Spacecraft Autonomous Navigation for Formation Flying Earth Orbiters Using GPS

This paper extends earlier analysis for autonomous orbit determination and control of Earth orbiting spacecraft. The earlier analysis was limited to a single spacecraft with a ground track repeat requirement. This work shows that a similar technique is applicable for two spacecraft flying in formation. Tracking and orbit determination functions are performed using the Global Positioning System (GPS).

Contact patterns in wild pigs ( Sus scrofa ) from GPS tracking reveal spatial and temporal dynamics of social behaviour

Wild pig ( Sus scrofa Linnaeus, 1758) social behaviour affects disease transmission and landscape-level population management. Recent research has incorporated analysis of social structure to better understand the risk of disease transmission in wild pigs, although the relationship between overall social structure of wild pigs remains unclear. Here, we seek to improve understanding of the spatial and temporal dynamics of wild pig social structure and contact rates to better inform management strategies. Using GPS tracking data, we measured home range overlap, and estimated contact rates of wild pigs at four study sites in the southern USA to identify pairwise social associations (i.e., contacts) based on synchronous movement. Contact rate was strongly associated with home range overlap, but exhibited substantial variation, especially at moderate levels of home range overlap. We found that female–female dyads had higher contact rates and longer duration phases of social association compared to female–male and male–male dyads. We found male–male dyads tended to experience social associations farther from their home range centers than female–female or female–male dyads. Social associations between wild pig dyads are highly dynamic in their spatial and temporal structure. Further, dyads with strong social associations still experience substantial time apart. Our findings highlight the challenges of predicting spatial and social associations in wild pig social pairs due to their dynamic social structure over space and time.

Trace Gases, Meteorological Parameters, and GPS data for TRACER-MAP

This dataset includes trace gas, meteorological, and GPS measurements made on Mobile Air Quality Laboratory 2 (MAQL2) for the TRACER-MAP sampling campaign. Trace gas measurements include nitric oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), reactive nitrogen compounds (NOy), ozone (O3), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and carbon monoxide (CO). All trace gases are in units of ppbv, excluding CO which is in ppmv. The dataset also includes the photolysis rate of NO2 (jNO2), latitude and longitude, wind speed (WS), wind direction (WD), ambient relative humidity (RH), ambient pressure (press), and ambient temperature (temp). Units for trace gases are in parts per billion (ppbv), latitude and longitude are in decimal degrees (dd), jNO2 is in per second (per sec), pressure is in millibar (mbar), relative humidity is in percent, the temperature is in degrees C, wind direction is in degrees, and wind speed is in meters per second. All data is 5 minutes averaged.

A Costas loop with tangent error signal for use in Navstar GPS avionics

This paper describes an augmented Costas loop for use in low-cost avionics for the Navstar Global Positioning System. A standard loop has been augmented with supplementing feed-back to give a tracking error voltage proportional to the tangent of the phase error, rather than to the sine. The augmented loop yields increased performance in the presence of input phase acceleration and jerk, as caused by maneuvers of the GPS user vehicle. Many Monte Carlo simulation results are given.

Shuttle GPS R/PA evaluation analysis and performance tradeoff study

Primary responsibility was understanding and analyzing the various GPS receiver functions as they relate to the shuttle environment. These receiver functions included acquisition properties of the sequential detector, acquisition and tracking properties of the various receiver phase locked loops, and the techniques of sequential receiver operation. In addition to these areas, support was provided in the areas of oscillator stability requirements, antenna management, and navigation filter requirements, including preposition aiding.

Relativistic information of the GPS-NAVSTAR position determination algorithm

The use of satellite proper time as integration variable and space time correlation handling were examined for means to reduce computational requirements. Implementation architectures were discussed with emphasis on minimization of computer configuration hardware requirements. Selected benchmark experiment results are presented to size processor requirements for achieving GPS-NAVSTAR navigation accuracies in both the user and control segments.

Design study of a low cost civil aviation GPS receiver system

A low cost Navstar receiver system for civil aviation applications was defined. User objectives and constraints were established. Alternative navigation processing design trades were evaluated. Receiver hardware was synthesized by comparing technology projections with various candidate system designs. A control display unit design was recommended as the result of field test experience with Phase I GPS sets and a review of special human factors for general aviation users. Areas requiring technology development to ensure a low cost Navstar Set in the 1985 timeframe were identified.

Simulation of a navigator algorithm for a low-cost GPS receiver

The analytical structure of an existing navigator algorithm for a low cost global positioning system receiver is described in detail to facilitate its implementation on in-house digital computers and real-time simulators. The material presented includes a simulation of GPS pseudorange measurements, based on a two-body representation of the NAVSTAR spacecraft orbits, and a four component model of the receiver bias errors. A simpler test for loss of pseudorange measurements due to spacecraft shielding is also noted.

A generalized development model for testing GPS user equipment

The generalized development model (GDM) program, which was intended to establish how well GPS user equipment can perform under a combination of jamming and dynamics, is described. The systems design and the characteristics of the GDM are discussed. The performance aspects of the GDM are listed and the application of the GDM to civil aviation is examined.
