Applications of Liapunov stability theory to control systems
Advanced high-strength steels go through complex heat treatment processes with the goal of retaining austenite to enhance the mechanical properties. Martensite start temperature predictions are generally based on bulk composition when designing heat treatments, so compositional heterogeneities are not considered. Here, the effects of compositional heterogeneities on retained austenite fractions in a quenching and partitioning steel are investigated. In conclusion, the results show that Mn banding from solidification can be used to change retained austenite fractions.
While previous work has identified the conditions for preparing ultrastable single-component organic glasses by physical vapor deposition (PVD), little is known about the stability of codeposited mixtures. Here, we prepared binary PVD glasses of organic semiconductors, TPD (N,N'-Bis(3-methylphenyl)-N,N'-diphenylbenzidine) and m-MTDATA (4,4',4"-Tris[phenyl(m-tolyl)amino]triphenylamine), with a 50:50 mass concentration over a wide range of substrate temperatures (T sub ). The enthalpy and kinetic stability are evaluated with differential scanning calorimetry and spectroscopic ellipsometry. Binary organic semiconductor glasses with exceptional thermodynamic and kinetic stability comparable to the most stable single-component organic glasses are obtained when deposited at T sub = 0.78–0.90T g (where T g is the conventional glass transition temperature). When deposited at 0.94T g , the enthalpy of the m-MTDATA/TPD glass equals that expected for the equilibrium liquid at that temperature. Thus, the surface equilibration mechanism previously advanced for single-component PVD glasses is also applicable for these codeposited glasses. Furthermore, these results provide an avenue for designing high-performance organic electronic devices.

Recent studies have revealed the prevalence and biological significance of guanidine metabolism in nature. However, the metabolic pathways used by microbes to degrade guanidine or mitigate its toxicity have not been widely studied. Here, via comparative proteomics and subsequent experimental validation, we demonstrate that Sll1077, previously annotated as an agmatinase enzyme in the model cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803, is more likely a guanidinase as it can break down guanidine rather than agmatine into urea and ammonium. The model cyanobacterium Synechococcus elongatus PCC 7942 strain engineered to express the bacterial ethylene-forming enzyme (EFE) exhibits unstable ethylene production due to toxicity and genomic instability induced by accumulation of the EFE-byproduct guanidine. Co-expression of EFE and Sll1077 significantly enhances genomic stability and enables the resulting strain to achieve sustained high-level ethylene production. These findings expand our knowledge of natural guanidine degradation pathways and demonstrate their biotechnological application to support ethylene bioproduction.
A fast gold nanoparticle synthesis without stabilizer in plasma–microdroplet interaction is identified.
As part of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Milestone-Based Fusion Energy Development Program, Tokamak Energy has completed the pre-concept design of the ST–E1 fusion power plant. ST–E1 is envisaged to operate in two phases: a pilot plant phase, targeting sustained net power production of 300 - 500 MWe for a duration >1 hr, followed by a commercial power plant phase targeting steady-state operations and a normalised overnight capital cost of ⩽12 000 $\$$/kWe. The design process adopted was highly iterative, integrating all major plant systems and progressing in a phased fidelity approach. At the pre-conceptual stage, the emphasis has been on exploring the design space, identifying the main system-level trade-offs, and making the key decisions that define the overall plant concept, rather than optimising a single operating point. This paper, part of a focused collection detailing the ST–E1 pre-concept design, addresses the development of a series of reference flat-top plasma operating points for the pilot plant phase. A modelling workflow was established to develop and assess candidate plasma design points and explore key dependencies. The workflow includes integrated core plasma modelling, magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) stability assessment, equilibrium generation, scrape-off-layer and exhaust modelling, heating & current drive design and optimisation, and turbulent transport modelling. Using this framework, the impact of several key parameters on the flat-top operating space was investigated, including the density limit, core radiation fraction and divertor power loading, level of external heating and curent drive power and assumed pedestal characteristics. The MHD stability, controllability and micro-stability characteristics of these plasmas were also analysed. These investigations informed the definition of a set of fully non-inductive, flat-top reference operating points that satisfy the high-level ST–E1 mission, including a low and high density case, a case that is stable to resistive wall modes and a case with reduced divertor power loading.

Laser frequency stabilization methods are based on a frequency discriminant which generates an unambiguous deviation signal used for automatic stabilization. Closed-loop control stabilizes cavity length at a null point. Some systems have a stabilized ring laser using a piezoelectric dither and others use a Doppler gain tube.
