Polynomial interpolation methods for viscous flow calculations

Higher-order collocation procedures which result in block-tridiagonal matrix systems are derived from (1) Taylor series expansions and from (2) polynomial interpolation, and the relationships between the two formulations, called respectively Hermite and spline collocation, are investigated. A Hermite block-tridiagonal system for a nonuniform mesh is derived, and the Hermite approach is extended in order to develop a variable-mesh sixth-order block-tridiagonal procedure. It is shown that all results obtained by Hermite development can be recovered by appropriate spline polynomial interpolation. The additional boundary conditions required for these higher-order procedures are also given. Comparative solutions using second-order accurate finite difference and spline and Hermite formulations are presented for the boundary layer on a flat plate, boundary layers with uniform and variable mass transfer, and the viscous incompressible Navier-Stokes equations describing flow in a driven cavity.

Timesharing without synchronization

The capacity region of a multiple-access channel has recently been identified as the convex hull (barred K) of a certain set (K) of points in the first quadrant of the (R1,R2) plane. For a pair of rates in K, a more or less standard random-coding argument can be used to show the existence of a good pair of codes. But for points in barred K-K, it is apparently necessary for the two senders to use some form of time sharing to achieve the desired rates. However, in order to share time, at least one of the senders must have knowledge of the other's phase; and in many practical situations this knowledge does not exist. This paper investigates the problems which arise in coding for multiple-access channels when the senders cannot synchronize with each other.

A simulation model of time-dependent plasma-spacecraft interactions

A plasma simulation code is presented that models the time-dependent plasma properties in the vicinity of a spherical, charged spacecraft. After showing agreement with analytic, steady-state theories and ATS-6 satellite data, the following three problems are treated: (1) transient pulses from photoemission at various emission temperatures and ambient plasma conditions, (2) spacecharge limited emission, and (3) simulated plasma oscillations in the long wavelength limit.

Filtering of non-linear instabilities

For Courant numbers larger than one and cell Reynolds numbers larger than two, oscillations and in some cases instabilities are typically found with implicit numerical solutions of the fluid dynamics equations. This behavior has sometimes been associated with the loss of diagonal dominance of the coefficient matrix. It is shown that these problems can be related to the choice of the spatial differences, with the resulting instability related to aliasing or nonlinear interaction. Appropriate filtering can reduce the intensity of these oscillations and possibly eliminate the instability. These filtering procedures are equivalent to a weighted average of conservation and nonconservation differencing. The entire spectrum of filtered equations retains a three point character as well as second order spatial accuracy. Burgers equation was considered as a model.

Separation of lymphocytes by electrophoresis under terrestrial conditions and at zero gravity, phase 3

Electrophoretic mobilities (EPM) of peripheral lymphocytes were studied from normal subjects, chronic hemodialysis patients and kidney transplant recipients. A technique to separate B lymphocytes and null cells from non-T lymphocyte preparation was developed. The experiments were designed to determine which subpopulation of the non-T lymphocytes is primarily affected and shows a decreased EPM in chronic hemodialysis patients and kidney transplant recipients.

Separation of lymphocytes by electrophoresis under terrestrial conditions and at zero gravity

Electrophoretic mobility (EPM) of human peripheral lymphocytes were examined with the following objectives: To determine differences in EPM of lymphocytes under immuno-stimulated and immuno-suppressed states. To define the conditions necessary for the separation of lymphocyte sub-populations in normal and pathological conditions; To investigate immunological active, charged chemical groups on lymphocyte surfaces; and to investigate pathophysiological mechanisms of immune responsiveness, as reflected by alterations in EPM. To evaluate the potential of lymphocyte electrophoresis as: (1) a means of monitoring the immune status of kidney transplant recipients, (2) in predicting the outcome of kidney transplants, and (3) as a method for separation of lymphocyte sub-populations, the EPM was studied for unfractionated human peripheral lymphocytes and of populations enriched with T and "B" cells from normal adults, hemodialysis patients and kidney transplant recipients.

Hexagon solar power panel

A solar energy panel support is described upon which silicon cells are arrayed. The cells are wafer thin and of two geometrical types, both of the same area and electrical rating, namely hexagon cells and hourglass cells. The hourglass cells are composites of half hexagons. A near perfect nesting relationship of the cells achieves a high density packing whereby optimum energy production per panel area is achieved.

FPLA mechanization of arithmetic elements to produce A + B or to pass A only

A 4-bit and a 3-bit adder are described which can be implemented under special hardware restrictions. The chip to be used is field-programmable logic array (FPLA) with 12 input lines, 50 AND gates inside, and output through only 6 OR gates. The context in which it is being used requires an enable function which can suppress one of the two numbers to be added. The 3-bit enabled adder is compatible with lookahead-carry mechanizations using the 74S182.

Differential laser absorption monitoring of the atmosphere

In the airborne detection system of atmospheric constituents and pollutants described, double-ended differential absorption measurement is accomplished by rapidly current tuning the wavelength of a PbSSe diode laser across a single line of the species under consideration. As the laser wavelength sweeps periodically across the absorption line, the laser beam is amplitude modulated and is then synchronously detected. With this technique, a minimum detectable differential transmission of 0.02 percent is obtained for a 1-sec integration time.

Navier-Stokes calculations with a coupled strongly implicit method. Part 2: Spline solutions

A coupled strongly implicit method is combined with a deferred-corrector spline solver for the vorticity-stream function form of the Navier-Stokes equation. Solutions for cavity, channel and cylinder flows are obtained with the fourth-order spline 4 procedure. The strongly coupled spline corrector method converges as rapidly as the finite difference calculations and also allows for arbitrary large time increments for the Reynolds numbers considered. In some cases fourth-order smoothing or filtering is required in order to suppress high frequency oscillations.

ATS-5 and ATS-6 potentials during eclipse

The ATS 5 and ATS 6 data for spacecraft charging during eclipse conditions is analyzed. The ATS 5 and ATS 6 charged to voltages greater than 100 volts for about 55 percent of the eclipse periods examined. The mean spacecraft potential during eclipse was 2 keV for ATS 5, and the highest potential measured was 10 kilovolts. For ATS 6, the mean potential during eclipse was 4 keV, the highest potential measured 20 keV. The average measured spacecraft potentials for both ATS 5 and 6 depend approximately linearly upon Kp. This relationship is due mainly to the dependence of electron current density on Kp near midnight. Spacecraft potentials at geosynchronous orbit may, to a rough approximation, thus be inferred from ground-based measurements of Kp, the planetary 3-hour index.

Charging analysis of the SCATHA satellite

A detailed model of the geometrical, material, and electrical properties of the SCATHA satellite for use with the NASA charging analyzer program is described. Charging calculations in an intense magnetospheric substorm environment demonstrated that: (1) long booms can significantly perturb the potentials near the spacecraft, and (2) discharging by sunlight or by active control can cause serious time-dependent differential charging problems.
