NCERC Provides Unique Opportunities for University Student Researchers

Five students and one faculty member - sponsored by the Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation (DNN, NA 22) university consortia - visited the National Criticality Experiments Research Center (NCERC) in July of 2023 to measure radiation signatures from Category I Special Nuclear Material (SNM) in a week-long measurement campaign organized by staff at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Participants included University of Florida, University of Michigan, and University of Illinois-Champaign Urbana. The measurement campaign was organized on behalf of the Consortium for Monitoring, Testing, and Verification (MTV), the Nuclear Science and Security Consortium (NSSC), and the Consortium for Enabling Technologies and Innovation (ETI).

Uncovering hidden market opportunities for advanced nuclear reactors

Decarbonizing to meet aggressive climate change mitigation targets requires energy transition within all sectors. In the industrial sector, global emissions will need to decrease by 65–90% by 2050 to avert warming greater than 1.5°C (Pörtner et al., 2022). Recent U.S. laws, including the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), Defense Production Act, Creating Helpful Incentives to Produce Semiconductors (or CHIPS), state programs, and other recent laws, have clean energy requirements and provide financial incentives to accelerate the use of clean energy technologies in the industrial sector. These new laws include supporting mechanisms with direct financial support for nuclear power (e.g., advanced reactor development and hydrogen production). However, advanced nuclear could also gain these financial benefits by coupling with low-carbon industrial projects. For example, microreactors could supply low-carbon energy to producers of critical metals that (1) are eligible to receive investment and production tax credits and favorable loans, and (2) the low-carbon product could gain preference in emerging markets for green products.

Advanced Building Construction (ABC) Research Opportunities Report: Industrializing Construction to Decarbonize Buildings

The U.S. building stock is responsible for 75% of total U.S. electricity use, 40% of energy use, and 35% of CO 2 emissions. To meet bold national climate change goals, the U.S. must decarbonize the building stock by 2050. However, today’s practices to build or renovate buildings to low-carbon, high-performance levels are generally labor intensive, disruptive, and too costly to quickly scale in the U.S. To retrofit 80% of the U.S. building stock in the U.S. by 2050, the retrofit rate will need to increase by about 15 times for residential buildings and two times for commercial buildings. Additionally, there is a major housing deficit in this country where nearly 600,000 people lack adequate or stable shelter, and the pace of construction is not keeping up with the growing demand. New, more industrialized, replicable, and technologically driven approaches to renovation and new building construction are imperative to help meet such significant national needs and achieve the necessary speed and scale to meet national building decarbonization goals.
