Transformational Molecular Layer Deposition Tailor-Made Size-Sieving Sorbents for Post-Combustion CO 2 Capture

This report summarizes the carbon capture research and development conducted by The State University of New York at Buffalo (UB), University of South Carolina (USC), GTI Energy (GTI), and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) for U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) project DE-FE0031730 titled “Transformational Molecular Layer Deposition Tailor-made Size-Sieving Sorbents for Post-Combustion CO 2 capture.” The objective of this project was to develop a transformational molecular layer deposition (MLD) tailor-made size-sieving sorbent integrated with a pressure swing adsorption (PSA) cycle schedule that can be installed in new or retrofitted into existing pulverized coal (PC) power plants for CO 2 capture with a cost of electricity at least 30% lower than a supercritical PC power with CO 2 capture, or approximately $\$$30 per tonne of CO 2 captured, and with it being ready for demonstration by 2030.

Solar Photovoltaics Resilient Fasteners Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) Tool

Solar photovoltaics (PV) module fasteners are one of the most common structural failure points on PV systems, particularly in high winds and coastal areas with ocean spray. Some fastener types have been shown to survive these conditions at higher rates than others. The fastener type, material, quantity, and placement all impact performance. Fasteners that fail less often typically have a higher upfront cost, but this investment can pay off in savings from less frequent torque audits (which reduces O&M costs), reduced system damage, and decreased system downtime. We developed an Excel-based tool to evaluate different module fasteners for a PV system - either a new or retrofit project - and compare differences in upfront and outyear costs to determine the expected life cycle costs and simple payback periods of different fastener options. The tool is site-specific, with inputs including system attributes (such as system size, location, price of power) and fastener attributes (such as design, washer type, nut type, use of locking hardware, materials, installation time, and torque audit requirements). A baseline fastener scenario can be compared to up to four proposed fastener scenarios. In addition to presenting expected life cycle cost implications of the different fastener options, the tool produces results showing the reductions in outyear costs needed to offset any initial cost premiums for more reliable fasteners across four categories: preventative O&M, avoided damage, reduced downtime, and reduced insurance premiums. These numbers can serve as decision aids for users when considering fastener options on new or existing projects. This poster will present the tool, methodology, and scenarios using example sites to highlight the tool capabilities and how it can inform different fastener decisions on different projects. Future work includes incorporating lifetime expected damage costs by embedding damage function curves that the authors are developing from field data.

Carbondale Community Geothermal Coalition – Replicable Models for Decarbonizing Mixed-Use Rural Communities

The Carbondale Community Geothermal Coalition (CCGC) set out to prove that a fifth-generation geothermal district heating & cooling (5G GDHC) network can be technically feasible, cost-effective, and socially equitable for a small, mixed-use rural community. During Budget Period 1 (Planning & Design) the team: ● Completed a 449 ft thermal-response test confirming excellent ground conductivity (k = 1.69 Btu ft -1 hr -1 °F -1 ) and a benign 56.3 °F undisturbed temperature. Page 1 Final Technical Report for Award Number: DE-EE0010663 ● Built a fully calibrated digital twin (URBANopt → Modelica) for 240 k ft 2 of existing + future buildings. ● Designed a 75-borehole ambient-temperature loop (ATL) augmented by 75 solar-thermal panels, supplying 44 % of district heating and 100 % cooling in Stage-1. ● Produced retrofit bid-ready drawings for the Third Street Center and Second Street Townhomes. ● Reached > 200 community stakeholders and exceeded equity targets (46 % Hispanic/Latinx participation). ● Drafted a multi-tiered workforce plan aligned with Colorado Mountain College (Hispanic Serving Institution) and IGSHPA certifications.

Household Energy Use in Pennsylvania's Delaware Valley: An Energy-Focused Housing Stock Analysis

This report covers the housing stock analysis of the Energy to Communities Delaware Valley project. The analysis covers the housing stock of Bucks, Chester, Delaware, and Montgomery counties that border Philadelphia County in southeast Pennsylvania. It focuses primarily on single-family houses including their existing characteristics and energy consumption and the potential impact of various retrofit measure packages applied to them. This analysis was a collaborative effort among the project team, including national lab researchers and local organizations. It derives primarily from results of modeling tools from the national labs, especially NLR's ResStock, supplemented by key information from the study area.

Industrial Conduit Hydropower Opportunities in the United States: Scoping Assessment

Industrial conduit hydropower involves generating electricity from flowing water in existing industrial water supply, process flow, or wastewater discharges. The broader range of conduit hydropower involves powering existing water infrastructure in municipal, industrial, or agricultural systems. Whereas municipal and agricultural water systems have been retrofitted somewhat broadly in the United States, there are very few examples of industrial conduit hydropower. As stated in Kao et al. (2022), “conduit hydropower opportunities associated with industrial conduits are the least understood […] industrial developments are likely to be particularly efficient and cost-effective since they are typically eligible for on-site net-metering.” Therefore, additional insight into industrial opportunities is needed.
