Results of a comprehensive atmospheric aerosol-radiation experiment in the southwestern United States. I - Size distribution, extinction optical depth and vertical profiles of aerosols suspended in the atmosphere. II - Radiation flux measurements and

Results are reported for a field test that was aimed at acquiring a sufficient set of measurements of aerosol properties required as input for radiative-transfer calculations relevant to the earth's radiation balance. These measurements include aerosol extinction and size distributions, vertical profiles of aerosols, and radiation fluxes. Physically consistent, vertically inhomogeneous models of the aerosol characteristics of a turbid atmosphere over a desert and an agricultural region are constructed by using direct and indirect sampling techniques. These results are applied for a theoretical interpretation of airborne radiation-flux measurements. The absorption term of the complex refractive index of aerosols is estimated, a regional variation in the refractive index is noted, and the magnitude of solar-radiation absorption by aerosols and atmospheric molecules is determined.

Prediction of in-depth oxidation distribution of reinforced carbon-carbon materials for Space Shuttle leading edges

A method was developed for predicting oxidation distribution through the thickness of reinforced carbon-carbon material in an earth atmospheric entry environment. A mathematical model was developed which describes oxygen diffusion and reaction rates within material pores. Pertinent rate constants were derived, and material mass loss was computed for a range of temperatures and pressures. Results indicate that both temperature and pressure have an important effect on mass loss distribution. Analytical results were quite consistent with results of ground oxidation tests.

Effect of evaporative surface cooling on thermographic assessment of burn depth

Differences in surface temperature between evaporating and nonevaporating, partial- and full-thickness burn injuries were studied in 20 male, white guinea pigs. Evaporative cooling can disguise the temperature differential of the partial-thickness injury and lead to a false full-thickness diagnosis. A full-thickness burn with blister intact may retain enough heat to result in a false partial-thickness diagnosis. By the fourth postburn day, formation of a dry eschar may allow a surface temperature measurement without the complication of differential evaporation. For earlier use of thermographic information, evaporation effects must be accounted for or eliminated.

Depositional history of core section 74001 - Depth profiles of maturity, FeO, and metal

Samples from every 0.5-cm interval of soil in core section 74001 have been studied by ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) and magnetic techniques. The values of the FMR maturity index show that the 74001 samples are very immature (the index ranges from 0.14 to 0.29 units) and have not seen appreciable, if any, surface exposure since their deposition. In fact, the small amount of fine-grained metal in the 74001 samples is probably not acquired as a result of their exposure to the micrometeoroid flux at the lunar surface. Thus, the black-glass soil of 74001 was deposited very rapidly, probably in a single episode or several closely spaced episodes of lunar fire fountaining. The average concentration of FeO and its standard deviation for all the 74001 samples are 22.5 + or - 0.3 wt.%. Since the FeO concentration is so uniform, no large variations in the major-element chemistry of 74001 are expected, with the possible exception of the volatile elements. The concentration of coarse-grained metal, which is measured magnetically, and its standard deviation are 0.15 + or - 0.01 wt.%. The coarse-grained metal probably precipitated contemporaneously with the silicate and oxide phases in the black-glass droplets.

Automated Array Assembly Task In-depth Study of Silicon Wafer Surface Texturizing

A low cost wafer surface texturizing process was studied. An investigation of low cost cleaning operations to clean residual wax and organics from the surface of silicon wafers was made. The feasibility of replacing dry nitrogen with clean dry air for drying silicon wafers was examined. The two stage texturizing process was studied for the purpose of characterizing relevant parameters in large volume applications. The effect of gettering solar cells on photovoltaic energy conversion efficiency is described.

Satellite Power Systems (SPS) concept definition study. Volume 6: In-depth element investigation

The fabrication parameters of GaAs MESFET solid-state amplifiers considering a power added conversion efficiency of at least 80% and power gains of at least 10dB were determined. Operating frequency was 2.45 GHz although 914 MHz was also considered. Basic circuit to be considered was either Class C or Class E amplification. Two modeling programs were utilized. The results of several computer calculations considering differing loads, temperatures, and efficiencies are presented. Parametric data in both tabular and plotted form are presented.

Radio occultation of Jupiter's ring - Bounds on optical depth and particle size and a comparison with infrared and optical results

A comparison of Voyager 1 data of the Jovian ring at radio, infrared and optical wavelengths suggests a population density that either falls more rapidly than the inverse square of the linear size, or is sharply bounded in maximum particle size. A fragmentation power law is used to estimate a minimum particle radius of 1-2 microns, and a specific model is developed which consists of a power law distribution of lossless or slightly absorbent Mie scatterers with a refractive index near 1.62, a power law index of -3.5, and a minimum particle size of 1.5 microns. The maximum particle radius is not critical, provided that it is greater than 4 microns, and the power law polydispersion of lossless or low absorbent Mie scatterers is consistent with previously reported observations as long as the parameter size minimum is 20 and the power index is about -3.5.

Tharsis volcanoes - Separation distances, relative ages, sizes, morphologies, and depths of burial

Network analysis indicates the separation distances of the Tharsis volcanoes to be 700 to 900 km; this is considered to be the thickness of the Tharsis thermal lithosphere or 'tectosphere' which has thickened with time. Although as a whole the Tharsis volcanoes exhibit a random distribution, preferential alignments emerge when the history of the region is divided into separate periods. The preferential alignments mimic those of fractures in the surrounding terrain. Photogeologic and morphometric data indicate that the volcanoes fall into four distinct classes: montes, tholi, paterae, and a class whose sole representative is Alba Patera. The volcanoes have been buried by lava up to about 4 km in thickness. The sizes of the volcanoes directly correlate with their separation distances from their nearest neighbors. It is concluded that the greater the lithosphere thickness, the larger will be the volcano and the greater its separation distance from its nearest neighbor.

Modeling Io volcanism: Maximum volcanic temperatures, depths of melting and magma composition

Interim results of thermal and structural modeling of volcanism on Io were presented. The final results of the modeling are summarized. The basic analysis is an evaluation of the magma trigger mechanism for initiating and maintaining eruptions. Secondary aspects include models of the mechanical mode of magma emplacement, interactions with a sulphur-rich upper crust, and more speculative implications for Io's volcanism.

Simulated flight through JAWS wind shear - In-depth analysis results

The Joint Airport Weather Studies (JAWS) field experiment was carried out in 1982 near Denver. An analysis is presented of aircraft performance in the three-dimensional wind fields. The fourth dimension, time, is not considered. The analysis seeks to prepare computer models of microburst wind shear from the JAWS data sets for input to flight simulators and for research and development of aircraft control systems and operational procedures. A description is given of the data set and the method of interpolating velocities and velocity gradients for input to the six-degrees-of-freedom equations governing the motion of the aircraft. The results of the aircraft performance analysis are then presented, and the interpretation classifies the regions of shear as severe, moderate, or weak. Paths through the severe microburst of August 5, 1982, are then recommended for training and operational applications. Selected subregions of the flow field defined in terms of planar sections through the wind field are presented for application to simulators with limited computer storage capacity, that is, for computers incapable of storing the entire array of variables needed if the complete wind field is programmed.
