Development of a potentiometric EDTA method for determination of molybdenum. Use of the analysis for molybdenite concentrates

Based on considerations of principles and experimental data, the interference of sulfate ions in poteniometric titration of EDTA with FeCl3 was confirmed. The method of back complexometric titration of molybdenum of Nonova and Gasheva was improved by replacing hydrazine sulfate with hydrazine hydrochloride for reduction of Mo(VI) to Mo(V). The method can be used for one to tenths of mg of molybdenum with 0.04 mg standard deviation. The specific method of determination of molybdenum in molybdenite concentrates is presented.

NASA Lidar system support and MOPA technology demonstration

A series of lidar design and technology demonstration tasks in support of a CO2 lidar program is discussed. The first of these tasks is discussed in Section VI of this report under the heading of NASA Optical Lidar Design and it consists of detailed recommendations for the layout of a CO2 Doppler lidar incorporating then existing NASA optical components and mounts. The second phase of this work consisted of the design, development, and delivery to NASA of a novel acousto-optic laser frequency stabilization system for use with the existing NASA ring laser transmitter. The second major task in this program encompasses the design and experimental demonstration of a master oscillator-power amplifier (MOPA) laser transmitter utilizing a commercially available laser as the amplifier. The MOPA design including the low chirp master oscillator is discussed in detail. Experimental results are given for one, two and three pass amplification. The report includes operating procedures for the MOPA system.

Emission by OD in comets

A calculation has been made of the complete fluorescent equilibrium of OD in sunlight including ultraviolet (A-X) transitions, vibrational and rotational transitions (A-A and X-X), and Lambda-doubling transitions in the X state. The dependence on heliocentric radial velocity is strong. No lines of OD are visible in any cometary spectra taken with IUE, but the limits vary, considerably from one comet to another. In the most favorable case, comet Austin 1982 VI, the limit is OD/OH less than 0.004. Optimum conditions for detecting OD in comet Halley are also discussed.

Spacelab data analysis using the space plasma computer analysis network (SCAN) system

The Space-plasma Computer Analysis Network (SCAN) currently connects a large number of U.S. Spacelab investigators into a common computer network. Used primarily by plasma physics researchers at present, SCAN provides access to Spacelab investigators in other areas of space science, to Spacelab and non-Spacelab correlative data bases, and to large Class VI computational facilities for modeling. SCAN links computers together at remote institutions used by space researchers, utilizing commercially available software for computer-to-computer communications. Started by the NASA's Office of Space Science in mid 1980, SCAN presently contains ten system nodes located at major universities and space research laboratories, with fourteen new nodes projected for the near future. The Stanford University computer gateways allow SCAN users to connect onto the ARPANET and TELENET overseas networks.

Recent Shuttle EVA operations and experience

This paper describes the hardware used and the experience gained during the Space Shuttle extravehicular activities (EVAs) or 'spacewalks' of 1984. Seven EVAs on four missions were conducted with objectives including hardware verification, satellite repair, hydrazine transfer, and satellite retrieval. The hardware used on these flights fall into two categories - general EVA hardware (e.g. the Manned Maneuvering Unit) and mission-unique hardware (e.g. apogee kick motor capture device, used to retrieve the WESTAR VI and PALAPA B-2 satellites). The successful completion of the mission objectives resulted in an increased knowledge of EVA operations and a broader base of Space Shuttle capabilities which are applicable to future operations.

Electron density diagnostics in the 10-100 A interval for a solar flare

Electron density measurements from spectral-line diagnostics are reported for a solar flare on July 13, 1982, 1627 UT. The spectrogram, covering the 10-95 A interval, contained usable lines of helium-like ions C V, N VI, O VII, and Ne IX which are formed over the temperature interval 0.7-3.5 x 10 to the 6th K. In addition, spectral-line ratios of Si IX, Fe XIV, and Ca XV were compared with new theoretical estimates of their electron density sensitivity to obtain additional electron density diagnostics. An electron density of 3 x 10 to the 10th/cu cm was obtained. The comparison of these results from helium-like and other ions gives confidence in the utility of these tools for solar coronal analysis and will lead to a fuller understanding of the phenomena observed in this flare.

Phase transitions and convection in icy satellites

The effects of solid-solid phase changes on subsolidus convection in the large icy moons of the outer solar system are considered. Phase transitions affect convection via processes that distort the phase change boundary and/or influence buoyancy through thermal expansion. Linear stability analyses are carried out for ice layers with a phase change at the midplane. Two exothermic phase transitions (ice I - ice II, ice VI - ice VIII) and two endothermic transitions (ice I - ice III, ice II - ice V) are considered. For the exothermic cases, the phase change can either impede or enhance whole-layer convection. For the endothermic cases, the phse change always inhibits whole-layer convective overturn and tends to enforce two-layer convection. These results play some constraints on possible models of icy satellite evolution and structure.

The ammonia-water phase diagram and its implications for icy satellites

A Holzapfel-type diamond anvil cell is used to determine the NH3 - H2O phase diagram in the region from 0 to 33 mole percent NH3, 240 to 370 K, and 0 to 5 GPa. The following phases were identified: liquid; water ices Ih, III, V, VI, VII, and VIII; ammonia monohydrate, NH3.H2O; and ammonia dihydrate NH3.2H2O. Ammonia dihydrate becomes prominent at moderate pressures (less than 1 GPa), with planetologically significant implications, including the possibility of layering in Titan's magma ocean.

Stellar observations with the Voyager EUV objective grating spectrograph

During the periods of interplanetary cruise the Voyager ultraviolet spectrometers are used to provide unique and otherwise unobtainable observations in the extreme ultraviolet (EUV, 500 to 1200) and the far ultraviolet (FUV, 912 to 1220 A). These observations include the spectra of hot stellar sources as well as emission from the interplanetary medium. Recent results of note include: (1)Extensive spectrophotometric coverage of a superoutburst of the dwarf nova VW Hydri, which showed a clear 1/2 day delay in the outburst at 1000 A relative to that observed in the optical and a curious dip in the FUV light curve near maximum light. The Voyager observations were part of a comprehensive and highly successful campaign involving EXOSAT, IUE and ground based observations of this dwarf nova; (2)A comprehensive study of Be star spectra and variability. These results show the critical importance of FUV observations in the study of the effects of stellar rotation in hot stars; (3)The detection of a strong O VI absorption feature in the spectrum of the PG 1159-like object H1504+65. This detection along with the optical identification of weak O IV lines was a key to the interpretation of this object; which is of extremely high (>150,000K) temperature and appears to be a unique example of a stellar atmosphere devoid of H and He; (4)An analysis of an extremely long duration spectrum of the EUV and FUV sky background, which establishes important new upper limits on both continuum and line emission. This result also provide the first detection of interplanetary Lyman gamma.

A Lambda 1400 spectrophotometric census of the Orion belt region

Low dispersion IUE spectrophotometry were used to generate a pair of photometric indices which measure the strength of the broad continuum absorption feature at 1400 A, likely an autoionizing transition of Si II. Calibration of the indices as identifiers of silicon overabundance is based on measurements of 25 IUE spectral standards and a sample of O8-A0 IV-V stars, 18 of them silicon stars. The correlations of delta alpha 1400 with delta alpha 5200 and delta (VI-G) support the association of the lambda 5200 feature with silicon. Using this technique, a magnitude limited survey of 28 B-stars in sub-groups b1, b2 and b3 of the Orion OB1 association was conducted. Two previously unrecognized candidate (perhaps weakly overabundant) silicon stars, HD 37187 and BD - 0 deg 984 are identified.

Carbon monoxide in cometary ice

Carbon monoxide has been positively identified by means of ultraviolet fluorescence in the Fourth Positive System in two comets, West (1976 VI) and Bradfield (1979 X). In both cases, the spatial distribution of the emission is consistent with the CO being a 'parent' molecule, present in the cometary ice, rather than a dissociation product of a polyatomic species such as CO2 or HCOH. However, the abundance of CO relative to that of H2O is more than an order of magnitude smaller for comet Bradfield than for comet West. Further data on CO are expected with the use of more sensitive ultraviolet instruments such as the ASTRO spectrographs which will observe P/Halley in March 1986.

H 1504 + 65 - An extraordinarily hot compact star devoid of hydrogen and helium

The optical identification of the bright soft X-ray source H 1504 + 65, originally discovered by the HEAO I A-2 low energy detectors, is reported. The optical counterpart exhibits a steep, virtually featureless continuum from optical wavelengths through the ultraviolet. The spectrum is remarkably featureless except for a broad O VI adsorption feature at 3494.7 A and C IV absorption at 3934 A and emission at 4658 A. The soft X-ray data, which are not consistent with any published models for degenerate stars having predominantly H or He compositions, suggest that H 1504 + 65 is a metal-rich, near-degenerate object of very high temperature. Qualitative considerations indicate that it is definitely hotter than PG 1159 - 035 and similar objects. A temperature of roughly 160,000 K is suggested.

Photoionization in the halo of the Galaxy

The ionizing radiation field in the halo is calculated and found to be dominated in the 13.6-45 eV range by light from O-B stars that escapes the disk, by planetary nebulae at 45-54 eV, by quasars and the Galactic soft X-ray background at 54-2000 eV, and by the extragalactic X-ray background at higher energies. Photoionization models are calculated with this radiation field incident on halo clouds of constant density for a variety of densities, for normal and depleted abundances, and with variations of the incident spectrum. For species at least triply ionized, such as Si IV, C IV, N V, and O VI, the line ratios are determined by intervening gas with the greatest volume, which is not necessarily the greatest mass component. Column densities from doubly ionized species like Si III should be greater than from triply ionized species. The role of photoionized gas in cosmic ray-supported halos and Galactic fountains is discussed. Observational tests of photoionization models are suggested.

Two-dimensional nonsteady viscous flow simulation on the Navier-Stokes computer miniNode

The needs of large-scale scientific computation are outpacing the growth in performance of mainframe supercomputers. In particular, problems in fluid mechanics involving complex flow simulations require far more speed and capacity than that provided by current and proposed Class VI supercomputers. To address this concern, the Navier-Stokes Computer (NSC) was developed. The NSC is a parallel-processing machine, comprised of individual Nodes, each comparable in performance to current supercomputers. The global architecture is that of a hypercube, and a 128-Node NSC has been designed. New architectural features, such as a reconfigurable many-function ALU pipeline and a multifunction memory-ALU switch, have provided the capability to efficiently implement a wide range of algorithms. Efficient algorithms typically involve numerically intensive tasks, which often include conditional operations. These operations may be efficiently implemented on the NSC without, in general, sacrificing vector-processing speed. To illustrate the architecture, programming, and several of the capabilities of the NSC, the simulation of two-dimensional, nonsteady viscous flows on a prototype Node, called the miniNode, is presented.

The ultraviolet spectra of intermediate-redshift quasars. II

This paper completes the analysis of an IUE survey of intermediate-redshift QSOs for which the results on Ly-alpha and continuum properties were given previously. The weaker lines were measured and are discussed in the context of an extended sample including Seyfert galaxies and high-redshift QSOs. The EW(C IV) anticorrelates with the luminosity of the continuum at 1450 A, showing the well-known Baldwin effect. The slopes of the two relations differ slightly, which can be explained by a decrease in the ionization parameter with increasing luminosity. Weak lines of Ly-beta + O VI, N V, and semiforbidden Si IV + O IV were measured in improved spectra for two of the sample objects, 1100 + 772 and 2201 + 315. The Ly-alpha line in both objects is highly symmetrical, with N V contribution of 5 percent or less. The line shapes were fitted with a two-component profile; 1100 + 772 has a distinct narrow component which contributes 20-25 percent of the Ly-alpha flux.

Multiwavelength monitoring of the dwarf nova VW Hydri. IV - Voyager observations

Results from Voyager far-ultraviolet (500-1200 A) observations of the dwarf nova VW Hyi are presented as part of a coordinated, multiwavelength program. Data from one normal outburst and one superoutburst are discussed in detail. Far-ultraviolet (1050 A) light curves are produced showing a significant delay (0.5 day) in the rise to maximum at 1050 A with respect to optical wavelength, followed by a simultaneous decline. The superoutburst data show a distinct double-peaked light curve with the first rise and decline closely resembling that of a normal outburst. These data suggest that the rise to supermaximum in the far-ultraviolet is also delayed with respect to optical wavelengths. The spectral distribution of VW Hyi shows the steeply falling spectrum shortward of 1200 A, characteristic of dwarf novae in outburst and absorption features at 985 (N III, C III and Ly gamma) and 1030 (Ly beta and O VI). No flux shortward of 912 A was detected in VW Hyi.

The Navier-Stokes computer

The Navier-Stokes computer (NSC) has been developed for solving problems in fluid mechanics involving complex flow simulations that require more speed and capacity than provided by current and proposed Class VI supercomputers. The machine is a parallel processing supercomputer with several new architectural elements which can be programmed to address a wide range of problems meeting the following criteria: (1) the problem is numerically intensive, and (2) the code makes use of long vectors. A simulation of two-dimensional nonsteady viscous flows is presented to illustrate the architecture, programming, and some of the capabilities of the NSC.
