Design, development, and fabrication of a electronic analog microminiaturized electronic analog signal to discrete time interval converter

The microminiaturization of an electronic analog signal to discrete time interval converter is presented. Discrete components and integrated circuits comprising the converter were assembled on a thin-film ceramic substrate containing nichrome resistors with gold interconnections. The finished assembly is enclosed in a flat package measuring 3.30 by 4.57 centimeters. The module can be used whenever conversion of analog to digital signals is required, in particular for the purpose of regulation by means of pulse modulation. In conjunction with a precision voltage reference, the module was applied to control the duty cycle of a switching regulator within a temperature range of -55 C to +125 C, and an input voltage range of 10V to 35V. The output-voltage variation was less than + or - 300 parts per million, i.e., less than + or - 3mV for a 10V output.

Basic memory module

Construction and electrical characterization of the 4096 x 2-bit Basic Memory Module (BMM) are reported for the Space Ultrareliable Modular Computer (SUMC) program. The module uses four 2K x 1-bit N-channel FET, random access memory chips, called array chips, and two sense amplifier chips, mounted and interconnected on a ceramic substrate. Four 5% tolerance power supplies are required. At the Module, the address, chip select, and array select lines require a 0-8.5 V MOS signal level. The data output, read-strobe, and write-enable lines operate at TTl levels. Although the module is organized as 4096 x 2 bits, it can be used in a 8196 x 1-bit application with appropriate external connections. A 4096 x 1-bit organization can be obtained by depopulating chips.

Selected reliability studies for the NERVA program

An investigation was made into certain methods of reliability analysis that are particularly suitable for complex mechanisms or systems in which there are many interactions. The methods developed were intended to assist in the design of such mechanisms, especially for analysis of failure sensitivity to parameter variations and for estimating reliability where extensive and meaningful life testing is not feasible. The system is modeled by a network of interconnected nodes. Each node is a state or mode of operation, or is an input or output node, and the branches are interactions. The network, with its probabilistic and time-dependent paths is also analyzed for reliability and failure modes by a Monte Carlo, computerized simulation of system performance.

Identification and analysis of structures in the corona from X-ray photography

This paper summarizes the results of a program of rocket observations of the solar corona with grazing incidence X-ray telescopes. A series of five flights of a Kanigen-surfaced telescope with a few arc seconds resolution, together with the first flight of a newer telescope have resulted in the identification of six classes of coronal structures observable in the X-ray photographs. These are: active regions, active region interconnections, large loop structures associated with unipolar magnetic regions, coronal holes, coronal bright points, and the structures surrounding filament cavities. Two solar flares have been observed. The methods involved in deriving coronal temperature and density information from X-ray photographs are described and the analysis of a bright active region (McMath plage 11035) observed at the west limb on November 24, 1970 is presented as an example of these techniques.

Flat Conductor Cable systems - Originally developed for space flight, useful for commercial applications

Flat Conductor Cable (FCC) technology has now reached a level of development where it is being considered for, and used in, numerous interconnection projects. First developed for aerospace use, FCC is becoming a major contender for commercial wiring tasks as well. This presentation is designed to show why and how FCC has been able to make the transition from the aerospace to the commercial field.

Stability regions of large-scale systems

Using an aggregated comparison system, methods are developed for estimating regions of asymptotic stability for large-scale systems composed of interconnected, exponentially stable subsystems; in general, some of these subsystems are not globally stable. Three different forms of Liapunov functions are shown to be suitable for describing the stability behavior of the aggregated system, but one form in particular, heretofore not used in this context, is found to be the most natural. Using this function, some general results are obtained.

Hybrid-coordinate spacecraft dynamics using large-deformation modal coordinates

For a vehicle amenable to idealization as a set of n + 1 rigid bodies interconnected by n line hinges (implying tree topology), a set of minimum-dimension matrix equations of motion is recorded in terms of variables including the relative rotations of contiguous bodies. When a substructure or portion of the vehicle is subjected to large gross deformations but is restricted to 'small' strains or local deformations, the n-body model is (for sufficiently large n) assumed to experience 'small' relative rotations of contiguous bodies within the substructure, and the equations of motion are linearized in these variables. The application of coordinate transformations and truncations to the linearized subset of the system equations of motion then produces a hybrid-coordinate formulation of the problem involving both discrete and distributed coordinates.

MICTPT - A minicomputer general-purpose microwave two-port analysis program

The implementation of a microwave network-analysis program for computers with 4K words of memory is described. The program is capable of the frequency analysis of networks which include interconnections of lumped elements, transmission lines, waveguides, and any two-port which is described by the elements of a scattering matrix. The network can be described mnemonically rather than by numerical codes. For each frequency in the range, the entire network is collapsed into a single equivalent A matrix, and the input impedance and other characteristics are calculated.

V/STOL flying qualities research using the X-22A

The X-22A has four ducted propellers and four engines. The engines are connected to a common system of rotating shafts which distribute propulsive power to the four propellers. Changes in the direction of the thrust vector are accomplished by rotating the ducts, which are interconnected so that all rotate through the same angle. Thrust magnitude is determined by a collective pitch lever, very similar to a helicopter. There are four variable stability system (VSS) controllers: thrust, pitch, roll, and yaw, and three artificial feel servos for the evaluation pilot cockpit controls, each employing electrohydraulic servos. Longitudinal flying qualities for STOL landing approach, and lateral-directional flying qualities and control power requirements for STOL landing approach are discussed. Attention is given to the data acquisition and processing system.

Large-scale effects of supernova remnants on the Galaxy - Generation and maintenance of a hot network of tunnels

It is found that a supernova rate on the order of 1 per 50 years in the gaseous disk of our Galaxy is sufficient to generate and maintain throughout the interstellar medium a mesh of interconnected tunnels containing very low-density gas. This tunnel system would have a density of approximately 0.01 per cu cm, a temperature of about 1,000,000 K, very low magnetic field strength, tunnel radii of about 10 pc, and would occupy roughly half the interstellar volume. Such a tunnel network may already have been observed in soft X-ray emission, in ultraviolet absorption of O VI against background stars, in the seemingly chaotic distribution of local H I, and in the stringy appearance of velocity-correlated large-scale H I features.

FEP-Teflon covered solar cell array advancements

Progress is reported on the design and development of lightweight, flexible, FEP encapsulated solar cell modules. Such modules are intended to form standardized building blocks for larger roll-up or fold-up solar cell blankets having specific performance in the order of 100 W/sq m and 80 W/kg in space near earth. Modules are constructed by heat-laminating interconnected 200-micron thick single crystal silicon solar cells with solderless front and back contacts between two layers of clear FEP. The outer FEP layer is 125 microns thick and serves as the solar cell cover material. The inner layer is 50 microns thick and serves as the adhesive between the solar cells and a 25-micron thick loadbearing Kapton substrate sheet.

Development for application of parylene coatings

A practical method of applying a parylene (paraxylene) coating to hybrid microcircuit devices was developed for the prevention of circuit malfunctions existing prior to package sealing or formed upon exposure to the service environment. It was found that paralene and an associated primer (if used) had generally little or no adverse effect on the active and passive elements of typical hybrid microcircuits. Exceptions were related to high frequency circuitry, low resistivity thick film resistors, and highly sensitive PIN diodes. Advantages of the use of the coating included increased dielectric strength and increased interconnection bond strength. Coating service life in nitrogen or nitrogen with low levels of oxygen as a contaminant is shown to be in excess of 1000 hours at 150 C and can be projected to be in excess of 5000 hours at 125 C.
