Erbium quantum memory platform with long optical coherence via back-end-of-line deposition on foundry-fabricated photonics

Realizing scalable quantum interconnects necessitates the integration of solid-state quantum memories with foundry photonics processes. While prior photonic integration efforts have relied upon specialized, laboratory-scale fabrication techniques, this work demonstrates the monolithic integration of a quantum memory platform with low-loss foundry photonic circuits via back-end-of-line deposition. We deposited thin films of titanium dioxide (Ti⁢O 2 ) doped with erbium (Er) onto silicon nitride nanophotonic waveguides and studied Er optical coherence at subkelvin temperatures with photon echo techniques. Furthermore, we suppressed optical dephasing through ex-situ oxygen annealing and optimized measurement conditions, which yielded an optical coherence time of 64 μ⁢s (a 5-kHz homogeneous linewidth) and slow spectral diffusion of 27 kHz over 4 ms, results that are comparable to state-of-the-art Er nanophotonic devices. Combined with second-long electron spin lifetimes and demonstrated electrical control of Er emission, our findings establish Er:Ti⁢O 2 on foundry photonics as a manufacturable platform for ensemble and single-ion quantum memories.

On-chip frequency-bin quantum photonics

Abstract Frequency-bin encoding furnishes a compelling pathway for quantum information processing systems compatible with established lightwave infrastructures based on fiber-optic transmission and wavelength-division multiplexing. Yet although significant progress has been realized in proof-of-principle tabletop demonstrations, ranging from arbitrary single-qubit gates to controllable multiphoton interference, challenges in scaling frequency-bin processors to larger systems remain. In this Perspective, we highlight recent advances at the intersection of frequency-bin encoding and integrated photonics that are fundamentally transforming the outlook for scalable frequency-based quantum information. Focusing specifically on results on sources, state manipulation, and hyperentanglement, we envision a possible future in which on-chip frequency-bin circuits fulfill critical roles in quantum information processing, particularly in communications and networking.

NASA Space Laser Technology

Over the next two decades, the number of space based laser missions for mapping, spectroscopy, remote sensing and other scientific investigations will increase several fold. The demand for high wall-plug efficiency, low noise, narrow linewidth laser systems to meet different systems requirements that can reliably operate over the life of a mission will be high. The general trends will be for spatial quality very close to the diffraction limit, improved spectral performance, increased wall-plug efficiency and multi-beam processing. Improved spectral performance will include narrower spectral width (very near the transform limit), increased wavelength stability and or tuning (depending on application) and lasers reaching a wider range of wavelengths stretching into the mid-infrared and the near ultraviolet. We are actively developing high efficiency laser transmitter and high-sensitivity laser receiver systems that are suitable for spaceborne applications.

Optical Software Defined Radio Transmitter Extinction Ratio Enhancement with Differential Pulse Carving

A unique challenge in the development of a deep space optical software defined radio (SDR) transmitter is the optimization of the extinction ratio (ER). For a Mars to Earth optical link, an ER approaching 40dB may be necessary. However, a high ER can be difficult to achieve at the low PPM orders and narrow slot widths required for high data rates. The quality of the digital signal transmitted by the SDR does not meet the amplitude and timing characteristics needed by an analog optical modulator. The conflicting implementation constraints of these two fundamentally different systems, the digital SDR and analog optical modulator, can make achieving the required ER very difficult. In this paper, the causes of fidelity loss at the interface between the SDR and optical modulator are discussed. The SDR signal quality requirements are derived and explored. It is shown that increasing the SDR signal quality enough to meet these requirements is impractical to implement due to bandwidth limitations of electronic components as well as Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) clock speed constraints. A novel optical modulation architecture based on low-voltage differential signaling and dual Mach-Zehnder modulators is presented which reduces the signal quality requirements on the SDR and increases the system ER.

Surface Plasmon Tunable Filter and Spectrometer-on-a-Chip

Surface plasmon tunable filter (SPTF) is a new technology invented in Jet Propulsion Lab. When a white light is incident on a metal/air/metal structure, in certain condition, surface plasmon waves can be excited at one metal/air material interface; those photons in surface plasmon resonances wavelength range will be converted into the energy of free electrons in the metal than coupled into the other metal film, and re-radiate out the color light.

Electronically Tunable Color Filter with Surface Plasmon Waves

Last year, I had reported a novel phenomenon of voltage-induced color-selective absorption with surface plasmons (Appl. Phys. Lett. 67, 2749)...A prototype ( of a tunable notch filter) has been built using liquid crystal as the EO material.
