Review of Palliative Radiation Therapy Patterns of Practice for Adrenal Metastases in British Columbia

The adrenal gland is a common site of metastasis in patients with advanced cancer, but it is rarely symptomatic. A subset of patients develop a complex pain syndrome with anorexia, nausea, and poorly localized visceral pain in the back, flank, or epigastric region. These symptoms can affect quality of life and are occasionally challenging to palliate. The role of palliative radiation therapy (PRT) in these patients is unclear. This population-based retrospective study evaluates PRT practices for patients with adrenal metastases and aims to describe treatment response and acute toxicity.

Patterns of Care, Tolerability, and Safety of the First Cohort of Patients Treated on a Novel High-Field MR-Linac Within the MOMENTUM Study: Initial Results From a Prospective Multi-Institutional Registry

High-field magnetic resonance-linear accelerators (MR-Linacs), linear accelerators combined with a diagnostic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner and online adaptive workflow, potentially give rise to novel online anatomic and response adaptive radiation therapy paradigms. The first high-field (1.5T) MR-Linac received regulatory approval in late 2018, and little is known about clinical use, patient tolerability of daily high-field MRI, and toxicity of treatments. Herein we report the initial experience within the MOMENTUM Study (NCT04075305), a prospective international registry of the MR-Linac Consortium.

Patterns of indoor radon concentrations, radon-hazard potential, and radon testing on a small geographic scale in Utah

Currently, there are no publicly-available estimates of indoor radon concentration at scales smaller than the county. Radon-hazard potential soil maps that reflect underlying geologic factors can be created at small geographic scale and linked to residential and census data. We determined the association between residential radon tests and high radon-hazard potential soil at the residential and block group levels using a large Utah-based dataset. We also identified characteristics of block groups with limited tests in the dataset.

Unraveling the size fluctuation and shrinkage of nanovoids during in situ radiation of Cu by automatic pattern recognition and phase field simulation

Void formation is an important aspect of irradiation response of metals. In situ transmission electron microscopy observation for void evolution during irradiation is an effective technique for studying void evolution. However, the amount of data collected during in situ studies drastically overwhelm the current capability for manual data analyses. Here, we used a data-driven approach where a convolutional neural network combined with greedy matching to detect and track nanovoid evolutions and migrations. This approach was able to discover the surprising phenomena of void size fluctuation and shrinkage during irradiation of Cu with pre-existing nanovoids. Phase–field simulations revealed the fundamental mechanism behind this in situ observed phenomenon of void size fluctuation.
