Shortwave Spectrometer (SWS) zenith radiance swsrad.b1 v3 and higher

Hyperspectral zenith radiances from the SWS instrument reported at 1 Hz. This data stream contains calibrated, dark-subtracted, radiances from two grating array spectrometers: a Si-detector based spectrometer denoted by SW and an InGaAs based detector denoted by LW. Spectra from both spectrometers are calibrated based on the spectral responsivity determined by reference against NIST-traceable light sources are reported independently as separate arrays having the same time record but wavelength dimension specified for each detector. Because the LW spectrometer is more susceptible to temperature-induced changes, a scale factor adjustment is applied the the LW spectra to yield agreement with the SW spectra over the wavelength range where they overlap. The final radiances incorporate QC to flag saturated values, periods where house-keeping fields fall outside acceptable bounds, and to flag pixels for which the spectral responsivity is not acceptable.

PCM synchronization by word stuffing

When a transmitted word, consisting of a number of pulses, is detected and removed from the data stream, the space left by the removal is eliminated by a memory buffer. This eliminates the need for a clock synchronizer thereby removing instability problems.

Tracking and data system support for the Mariner Mars 1971 mission. Prelaunch phase through first trajectory correction maneuver, volume 1

The DSN command system provided the capability to enter commands in a computer at the deep space stations for transmission to the spacecraft. The high-rate telemetry system operated at 16,200 bits/sec. This system will permit return to DSS 14 of full-resolution television pictures from the spacecraft tape recorder, plus the other science experiment data, during the two playback periods of each Goldstone pass planned for each corresponding orbit. Other features included 4800 bits/sec modem high-speed data lines from all deep space stations to Space Flight Operations Facility (SFOF) and the Goddard Space Flight Center, as well as 50,000 bits/sec wideband data lines from DSS 14 to the SFOF, thus providing the capability for data flow of two 16,200 bits/sec high-rate telemetry data streams in real time. The TDS performed prelaunch training and testing and provided support for the Mariner Mars 1971/Mission Operations System training and testing. The facilities of the ETR, DSS 71, and stations of the MSFN provided flight support coverage at launch and during the near-earth phase. The DSSs 12, 14, 41, and 51 of the DSN provided the deep space phase support from 30 May 1971 through 4 June 1971.

A gamma ray monitor for the OSO-7 spacecraft.

A NaI(T2) gamma ray spectrometer with a CsI(Na) charged particle and anti-Compton shield has been developed for the spacecraft. The spacecraft telemetry system employs a 800 Hz clock and reads data out on a basic 32-word (byte) Main Frame cycle. The data from the instrument include spectral data, X-ray data, and housekeeping data. The gamma ray pulses from the anode of the central detector flow through the front end electronics, where they are amplified by a charge sensitive preamplifier. The admission of the desired gamma ray into the data stream is controlled by a linear gate.

Design study report. Volume 2: Electronic unit

The recording system discussed is required to record and reproduce wideband data from either of the two primary Earth Resources Technology Satellite sensors: Return Beam Vidicon (RBV) camera or Multi-Spectral Scanner (MSS). The camera input is an analog signal with a bandwidth from dc to 3.5 MHz; this signal is accommodated through FM recording techniques which provide a recorder signal-to-noise ratio in excess of 39 db, black-to-white signal/rms noise, over the specified bandwidth. The MSS provides, as initial output, 26 narrowband channels. These channels are multiplexed prior to transmission, or recording, into a single 15 Megabit/second digital data stream. Within the recorder, the 15 Megabit/second NRZL signal is processed through the same FM electronics as the RBV signal, but the basic FM standards are modified to provide an internal, 10.5 MHz baseland response with signal-to-noise ratio of about 25 db. Following FM demodulation, however, the MSS signal is digitally re-shaped and re-clocked so that good bit stability and signal-to-noise exist at the recorder output.

A new approach to telemetry data processing

An approach for a preprocessing system for telemetry data processing was developed. The philosophy of the approach is the development of a preprocessing system to interface with the main processor and relieve it of the burden of stripping information from a telemetry data stream. To accomplish this task, a telemetry preprocessing language was developed. Also, a hardware device for implementing the operation of this language was designed using a cellular logic module concept. In the development of the hardware device and the cellular logic module, a distributed form of control was implemented. This is accomplished by a technique of one-to-one intermodule communications and a set of privileged communication operations. By transferring this control state from module to module, the control function is dispersed through the system. A compiler for translating the preprocessing language statements into an operations table for the hardware device was also developed. Finally, to complete the system design and verify it, a simulator for the collular logic module was written using the APL/360 system.

Yield analysis of large capacity magnetic bubble circuits with redundancy design

The fabrication yield of an on-chip modifiable redundant circuit design for a 100M bit serial shift register is evaluated. The yield model is a redundancy design in which there is a primary loop and a set of secondary loops which can be enabled/disabled without introducing blanks to the data stream. This function has a finite yield, the loop-modification yield factor, which must be greater than 0.9 to make the system more economical than the simple nonredundant design. It is further established that small loop capacities greatly degrade the yield because of the effect of the modification yield factor, while large loop capacities degrade the yield because of defects in the operating area. As the modification yield increases the optimum loop capacity decreases. An optimum value for the number of redundant loops exists for each loop capacity. Other factors that affect the yield are the garnet film and the processed circuit.

Impact of remote sensing upon the planning, management, and development of water resources

A survey of the principal water resource users was conducted to determine the impact of new remote data streams on hydrologic computer models. The analysis of the responses and direct contact demonstrated that: (1) the majority of water resource effort of the type suitable to remote sensing inputs is conducted by major federal water resources agencies or through federally stimulated research, (2) the federal government develops most of the hydrologic models used in this effort; and (3) federal computer power is extensive. The computers, computer power, and hydrologic models in current use were determined.

An MSK approach to offset QASK

This paper demonstrates that an offset quadrature amplitude-shift-keyed (OQASK) signal can be represented as an n-component version of a minimum-shift-keyed (MSK) signal. For example, the signal set obtained by summing two MSK signals which are 6 dB different in power and are formed by continuous phase, frequency modulating the same oscillator with two independent binary antipodal data streams, is spectrally equivalent to an OQASK signal set composed of 16 signals in which the symbol pulse is a half-cycle sinusoid rather than the conventional rectangular form. Such generalizations as the above allow for potentially simpler implementation of spectrally shaped OQASK.

Integrated source and channel encoded digital communication system design study

The analysis of the forward link signal structure for the shuttle orbiter Ku-band communication system was carried out, based on the assumptions of a 3.03 Mcps PN code. It is shown that acquisition requirements for the forward link can be met at the acquisition threshold C/N0 sub 0 value of about 60 dB-Hz, which corresponds to a bit error rate (BER) of about 0.001. It is also shown that the tracking threshold for the forward link is at about 57 dB-Hz. The analysis of the bent pipe concept for the orbiter was carried out, along with the comparative analysis of the empirical data. The complexity of the analytical approach warrants further investigation to reconcile the empirical and theoretical results. Techniques for incorporating a text and graphics capability into the forward link data stream are considered and a baseline configuration is described.

Panoramic attitude sensor

Each subassembly, design analysis, and final calibration data on all assemblies for the Panormic Attitude Sensor (PAS) are described. The PAS is used for course attitude determination on the International Ultraviolet Explorer Spacecraft (IUE). The PAS contains a sun sensor which is sensitive only to the sun's radiation and a mechanically scanned sensor which is sensitive to the earth, moon, and the sun. The signals from these two sensors are encoded and sent back in the telemetry data stream to determine the spacecraft attitude.

Efficient digital encoding scheme

Modified NRZ (non-return-to-zero) code immunizes record and playback systems against dc drift and bit slippage. In order to maximize bit packing density improved code called J-NRZ gives 100 percent NRZ efficiently and solves DC drift problem by adding check bits in specified format when long string is encountered. Remainder of data stream is encoded in NRZ format.
