Tuning the Radius Ratio to Enhance Thermoelectric Properties in the Zintl Compounds AM 2 Sb 2 (A = Ba, Sr; M = Zn, Cd)

Five novel Zintl phase solid solutions in the Ba 1–x Sr x Zn 2–y Cd y Sb 2 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.13(1); 0 ≤ y ≤ 0.32(2)) system were successfully synthesized by the molten Pb metal-flux method, and the powder X-ray diffraction and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses proved that all five title compounds adopted the BaCu 2 S 2 -type phase having the orthorhombic Pnma space group (Z = 4, Pearson code oP20) with five crystallographically independent atomic sites. The previously studied BaCu 2 S 2 -type antimonides demonstrated a limited tolerance for doping in contrast to the CaAl 2 Si 2 -type antimonides. To understand the relatively narrower phase width and limited dopability of the title BaCu 2 S 2 -type phase than the CaAl 2 Si 2 -type phase in the overall Ba 1–x Sr x Zn 2–y Cd y Sb 2 system, the radius ratio of cations and anionic elements r + /r – for two structure types were thoroughly investigated. For the first time, the r + /r – ratio was identified as a critical factor for the phase selectivity: (1) r + /r – > 1 favored the BaCu 2 S 2 -type phase, and (2) r + /r – < 1 favored the CaAl 2 Si 2 -type phase. Further, we also revealed the structural transformation mechanism from the more widely observed CaAl 2 Si 2 -type phase to the title BaCu 2 S 2 -type phase as the relatively larger cationic elements were introduced to the system. A series of DFT calculations using the three hypothetical models indicated that a resonance peak near EF in the density of states curves was descended from the relatively flat band structure at several special symmetry points rationalizing the enhanced Seebeck coefficients of Ba 0.94(1) Sr 0.06 Zn 1.86(3) Cd 0.14 Sb 2 and Ba 0.96(1) Sr 0.04 Zn 1.68(2) Cd 0.32 Sb 2 . Electron localization function analysis rationalized the correlation between the polarity change of anionic Zn/Cd–Sb bonds and the charge carrier mobility on the anionic frameworks. Temperature-dependent thermoelectric properties were studied for the four title compounds, and the results proved that the Sr and Cd doping in the title Ba 1–x Sr x Zn 2–y Cd y Sb 2 system successfully enhanced the ZT values through the increased Seebeck coefficients and the reduced total thermal conductivities.

Soft-Chemical Synthesis, Structure Evolution, and Insulator-to-Metal Transition in Pyrochlore-like λ-RhO 2

λ-RhO 2 , a prototype 4d transition metal oxide, has been prepared by the oxidative delithiation of spinel LiRh 2 O 4 using ceric ammonium nitrate. Average-structure studies of this RhO 2 polytype, including synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction and electron diffraction, indicate the room-temperature structure to be tetragonal, in space group I4 1 /amd, with a first-order structural transition to cubic $Fd\bar{3}m$ at T = 345 K on warming. Synchrotron X-ray pair distribution function analysis and 7 Li solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance measurements suggest that the room-temperature structure displays local Rh-Rh bonding. The formation of these local dimers appears to be associated with a metal-to-insulator transition with a nonmagnetic ground state, as also supported by density functional theory-based electronic structure calculations. In conclusion, this contribution demonstrates the power of soft chemistry to kinetically stabilize a simple binary oxide compound.

Enhancing Properties with Distortion: A Comparative Study of Two Iron Phosphide Fe 2 P Polymorphs

Iron phosphide (Fe 2 P) crystallizes in its own hexagonal crystal structure type (h-Fe 2 P). As found in meteorites, orthorhombic polymorph (o-Fe 2 P) was originally reported as a high-temperature and high-pressure phase. Recently, o-Fe 2 P was described as being stable at ambient pressure, yet no synthetic methods were developed for single-crystal growth or single-phase bulk powder synthesis. Here, we report a successful method for growing o-Fe 2 P single crystals and synthesizing phase-pure polycrystalline samples using tin-flux. In situ powder X-ray diffraction studies showed that the phase transition from o-Fe 2 P to h-Fe 2 P occurs at about 873 K, and below that temperature, the formation of the o-Fe 2 P phase is favored thermodynamically rather than kinetically. Systematic comparison of transport, magnetic, and electrocatalytic properties of both h-Fe 2 P and o-Fe 2 P phases showed a substantial impact of the crystal structure on properties. The orthorhombic structural distortion resulted in considerable changes in magnetic properties, with the o-Fe 2 P phase exhibiting a 60% lower Fe magnetic moment and a substantially higher ferromagnetic Curie temperature than h-Fe 2 P. Further, electrochemical measurements toward the hydrogen evolution reaction in acidic media showed that the o-Fe 2 P phase requires an 80 mV lower overpotential than the h-Fe 2 P phase to generate a current density of -10 mA/cm 2 , and their electronic structures suggest that the higher density of states at the Fermi energy is the origin of superior catalytic activity in o-Fe 2 P.

Site Disorder Drives Cyanide Dynamics and Fast Ion Transport in Li 6 PS 5 CN

Halide argyrodite solid-state electrolytes of the general formula Li 6 PS 5 X exhibit complex static and dynamic disorder that plays a crucial role in ion transport processes. Here, we unravel the rich interplay between site disorder and dynamics in the plastic crystal argyrodite Li 6 PS 5 CN and the impact on ion diffusion processes through a suite of experimental and computational methodologies, including temperature-dependent synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction, AC electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, 7 Li solid-state NMR, and machine learning-assisted molecular dynamics simulations. Sulfide and (pseudo)halide site disorder between the two anion sublattices unilaterally improves long-range lithium diffusion irrespective of the (pseudo)halide identity, which demonstrates the importance of site disorder in dictating bulk ionic conductivity in the argyrodite family. Furthermore, we find that anion site disorder modulates the presence and time scales of cyanide rotational dynamics. Ordered configurations of anions enable fast, quasi-free rotations of cyanides that occur on time scales of 10 11 Hz at T = 300 K. In contrast, we find that cyanide dynamics are slow or frozen in Li 6 PS 5 CN when site disorder between the cyanide and sulfide sublattices is present at T = 300 K. We rationalize the observed differences in cyanide dynamics in the context of elastic dipole interactions between neighboring cyanide anions and local strain induced by the configurations of site disorder that may impact the energetic landscape for cyanide rotational dynamics. Through this study, we find that anion disorder plays a decisive role in dictating the extent and time scales of both lithium ion and cyanide dynamics in Li 6 PS 5 CN.

Structural Studies of Alloyed and Nanoparticle Transition Metal Dichalcogenides by Selenium-77 Solid-State Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy

Layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) such as MoS 2 , MoSe 2 , and WSe 2 are under intense investigation because they are atomically thin semiconductors with photophysical properties that can be tuned by changing their composition or morphology. Mechanochemical processing has been proposed as a method to obtain alloyed TMDCs in the series Mo 1–x W x S y Se 2–y (x = 0–1; y = 0–2). However, elucidating the chemical transformations occurring at the atomic scale following mechanochemical processing can be challenging because the products are often amorphous or microcrystalline. To address this challenge, we probe TMDC mixing and alloying by using a combination of powder X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, 77 Se solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (SSNMR) spectroscopy, and planewave density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The nature of the milling material and reaction atmosphere are shown to be essential factors in limiting the formation of undesired oxide byproducts. We demonstrate acquisition of 77 Se SSNMR spectra using different combinations of Carr-Purcell Meiboom-Gill acquisition (CPMG) pulse sequences, magic angle spinning (MAS), and MAS dynamic nuclear polarization. Further, the combination of SSNMR with the other characterization methods clearly demonstrates that high energy impact ball milling induces molecular level alloying of Mo, W and chalcogen atoms in the family Mo 1–x W x S y Se 2–y . Gauge including projector augmented wave DFT calculations yield accurate 77 Se chemical shift (CS) tensor components. 77 Se SSNMR spectroscopy was also applied to study the structure of WSe 2 nanocrystals intercalated with ethylenediamine. The intercalated WSe 2 nanocrystals exhibit a more positive isotropic 77 Se CS as compared to bulk WSe 2 , however, the 77 Se CS anisotropy is the same, confirming the WSe 2 layers have a similar structure as in their bulk counterparts.

Influence of “Non-Interacting” Flux Concentration in Metallic Flux Growth Synthesis

In situ experiments probing the mechanisms of flux growth synthesis above 1100 °C, though challenging, enable direct observation of synthetic pathways, products, and metastable phases. In this study, in situ powder X-ray diffraction of flux growth synthesis up to 1200 °C was employed to investigate the role of Sn flux in the synthesis of praseodymium cobalt germanides. We demonstrate that metallic fluxes, with minimal incorporation into the target compounds, significantly influence the reaction products of flux growth synthesis of intermetallic compounds. Furthermore, the validation of in situ experiments with bulk synthesis is also presented.

Thermodynamic and Kinetic Mechanisms Governing the Synthesis of Nickel-Poor Cathodes

A deeper understanding of the thermodynamics and kinetics governing the lithiation and layering mechanisms of NMC cathode materials (LiNixMnyCozO 2 , where x + y + z = 1) offers valuable insights for enhancing synthesis methods and improving cathode performance. By employing atomistic and mesoscale approaches informed by in situ powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) experiments, critical parameters for comprehending lithiation and layering processes and reaction rates were identified. The mesoscale approach captured the evolution of the phases and crystallite size observed in the in situ PXRD, revealing the differences in reaction rates with the use of different lithium salts and starting precursors. Ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) underscored the importance of vacancies and structural defects in promoting ion mobility and facilitating the nucleation of a layered domain. This nucleation disrupts the symmetry of disordered phases, ultimately creating a strained phase that serves as a buffer between layered and disordered regions. The lithiation and layering processes reflect a dynamic balance between the thermodynamic drive for a low-energy layered structure and the kinetic of diffusion, which is influenced by temperature and lithium vacancy concentration. Overall, reaction mechanisms are driven by the inherent defects of the intermediate phase that differ for NMC cathode materials. The lithium salts impact the rates of lithiation and layering, with a much slower process for Li 2 CO 3 .

Role of Ammonium Hydroxide on Glucose Oxidase Immobilized in Metal–Azolate Framework-7 Enzyme Activity

Enzymes are nature’s catalysts, but their instability outside native environments limits practical applications. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) offer a promising platform for enzyme immobilization, enhancing stability, and reusability through their tunable porosity and crystallinity. While ZIF-based MOFs have been extensively studied, metal azolate framework-7 (MAF-7) remains largely unexplored for biomimetic mineralization. Its hydrophilic character makes it a promising alternative for enzyme encapsulation; however, the role of essential basic modulators such as ammonium hydroxide (NH 4 OH) on enzyme structure and function has not been investigated. Here, in this study, we examine the NH 4 OH mediated synthesis of glucose oxidase within MAF-7 using powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM), and enzyme assays. Our results show that NH 4 OH modulates crystal morphology, enzyme activity, and nucleation behavior, with higher concentrations leading to partial enzyme denaturation and reduced catalytic performance. By integrating time-resolved cryo-TEM with activity assays, we uncover how modulator concentration impacts early stage crystallization and enzyme folding, a mechanistic insight not previously demonstrated in MOF systems. These findings highlight modulator chemistry as a critical, underexplored variable in MOF synthesis, advancing rational design strategies for enzyme@MOFs (E@MOF) beyond ZIFs and toward more tunable, biocompatible frameworks like MAF-7.

Cs X Si 15 P 21 ( X = Sn or Pb): Polar Noncentrosymmetric Si–P Frameworks Stabilized by Covalent X –P Bonding

Metal silicon phosphides composed of earth-abundant Si and P tend to exhibit semiconducting properties and adopt diverse crystal structures with relatively small additions of structure-directing elements. The potential of silicon phosphide materials in nonlinear optical applications has been hindered by the inability to systematically produce noncentrosymmetric structures with such a flexible framework. Here, in this work, two isostructural compounds with a novel noncentrosymmetric structure were made possible by the inclusion of elements with stereochemically active lone pairs (Sn 2+ and Pb 2+ ). The structures were determined through single-crystal and synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction. Analysis of chemical bonding in real space through the electron localization function revealed stereochemically active Pb 2+ and Sn 2+ species in a trigonal pyramidal coordination with {Pb/Sn}–P bonds. Such covalent bonding between Pb and P is quite uncommon in extended solids and has been reported in a few rare instances. Band structure calculations and linear optical measurements confirm the semiconducting nature of Cs X Si 15 P 21 ( X = Sn or Pb). The synthesis was optimized to yield high-purity polycrystalline samples. The nonlinear optical properties show promising second-harmonic generation (SHG) coefficients from the Kurtz–Perry method. First-principles calculations of the nonlinear optical properties support the experimentally determined SHG values and provide moderate values of birefringence, suggesting Cs X Si 15 P 21 could be phase-matchable and practical nonlinear optical materials in the mid-IR region.

Thin-Film Stabilization and Magnetism of η -Carbide-Type Iron Nitrides

Transition-metal nitrides in ..eta..-carbide-type structures exhibit unusual bonding motifs and proximity to magnetic instabilities. Yet they remain unexplored in thin-film form due to the difficulty of stabilizing nitrogen-poor ternaries among competing phases. Here, we report the thin-film synthesis and phase-stability mapping of the ..eta..-nitride systems Fe-W-N and Fe-Mo-N. Amorphous Fe-M-N (M = W, Mo) combinatorial libraries deposited by reactive cosputtering crystallize upon rapid thermal annealing, enabling systematic identification of synthesis windows as a function of composition and annealing temperature. Using laboratory powder X-ray diffraction and synchrotron grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering, we establish that Fe 3 Mo 3 N-based ..eta..-carbide phases form over a substantially broader compositional and thermal range than W-based compositions, where ..eta.. structures are stabilized only when the films are Fe-rich. These trends are rationalized using mixed chemical-potential vs composition phase diagrams that capture the narrow nitrogen chemical-potential stability of ..eta..-nitrides. Magnetic measurements reveal that ferromagnetism is induced in Fe-rich Fe 3.54 Mo 2.46 N with a small exchange-bias-like response that is absent in Fe 3 W 3 N-based compositions, highlighting the sensitivity of magnetic behavior to modest deviations from stoichiometry. This work establishes practical thin-film synthesis routes for ..eta..-nitride materials and demonstrates how composition can be tuned to access emergent magnetic phenomena in these complex nitrides.

A Mechanistic Understanding of Nonclassical Crystal Growth in Hydrothermally Synthesized Sodium Yttrium Fluoride Nanowires

Sodium yttrium fluoride (NaYF 4 ) is an important upconverting material with many potential uses in chemistry, materials science, and biology, which can be synthesized hydrothermally in both cubic (α) and hexagonal (β) crystallographic polymorphs. Understanding the mechanisms underlying the phase conversion between the cubic and hexagonal polymorphs is of great interest to help inform future synthetic efforts, for example in the design of atomically precise quantum materials with well-defined sizes and morphologies. In this work, we use a combination of analytical transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), in situ liquid cell TEM, atom probe tomography (APT), and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurements to show that the hexagonal NaYF 4 nanowires form through a nonclassical crystal growth mechanism involving the formation and subsequent oriented attachment of mesocrystals consisting of cubic (α) phase units. Additionally, EXAFS measurements suggest that substitutional Yb 3+ point defects within NaYF 4 are distributed evenly throughout the crystal lattice without clustering and also that they may exhibit selective substitution into one of the two possible trivalent yttrium sites in the unit cell for hydrothermally synthesized β-NaYF 4 .

Mechanochemical Synthesis of High-Purity Anhydrous Binary Alkali and Alkaline Earth Chloride Mixtures

A direct synthesis route for high-purity, anhydrous binary salt mixtures has been developed. This atom efficient, solvent-free process is easily scalable, with the potential to produce salt mixtures that meet the purity standards required for industrial heat transfer and nuclear applications. The essence of the methodology lies in mechanochemical synthesis of carnallite precursors that can mitigate the hydrolysis of MgCl 2 ·6H 2 O under direct heating. Each dehydrated salt carnallite was then analyzed for purity and oxide content through subsequent powder X-ray diffraction, and strong acid titration. In conclusion, this process presents a more effective alternative route compared to previous methods for obtaining low-oxide, high-purity chloride salt mixtures.

Probing Mg Intercalation in the Tetragonal Tungsten Bronze Framework V 4 Nb 18 O 55

While commercial Li-ion batteries offer the highest energy densities of current rechargeable battery technologies, their energy storage limit has almost been achieved. Therefore, there is considerable interest in Mg batteries, which could offer increased energy densities in comparison to Li-ion batteries if a high-voltage electrode material, such as a transition-metal oxide, can be developed. However, there are currently very few oxide materials which have demonstrated reversible and efficient Mg 2+ insertion and extraction at high voltages; this is thought to be due to poor Mg 2+ diffusion kinetics within the oxide structural framework. Here, in this paper, the authors provide conclusive evidence of electrochemical insertion of Mg 2+ into the tetragonal tungsten bronze V 4 Nb 18 O 55 , with a maximum reversible electrochemical capacity of 75 mA h g –1 , which corresponds to a magnesiated composition of Mg 4 V 4 Nb 18 O 55 . Experimental electrochemical magnesiation/demagnesiation revealed a large voltage hysteresis with charge/discharge (1.12 V vs Mg/Mg 2+ ); when magnesiation is limited to a composition of Mg 2 V 4 Nb 18 O 55 , this hysteresis can be reduced to only 0.5 V. Hybrid-exchange density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest that a limited number of Mg sites are accessible via low-energy diffusion pathways, but that larger kinetic barriers need to be overcome to access the entire structure. The reversible Mg 2+ intercalation involved concurrent V and Nb redox activity and changes in crystal structure, as confirmed by an array of complementary methods, including powder X-ray diffraction, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Consequently, it can be concluded that the tetragonal tungsten bronzes show promise as intercalation electrode materials for Mg batteries.

Ambient and High Pressure CuNiSb 2 : Metal-Ordered and Metal-Disordered NiAs-Type Derivative Pnictides

The mineral Zlatogorite, CuNiSb 2 , was synthesized in the laboratory for the first time by annealing elements at ambient pressure (CuNiSb 2 -AP). Rietveld refinement of synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction data indicates that CuNiSb 2 -AP crystallizes in the NiAs-derived structure ( P 3 m 1, #164) with Cu and Ni ordering. The structure consists of alternate NiSb 6 and CuSb 6 octahedral layers via face-sharing. The formation of such structure instead of metal disordered NiAs-type structure ( P 6 3 / mm c, #194) is validated by the lower energy of the ordered phase by first-principle calculations. Interatomic crystal orbital Hamilton population, electron localization function, and charge density analysis reveal strong Ni-Sb, Cu-Sb, and Cu-Ni bonding and long weak Sb-Sb interactions in CuNiSb 2 -AP. The magnetic measurement indicates that CuNiSb 2 -AP is Pauli paramagnetic. First-principle calculations and experimental electrical resistivity measurements reveal that CuNiSb 2 -AP is a metal. The low Seebeck coefficient and large thermal conductivity suggest that CuNiSb 2 is not a potential thermoelectric material. Single crystals were grown by chemical vapor transport. The high pressure sample (CuNiSb 2 -8 GPa) was prepared by pressing CuNiSb 2 -AP at 700 °C and 8 GPa. However, the structures of single crystal and CuNiSb 2 -8 GPa are best fit with a disordered metal structure in the P 3 m 1 space group, corroborated by transmission electron microscopy.

Centrosymmetric or Noncentrosymmetric? Transition Metals Talking in K 2 TGe 3 S 8 (T = Co, Fe)

Two new quaternary sulfides K 2 TGe 3 S 8 (T=Co, Fe) have been synthesized by a high-temperature solid-state routine and flux growth method. The crystal growth process of K 2 TGe 3 S 8 (T=Co, Fe) was elucidated by in-situ powder X-ray diffraction and DSC thermal analysis. The mm-sized crystals of K 2 TGe 3 S 8 (T=Co, Fe) were grown. K 2 CoGe 3 S 8 crystallizes in a new structure type in centrosymmetric space group P1¯ (No. 2) with unit cell parameters of a = 7.016(1) Å, b = 7.770(1)Å, c = 14.342(1) Å, α = 93.80(1)°, β = 92.65(1)°, γ = 114.04(1)°. K 2 FeGe 3 S 8 crystallizes in K 2 FeGe 3 Se 8 structure type and the noncentrosymmetric space group P2 1 (No. 4) with unit cell parameters of a = 7.1089(5)Å, b = 11.8823(8)Å, c = 16.7588(11)Å, β = 96.604(2)°. There is a high structural similarity between K 2 CoGe 3 S 8 and K 2 FeGe 3 S 8 . The larger volume coupled with higher degrees of distortion of [FeS 4 ] tetrahedra compared to [CoS 4 ] tetrahedra accounts for the structure’s shift from centrosymmetric to noncentrosymmetric. The theory simulation confirms that [TS 4 ]T= Co or Fe tetrahedra play a crucial role in controlling the structure and properties of K 2 TGe 3 S 8 (T = Co, Fe). The measured optical bandgaps of K 2 CoGe 3 S 8 and K 2 FeGe 3 S 8 are 2.1(1) eV and 2.6(1) eV respectively. K 2 FeGe 3 S 8 shows antiferromagnetic ordering at 24K while no magnetic ordering was detected in K 2 CoGe 3 S 8 . In conclusion, the magnetic measurements also demonstrate the divalent nature of transition metals in K 2 TGe 3 S 8 (T = Co, Fe).

Crystal and Magnetic Structures of the Ternary Ho 2 Ni 0.8 Si 1.2 and Ho 2 Ni 0.8 Ge 1.2 Compounds: An Example of Intermetallics Crystallizing with the Zr 2 Ni 1–x P Prototype

We report two new rare-earth (R) ternary intermetallic compounds—Ho 2 Ni 0.8 T 1.2 with T = Si and Ge—that correspond to the R 5 Ni 2 T 3 phase earlier reported to form in Dy–Ni–T and Ho–Ni–T ternary systems. The compounds crystallize in a filled version of the orthorhombic Zr 2 Ni 1–x P-type structure with x = 0.52; their stoichiometry, determined from both single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction data, is centered on Ho 2 Ni 0.8 T 1.2 with a narrow solid solubility range for the silicide, while the germanide appears to be a line phase. In addition to R = Dy and Ho, R 2 Ni 0.8 T 1.2 compounds also form for R = Y and Tb, representing the first examples of rare-earth-based compounds adopting the Zr 2 Ni 1–x P structural prototype. Bulk magnetization data reveal the main transitions of the ferrimagnetic or ferromagnetic type at TC = 38 K for Ho 2 Ni 0.8 Si 1.2 and TC = 37 K for Ho 2 Ni 0.8 Ge 1.2 , which are followed by subsequent magnetic reordering at lower temperatures. Neutron diffraction shows complex magnetic structures below T C with both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic components and magnetic propagation vector κ 1 = [0, 0, 0]. Below T N ≅ 24 K (22 K) for the silicide (germanide), an additional antiferromagnetic coupling following an incommensurate magnetic propagation vector κ 2 = [κ x , 0, 0] appears to coexist with the first magnetic structure.

The Deep Eutectic Solvent Precipitation Synthesis of Metastable Zn 4 V 2 O 9

A precipitation method involving a deep eutectic solvent (DES)–a mixture of hydrogen bond donor and acceptor–is used to synthesize a ternary metal oxide. Without toxic reagents, precipitates consisting of Zn 3 (OH) 2 V 2 O 7 ·nH 2 O and Zn 5 (OH) 6 (CO 3 ) 2 are obtained by simply introducing deionized H 2 O to the DES solution containing dissolved ZnO and V 2 O 5 . Manipulation of the synthetic conditions demonstrates high tunability in the size/morphology of the two-dimensional nanosheets precipitated during the dynamic equilibrium process. According to differential scanning calorimetry and high-temperature powder X-ray diffraction, Zn 3 V 2 O 8 and ZnO obtained by the annealing of the precipitate are intermediates in the reaction pathway toward metastable Zn 4 V 2 O 9 . Intimate mixing of the metal precursors achieved by the precipitation method allows access to the metastable zinc-rich vanadate with unusually rapid heat treatment. Furthermore, the UV–vis and surface photovoltage spectra reveal the presence of sub-band gap states, stemming from the reduced vanadium (V 4+ ) center. Photoelectrochemical measurements confirm weak photoanodic currents for water and methanol oxidation. For the first time, this work shows the synthesis of a metastable oxide with the DES-precipitation route and provides insight into the structure–property relationship of the zinc-rich vanadate.

Synthesis, Structure, and Electric Conductivity of Higher Hydrides of Ytterbium at High Pressure

While most of the rare-earth metals readily form trihydrides, due to increased stability of the filled 4f electronic shell for Yb(II), only YbH 2.67 , formally corresponding to Yb II (Yb III H 4 ) 2 (or Yb 3 H 8 ), remains the highest hydride of ytterbium. Utilizing the diamond anvil cell methodology and synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction, we have attempted to push this limit further via hydrogenation of metallic Yb and Yb 3 H 8 . Compression of the latter has also been investigated in a neutral pressure-transmitting medium (PTM). While the in situ heating of Yb facilitates the formation of YbH 2+x hydrides, we have not observed clear qualitative differences between the systems compressed in H 2 and He or Ne PTM. In all of these cases, a sequence of phase transitions occurred within ca. 13–18 GPa (P$\bar{31}$m–I4/m phase) and around 27 GPa (to the I4/mmm phase). The molecular volume of the systems compressed in H 2 PTM is ca. 1.5% larger than of those compressed in inert gases, suggesting a small hydrogen uptake. Nevertheless, hydrogenation toward YbH 3 is incomplete, and polyhydrides do not form up to the highest pressure studied here (ca. 75 GPa). As pointed out by electronic transport measurements, the mixed-valence Yb 3 H 8 retains its semiconducting character up to >50 GPa, although the very low remnant activation energy of conduction (<5 meV) suggests that metallization under further compression should be achievable. Finally, we provide a theoretical description of a hypothetical stoichiometric YbH 3 .
