Theoretical and Experimental Beam Plasma Physics (TEBPP)

The theoretical and experimental beam plasma physics (TEBPP) consists of a package of five instruments to measure electric and magnetic fields, plasma density and temperature, neutral density, photometric emissions, and energetic particle spectra during firings of the particle injector (SEPAC) electron beam. The package is deployed on a maneuverable boom (or RMS) and is used to measure beam characteristics and induced perturbations in the near field ( 10 m) and mid field (10 m to 100 m) along the electron beam. The TEBPP package will be designed to investigate induced oscillations and induced electromagnetic mode waves, neutral and ion density and temperature effects, and beam characteristics as a function of axial distance.

Crystalline-silicon reliability lessons for thin-film modules

The reliability of crystalline silicon modules has been brought to a high level with lifetimes approaching 20 years, and excellent industry credibility and user satisfaction. The transition from crystalline modules to thin film modules is comparable to the transition from discrete transistors to integrated circuits. New cell materials and monolithic structures will require new device processing techniques, but the package function and design will evolve to a lesser extent. Although there will be new encapsulants optimized to take advantage of the mechanical flexibility and low temperature processing features of thin films, the reliability and life degradation stresses and mechanisms will remain mostly unchanged. Key reliability technologies in common between crystalline and thin film modules include hot spot heating, galvanic and electrochemical corrosion, hail impact stresses, glass breakage, mechanical fatigue, photothermal degradation of encapsulants, operating temperature, moisture sorption, circuit design strategies, product safety issues, and the process required to achieve a reliable product from a laboratory prototype.

The application of NASCAD as a NASTRAN pre- and post-processor

The NASA Computer Aided Design (NASCAD) graphics package provides an effective way to interactively create, view, and refine analytic data models. NASCAD's macro language, combined with its powerful 3-D geometric data base allows the user important flexibility and speed in constructing his model. This flexibility has the added benefit of enabling the user to keep pace with any new NASTRAN developments. NASCAD allows models to be conveniently viewed and plotted to best advantage in both pre- and post-process phases of development, providing useful visual feedback to the analysis process. NASCAD, used as a graphics compliment to NASTRAN, can play a valuable role in the process of finite element modeling.

Telepresence work station system definition study, part 2

This study effort has shown that the development of a space robotic servicing system is totally feasible. More importantly, many of the key elements of such a system are currently available as the result of previous and ongoing technical efforts. In many cases, decisions remain to be made concerning tradeoffs between options available to satisfy system technology requirements. The primary recommendation resulting from this study is for the development of a flight test bed system that could be used to establish a performance database to assist some of the necessary technical decisions described in the study package. A properly design flight test bed system would prove tremendously useful in terms of rapidly evaluating technology in a realistic setting and would be a great benefit in the development of the operational system.

Development of a graphical display on the DMS test bed

The DMS test bed is a model of a data network aboard space station. Users of the network share data relevant to the functional status of various systems aboard the station. Users may inquire the status of myriad sensors, obtaining reading of station subsystem status in real time via the Data Acquisition and Distribution Service. A graphical display of the status of a simulation of the Environmental Control and Life Support System was developed. Two broad issues were addressed: (1) flexible, extensible software design; and (2) the impact of utilizing standard processors, languages, and graphics packages implementing the software design concept. The experience gained with DEC hardware, the DEC implementation of the GKS graphics standard, and with Ada is summarized.

Development of a tether deployment monitoring system

The feasibility of monitoring the position of a tether during orbital deployment is discussed. Attention is given to the techniques for attaching reflectors to the tether at periodic intervals during the deployment process, which could then be tracked visually or with a radar unit that is pointed towards the targets by the control system. Consideration is also given to a method for tether attitude and tension detection, and a launching device to attach small instrumentation platforms onto the tether during deployment. The configuration of a tether deployment monitoring system (TEDEMS) and the equipment developed to perform the above tasks are described, along with an analysis of requirements for the construction of a family of space-borne TEDEMS suitable for use on the Space Shuttle, Expendable Launch Vehicles, or the Space Station. The potential uses of the TEDEMS for launching small tether-borne experimental packages are discussed. Design and block diagrams are included.

Space Station tethered waste disposal

The Shuttle Transportation System (STS) launches more payload to the Space Station than can be returned creating an accumulation of waste. Several methods of deorbiting the waste are compared including an OMV, solid rocket motors, and a tether system. The use of tethers is shown to offer the unique potential of having a net savings in STS launch requirement. Tether technology is being developed which can satisfy the deorbit requirements but additional effort is required in waste processing, packaging, and container design. The first step in developing this capability is already underway in the Small Expendable Deployer System program. A developmental flight test of a tether initiated recovery system is seen as the second step in the evolution of this capability.

Low-Loss Coupler For Microwave Laser-Diode Modulation

Elimination of series resistor reduces loss of radio-frequency power. Quarter-wavelength matching section connected to transmission line eliminates need for resistor near laser diode and extends frequency response of system. Concept significantly extends relatively flat frequency response of laser diode or similar component, while simplifying design of its package, increasing amplitude of output signal, and reducing dissipation of heat by eliminating resistance. Phase characteristics approximately linear and any digital information transmitted not significantly altered.

Sensor data validation and reconstruction. Phase 1: System architecture study

The sensor validation and data reconstruction task reviewed relevant literature and selected applicable validation and reconstruction techniques for further study; analyzed the selected techniques and emphasized those which could be used for both validation and reconstruction; analyzed Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME) hot fire test data to determine statistical and physical relationships between various parameters; developed statistical and empirical correlations between parameters to perform validation and reconstruction tasks, using a computer aided engineering (CAE) package; and conceptually designed an expert system based knowledge fusion tool, which allows the user to relate diverse types of information when validating sensor data. The host hardware for the system is intended to be a Sun SPARCstation, but could be any RISC workstation with a UNIX operating system and a windowing/graphics system such as Motif or Dataviews. The information fusion tool is intended to be developed using the NEXPERT Object expert system shell, and the C programming language.

Exodus: Prime Mover

The Exodus Prime Mover is an overnight package delivery aircraft designed to serve the Northern Hemisphere of Aeroworld. The preliminary design goals originated from the desire to produce a large profit. The two main driving forces throughout the design process were first to reduce the construction man-hours by simplifying the aircraft design, thereby decreasing the total production cost of the aircraft. The second influential factor affecting the design was minimizing the fuel cost during cruise. The lowest fuel consumption occurs at a cruise velocity of 30 ft/s. Overall, it was necessary to balance the economic benefits with the performance characteristics in order to create a profitable product that meets all specified requirements and objectives.

TROJID: A portable software package for upper-stage trajectory optimization

Performance optimization for upper-stage exoatmospheric vehicles often is performed within the framework of a full capability trajectory simulation package requiring either a large mainframe computer or powerful work-station. Since these software packages tend to include capabilities providing for high-fidelity boost and reentry simulations, the programs usually are quite large and not very portable. The program TROJID is an attempt to provide an environment for the optimization of upper-stage trajectories within a small package capable of being run on a standard desktop microcomputer. Utilizing a state-of-the-art nonlinear programming algorithm and a trajectory simulator implementing impulsive burns and an analytic coast phase propagator, TROJID is capable of producing trajectories for optimal multi-burn upper-stage orbit transfers. The package has been designed to allow full generality in definition of both the trajectory simulator and the parameter optimization problem.

Some useful innovations with TRASYS and SINDA-85

Several innovative methods were used to allow more efficient and accurate thermal analysis using SINDA-85 and TRASYS, including model integration and reduction, planetary surface calculations, and model animation. Integration with other modeling and analysis codes allows an analyst to import a geometry from a solid modeling or computer-aided design (CAD) software package, rather than building the geometry 'by hand.' This is more efficient as well as potentially more accurate. However, the use of solid modeling software often generates large analytical models. The problem of reducing large models was elegantly solved using the response of the transient derivative to a forcing step function. The thermal analysis of a lunar rover implemented two unusual features of the TRASYS/SINDA system. A little-known TRASYS routine SURFP calculates the solar heating of a rover on the lunar surface for several different rover positions and orientations. This is used not only to determine the rover temperatures, but also to automatically determine the power generated by the solar arrays. The animation of transient thermal results is an effective tool, especially in a vivid case such as the 14-day progress of the sun over the lunar rover. An animated color map on the solid model displays the progression of temperatures.

Representing spatial information in a computational model for network management

While currently available relational database management systems (RDBMS) allow inclusion of spatial information in a data model, they lack tools for presenting this information in an easily comprehensible form. Computer-aided design (CAD) software packages provide adequate functions to produce drawings, but still require manual placement of symbols and features. This project has demonstrated a bridge between the data model of an RDBMS and the graphic display of a CAD system. It is shown that the CAD system can be used to control the selection of data with spatial components from the database and then quickly plot that data on a map display. It is shown that the CAD system can be used to extract data from a drawing and then control the insertion of that data into the database. These demonstrations were successful in a test environment that incorporated many features of known working environments, suggesting that the techniques developed could be adapted for practical use.

Applications of GOES-8/9 data to hurricane analysis

GOES-8 was successfully launched in 1994, and has performed up to expeditions and in some cases has actually exceeded pre-launch specifications. A similar geostationary satellite, GOES-9, was launched in May of 1995. This new generation of NOAA's geostationary satellites carry a superior design and instrumentation package that allow for greater detection of meteorological features and parameters. The new GOES imager has a 5 band multispectral capability with high spatial resolution, while the sounder contains 18 thermal infrared (IR) bands plus a low resolution visible band. The imager carries a visible channel with 1 10-bit quantization and increased sampling frequency, a short-wave and long-wave window channel, and a water vapor band with a twofold increase in spatial resolution and a factor of 3 improvement in signal-to-noise over that obtained from previous GOES sensors. The advances in observing the earth's atmospheric system anticipated from these improvements are outlined in Menzel and Purdom (1994). The specific impact of this improved remote sensing capability on the analysis of tropical cyclones is discussed here.
