Distributed Ground Sensor Fusion Based Object Tracking for Autonomous Advanced Air Mobility Operations

Autonomous operations are a crucial aspect in the context of Advanced Air Mobility and other emerging aviation markets. In order to enable this autonomy, an accurate and detailed understanding of the positions of the various vehicles in the air is necessary. Full localization independent of on-board sensors makes the system suitable for noncooperative vehicles. This paper focuses on the object tracking part that relies on distributed ground-based sensor fusion, considering specific properties and limitations of different sensor types. Results show satisfactory performance in nominal scenarios with full coverage. Dropouts of individual sensors affect the accuracy of the tracking results, which agrees with expectations for partial coverage, when full localization is not achievable anymore. Finally, a study is performed to identify which parameters have the largest impact on the fit error.

Target Tracking with Distributed Sensing and Optimal Data Migration

The paper presents an Extended Kalman Filter based framework for airborne target tracking using adaptive information fusion from multi-modal multi-rate distributed sensors network. First, the tracking algorithm execution location is determined using an optimal data migration strategy, which also computes the associated delays for each sensor data to arrive at the computing location. Next, the fast (zero-delay) sensors information is dynamically fused in the filter correction procedure at the arrival instance of each valid sensor reading. Finally, the target estimation is updated based on the valid slow (delayed) data, which are grouped according to the delay-time steps before application of the Larsen's method. This approach is applied to the synthetic sensor data generated by means of the ground based radar and camera models for the simulated target flight in Reflection simulation environment.

ArcjetCV: Automating Recession Tracking

Arc jet Computer Vision (arcjetCV) is a software application built to automate time-resolved recession tracking of edges in test videos, specifically for tracking material recession and the shock-material standoff. This provides a new capability to resolve and validate new physics associated with non-linear processes and an essential step to reduce testing, modeling, and validation uncertainties for heatshield material performance. ArcticCV uses several types of machine learning (convolutional neural net: CNN, decision tree: DT, k-means unsupervised clustering: KM) to automate the video processing pipeline. These include inferring the start/stop of time segments of interest (1D CNN), measuring the time-dependent 2D recession of the material samples (2D CNN, DT), measuring the time-dependent shock standoff distance (2D CNN, DT), and post-processing cleaning of the recession data (KM). The software also provides a graphical user interface for ease of use. The results of using this tool on arc jet videos show non-linear time-dependent effects can be important for certain materials and characterizing certain failure modes.

Optimal Sensor Mobility Design for Target Tracking with Distributed Sensing, Communication and Computing Infrastructure

The paper presents an airborne target tracking approach with data fusion from distributed stationary and mobile sensor network transmitted through a wireless/wired communication network and using a distributed computing infrastructure. To obtain high quality measurements, sensor flight platforms' positions and orientations are optimized with respect to the available target's position and velocity estimates, and a formation control strategy is applied to derive desired trajectories for the flight platforms. As sensors move, the communication network topology switching is determined using the worst-case approach to handle uncertainties in the target's and sensors' positions, which alters communication delays for sensors' data transmission to computing centers. An optimal data migration algorithm is periodically applied to determine these communication delays for each sensor and the optimal location with minimum end-to-end latency for the target tracking algorithm execution, which is based on adaptive information fusion from multi-modal mobile and stationary sensors inside an Extended Kalman Filter framework. The approach is validated in a desktop simulation environment using synthetic sensor data generated for a simulated target's flight.

Kalman Filtering and RTS Smoothing for Arc-Jet Sample Edge Tracking

Accurate and temporally consistent measurements of test-article recession are required to characterize material response during arc-jet ablation experiments. However, image-based boundary measurements are often affected by segmentation noise, brightness variations, and frame-to-frame variability. This work extends arcjetCV [1] with filtering methods for tracking the evolving boundaries of hemispherical and ISO-Q test articles. Two boundary-tracking approaches based on Kalman filtering [2] were implemented. The first applies a point-wise Kalman filter followed by a Rauch–Tung–Striebel smoother [3] to individual boundary-point locations. The second applies the same filtering and smoothing framework to a reduced set of geometry-dependent shape parameters. The point-wise method reduces local frame-to-frame fluctuations while preserving spatial details along the detected boundary. The shape-parameter method provides a compact and geometrically constrained estimate of the sample contour. Figure 1 illustrates the two approaches for a hemispherical test article. Both methods improve temporal consistency and support more robust estimation of surface recession from arc-jet imagery. The two filtering approaches provide complementary representations of boundary evolution and improve the reliability of image-based recession measurements during arc-jet experiments.
