Supernova remnants containing neutron stars

X-ray observations of Crab Nebula-like supernova remnants are summarized. Five remnants are found to contain internal neutron stars - four isolated and one in a binary system. Another five remnants have central unresolved X-ray sources which are probably neutron stars. Thus approximately 10 remnants are now known to have their origin in gravitational collapse. Another 22 remnants show some Crab-like properties, but the existence of a central compact object or pulsar is doubtful or unconfirmed. The four fast isolated pulsars in SNR are also compared with five X-ray detected radio pulsars.

Measurement and analysis of distribution coefficients in Fe-Ni alloys containing S and/or P. II - K(Ir), K(Ge), and K(Cu)

Crystals of Fe-Ni-S-P alloys containing Ir, Ge, and Cu in small amounts were grown by plane front solidification. The electron microprobe was used to measure the compositions of these alloys. The Ir, Ge, and Cu distribution coefficients were determined by an analytical procedure from the composition data. The distribution coefficients of Ir, Ge, and Cu vary from 1.20 to 11.0, 0.75 to 2.1, and 0.06 to 0.84, respectively. K(Ir) and K(Ge) increase and K(Cu) decreases with the S content of the liquid. K(Cu) increases and K(Ir) and K(Ge) decrease with the P content of the liquid. Mathematical expressions have been formulated to relate the Ir, Ge, and Cu distribution coefficients to the S and P contents of the liquid. These distribution coefficients are important to the study of the solidification behavior of iron meteorites.

A clamped rectangular plate containing a crack

The general problem of a rectangular plate clamped along two parallel sides and containing a crack parallel to the clamps is considered. The problem is formulated in terms of a system of singular integral equations and the asymptotic behavior of the stress state near the corners is investigated. Numerical examples are considered for a clamped plate without a crack and with a centrally located crack, and the stress intensity factors and the stresses along the clamps are calculated.

Stability of finite-difference models containing two boundaries or interfaces

The stability of finite difference models of hyperbolic initial boundary value problems is connected with the propagation and reflection of parasitic waves. Wave propagation ideas are applied to models containing two boundaries or interfaces, where repeated reflection of trapped wave packets is a potential new source of instability. Various known instability phenomena are accounted for in a unified way. Results show: (1) dissipativity does not ensure stability when three or more formulas are concatenated at a boundary or internal interface; (2) algebraic GKS instabilities can be converted by a second boundary to exponential instabilities only when an infinite numerical reflection coefficient is present; and (3) GKS-stability and P-stability can be established in certain problems by showing that all numerical reflection coefficients have modulus less than 1.

Ultrasonic testing of plates containing edge cracks

The stress wave factor (SWF) signal is utilized for the nondestructive evaluation of plates containing perpendicular edge cracks. The effects of the existence lateral location and depth of the crack on the magnitude spectra of individual reflections in the SWF signal are studied. If the reflections in the SWF signal are not overlapped the short time Fourier analysis is applied. If the reflections are overlapped the short time homomorphic analysis (cepstrum analysis) is applied. Several reflections which have average resonant frequencies approximately at 0.9, 1.3, and 1.7 MHz are analyzed. It is observed that the magnitude ratios evaluated at average resonant frequencies decrease more with increasing d/h if the crack is located between the transducers, where h is plate thickness and d is crack depth. Moreover, for the plates, crack geometries, reflections, and frequencies considered, the average decibel drop depends mainly on the dimensionless parameter d/h and it is approximately -1 dB per 0.07 d/h. Changes in the average resonant frequencies of the magnitude spectra are also observed due to changes in the location of the crack.

Microwave radiances from horizontally finite precipitating clouds containing ice and liquid hydrometeors

Microwave radiances that would be measured from satellite borne radiometers were computed as a function of rainfall rates from horizontally finite precipitating clouds containing ice and liquid hydrometeors capped by a layer of nonprecipitating ice that covers the remainder of the footprint. Ice at the top of the precipitating clouds depresses the brightness temperatures which depend on rainfall rates because the ice hydrometeor concentrations are assumed to be related to the rainfall rates at the cloud base. It is also found that the brightness temperatures of footprints partially covered by precipitation cells are a nonlinear function of the rainfall rate averaged over the footprint. Thus the average brightness temperatures depend on the peak rainfall rates and the size of the precipitating cloud.

A comprehensive estimate of the static aerodynamic forces and moments of the 8 x 8 x 20 ft. cargo container

A comprehensive static aerodynamic simulation model of the 8 by 8 by 20 ft MILVAN cargo container is determined by combining the wind tunnel data from a 1972 NASA Ames Research Center study taken over the restricted domain (0 is less than or equal to phi is less than or equal to 90 degrees; 0 is less than or equal to alpha is less than or equal to 45 degrees) with extrapolation relations derived from the geometric symmetry of rectangular boxes. It is found that the aerodynamics of any attitude can be defined from the aerodynamics at an equivalent attitude in the restricted domain (0 is less than phi is less than 45 degrees; 0 is less than alpha is less than 90 degrees). However, a similar comprehensive equivalence with the domain spanned by the data is not available; in particular, about two-thirds of the domain with the absolute value of alpha is greater than 45 degrees is unrelated to the data. Nevertheless, as estimate can be defined for this region consistent with the measured or theoretical values along its boundaries and the theoretical equivalence of points within the region. These descrepancies are assumed to be due to measurement errors. Data from independent wind tunnel studies are reviewed; these are less comprehensive than the NASA Ames Research Center but show good to fair agreement with both the theory and the estimate given here.

Thermo-oxidatively stable condensation polyimides containing 1,1,1-triaryl-2,2,2-trifluoroethane dianhydride and diamine monomers

Nine new condensation polyimides containing the trifluorophenylethylidene linkage were synthesized by the amic-acid route. Several other polyimides, including some with the hexafluoroisopropylidene linkage, were also prepared as controls. Amic-acid solutions were characterized by determining their inherent viscosities prior to thermal conversion into polyimide films. Glass transition temperatures (T sug g), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and isothermal weight loss data were obtained for the films. The films were pulverized into molding powders which, in turn, were thermally processed under pressure into neat resin discs. The discs were also characterized by T sub gs and 316 C and 371 C isothermal weight losses. The film study identified two new polyimides with T sub gs greater that 371 C and two new polyimides with low rates of weight loss. The resin discs exhibited the same overall trends in T sub g and weight loss as the respective films, however the weight loss per unit surface area was always greater, presumably due to voids or to mechanical degradation induced during preparation of the molding powders.

Fluoride salts and container materials for thermal energy storage applications in the temperature range 973 to 1400 K

Multicomponent fluoride salt mixtures were characterized for use as latent heat of fusion heat storage materials in advanced solar dynamic space power systems with operating temperatures in the range of 973 to 1400 K. The melting points and eutectic composition for many systems with published phase diagrams were verified, and several new eutectic compositions were identified. Additionally, the heats of fusion of several binary and ternary eutectics and congruently melting intermediate compounds were measured by differential scanning calorimetry. The extent of corrosion of various metals by fluoride melts was estimated from thermodynamic considerations, and equilibrium conditions inside a containment vessel were calculated as functions of the initial moisture content of the salt and free volume above the molten salt. Preliminary experimental data on the corrosion of commercial, high-temperature alloys in LiF-19.5CaF2 and NaF-27CaF2-36MgF2 melts are presented and compared to the thermodynamic predictions.

Annoyance response to simulated advanced turboprop aircraft interior noise containing tonal beats

A study is done to investigate the effects on subjective annoyance of simulated advanced turboprop (ATP) interior noise environments containing tonal beats. The simulated environments consisted of low-frequency tones superimposed on a turbulent-boundary-layer noise spectrum. The variables used in the study included propeller tone frequency (100 to 250 Hz), propeller tone levels (84 to 105 dB), and tonal beat frequency (0 to 1.0 Hz). Results indicated that propeller tones within the simulated ATP environment resulted in increased annoyance response that was fully predictable in terms of the increase in overall sound pressure level due to the tones. Implications for ATP aircraft include the following: (1) the interior noise environment with propeller tones is more annoying than an environment without tones if the tone is present at a level sufficient to increase the overall sound pressure level; (2) the increased annoyance due to the fundamental propeller tone frequency without harmonics is predictable from the overall sound pressure level; and (3) no additional noise penalty due to the perception of single discrete-frequency tones and/or beats was observed.

Design and chemical synthesis of iodine-containing molecules for application to solar-pumped I* lasers

Research is directed toward the design and synthesis of new media for solar-pumped I* lasers. Since the most effective existing lasants are perfluoroalkyl iodides, a strategy was proposed for the development of improved materials of this type with absorption maxima at 300 nm. Absorption spectra were synthesized and measured for prototypical species containing iodine bound to boron, iron, and cobalt.

Degradation mechanisms of sulfur and nitrogen containing compounds during thermal stability testing of model fuels

The degradation behavior of n-dodecane (singly or in combination with S- and N-containing dopants) was studied using a modified Jet Fuel Thermal Oxidation Tester facility between 200 and 400 C. The products were analyzed by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. The soluble products consisted mainly of n-alkanes and 1-alkenes, aldehydes, tetrahydrofuran derivatives, dodecanol and dodecanone isomers, C21-C24 alkane isomers, and dodecylhydroperoxide (ROOH) decomposition products. The major products were always the same, with and without dopants, but their distributions varied considerably. The 3,4-dimercaptotoluene and dibutylsulfide dopants added individually to n-dodecane interferred with the hydrocarbon oxidation at the alkylperoxy radical and the alkylhydroperoxide link, respectively, while the 2,5-dimethylpyrrole dopant inhibited ROOH formation. Pyridine, pyrrole, and dibenzothiophene added individually showed few significant effects.

Fuel containment and damage tolerance in large composite primary aircraft structures. Phase 2: Testing

Technical issues associated with fuel containment and damage tolerance of composite wing structures for transport aircraft were investigated. Material evaluation tests were conducted on two toughened resin composites: Celion/HX1504 and Celion/5245. These consisted of impact, tension, compression, edge delamination, and double cantilever beam tests. Another test series was conducted on graphite/epoxy box beams simulating a wing cover to spar cap joint configuration of a pressurized fuel tank. These tests evaluated the effectiveness of sealing methods with various fastener types and spacings under fatigue loading and with pressurized fuel. Another test series evaluated the ability of the selected coatings, film, and materials to prevent fuel leakage through 32-ply AS4/2220-1 laminates at various impact energy levels. To verify the structural integrity of the technology demonstration article structural details, tests were conducted on blade stiffened panels and sections. Compression tests were performed on undamaged and impacted stiffened AS4/2220-1 panels and smaller element tests to evaluate stiffener pull-off, side load and failsafe properties. Compression tests were also performed on panels subjected to Zone 2 lightning strikes. All of these data were integrated into a demonstration article representing a moderately loaded area of a transport wing. This test combined lightning strike, pressurized fuel, impact, impact repair, fatigue and residual strength.
