Bonding aluminum beam leads

Report makes it relatively easy for hybrid-circuit manufacturers to convert integrated circuit chips with aluminum bead leads. Report covers: techniques for handling tiny chips; proper geometries for ultrasonic bonding tips; best combinations of pressure, pulse time, and ultrasonic energy for bonding; and best thickness for metal films to which beam leads are bonded.

Low-common-mode differential amplifier

Outputs of differential amplifier are excellently matched in phase and amplitude over wide range of frequencies. Common mode feedback loop offsets differences between two signal paths. Possible applications of circuit are in oscilloscopes, integrated circuit logic tester, and other self contained instruments.

Converting Time Signals From BCD to IRIG-B

Coded representation of time signals--day, hour, minute, second--is changed from binary-coded decimal (BCD) to IRIG standard time-code format B by circuit that uses nine integrated circuits. Input to code-converter circuit is parallel BCD pulses on bus output is serial pulses of IRIG-B on single line.

Heart-Rate and Breath-Rate Monitor

Circuit requiring only four integrated circuits (IC's) measures both heart rate and breath rate. Phase-locked loops lock on heart-rate and respiration-rate input signals. Each loop IC contains two phase comparators. Positive-edge-triggered circuit used in making monitors insensitive to dutycycle variations.

Fast Control Sequencer

Unit faster than conventional circuits and contains fewer integrated circuits. Fast logic controller accommodates three delays before second half cycle of clock signal strobes status latch: Outputs of pipeline register must settle; selected input status line signal must propagate through status multiplexer and arrive at status latch; and it takes 3 nanoseconds for status latch set up before strobed. During second half cycle, output-enable line produces next instruction and applies it to pipeline register.

Dielectric-Filled Paraboloidal Front Ends

Planar antennas with receiving and/or transmitting circuits integrated at focal point. Reflectors formed from shaped dielectric material with metallized parabolic surface serve as basis for wide variety of planar, integrated receiver and transmitter circuits operating at millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths. Used over wide range of frequencies and in variety of modes: as receiver or transmitter, in heterodyne or direct-detection mode, with single element, or with array.

Design of an optically controlled Ka-band GaAs MMIC phased-array antenna

Phased array antennas long were investigated to support the agile, multibeam radiating apertures with rapid reconfigurability needs of radar and communications. With the development of the Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuit (MMIC), phased array antennas having the stated characteristics are becoming realizable. However, at K-band frequencies (20 to 40 GHz) and higher, the problem of controlling the MMICs using conventional techniques either severely limits the array size or becomes insurmountable due to the close spacing of the radiating elements necessary to achieve the desired antenna performance. Investigations were made that indicate using fiber optics as a transmission line for control information for the MMICs provides a potential solution. By adding an optical interface circuit to pre-existing MMIC designs, it is possible to take advantage of the small size, lightweight, mechanical flexibility and RFI/EMI resistant characteristics of fiber optics to distribute MMIC control signals. The architecture, circuit development, testing and integration of optically controlled K-band MMIC phased array antennas are described.

Solid State Technology Branch of NASA Lewis Research Center Second Annual Digest, June 1989 - June 1990

A collection of papers and presentations authored by the branch between June 1989 and June 1990 is presented. The papers are organized into four sections. Section 1 deals with research in microwave circuits and includes full integrated circuits, the demonstration of optical/RF interfaces, and the evaluation of some hybrid circuitry. Section 2 indicates developments in coplanar waveguides and their use in breadboard circuits. Section 3 addresses high temperature superconductivity and includes: thin film deposition, transport measurement of film characteristics, RF surface resistant measurements, substrate permittivity measurements, measurements of microstrip line characteristics at cryogenic temperatures, patterning of superconducting films, and evaluation of simple passive microstrip circuitry based on YBaCuO films. Section 4 deals with carbon films, silicon carbide, GaAs/AlGaAs, HgCdTe, and other materials.

An Integrated Magnetic Circuit Model and Finite Element Model Approach to Magnetic Bearing Design

A code for designing magnetic bearings is described. The code generates curves from magnetic circuit equations relating important bearing performance parameters. Bearing parameters selected from the curves by a designer to meet the requirements of a particular application are input directly by the code into a three-dimensional finite element analysis preprocessor. This means that a three-dimensional computer model of the bearing being developed is immediately available for viewing. The finite element model solution can be used to show areas of magnetic saturation and make more accurate predictions of the bearing load capacity, current stiffness, position stiffness, and inductance than the magnetic circuit equations did at the start of the design process. In summary, the code combines one-dimensional and three-dimensional modeling methods for designing magnetic bearings.
