovery for degrading proteins implicated in diseases. A key step in this process is the formation of a ternary complex where a heterobifunctional molecule induces proximity of an E3 ligase to a protein of interest (POI), thus facilitating ubiquitin transfer to the POI. In this work, we characterize 3 steps in the TPD process. (1) We simulate the ternary complex formation of SMARCA2 bromodomain and VHL E3 ligase by combining hydrogen-deuterium exchange mass spectrometry with weighted ensemble molecular dynamics (MD). (2) We characterize the conformational heterogeneity of the ternary complex using Hamiltonian replica exchange simulations and small-angle X-ray scattering. (3) We assess the ubiquitination of the POI in the context of the full Cullin-RING Ligase, confirming experimental ubiquitinomics results. Differences in degradation efficiency can be explained by the proximity of lysine residues on the POI relative to ubiquitin.

Thermal loading analysis of the ring injection dump for the Spallation Neutron Source facility

The ring injection dump (RID) is the largest beam dump in the Spallation Neutron Source facility at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and accepts a fraction of the beam from the ring that is not captured in the ring during injection. Thermo-fluid modeling of the RID components was performed during the initial design by using the software ANSYS CFX to characterize the power rating for the RID. From the calculations, the power rating was lowered from 200 kW to 150 kW, at 1.3 GeV beam energy due to concerns regarding the heating of the concrete structure. The Proton Power Upgrade project scope included reevaluating the power limit to the RID in anticipation that increasing it would provide more operational flexibility. The focus was on the shielding because it was the limiting factor, and data collected from thermocouples installed on the structure were used to benchmark the analysis. A three-stage process was adopted in the latest study. First, the already existing steady-state calculations were validated and extended with the latest Monte Carlo N-Particle source term calculations. Second, transient calculations were conducted to capture the dynamic state of the system in response to the energy dumped to the RID during the following operational period of the beam from 2005–2019 (14 years), and sensitivity analyses of crucial parameters were performed to benchmark the model with reasonable accuracy. Finally, an idealized transient cycle analysis was conducted with realistic duty factors to predict the temperature distribution at higher beam powers. Overall, the results confirmed the accuracy of the original steady state model but allowed the development of a new validated transient model with higher accuracy for future analyses.
