Methylmercury Retention Evaluation to Support Tank 50 and Saltstone Waste Acceptance Criteria: Parts 2 and 3

The objective of this work was to provide a technical basis for the organic mercury waste acceptance criterion (WAC) for Tank 50 salt solution. The current mercury WAC for Tank 50 solution is 325 mg/L as Hg regardless of the form of mercury, which is about three times higher than any total Hg concentrations measured to date in Tank 50 solution. To date, the highest total Hg and MeHg + concentrations in the Tank 50 solution were 105 and 62 mg/L, respectively.

AI to Predict Glass Compositions Satisfying Property and Cooling Rate Criteria

This project aimed to develop a predictive, artificial intelligence/machine learning-based model to identify glass compositions satisfying specified property requirements. Such a model would provide a systematic approach for narrowing down the nearly infinite range of possible compositions for glasses and minimize unnecessary experimental trial and error. A large empirical data set for training and testing the algorithm was obtained from the SciGlass database. It contains glass compositions and corresponding property data from a wide range of literature sources. However, the currently available form of this data, recently released under an open database license, is not conducive to easy querying and use. The data structure was deciphered and a customized parsing code developed to make this data more usable for the current and future work. Neural network models were developed and trained on viscosity data from the database and demonstrated potential for improving prediction accuracy over a traditional regression model.

LLNL FY2022 Aging and Lifetimes Exit Criteria: Milestone 8118, GC#3

Adhesives and adhesive-bond joints play a critical role in many applications across the national security enterprise. They are ubiquitous and their aging performance can impact the physical and chemical behavior of complex systems. Previously, we have explored the chemical aging behavior of polyurethane adhesives (Halthane 73-18, Halthane 88-3, and Wilethane 44) exposed to varying levels of radiation and identified the primary chemical degradation products. In this work, we expand upon our analysis to understand how the mechanical properties of adhesives-bonded joints behave after radiation exposure.

LLNL FY22 Aging and Lifetimes Exit Criteria: Milestone 8119, GC#01

Polysiloxane foams utilized for stockpile applications experience changes over time induced by exposure to thermal, radiative, and mechanical stresses. The interplay of these stresses can lead to chemical and/or physical changes in the polymer, such as compression set and material degradation over time. Understanding the mechanisms of material aging and identifying material degradation prior to failure are critical in maintaining the integrity of the nuclear stockpile. Our prior work using solid-state NMR spectroscopy has shown that we can observe signatures of thermal, radiative, and mechanical aging of silicone elastomers using differences in NMR parameters such as relaxation (T1 and T2). However, most of our measurements have been on bulk samples and have only provided an average aging behavior of each sample. Here, we have used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to provide relaxation-weighted images that are a metric of structural heterogeneity (crosslink density) in polymers across multiple length scales. In addition, the larger sample size that can be accommodated in animal MRI scanners has the potential to make the technique adaptable to detecting heterogeneities in whole parts.

LLNL FY22 Aging and Lifetimes Exit Criteria (Milestone 8118, GC#5)

This report introduces a novel characterization tool that can rapidly collect in-situ time-dependent oxide thickness and hydride growth data together with spatial data using while-light interferometry. White-light interferometry is a non-destructive and non-contact optical surface profiling technique for materials characterization that offers excellent lateral and vertical resolution. A depleted uranium sample was used to assess the ability of white-light interferometry to provide quantitative corrosion reaction rates at metal surfaces for by hydriding and oxidation and compare this technique to existing characterization tools for capturing early-stage hydride and oxide growth kinetics.

LANL ASC FY23 L2 Milestone Description and Completion Criteria [Slides]

In early 2021, the ASC Program decided that Ristra should provide a production code (Moya) for LANL’s mission in the Low Energy-Density Physics application space. At the same time, Ristra should design an environment for rapid development of new codes that can answer new questions on new hardware. We started FY22 by expanding upon our R&D efforts of high-order DG methods for hydrodynamics; Technical & staffing challenges caused us to abandon this for a traditional FV SGH approach, but leveraging modern techniques. Significant changes in FleCSI (v1.4→2.x) have us writing code anew, in a co-design effort with the FleCSI and FleCSI specialization projects.

LLNL FY23 Aging and Lifetimes Exit Criteria: Milestone 8650, GC #4

Silicone rubbers are important materials within the complex and are used in various applications due to wide operating temperatures, favorable aging characteristics, and chemical inertness. However, silicone rubbers are susceptible to degradation in the presence of acid or base. The goal of the project is to design outgassing vessels to probe material degradation byproducts from additively manufactured (AM) silicones compressed against Arrhenius base under dry (sub 100 ppm moisture) environments. The overarching goal of this task is to develop a mechanistic understanding of degradation from experimental data that will be used to inform predictive lifetime and aging models. An outgassing chamber for multi-material compressive aging was designed. The chamber consists of a stainless-steel enclosure, which is hermetically sealed once AM silicone samples are compressed against Arrhenius base pellets in compression rigs (Fig. 1). Outgassing chambers, compression rigs, and accessories were procured, arrived onsite, and received surface treatments. Outgassing of degradation byproducts will be monitored over 12 weeks at 35 °C and 70 °C.

Demonstration of new fracture criteria based on micro-structure and compare to empirical model and measurements

The US nuclear industry is currently exploring extending the peak rod average burnup limits above the current regulatory limit of 62 GWd/tU. A potential concern for fuel exceeding the burnup limit is the fragmentation during a temperature transient such as a loss-of-coolant accident (LOCA). In the event of cladding failure, the fragmented fuel could relocate and disperse within the reactor. The potential impact of fuel fragmentation, relocation and dispersal (FFRD) on licensing assumptions for burnup extension has focused a great amount of efforts and research on this topic.

Event Selection in the MicroBooNE Deep Learning Based Low Energy Excess Analysis Using Two-Body Scattering Criteria

The uniquely detailed neutrino event information from liquid argon time projection chambers allows reconstruction of a set of kinematic quantities that over-constrain the expectations for charged current quasielastic scattering (CCQE). MicroBooNE makes use of the CCQE consistency requirements in a deep-learning-based search for the MiniBooNE low energy excess analysis. This requirement rejects backgrounds as well as events with poorly reconstructed neutrino energy due to final state interactions of the outgoing proton. The results presented here demonstrate the quality of the selection of $\nu_e$ and $\nu_µ$ events. We show excellent agreement between the data and the simulation across many data sets. This positions us to be ready to unblind the MicroBooNE low energy excess analysis in the very near future.
