Modeling the First Hydrogen Direct Reduction Pilot Reactor for Ironmaking in the USA Using Finite Element Analysis and Its Validation Using Pilot Plant Trial Data

Direct reduction of hematite pellets with hydrogen (H 2 ) was used to produce directly reduced iron (DRI) in a pilot scale reactor at a pellet feed rate of 21.4 kg/h. At a steady state, operational parameters of the pilot plant (gas recycling rate and inlet temperature) along with key reactor output parameters, the pellet metallization, and the internal temperature profile of the reactor were reported for two scenarios with high recycle and low recycle rate of H 2 . Scenario 1, with a high recycle rate of 400 L/min H 2 along with external heating of 870 °C, gave an average metallization of 91.8%, while Scenario 2, with low recycle rate of 100 L/min H 2 and external heating of 850 °C gave a metallization of 67.8% due to the higher moles of H 2 available for reduction and the external energy required for the endothermic reduction reaction in Scenario 1 as compared with Scenario 2. Finite element analysis was used to build a model of the shaft reactor, which was validated against the metallization and internal temperature profile data. The average metallization values predicted by the model were very close to the metallization values obtained from the pilot plant samples, with 90.9% average metallization for Scenario 1 and 65.6% average metallization for Scenario 2. The internal temperature profiles in the lower region of the reactor obtained from the model were very close to these pilot plant data, with a maximum difference of 52.7 °C and 67.6 °C for Scenarios 1 and 2, respectively. The pilot plant reactor model was used extensively in the commissioning of the pilot plant and to predict the startup outcomes for a given set of operating parameters.

Search for magnetic monopoles in lunar material.

A search for magnetic monopoles in lunar material has been performed by the electromagnetic measurement of the magnetic charge of samples. All measurements were found consistent with zero charge for all samples and inconsistent with any other value allowed by the Dirac theory. Upper limits are determined for the monopole flux in cosmic radiation and for the pair-production cross section in proton-nucleon collisions.

Multistage, multiseasonal and multiband imagery to identify and qualify non-forest vegetation resources

A description of space and supporting aircraft photography for the interpretation and analyses of non-forest (shrubby and herbaceous) native vegetation is presented. The research includes the development of a multiple sampling technique to assign quantitative area values of specific plant community types included within an assigned space photograph map unit. Also, investigations of aerial film type, scale, and season of photography for identification and quantity measures of shrubby and herbaceous vegetation were conducted. Some work was done to develop automated interpretation techniques with film image density measurement devices.

Cosmogenic nuclides in football-sized rocks.

The activity of long- and short-lived isotopes in a series of samples from a vertical column through the center of rock 14321 was measured. Rock 14321 is a 9 kg fragmental rock whose orientation was photographically documented on the lunar surface. Also investigated was a sample from the lower portion of rock 14310, where, in order to study target effects, two different density fractions (mineral separates) were analyzed. A few nuclides in a sample from the comprehensive fines 14259 were measured. This material has been collected largely from the top centimeter of the lunar soil. The study of the deep samples of 14321 and 14310 provided values for the activity of isotopes at points where only effects produced by galactic cosmic rays are significant.

Remote sensing study of Maumee River effects of Lake Erie

The effects of river inputs on boundary waters were studied in partial support of the task to assess the significance of river inputs into receiving waters, dispersion of pollutants, and water quality. The effects of the spring runoff of the Maumee River on Lake Erie were assessed by a combination of ship survey and remote sensing techniques. The imagery obtained from a multispectral scanner of the west basin of Lake Erie is discussed: this clearly showed the distribution of particulates throughout the covered area. This synoptic view, in addition to its qualitative value, is very useful in selecting sampling stations for shipboard in situ measurements, and for extrapolating these quantitative results throughout the area of interest.

Zero-G processing of magnets. Experiment MA-070

The magnetic compounds under study, manganese-bismuth (MnBi) copper-cobalt-cerium (Cu,Co)5Ce, are representative of magnetic alloy systems that have the potential for the development of high coercive strength and a high energy product. The samples of 50 at. % bismuth and 50 at. % manganese solidified in the low-g environment demonstrated a substantial improvement in the macroscopic chemical homogeneity. The bismuth/manganese-bismuth directionally solidified eutectic flight samples exhibited marked superior magnetic properties. Intrinsic coercive strengths in excess of 185 Koe have been measured in the low-g processed samples at 77 K. The average value of inductance was improved by 76 percent, and the energy product was improved by 57 percent. Additional results indicate that, in the near-absence of the gravitational body force, contained fluids will assume a lowest energy configuration that differs significantly from that found terrestrially.

Terrestrial analogs of the Hellespontus dunes, Mars

Geomorphic features in the Hellespontus region, Mars, were compared with dunes of the crescentic ridge type in numerous terrestrial sand seas quantitatively by dimensional analysis of dune lengths, widths, and wavelengths. Mean values for the Hellespontus dunes are close to mean values derived from measurements of all sampled terrestrial sand seas. Terrestrial analogs of form and areal distribution of the Hellespontus dunes are shown by comparison of scale ratios derived from the measurements. Dunes of similar form occur in South West Africa, in Pakistan, in the southeastern Arabian peninsula, in the Sahara, in eastern USSR and northern China, and in western North America. Terrestrial analogs closest to form and areal distribution of the Hellespontus dunes are in the Kara Kum Desert, Turkmen SSR, and in the Ala Shan (Gobi) Desert, China.

Rb-Sr isochron age of the Manicouagan melt sheet, Quebec, Canada

Rb-Sr isotopic data for mineral separates from a rock of the Manicouagan impact melt sheet define an isochron of age T = 214 + or - 5 (2 sigma) m.y. which agrees with the K-Ar age of 210 + or - 8 (2 sigma) calculated by Wolfe (1971). The initial Sr-87/Sr-86 ratio I is found to be 0.70991 + or - 0.00007 (2 sigma); four whole rock samples yield age-corrected I values ranging from 0.70965 to 0.71006. These high I values support the hypothesis that the melt sheet was derived by total melting of Grenville basement rocks during the impact event 214 m.y. ago.

A survey of interstellar H I from L-alpha absorption measurements. II

This paper presents interstellar H I column densities, mean H I space densities, total neutral hydrogen column densities, and total mean hydrogen space densities toward 100 stars surveyed in the L-alpha region with the U2 detector of the Copernicus satellite. The data for 47 stars are compared with OAO 2 results, and ratios of gas to E(B-V) color excess are computed for 30 'intercloud' stars, 45 'cloud' stars, and the combined sample of 75 stars. A definitive value of 5.8 x 10 to the 21st power atoms/sq cm per mag is obtained for the mean ratio of total neutral hydrogen to color excess, indicating that this ratio seems to be a constant, independent of location in the sky, except possibly toward stars with anomalous extinction. The anomalous ratio determined for Rho Oph is examined, and the galactic distribution of neutral hydrogen is evaluated. The following values are estimated for matter in the galactic plane within 500 pc of the sun: a total mean hydrogen space density of 1.15 atoms/cu cm, a mean H2 space density of 0.143 molecule/cu cm (possibly a lower limit), and a mean H I space density of 0.86 atom/cu cm (a possible overestimate).

Supernova remnants in the Large Magellanic Cloud

X-ray emission from 10 previously identified supernova remnants (SNR) in the Large Magellanic Cloud has been discovered in a partially completed survey of this nearby galaxy with the imaging proportional counter on the Einstein Observatory. The X-ray luminosities (0.5-3.0 keV) of these remnants range from 3 x 10 to the 35th to 4 x 10 to the 37th ergs/s. N157B and N158A, whose identifications as SNR were previously based solely on their radio spectra, have been detected as strong X-ray emitters. Two other objects from an optically selected list of candidate SNR were found to coincide with X-ray sources and therefore probably are SNR. The value of obtaining such a uniform sample of SNR at a known distance is illustrated by comparing the properties of the remnants and by fitting standard evolutionary models to the results.

Mineralogical, optical, geochemical, and particle size properties of four sediment samples for optical physics research

X-ray diffraction and spectroscopy were used to investigate the mineralogical and chemical properties of the Calvert, Ball Old Mine, Ball Martin, and Jordan Sediments. The particle size distribution and index of refraction of each sample were determined. The samples are composed primarily of quartz, kaolinite, and illite. The clay minerals are most abundant in the finer particle size fractions. The chemical properties of the four samples are similar. The Calvert sample is most notably different in that it contains a relatively high amount of iron. The dominant particle size fraction in each sample is silt, with lesser amounts of clay and sand. The indices of refraction of the sediments are the same with the exception of the Calvert sample which has a slightly higher value.

Minority carrier diffusion lengths and absorption coefficients in silicon sheet material

Most of the methods which have been developed for the measurement of the minority carrier diffusion length of silicon wafers require that the material have either a Schottky or an ohmic contact. The surface photovoltage (SPV) technique is an exception. The SPV technique could, therefore, become a valuable diagnostic tool in connection with current efforts to develop low-cost processes for the production of solar cells. The technique depends on a knowledge of the optical absorption coefficient. The considered investigation is concerned with a reevaluation of the absorption coefficient as a function of silicon processing. A comparison of absorption coefficient values showed these values to be relatively consistent from sample to sample, and independent of the sample growth method.

Measurement accuracies in band-limited extrapolation

The problem of numerical instability associated with extrapolation algorithms is addressed. An attempt is made to estimate the bounds for the acceptable errors and to place a ceiling on the measurement accuracy and computational accuracy needed for the extrapolation. It is shown that in band limited (or visible angle limited) extrapolation the larger effective aperture L' that can be realized from a finite aperture L by over sampling is a function of the accuracy of measurements. It is shown that for sampling in the interval L/b absolute value of xL, b1 the signal must be known within an error e sub N given by e sub N squared approximately = 1/4(2kL') cubed (e/8b L/L')(2kL') where L is the physical aperture, L' is the extrapolated aperture, and k = 2pi lambda.

Analysis of high altitude remotely sensed data collected in the Nantucket Shoals experiment 4-15 May, 1981

High altitude ocean color scanner ratios of band 2 (456 to 476 nanometers) to band 4 (539 to 559 nanometers) and band 1 (418 to 438 nanometers) to band 3 (498 to 518 nanometers) had high correlation coefficient values (-0.928 and 0.891 respectively) with seven boat sampled chlorophyll a measurements. The range of chlorophyll a concentrations was small (1.7-2.58 mg/cu m.). Each ratio was used to calculate chlorophyll a values for the center pixel of each scan line on flight lines 5 and 6. The two ratios produced dissimilar chlorophyll a trends. Due to the high noise level in the scanner data, no reliable synoptic chlorophyll a map could be generated with either ratio algorithm.

Rain estimation from satellites: An examination of the Griffith-Woodley technique

The Griffith-Woodley Technique (GWT) is an approach to estimating precipitation using infrared observations of clouds from geosynchronous satellites. It is examined in three ways: an analysis of the terms in the GWT equations; a case study of infrared imagery portraying convective development over Florida; and the comparison of a simplified equation set and resultant rain map to results using the GWT. The objective is to determine the dominant factors in the calculation of GWT rain estimates. Analysis of a single day's convection over Florida produced a number of significant insights into various terms in the GWT rainfall equations. Due to the definition of clouds by a threshold isotherm the majority of clouds on this day did not go through an idealized life cycle before losing their identity through merger, splitting, etc. As a result, 85% of the clouds had a defined life of 0.5 or 1 h. For these clouds the terms in the GWT which are dependent on cloud life history become essentially constant. The empirically derived ratio of radar echo area to cloud area is given a singular value (0.02) for 43% of the sample, while the rainrate term is 20.7 mmh-1 for 61% of the sample. For 55% of the sampled clouds the temperature weighting term is identically 1.0. Cloud area itself is highly correlated (r=0.88) with GWT computed rain volume. An important, discriminating parameter in the GWT is the temperature defining the coldest 10% cloud area. The analysis further shows that the two dominant parameters in rainfall estimation are the existence of cold cloud and the duration of cloud over a point.

Fracture analysis of notched composites

The problem of part-through cracks emanating from a central notch in a composite laminate is considered. The composite laminate is modeled as an orthotropic plate and along the branches, it is assumed that the stresses are carried by the fibers only. The stresses along the uncracked portions are assumed to be proportional to the crack opening displacement at the point. After formulating the branched crack problem, the model is applied to a(+45 deg)25 composite laminate. The stress concentration factors for the fibers are computed for various values of the spring constant K. Sample results showing the crack opening displacement are also displayed.
