Thermal Assessment and In-Situ Monitoring of Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors in Power Electronic Modules: Preprint

Insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) power modules are devices commonly used for switching of high voltages and currents. Usage and environmental conditions can cause these power modules to degrade over time, and this gradual process may eventually lead to catastrophic failure of the device. This degradation process may cause some early performance symptoms related to the state of health of the power module, making it possible to detect reliability degradation of the IGBT module. Testing can be used to accelerate this process, permitting a rapid determination of whether specific declines in device reliability can be characterized. In this study, thermal cycling was conducted on multiple power modules simultaneously in order to assess the effect of thermal cycling on the degradation of the power module. In-situ monitoring of temperature was performed from inside each power module using high temperature thermocouples. Device imaging and characterization was performed along with temperature data analysis, to assess failure modes and mechanisms within the power modules. While the experiment was aimed to assess the potential damage effects of thermal cycling on die attach, results indicated that wirebond degradation was the life limiting failure mechanism.

ASDTIC duty-cycle control for power converters

The application of analog signal to discrete interval converter (ASDTIC), a hybrid micromodule, two loop control subsystem, to a switching, stepdown dc to dc converter is described. The power circuitry, interface and ASDTIC subsystems used in this switching regulator were developed to exhibit the improved regulation, transient performance, regulator stability and freedom from the effects of variations in parts characteristics due to environmental changes and aging. ASDTIC can be used with other types of power circuits that use duty-cycle control techniques by simple changes in the interface subsystem. The circuitry and performance characteristics of a +10V dc switching converter as well as that of the ASDTIC micromodule are described. Realization of the ASDTIC hybrid micromodule has been accomplished with a hermetically sealed, beam-lead, bonded/deposited nichrome thin film resistors, discrete capacitors and integrated circuits on dilithic, glazed alumina substrates using 22 feed through terminals in an integrated package.

Power Supply Unit

The Cuk DC to DC Switching Converter was developed by Caltech Professors, Slobodan Cuk and R. D. Middlebrook. The converter changes unsuitable dc voltage into one or more voltages suitable for powering electronic equipment; it can also be used in converting dc current to ac and vice versa. It was named one of the 100 most significant technical advances of 1979. The Cuk converter is more efficient than previous conversion devices, simpler, smaller, lighter, cheaper and highly reliable. The first application of the technology is in the Compucorp 685 word/data processor, manufactured by Compucorp. NASA waived title rights; Caltech granted exclusive license to the inventors, who in turn, transferred their rights to a company they founded called TESLA Company, which sublicenses the converter design and related technology to companies making power supplies for use in their own products.

High current, high bandwidth laser diode current driver

A laser diode current driver has been developed for free space laser communications. The driver provides 300 mA peak modulation current and exhibits an optical risetime of less than 400 ps. The current and optical pulses are well behaved and show minimal ringing. The driver is well suited for QPPM modulation at data rates up to 440 Mbit/s. Much previous work has championed current steering circuits; in contrast, the present driver is a single-ended on/off switch. This results in twice the power efficiency as a current steering driver. The driver electrical efficiency for QPPM data is 34 percent. The high speed switch is realized with a Ku-band GaAsFET transistor, with a suitable pre-drive circuit, on a hybrid microcircuit adjacent to the laser diode.

Demonstrating Distribution System Resiliency through Grid-Edge Microgrids, on a Multi-Site Networked Hardware-in-Loop Platform

With the increasing penetration of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) at the grid-edge, power systems include more energy storage, remote switches, relays, voltage regulators, and other intelligent electronic devices (IED). Effective control of these grid-edge devices by using Advanced Distribution Management Systems (ADMS) can yield substantial improvements to the resiliency and power quality of distribution systems. In this paper, improvements to the resiliency of a distribution system are demonstrated using a multi-site evaluation environment consisting of a real-time Hardware-in-Loop (HIL) setup in which DERs and other IEDs are modeled; and an ADMS which monitors and is able to control the distribution system assets. The HIL model and the ADMS are located 2400 km away, with communication between the sites enabled by a data manager using Distributed Network Protocol 3 (DNP3), demonstrating the system's capabilities even over long distances. After a simulated transmission system failure in the HIL demonstration setup, DERs and other devices are operated to restore critical loads and node voltage profile (to within the 'nominal +/-5%' band) in the distribution system.

Environmental testing of a Q-switched Nd:YLF laser and a Nd:YAG ring laser

A Q-switched Nd:YLF laser (model 110-02) and a Nd:YAG ring laser (model 120-04) from Lightwave Electronics were subjected to thermal and vibration tests similar to what can be expected during launch and flight on a spacecraft. Even though these lasers were not designed for space flight, environmental tests were performed to identify major design weaknesses. Laser performance (output power, energy, pulsewidth, lasing threshold etc.) were measured prior to and after thermal vibration tests. Average output power of the Q-switched laser degraded 15-20 percent after thermal tests and an additional 20-25 percent after vibration tests. Post diagnostic tests revealed that degradation of the Q-switched laser was due to misalignment of pump focusing optics and the laser cavity.

Chromophore carbonyl twisting in fluorescent biosensors encodes direct readout of protein conformations with multicolor switching

Fluorescent labeling of proteins is a powerful tool for probing structure-function relationships with many biosensing applications. Structure-based rules for systematically designing fluorescent biosensors require understanding ligand-mediated fluorescent response mechanisms which can be challenging to establish. We installed thiol-reactive derivatives of the naphthalene-based fluorophore Prodan into bacterial periplasmic glucose-binding proteins. Glucose binding elicited paired color exchanges in the excited and ground states of these conjugates. X-ray structures and mutagenesis studies established that glucose-mediated color switching arises from steric interactions that couple protein conformational changes to twisting of the Prodan carbonyl relative to its naphthalene plane. Mutations of residues contacting the carbonyl can optimize color switching by altering fluorophore conformational equilibria in the apo and glucose-bound proteins. A commonly accepted view is that Prodan derivatives report on protein conformations via solvatochromic effects due to changes in the dielectric of their local environment. Here we show that instead Prodan carbonyl twisting controls color switching. These insights enable structure-based biosensor design by coupling ligand-mediated protein conformational changes to internal chromophore twists through specific steric interactions between fluorophore and protein.

Integrated On-Board Charger for Dual Motor Based Electric Vehicle Power Train

This paper presents an integrated on-board charger for dual motor based electric vehicle (EV) power train with silicon carbide semiconductor switch-based traction inverters. The proposed charger architecture reconfigures the traction inverters to be used in the battery charging mode, thereby eliminating several high frequency switches and their accessories. The motor windings are reused as line inductors for the power factor correction (PFC) rectifier stage in the charging mode thereby reducing the requirements of magnetic components. The architectures reduce the cost, weight, and volume of the EV power train. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the working principle of the proposed architecture.

MIDAS-DC-AC Tool: Fully Automating the Acquisition of AC Power Flow Solution (MIDAS-DC2AC)

MIDAS DC2AC is an automated tool for achieving a converged AC power flow solution from any dispatch, e.g., determined using DC power flow model based optimal power flow. The entire process is free of human interference. It is usually encountered in practice that, even with a DC power flow solution, acquiring the solved AC power flow solution, if exists, sometimes could be a challenging task, especially during the planning stage. It is also difficult to distinguish the unsolvable cases from diverging iterations. Manual adjustments to approach the desired power flow condition has been largely relied on in the past using lots of engineering heuristics. This tool provides a systematic way to first achieve a solvable AC power flow case by modifying the power flow condition, and then try to track the AC power flow solution while gradually removing the adopted changes. If all adopted changes can be completely removed, then the original AC power flow solution is obtained. Otherwise, insights for actionable controls are derived to help operation and planning. Currently, this tool has been implemented in Python using SIEMENS PTI PSS/E as power flow solver, where only adjusting generator terminal voltage set point is considered as an available means to try to turn an unsolved power flow to a solved one. In future, more means should be considered, including the operation of tap-changing transformers, switched shunts and redispatch of active power.

A Battery Charger and State of Charge Indicator

A battery charger which has a full wave rectifier in series with a transformer isolated 20 kHz dc-dc converter with high frequency switches, which are programmed to actively shape the input dc line current to be a mirror image of the ac line voltage is discussed. The power circuit operates at 2 kW peak and 1 kW average power. The BC/SCI has two major subsystems: (1) the battery charger power electronics with its controls; and (2) a microcomputer subsystem which is used to acquire battery terminal data and exercise the state of charge software programs. The state of charge definition employed is the energy remaining in the battery when extracted at a 10 kW rate divided by the energy capacity of a fully charged new battery. The battery charger circuit is an isolated boost converter operating at an internal frequency of 20 kHz. The switches selected for the battery charger are the single most important item in determining its efficiency. The combination of voltage and current requirements dictate the use of high power NPN Darlington switching transistors. The power circuit topology is a three switch design which utilizes a power FET on the center tap of the isolation transformer and the power Darlingtons on each of the two ends. An analog control system is employed to accomplish active input current waveshaping as well as the necessary regulation.

RF MEMS and Their Applications in NASA's Space Communication Systems

Radio frequency (RF) and microwave communication systems rely on frequency, amplitude, and phase control circuits to efficiently use the available spectrum. Phase control circuits are required for electronically scanning phase array antennas that enable radiation pattern shaping, scanning, and hopping. Two types of phase shifters, which are the phase control circuits, are most often used. The first is comprised of two circuits with different phase characteristics such as two transmission lines of different lengths or a high pass and low pass filter and a switch that directs the RF power through one of the two circuits. Alternatively, a variable capacitor, or varactor, is used to change the effective electrical path length of a transmission line, which changes the phase characteristics. Filter banks are required for the diplexer at the front end of wide band communication satellites. These filters greatly increase the size and mass of the RF/microwave systems, but smaller diplexers may be made with a low loss varactor or a group of capacitors, a switch and an inductor.

Circuit Stops Prelasing In A Q-Switched Laser

Protective shutdown circuit stops prelasing in Q-switched laser operating at pulse-repetition rate of about 10 Hz. During normal operation, Q-switch prevents emission of light from laser cavity during application of Q-switch-trigger pulse. When circuit detects prelasing, it triggers relay turning off laser power supply. Circuit integrated into almost any Q-switched-laser system, provided one gains access to laser light, Q-switch-trigger pulse, and safety-interlock line of laser power supply.

A Low-Profile Gate Power Supply for a SiC Phase Leg with Reduced Isolation Capacitance

Gate driver power supply (GDPS) for SiC devices needs power to 5 W as the switching frequency increases to hundreds of kHz. Resonant converters with planar magnetics demand GDPS with a lower profile. Also, the isolation capacitance (Cp) needs to be minimized for SiC devices with high dv/dt. This paper proposed a planar 5 W*2, 20 V isolated gate power supply for a SiC phase leg in the EV traction inverter. Air-core magnetics with PCB windings are applied for low profile. A single-switch resonant Class-E topology is proposed with zero-voltage switching at 6.78 MHz to minimize the magnetics footprint for a 6 pF Cp. Compared with commercial power supplies with similar power, the proposed power supply reduced the profile and Cp by more than half without sacrificing its efficiency and power density.

High power density compact drive integrated motor for electric transportation

This project, initially part of OPEN 2018, and subsequently the ASCEND effort, targeted demonstration of significant enhancements in internal permanent magnet (IPM) motor torque and power density for current and future ground and air electric transportation applications. These were achieved through: (1) embedded two-phase system thermal management, (2) coupled, multi-scale electrical-electromagnetic-thermal-mechanical co-design and optimization, (3) size and weight reduction of motor and drive electronics through elimination of redundant cooling and coupling hardware, and (4) higher efficiency operation of SiC wide bandgap power electronics packaging through high temperature operation (200 oC). The proposed approach utilizes a single dielectric coolant for closed loop two-phase thermal management, and a combined heat rejection unit for the IPM and drive. Wick assisted liquid delivery for evaporative thermal management is utilized for the motor, and the drive electronics utilize the same coolant in flow boiling within the cold plate structures. Through the use of three-dimensional packaging for SiC, and novel drive topologies with reduced switching losses, significant increases in power density and compactness were targeted.

Record performance in intrinsic, impurity-free lateral diamond photoconductive semiconductor switches

Photoconductive semiconductor switches (PCSSs) are fabricated on type IIa diamond substrates with varying boron and nitrogen impurity levels (<10 14 –10 16 cm –3 ). The photoresponse of lateral PCSS is reported over the incident laser wavelength range (212–240 nm), energy per pulse (5–65 μJ), and DC bias (–1.2 to +1.2 kV). The PCSS device with the lowest boron and nitrogen impurity concentration achieves the highest normalized responsivity of 9.1 × 10 –8 A-cm/W-V, peak photocurrent of 8.0 A, and on/off ratio of 2.3 × 10 11 at a DC bias of +1.2 kV with the potential for even higher currents at increased DC bias. All PCSS display fast rise times (<3 ns), limited by the laser's rise time. However, photoresponse measurements reveal that higher impurity levels reduce the photocurrent and decrease the on/off ratio. Furthermore, these results highlight the performance advantages of using low background concentration type IIa diamond substrates for PCSS fabrication and present a promising route toward advanced high-power, high-speed diamond-based switches.
