Clip-On Extensometer

Flexural clamp eliminates problems of operator variability. Extensometer opens and closes like clothespin and placed easily on specimen. Dimensions of block specimen are 1 by 1 by 2.2 inches (2.54 by 2.54 by 5.59 centimeters). By constructing central flexure units of various widths, one adapts extensometer to handle specimens ranging from thin strips to those many inches thick. New design reduces measurement errors caused by variability among test operators.

Fundamental Studies of Low Velocity Impact Resistance of Graphite Fiber Reinforced Polymer Matrix Composites

A study was conducted to relate the impact resistance of graphite fiber reinforced composites with matrix properties through gaining an understanding of the basic mechanics involved in the deformation and fracture process, and the effect of the polymer matrix structure on these mechanisms. It was found that the resin matrix structure influences the composite impact resistance in at least two ways. The integration of flexibilizers into the polymer chain structure tends to reduce the T sub g and the mechanical properties of the polymer. The reduction in the mechanical properties of the matrix does not enhance the composite impact resistance because it allows matrix controlled failure to initiate impact damage. It was found that when the instrumented dropweight impact tester is used as a means for assessing resin toughness, the resin toughness is enhanced by the ability of the clamped specimen to deflect enough to produce sufficient membrane action to support a significant amount of the load. The results of this study indicate that crossplied composite impact resistance is very much dependent on the matrix mechanical properties.

Experimental study using nearfield acoustic holography of sound transmission through fuselage sidewall structures

The reduction of cabin noise in lightweight, propeller-driven aircraft is an especially difficult problem in noise control. Nearfield Acoustic Holography (NAH) was used to determine the mode of vibration and acoustic intensity for panels which differed in: construction (number of stiffening ribs, size of stifening ribs, construction material, and panel surface curvature); boundary support condition (free edge condition or clamped edge condition); and mode of excitation (structural-borne forces or airborne forces). The different samples of aircraft panels are described and the measurement of the natural response frequencies was discussed under various boundary support and excitation conditions. The results of the NAH measurements are presented.

Analysis of Delamination Growth from Matrix Cracks in Laminates Subjected to Bending Loads

A major source of delamination damage in laminated composite materials is from low-velocity impact. In thin composite laminates under point loads, matrix cracks develop first in the plies, and delaminations then grow from these cracks at the ply interfaces. The purpose of this study was to quantify the combined effects of bending and transverse shear loads on delamination initiation from matrix cracks. Graphite-epoxy laminates with 90 deg. plies on the outside were used to provide a two-dimensional simulation of the damage due to low-velocity impact. Three plate bending problems were considered: a 4-point bending, 3-point bending, and an end-clamped center-loaded plate. Under bending, a matrix crack will form on the tension side of the laminate, through the outer 90 deg. plies and parallel to the fibers. Delaminations will then grow in the interface between the cracked 90 deg. ply and the next adjacent ply. Laminate plate theory was used to derive simple equations relating the total strain energy release rate, G, associated with the delamination growth from a 90 deg. ply crack to the applied bending load and laminate stiffness properties. Three different lay-ups were tested and results compared. Test results verified that the delamination always formed at the interface between the cracked 90 deg. ply and the next adjacent ply. Calculated values for total G sub c from the analysis showed good agreement for all configurations. The analysis was able to predict the delamination onset load for the cases considered. The result indicated that the opening mode component (Mode I) for delamination growth from a matrix crack may be much larger than the component due to interlaminar shear (Mode II).

Single-Event Upset (SEU) model verification and threshold determination using heavy ions in a bipolar static RAM

Single-Event Upset (SEU) response of a bipolar low-power Schottky-diode-clamped TTL static RAM has been observed using Br ions in the 100-240 MeV energy range and O ions in the 20-100 MeV range. These data complete the experimental verification of circuit-simulation SEU modeling for this device. The threshold for onset of SEU has been observed by the variation of energy, ion species and angle of incidence. The results obtained from the computer circuit-simulation modeling and experimental model verification demonstrate a viable methodology for modeling SEU in bipolar integrated circuits.

Vibration and buckling of rotating, pretwisted, preconed beams including Coriolis effects

The effects of pretwist, precone, setting angle and Coriolis forces on the vibration and buckling behavior of rotating, torsionally rigid, cantilevered beams were studied. The beam is considered to be clamped on the axis of rotation in one case, and off the axis of rotation in the other. Two methods are employed for the solution of the vibration problem: (1) one based upon a finite-difference approach using second order central differences for solution of the equations of motion, and (2) based upon the minimum of the total potential energy functional with a Ritz type of solution procedure making use of complex forms of shape functions for the dependent variables. The individual and collective effects of pretwist, precone, setting angle, thickness ratio and Coriolis forces on the natural frequencies and the buckling boundaries are presented. It is shown that the inclusion of Coriolis effects is necessary for blades of moderate to large thickness ratios while these effects are not so important for small thickness ratio blades. The possibility of buckling due to centrifugal softening terms for large values of precone and rotation is shown.

Evaluation of residual strength of composite laminates damaged by low velocity impacts

This work presents the study of Low Velocity Transverse Impact damage of graphite-epoxy T300/5208 composite material. An energy dissipation model was developed to predict the residual strength from fracture mechanics concepts. The specimens, 100 mm diameter clamped plates, were impact damaged by a cantilever-type instrumented 1-inch diameter steel ball. This study was limited to impact velocity 6 m/sec. Rectangular strips, 50 mm x 125 mm, were cut from the impact-damaged specimens so that the impact damage zone was in the center of the strips. These strips were tested to obtain their residual strength. Predictions were compared with the test results.

Deformation and failure of transversely loaded composite plates

Quasi-isotropic graphite/epoxy clamped circular plates were loaded under control point loading. Deflections and strains at various locations were monitored up to failure. Various damage mechanisms, such as intralaminar matrix cracking, delaminations and fiber breaks, are correlated with the strain records. The damage at various stages of deformation was characterized by means of X-radiography. Results are compared with an approximate isotropic plate theory.

Effects of nonlinear damping on random response of beams to acoustic loading

Effects of both nonlinear damping and large-deflection are included in the theoretical analysis in an attempt to explain the experimental phenomena of aircraft panels excited at high sound pressure levels; that is the broadening of the strain response peak and the increase of the modal frequency. Two nonlinear damping models are considered in the analysis using a single-mode approach. Mean square maximum deflection, mean square maximum strain, and spectral density function of maximum strain for simply supported and clamped beams are obtained. It is demonstrated that nonlinear damping contributes significantly to the broadening of the response peak and to the mean square maximum deflection and strain.

Response of symmetric rectangular composite laminates with nonlinear damping subjected to acoustic loading

Effects of both nonlinear damping and large-deflection are included in the analysis in an attempt to explain the experimental phenomena of aircraft panels excited at high sound pressure levels; that is the broadening and flattening out of the strain response peaks and the increasing of the response frequency. A nonlinear damping model is considered in the analysis using a single-mode approach. Root-mean-square (RMS) maximum deflection, RMS strains, spectral density functions of strain, and equivalent linear frequency are obtained for clamped and simply supported rectangular symmetric laminated composite plates. It is demonstrated that nonlinear damping is the one which causes the broadening of the response peaks, and it has great influence on RMS panel deflection, RMS strains, and frequency.

Deformation and damage of composite plates under impact loading

Transient deformation and damage were studied in impacted graphite/epoxy plates. The plates were 8-ply and 16-ply quasi-isotropic laminates clamped around a 12.7 cm diameter circumference. They were instrumented with surface and embedded strain gages and loaded by a 202 gr mass dropped from a height of 1.8 m. The load history and imparted energy were obtained by means of an accelerometer attached to the impactor. Transient strains at various locations through the thickness and at various distances from the loading point were obtained. The characteristic features of the strain records are associated with specific failure modes in the laminate. The deformation history was also correlated with the induced damage as detected by X-radiography and ultrasonics. Impact damage is more extensive in the thicker laminate. Damage takes the form of delaminated strips parallel to the fiber direction in each ply and increasing in length from top to bottom.
