Higgs boson width and couplings at high energy muon colliders with forward muon detection

We propose a novel method using the ZZ-fusion channel and forward muon detection at high energy muon colliders to address the challenge of the Higgs coupling-width degeneracy. Our approach enables inclusive Higgs rate measurement to 0.75% at 10 TeV muon collider, breaking the coupling-width degeneracy. Results indicate the potential to refine Higgs coupling to subpercent levels and estimate its total width within (–0.41%, +2.1%). Key insights include the effectiveness of forward muon tagging in signal-background separation despite broad recoil mass distribution due to muon energy reconstruction and beam energy spread. The study emphasizes the significance of muon rapidity coverage up to |η⁡(μ)| < 6, enhancing measurement precision. Our findings highlight the unique capabilities of high energy lepton colliders for model-independent Higgs coupling determination and lay the groundwork for future advancements in muon collider technology and Higgs physics research.

Axionlike-particle contributions to the μ → e conversion

We study the μ → e conversion process in nuclear targets arising in models of axionlike particles (ALPs) with hadronic and charged lepton flavor violating (CLFV) interactions. Contributions to this process generally fall into two categories: spin-independent (SI) and spin-dependent (SD). While the SI contribution can be generated by a dipole operator through purely leptonic ALP interactions, the SD contribution can also be present through ALP-quark interactions at tree-level. It is naively anticipated that the SI contribution would be dominant due to its coherent enhancement. In this paper, we show that is not generically the case; in particular, for naturally sized ALP couplings to quarks of order ∼ m q / f a , the SD interaction induced by ALP- π 0 mixing turns out to be the leading contribution to μ → e conversion. Intuitively, this stems from the suppressed dipole contribution by the QED one-loop factor which counters the effect of SI coherent enhancement. Our study highlights the importance of μ → e conversion searches in exploring the parameter space of generic ALP models, and demonstrates the competitiveness of these searches in probing the CLFV ALP parameter space in the heavy mass range of m a ≳ m μ . Improved modeling of detector response effects in phonon-based crystal detectors used for dark matter searches

Various dark matter search experiments employ phonon-based crystal detectors operated at cryogenic temperatures. Some of these detectors, including certain silicon detectors used by the SuperCDMS Collaboration, are able to achieve single-charge sensitivity when a voltage bias is applied across the detector. The total amount of phonon energy measured by such a detector is proportional to the number of electron-hole pairs created by the interaction. However, crystal impurities and surface effects can cause propagating charges to either become trapped inside the crystal or create additional unpaired charges, producing non-quantized measured energy as a result. A new analytical model for describing these detector response effects in phonon-based crystal detectors is presented. This model improves upon previous versions by demonstrating how the detector response, and thus the measured energy spectrum, is expected to differ depending on the source of events. Finally, we use this model to extract detector response parameters for SuperCDMS HVeV detectors, and illustrate how this robust modelling can help statistically discriminate between sources of events in order to improve the sensitivity of dark matter search experiments.

Flavor-violating ALPs, electron g − 2 , and the Electron-Ion Collider

We revisit the possibility that light axionlike particles (ALPs) with lepton-flavor-violating couplings could give significant contributions to the electron’s anomalous magnetic moment g e − 2 . Unlike flavor diagonal lepton-ALP couplings, which are exclusively axial, lepton-flavor-violating couplings can have arbitrary chirality. Focusing on the e − τ ALP coupling, we find that the size of the contribution to g e − 2 depends strongly on the chirality of the coupling. A significant part of the parameter space for which such a coupling can explain experimental anomalies in g e − 2 can be probed at the Electron-Ion Collider, which is uniquely sensitive to the chirality of the coupling using the polarization of the electron beam. Tetraquarks from intrinsic heavy quarks

A number of new tetraquark candidate states containing from one to four charm or anticharm quarks have been observed recently. Many of these new states have been discovered at the LHC. The production of these states via intrinsic charm in the proton is investigated. The tetraquark masses obtained in this approach, while dependent on the internal transverse momenta of the partons in the state, are shown to agree well with the measured masses. These calculations can provide some insight into the nature of the tetraquark candidates, whether as a bound meson pair or as a looser configuration of four individual partons. The kinematic distributions of these states as a function of rapidity and transverse momentum are also studied. The possible cross sections for these states are finally considered, with a comparison to the 𝑋⁡(3872) 𝑝 𝑇 distributions from 𝑝 +𝑝 collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ =13 TeV.

Contour deformations for nonholomorphic actions

We show how contour deformations may be used to control the sign problem of lattice Monte Carlo calculations with nonholomorphic Boltzmann factors. Such actions arise naturally in quantum mechanical scattering problems. The approach is demonstrated in conjunction with the holomorphic gradient flow. As our central example we compute the real-time evolution of a particle in a one-dimensional analog of the Yukawa potential. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Exotic particles at the DUNE near detector from charged pion scattering

Fixed-target proton-beam experiments produce a multitude of charged pions that rescatter in the beam dump. These charged pion scattering events can be an additional irreducible source of exotic particles which couple to photons or hadrons. We analyze the sensitivity of the DUNE near detector complex to millicharged particles (MCPs) and heavy axionlike particles (ALPs) with low-energy couplings to gluons. Using the framework of chiral perturbation theory, we demonstrate regimes of parameter space where the charged pion production channel dominates over previously considered production mechanisms for both MCPs and ALPs, thereby improving the sensitivity of DUNE to these new particles compared to previous studies.
