Crosslinking and degradation mechanisms in model sealant candidates

Heterocyclic ring systems were investigated, triazines and 1,2,4-oxadiazoles. Only a limited effort was extended to the preparation of triazoles. Compounds, n-perfluoroheptyl-s-triazine, a perfluoroether substituted triazine, C3F7OCF(CF3)CF2OCF(CF3) 3C3N3,1,4-bus (5-perfluoro-n-heptyl)-1,2,4-oxadiazolyl -benzene, its perfluoroalkylether substituded analogue, and 3,5-bis(perfluoro-n-heptyl)-1,2,4-oxadiazole were synthesized and characterized. To eliminate the effect due to a tertiary fluorine present in branched materials, the pure n-alkyl-compounds were prepared. The main starting material, perfluoro-n-octanonitrile, was obtained from commercially available perfluoro-n-octanoic acid via a three step synthesis.

Capacity degradation due to interleaving and multiplexing

The capacity of an M-ary channel with N-ary coding is computed. It is found that the capacity of a very noisy channel is reduced by the factor (N-1)(log M)/(M-1)(log N). The results are applied to channels with noncoherent multifrequency shift keying and to concatenation of codes and interleaving.

Correlation of an optical system degradation with contamination on a critical surface

The loss of sensitivity of a radiantly cooled radiometer during space operation was investigated. A quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), mounted in the proximity of the instrument filter lens and held at its temperature, measured the contaminant at the location during a vacuum test. The temperature cycling of the lens and the QCM verified the contamination of the lens as the cause of the deterioration. Data on the instrument performance in space and in the chamber allowed estimation of the rate of contaminant accretion on the lens in space service. That rate was used to estimate the contaminant partial pressure. The nature of material was inferred by comparison of the partial pressures and the saturated vapor pressures of materials at the temperature of the contaminated surface. These data, in conjunction with data on fields of view of the lens, are used to identify the sources of contamination.

Studies on the toxic elements and organic degradation products in aquatic bodies and sediments around Kennedy Space Center (KSC) Haulover Canal and Mosquito Lagoon

The work during the first year ending September, 1975, is reported. Indian River, Haulover Canal, Mosquito Lagoon, and other aquatic areas of discharge around Kennedy Space Center (KSC) were studied. The presentation and interpretation of data on water and sediment samples collected from Haulover Canal and Mosquito Lagoon are included. The field and laboratory data are presented and tentative conclusions were drawn in the various aspects of the study. An attempt was made to correlate the physical, chemical, and biological parameters.

Study of thermal stability and degradation of fire resistant candidate polymers for aircraft interiors

The thermochemistry of bismaleimide resins and phenolphthalein polycarbonate was studied. Both materials are fire-resistant polymers and may be suitable for aircraft interiors. The chemical composition of the polymers has been determined by nuclear magnetic resonance and infrared spectroscopy and by elemental analysis. Thermal properties of these polymers have been characterized by thermogravimetric analyses. Qualitative evaluation of the volatile products formed in pyrolysis under oxidative and non-oxidative conditions has been made using infrared spectrometry. The residues after pyrolysis were analyzed by elemental analysis. The thermal stability of composite panel and thermoplastic materials for aircraft interiors was studied by thermogravimetric analyses.

Land use change detection with LANDSAT-2 data for monitoring and predicting regional water quality degradation

The author has identified the following significant results. Comparison between LANDSAT 1 and 2 imagery of Arkansas provided evidence of significant land use changes during the 1972-75 time period. Analysis of Arkansas historical water quality information has shown conclusively that whereas point source pollution generally can be detected by use of water quality data collected by state and federal agencies, sampling methodologies for nonpoint source contamination attributable to surface runoff are totally inadequate. The expensive undertaking of monitoring all nonpoint sources for numerous watersheds can be lessened by implementing LANDSAT change detection analyses.

Cross Linking and Degradation Mechanisms in Model Sealant Candidates

Model compounds were investigated as to which type of heterocyclic ring is the most advantageous for curing sealants based on perfluoroalkylether chains. The relative thermal, thermal oxidative, hydrolytic, and fuel stability of potential crosslinks were determined. Specifically substituted materials were synthesized and evaluation of their stabilities in air, inert atmosphere, water, and Jet-A fuel at 235 and 325 C was made. Three heterocyclic ring systems were considered, namely, triazine, 1,2,4- and 1,3,4-oxadiazoles.

Development of the data base for a degradation model of a selenide RTG

The paper is concerned with the evaluation of the materials used in a selenide radioisotope thermoelectric generator (RTG). These materials are composed of n-type gadolinium selenide and n-type copper selenide. A three-fold evaluation approach is being used: (1) the study of the rate of change of the thermal conductivity of the material, (2) the investigation of the long-term stability of the material's Seebeck voltage and electrical resistivity under current and temperature gradient conditions, and (3) determination of the physical behavior and compatibility of the material with surrounding insulation at elevated temperatures. Programmatically, the third category of characteristic evaluation is being emphasized.

Photon degradation effects in terrestrial solar cells

Reduction in cell output was observed in N(+)/P cells upon exposure to illumination or upon the application of a sufficiently high forward bias. Conversely, an enhancement in output was observed when P(+)/N cells were illuminated. Investigations performed on N(+)/P cells indicated that a recombination center located at E sub c - 0.37 eV in the forbidden band was responsible for the loss in output. The center was electrically inactive in its ground state but was activated either by raising the minority carrier quasi-Fermi level sufficiently close to the latent center energy level in the band gap, or by direct excitation of electrons from the valence band to the latent center level. The center was identified as a complex of a lattice defect and a silver atom or cluster of atoms.
