Initial Process Planning of a Hybrid Multi-Tasking Platform

Abstract Applications of hybrid technology are expanding from refurbishment and repair to low quantity, specialty part production, which are staple characteristics in medical implant, energy, and aerospace industry sectors, among others. This expansion has led to the development of the Mazak VC-500A/5X AM HWD, a wire fed laser cladding unit equipped with a standard 5 axis CNC. This unit is capable of building near net geometry of complex medium to large parts within a profitable timeframe, due to its comparatively high rate of deposition to that of a powder fed hybrid system. In this study, deposition and machining capabilities of the VC-500A/5X AM HWD are assessed through the production of three different test geometries by different process plans. Production of these test geometries is supported by an open loop sensor package primarily for monitoring machine health, data collection, and machine operator aid. The viability of extended deposition followed by machining is evaluated against a more cyclical strategy of reoccurring deposition and machining operations. Lastly, common defects in as-built geometries are evaluated and addressed through revisions to original process plans and toolpaths, indicating the need for continued innovation in hybrid manufacturing specific CAM/CAD software, as well as closed loop machine monitoring and quality control.

Design and Performance of the Acts Gigabit Satellite Network High Data-Rate Ground Station

The ACTS High Data-Rate Ground stations were built to support the ACTS Gigabit Satellite Network (GSN). The ACTS GSN was designed to provide fiber-compatible SONET service to remote nodes and networks through a wideband satellite system. The ACTS satellite is unique in its extremely wide bandwidth, and electronically controlled spot beam antennas. This paper discusses the requirements, design and performance of the RF section of the ACTS High Data-Rate Ground Stations and constituent hardware. The ACTS transponder systems incorporate highly nonlinear hard limiting. This introduced a major complexity in to the design and subsequent modification of the ground stations. A discussion of the peculiarities of the A CTS spacecraft transponder system and their impact is included.

Aggregate residential demand flexibility behavior: A novel assessment framework

Residential demand flexibility (DF) could save the U.S. electric grid up to 10 GW of peak demand while supporting increased amounts of renewable generation. However, less than 40% of the estimated DF peak reduction capacity is currently realized, and less than 8% of American households are enrolled. These low participation rates are combined with high rates of "overriding" a DF event and eventual opt-outs among enrolled customers. There is still not a comprehensive understanding of the drivers of DF participation and occupant interaction with DF program signals. We, therefore, present a novel survey processing framework to assess occupant DF-relevant behavior from the American Time Use Survey (ATUS). Using the framework, we summarize both the extensive and intensive behavior of more than 200,000 ATUS respondents (2003-2018 data) and provide insights on the DF-relevant behavior of residential occupants, which is generally overlooked in the literature. Here we use the framework to identify the activity priorities of residential occupants in the United States during different DF-relevant periods (critical peak, peak, and off-peak). These preferred activities capture overlooked routine behaviors that could be barriers to DF participation, if ignored, and might explain the high levels of overrides often exhibited by participants of demand response.

Sensitivity of cellular automata grain structure predictions for high solidification rates

Understanding as-solidified grain structure development during constrained (G 0) alloy solidification conditions is a necessary component of understanding the larger process-microstructure relationships during additive manufacturing (AM) processing. This study applies a cellular automata (CA) model, for static solidification velocities and thermal gradients on the order of those expected in AM melt pools, to investigate grain shape development across ranges of input parameters governing temperature field evolution, nucleation, and growth. Variation in nucleated grain shape from columnar to equiaxed as a function of thermal gradient and nucleation density is modeled with CA and verified against the established transition model of Hunt and Gaumann. Furthermore, while thermal conditions and nucleation density are shown to have the largest roles on microstructure development, the sensitivity of grain structure was very unevenly distributed across parameter space. In particular, it was found that microstructure is very sensitive to mean nucleation undercooling and the interfacial response function in process space regimes near grain structure transitions, but entirely controlled by a combination of thermal gradient, solidification velocity, and nucleation density away from such transitions. The understanding of grain shape sensitivity obtained through CA modeling, particularly at large thermal gradient and nucleation density, will be necessary for accurate microstructure prediction during the extreme processing conditions and large input parameter uncertainty common to AM.

Impact of High-Dose-Rate and Low-Dose-Rate Brachytherapy Boost on Toxicity, Functional and Cancer Outcomes in Patients Receiving External Beam Radiation Therapy for Prostate Cancer: A National Population-Based Study

External beam radiation therapy (EBRT) with brachytherapy boost reduces cancer recurrence in patients with prostate cancer compared with EBRT monotherapy. However, randomized controlled trials or large-scale observational studies have not compared brachytherapy boost types directly.
