An experimental 20/30 GHz communications satellite conceptual design employing multiple-beam paraboloid reflector antennas

An experimental 20/30 GHz communications satellite conceptual design is described which employs multiple-beam paraboloid reflector antennas coupled to a TDMA transponder. It is shown that the satellite employs solid state GaAs FET power amplifiers and low noise amplifiers while signal processing and switching takes place on-board the spacecraft. The proposed areas to be served by this satellite would be the continental U.S. plus Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands, as well as southern Canada and Mexico City. Finally, attention is given to the earth stations which are designed to be low cost.

Solar hot water system installed at Day's Lodge, Atlanta, Georgia

The solar energy hot water system installed in the Days Inns of America, Inc., Atlanta, Georgia is described. This system provides for 81 percent of the total hot water demand. There are two separate systems, each serving one building of the lodge (total of 65 suites). The entire system contains only potable city water. The 1024 square feet of Grumman Sunstream Model 332 liquid flat plate collectors and the outside piping drain whenever the collector plates approach freezing or when power is interrupted. Solar heated water from the two above ground cement lined steel tanks (1000 gallon tank) is drawn into the electric Domestic Hot Water (DHW) tanks as hot water is drawn. Electric resistance units in the DHW tanks top off the solar heated water, if needed, to reach thermostat setting.

Offset fed utilization of four quadrants of an axially symmetrical antenna structure

Theoretical calculations conducted for the use of the hoop column structure were in a quad antenna configuration. The coverage of the US 48 states by a C band Comsat system, which operates in the 3.7 - 4.2 GHz downlink and 5.925 - 6.425 GHz uplink frequency band is considered. This system provides most of its coverage toward major cities (10 or 18 spot beams) and the rest of its coverage on a contiguous basis for the remaining of the country. An alpha = .5 and .3 cell size (approximate component bandwidth) is assumed. Among the practically infinite possible beam topologies one plan for the area coverage and three plans for the spot beam coverage are analyzed.

Summary of 1978 Southeastern Virginia Urban Plume study: Aircraft results for carbon monoxide, methane, nonmethane hydrocarbons, and ozone

The characteristics of the Southeastern Virginia urban plume were defined with emphasis on the photon-oxidant species. The measurement area was a rectangle, approximately 150 km by 100 km centered around Cape Charles, Virginia. Included in this area are the cities of Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Newport News, and Hampton. The area is bounded on the north by Wallops Island, Virginia, and on the south by the Hampton Roads area of Tidewater Virginia. The major axis of the rectangle is oriented in the southwest-northeast direction. The data set includes aircraft measurements for carbon monoxide, methane, nonmethane hydrocarbons, and ozone. The experiment shows that CO can be successfully measured as a tracer gas and used as an index for determining localized and urban plumes. The 1978 data base provided sufficient data to assess an automated chromatograph with flame ionization detection used for measuring methane and nonmethane hydrocarbons in flight.

30/20 GHz communications satellite multibeam antenna

A 20 GHz downlink satellite antenna design is described. The aperture simultaneously radiates 18 fixed, 0.3 deg width pencil beams directed at 18 cities distributed over CONUS for Trunking Service. All beams use the same trunk frequency allocation for 18 reuses of the band. The same aperture also radiates six additional 0.3 deg spot beams for Customer Premises Service (CPS) for TDMA beam hopping operation to small terminals anywhere in CONUS. Each CPS beam scans one sector of CONUS and all six beams are frequency reused in a CPS band. Offset dual reflector optics are used with a feed array and multiport beam forming network (BFN). For so many frequency reuses, sidelobes per beam must be 30 to 40 dB down over CONUS. Novel dual reflector optics were devised with shaped surfaces providing low aberrations for all beam positions over CONUS (+ or - 12 BW by + or - 5 BW). Scan loss under 1 dB is calculated with nearly constant sidelobes. For each beam position, a 7-element cluster of feeds is activated in the feed array with coefficients adjusted by the BFN to maintain low sidelobes and thus high beam isolation for frequency reuse.

Origin of rapidly solidified metal-troilite grains in chondrites and iron meteorites

Quantitative evidence is adduced by cooling rate calculations for the impact melting, on the surface of a parent body, of troilite and metallic Fe, Ni inclusions found on 12 ordinary chondrites rather than their formation at depth from an internally derived melt. In the case of the Shaw and Rose City breccias of unmelted and melted material, their melted metal need not have cooled through 1000 C within a few meters of the surface. Shock-melted, fine-grained, irregular intergrowths of metal and troilite form in situ in many irons and some chondrites by rapid solidification at cooling rates greater than 100,000 C/sec, so that their kamacite and taenite compositions may result from annealing of metallic glass or very fine quench products at about 250 C.

Effects of miso- and mesoscale obstructions on PAM winds obtained during project NIMROD

Data from 27 PAM (Portable Automated Mesonet) stations, operational as a phase of project NIMROD (Northern Illinois Meteorological Research on Downburst), are presented. It was found that PAM-measured winds are influenced by the mesoscale obstruction of the Chicago metropolitan area, as well as by the misoscale obstruction of identified trees and buildings. The mesoscale obstruction was estimated within the range of near zero to 50%, increasing toward the city limits, while the misoscale obstruction was estimated as being as large as 58% near obstructing trees which were empirically calculated to cause a wind speed deficit 50-80 times their height. Despite a statistical analysis based on one-million PAM winds, wind speed and stability transmission factors could not be accurately calculated; thus, in order to calculate the airflow free from obstacle, PAM-measured winds must be corrected.

Radar reflectivities and satellite imagery of severe storms 20 May 1977

Storms on 20 May 1977 generated a vast cirrus deck. Disturbed areas at storm top had equivalent black-body temperatures (T sub BB) much lower than the tropopause temperature, indicative of overshooting tops. The area of T sub BB not greater than -71 C represents the area of convective activity penetrating 2 km above the tropopause. This area was relatively large after cloud tops and radar reflectivities reached their maximum heights. It became much smaller during tornadoes when reflectivities were decreasing. T sub BB was at a minimum at the time of mesocyclone formation. The Del City storm had two periods of growth, as indicated both by reflectivities and the T sub BB areas. The mesocyclone was first detected during the second less intense period of growth; the tornado occurred during decreasing reflectivities. The maintenance of large areas of relatively low T sub BB after tornado dissipation is ascribed to continued convection on the flanks of the storm and to residual updrafts in a thick anvil cloud.

Measurements of cloud nuclei in the effluents from launches of liquid- and solid-fueled rockets

Airborne measurements of two types of cloud nuclei, cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) and ice nuclei (IN), were conducted in the stabilized ground clouds which resulted from the launches of a liquid-fueled ATLAS/Centaur rocket and a solid-fueled TITAN III rocket. Results show that the concentrations of CCN in both types of clouds were greater than ambient values for the 2 hours duration of the measurements. The initial production of CCN active at 0.5% supersaturation in the ATLAS and TITAN clouds was found to be equivalent to a 20 and 700 sec emission, respectively, by the city of Denver, Colorado. After the initial production, the clouds continued to generate CCN at a rate of about 1/cu cm sec. However, concentrations of IN in the ATLAS cloud were greater than ambient values for only a short period after launch, and it appears that the nuclei resulted from entrained launch pad and ground debris. The concentrations of IN in the TITAN cloud were found to be at or below ambient levels until about 2 hours after launch when they increased substantially above ambient values.
